Bonterra is located in a renovated 100 year old church in the historic Southend District of Charlotte. Sommelier & Owner John Duncan has created a stunning array of 200 wines by-the-glass and an additional 300 selections from the cellar which comprises one of the largest wine lists in Charlotte. "IF YOU GO EARLY, before the crowd, it is a very quiet and can be romantic experience (even though a little bright). If you go after 9, LOUD, but the food is still GREAT and the wine list has just enough variation in it to keep you interested."

"Went for my wife's birthday and was impressed with the service and wine list. We started with the pate and a couple of cheeses that I thought were very good. We had the fried lobster and bison ribeye for entrees and while I was not that impressed with the lobster, the bison was a nice addition to the menu that you do not see often. I will go back soon and try a few other items before I make a final opinion."

"Our dining experience at Bonterra was fabulous, can't say enough about it!! We had a party of 9 and were seated downstairs in the wine cellar. It was amazing, the food was above expectation, the service phenomenal and the setting was spectacular. We had a wonderful experience at Bonterra. Our server was helpful, friendly and attentive. He helped us pick the wine, appetizers and was knowledgeable about all the meals. This is a great restaurant and highly recommend it."

"I have been to Bonterra several times over the past few years and have ordered a vegetarian entree. The restaurant typically has fantastic sides with it main meals, so I didn't specify specifically what I wanted, but have never been disappointed in the past with what the chef put together. This past visit was a tremendous let down. My vegetarian entree was a plate that had a small amount of some sort of grain with about four sautéed carrot sticks and five green beans on top. It was a small portion and completely thoughtless. In general, the restaurant should include some vegetarian options on the menu give the rising number of people that do appreciate meatless options."

"My husband and I have been to Bon Terra twice now. We loved it both times! We went this time to celebrate his birthday. We both thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. It is a place for special occasions as our bill was over $100 (we both had drinks, appetizers, and dessert though!). The ambiance is nice, quiet and romantic. We would definitely go back again to celebrate a special occasion."

"We went to Bonterra on a Saturday evening as a group of six celebrating two birthdays. We had a sixteen year old and two 80 + diners. The restaurant is bright and the tables are nicely spaced, so it was easy for our older guests to negotiate. The main room itself is well lit naturally by large church windows.
The waiters are Bonterra are experienced and many have been there for years. The professionalism and knowledge is very high. The menu has a variety of seafood and meat items, I think it had a choice for everyone. It also features some regionally raised or produced items like a Bison Ribeye. The food was great and served hot, also the timing of courses was perfect. Not to miss, chocolate souffle."

"We have been here 5 times before but it has been a while. There is a new smaller menu. The history of the place is no longer on it a d the server could not explain it. The food was good for the other 5 people but I lost out. My steak was clearly well done versus medium, had it been personal rather than business it would have gone back. The sides were boring and starchy. Not much flexibility per server. Service was slow. Overall experience was disappointing."

"Bonterra is a beautiful venue to have dinner. The waitstaff is well informed and helpful without being overbearing. The wine is very good. Regretfully, I have had two steaks at Bonterra (Filet Mignon and Beef Tenderloin) that were both sub-par. Not sure how you can mess up a Filet Mignon unless you start with inferior grade beef. The scallops are excellent and my wife likes the lamb even though the portions are very small. I don't mind paying premium prices but it would be great to have high quality

"Usually I really enjoy the food at Bonterra, but our dinner on Wednesday was just ok. Our server was nice and competent, but was not going to break any land speed records. We started with spring salads that were fresh, but did not have the goat cheese that they were supposed to have. My salmon was cooked nicely, but accompanying lima beans were bland. My husband had scallops that looked beautiful, but were not flavorful and were gritty to boot. The chocolate souffle was again ok, nothing special and coffee was lukewarm at best. For the price, the meal was disappointing."

"I am under the impression that this was the first time Bonterra served dinner on Easter Sunday. Everything was superb. My wife and I had only eaten at Bonterra once before (on a very crowded evening) and had not had an especially memorable experience. "What a great setting for a special lunch! The ambiance was terrific with the high ceilings that allowed in a lot of sunshine - a true mood brightener. "My wife loved our dining experience, so anything I thought is meaningless. My lamb was ordered medium, but was served rare. And it was very fatty. But since my wife and I split the entree, and she had no complaints, I have nothing more to say about that.The unusual building (an old church) makes this a unique setting for a restaurant. The white table cloths make dining there feel like a special occasion. Our waiter was extremely nice. Helpful, friendly, and attentive - but not too much. We were met by a pan handler when we walked one block to our parked car in the dark, so I would recommend springing for the valet parking."

"Bonterra has a great concept but lacks success in execution. As you enter this lovely church structure, the theme quickly dissipates inside. In the attempt to update the interior it seemed to lose its charm and lacked warmth. The wine selection was nice but the menu fell short. Our waiter was awkward. He did a poor job in describing the food to guests. Not sure if it was a lack of passion or knowledge. Overall I see a great potential for an establishment like that but definitely needs work."

"No one waited on us for the first 10 minutes we sat down, not even for water. Flagged down a waiter who was very apologetic & made up for it later. It was probably a miscommunication. Food is delicious, but overpriced. Glad I had a Groupon."

"This place is fantastic. The food was delicious. I had the lamb and it was one of my favorite lamb experiences. I also got a salad and even my salad was amazing. I also loved the service. My waiter was beyond friendly and extremely helpful. Thanks for an amazing dining experience Bonterra! I will definitely be back!"

"My wife and I have eaten at bonterra on numerous occasions. It is very good. However, this past time was not the best simply because they ran out of what we had wanted. It is just something that happens at restaurants. I would still recommend Bonterra to anyone."

"We went for the wines by the glass...and were not disappointed. Unbeknownst to us Wednesdays are half price wines by the glass at the bar. What a treat since we were early for our dinner reservation! Donna, the bartender, was helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating. David was our waiter and a real pro. The appetizers were delicious and more than ample. The lamb loin was perfection. The couscous with the scallops was just slightly underdone, but all of the preparation, seasoning and presentation were excellent. Pricewise, you get what you pay for. We were delighted."

"This was the most disappointing meal we have had in decades. The scallops were not cooked properly and they were few for the high price. The scallops were placed on some chopped asparagus and not a good presentation. The meal was horrible and we left hungry. Would not dine here again even if it was free!"

"The food was very good. This is a very loud place, probably because it is a former church. We experienced a few issues. First, we waited for 12 minutes to valet our car. pawn when we were seated, there was a party going on in the middle of the restaurant with a few dozen people standing up drinking wine. The hostess seated us right beside this party. It was odd having a group of people standing right beside your table. When the people sat down, they were short several chairs. The manager then came over and took the remaining two chairs from our table without saying a word to us. Although we weren't using the chairs, it is common courtesy for a manager to ask permission before taking them. Too many issues for a $200 meal."

"We've had wine at the bar on three occassions on our way to eat elsewhere - this was the first opportunity to dine with Bonterra. I had the arugula salad, which was good, though the dressing was a bit too vinegary. My husband chose the field green salad - delicious. My dinner was the salmon - wonderful. But my husband's lamb dish was the standout! We were too full for desert! The noise level was very high, which made it difficult to have a romantic evening - we really couldn't have a quiet conversation. We were in a small room in the balcony, but it was still very noisy at 9 PM! We'll go back, maybe during the week to have a more romantic experience."

"Very happy w experience! There was a huge party in the main dining rm, so we were seated in the wine cellar. Loved the privacy, but would have liked the temperature a bit warmer. But we get that's its a cellar, so understood. Great service, fab food! Overall we had a wonderful evening w friends and were able to chat without din from surrounding diners. Thx!"
