Ubuntu's food is primarily grown in our own gardens, following the principle of biodynamic farming. Biodynamic farmers place high emphasis on healing and supplying the earth with ingredients that encourage regeneration. Our chef Aaron London and his team begin each morning at the gardens, and prepare dishes that bring out the natural flavors of the herbs and vegetables. Ubuntu restaurant is a manifestation of a dream to bring together many of the things that our owner Sandy Lawrence enjoys in the hope that it may benefit others.

"amazing vegetarian, great service and attention.Portions appear small, but you leave full and satisfied. Wine list is a bit pricey. Great foos combinations with wonderful presentation, flavors explode in your mouth. Desserts were a special treat.....oil oil ice cream, the cheesecake in a jar was the best I ever had.
Highly recommended, but bring money"

"I treated my neighbors (one of whom is vegetarian) to lunch. The three of us shared five dishes total, and had a wonderful experience. The food was heavenly; the service very attentive, friendly and helpful; the ambience of the restaurant pleasant; and our lunch experience perfect."

"The food was delicious and creative. The server shared some insights into the menu, which were helpful since the menu is so eclectic and the descriptions can only begin to describe the dishes. "We had reservations for 8PM, but arrived at 7PM. We were seated at the bar for a few minutes, but a table was found for us despite the Saturday night crowd. Food, service, and cordiality were all outstanding. Neither of us are vegetarians, but we will return."

"This was my 3rd visit to Ubuntu (coming from SF). As a vegetarian, it is always a pleasure to go to a restaurant where I can eat anything on the menu. For that reason alone, I will return. I do have a couple of criticisms. The menu/descriptions seemed to be written in a foreign language. I could not decipher the descriptions, which were borderline obnoxious. And, the portions were way too small. My husband and I left hungry and we had 3 dishes and dessert. Everything was delicious but, when spending that much money, I want to feel satiated. Neither one of us is a big eater, so for us to leave hungry really says something about the portions."

"This was one of the best meals I've ever had. I'm a hardcore meat eater. The menu is all vegetarian. The cooks there made me forget meat. It's that good. Service was great. Presentation amazing. Wine list, reasonable and intriguing. As a seasoned and jaded eater, this is an amazing find. I rank as high as commis--deserving the one michelin star. And I do not think Aziza is as good (also a one star) as this place by a good measure."

"The reason I could not give this restaurant a 5 star rating all the way is because although the food was very tasty , (pricey but worth the uniqueness)the menu and a review in a magazine emphasize this place as vegan. The menu has an * beside each dish which can be made vegan, which included several dishes. When the dishes arrived we thought we got the wrong thing because it was so small. The waitress came back after asking the chef and said because it was vegan they removed the falafel, goat cheese etc $13 for a dish and the way they make it vegan is to eliminate the main part of the dish instead of making the dish vegan. We felt truly ripped off. Paid a lot of money for having a lot of food removed. Felt like false advertising"

"One of the very best dining experiences that I've ever had. Being vegan at dinner when traveling almost always means a meal of sides or something prepared off menu. In addition for me, meals connected to my yoga practice have either been pot luck or gathering at a local juice bar and sandwich shop. The yogic intention, ethics, and values of Ubuntu was a blessing to me. With a menu filled with savory dishes incorporating their own biodynamically grown ingredients was served kind of tapas-style so that each of us at the table got to explore together even of the menu. Serving wines that are organic with low or no sulfites added, and delicious choices of dessert, Ubuntu is the perfect distlliation of exceptional food with compassionate choices."

"The food is very good...unusual combinations that you won't see elsewhere. I wish that they served larger portions since it is all veggie and very pricey. I will go back again but my boyfriend will not even though he did enjoy the dishes we shared (we had 4 dishes + a bottle of wine) since he left hungry but with a very large tab. (By the way, he is not a big eater)."

"AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! We loved Ubuntu. My husband and I are big talkers but we were speechless from this meal. Just sat there silently eating. It may have been the best of my life. Every bite. Great for vegetarians like us and meat eaters. Cannot possibly say enough about this restaurant - just breathtakingly delicious. Order a ton of stuff - try everything. The cheesecake dessert is worth it. The chickpea apps and lavender almonds, the salad, the gnocchi, etc. Go!"

"We reserved over a month ago, I believe, so it felt rude to be quickly seated right next to the front door, but the hostess agreed to let us move one table over. We had five dishes. The grits/beets were good. The yam-stuffed donut was our favorite. we had that twice. The cauliflower/broccolini dish was also very tasty, but they're honestly pushing it with the price on that one because there is plainly so little to it.

The cherry cheesecake-in-a-jar has been great all three times we've been there. perfectly great this time. The chocolate terrine looked like a lot of work to put together given all the components, which is a shame, because there was nothing about it that stood out. The hot chocolate was also pretty unremarkable."

"The food was delicious, but the portions were small. The menu also lacked protein. While I realize this is a vegetarian restaurant, I was dissapointed to see no tofu or tempeh on the menu. Even the 'heavier' dishes on the menu weren't super filling. The onion filled donut with the burrata cheese is not to be missed!"

"This was the best meal I've had in many years. What made it so good was the combination of originality and exquisite preparation that the kitchen carried off for 6 of our 7 dishes; three were excellent, three were amazing. In terms of potential negatives, two things: it's expensive, especially considering the ingredients--perhaps micro cilantro is really expensive, but I think that what you're paying for here is the talent--the end result is wonderful but if you're a restaurant bargain hunter, move on. Ditto if you're a "big eater". If big portions are part of what makes a restaurant your kind of place, you won't get along with this one. Full disclosure; I was there with the love of my life, but think I'm still thinking straight."

"Ubuntu does things with vegetables that no one else does. I've been 6 times now, and it's always interesting and eye-opening. "What more can I say than I have eaten my last 3 dinners in Napa here and will go back my next visit. Outystanding! Incredibly satisfying for vegetarian. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic servers, beautiful anf flavorful food presented creatively on interesting dinnerware. I cancelled my rerservation at another dining spot to eat here two nights in a row. Don't miss the cocoanut milk soup, the grits and mushrooms, the beets, the potatoes, and the olive oil ice cream. The sweet and savory doughnut was a perfect transition from dinner to dessert and the buratta was at its peak!! This is a don't miss spot even for serious carnivores. PS The house secret is out: the staff dines onmeat nightly and nearly all are carnivores!"

"First thing to know, this is a vegetarian restaurant. They can also cook dishes as vegan also. We were a party of 4, with one as the vegetarian. We thought we would cater to them completely and take them to a good restaurant. Little did we know that we would love it also. For 4 people, we got 8 dishes and shared them family style. each dish was from $10 to about $18. It was a great dinner. we were full, and we split deserts, ordering just two. Good desserts also. Some of the dishes sounded scary to us meat eaters, but they were full of flavor, prepared extremely well, presented well, and worked. From the lentils to the fennel prepared three ways. A good night out for all."

"The food was fabulous but several of the dishes were a bit light on portion sizes. The most noteable was a salad with slices of truffled pecorino cheese and fresh greens for $17. My boyfriend complained that we just paid $17 for 3 small slices of cheese and some "weeds". It was tasty though and he was paying!"

"I loved the food at Ubuntu-- a tremendous amount of care and prep time went into each of the four dishes I ordered. Rarely does one get to experience food this way. "The Ubuntu menu is comprised of 'small plates'. However, before you visit you should be aware just how small these plates can be. One of the dishes was some tiny carrots (seedling sized) that combined would been equivalent to eating perhaps two or three baby 'snack' carrots. Given the ingredients are locally grown vegetables - and not some exotic, rare meat/fish - you might feel ripped off having to pay between $13 and $17 for such small quantities.

Given the quality I ignored the portion size and just enjoyed the food. I'll absolutely go back next time I'm in Napa, but I'll make sure I don't arrive for dinner feeling really hungry."

"The waitstaff not only know the menu and can suggest alternatives for people with food sensitivities but all work a few hours a week at the organic kitchen garden that supplies much of the produce. The dishes are a delicious gustatory adventure. One's palate is treated to a succession of flavors, much like the experience of sipping an excellent vintage. A dish can start off savoury, then become sweet, then have a floral finish. Wow! The small plates are more generous portions than one usually finds in upscale restaurants. One of our party didn't care for one of our eleven selections. The waitstaff immediately apologized, took it off our bill, and then asked for detailed feedback so that they could improve the dish!"

Does not jive with the idea of growing your own food and serving it as healthy dovetail to yoga studio. Good example of California gentrification. "I was very disappointed with our experience at Ubuntu. I understood the concept there and that items were going to be smaller and meant for sharing. In my opinion the portions were unrealistically small. Our table of three ordered what our server suggest would be enough - about three items per person. All of the items were so small that it made it awkward to share between three adults. Also, how is one expected to share a soup/stew without additional bowls or a ladle. The bean stew amounted to a cup size portion found at any other restaurant. It was more liquid than stew.

Overall, out tab with a modestly priced bottle of wine came to nearly $200. We left there hungry. We actually went to another restaurant near by for a bit to eat."

Food - Food was definitely interesting but did not taste that great and the portions were extremely small. Probably need to eat entire menu to satisfy hunger and I dont even eat much.
Service - Good service could have made a world of difference.
Although our waitress put on a great smile on her face, she was not nice at all. Did not offer too many suggestions, was pushy when it came to ordering, clearly expressed her annoyance once we told her we were not going to order more food. I asked for her light up the candle on our table but she never did. Our bread ran out and she never offered to bring more, did not refill my water."

If the food was priced more in the $9-13 range vs. the $13-17 range it would have been much more worth it. "As always, diverse selection of creative flavor combinations that work. Menu is a little misleading with only the descriptions of sometimes esoteric ingredients but the dishes all have a "wow" factor. Try the signature lavendar almonds and any of the flatbreads or garden type salads. The persimmon jelly donut with the burrata was a chart topper. "Worth the drive from San Francisco. Exceptionally thoughtful and delicious vegetarian food made with the freshest ingredients. Standouts were the seasoned almonds with the appetizer trio, sunflower risotto and a buttery-smooth squash soup. The menu is constantly changing, but bring friends and share a variety of dishes. The dishes are smallish, so our waitress recommended we try a double order of our selections and share family style among five people. We had lots of fun sampling and were surprisingly full at the end of the meal. There was a $20 corkage fee for our champagne. Total came to $70 per person. The music that night was a mixture of British groups like The Smiths and Radiohead, and others like The Killers."

"This was our first time eating a full vegetarian meal and it was WONDERFUL! We were skeptical but tried a bunch of different dishes (great variety of flavors offered) and were wowed by almost every single one. Favorites were the butternut squash soup and the persimmon donut with burrata cheese and mushroom 'bacon' bits. The dessert was also fantastic. The restaurant itself is beautiful and it was nice to see the head chef there, plating food and inspecting everything that was delivered to the patrons. Service was top notch!"

"This was our second visit to Ubuntu and the food is excellent. The service for our second visit was well below par. First we were told that we should order 3-5 items per person and share the items. During our first visit we were also pressured to order several items per person. In both visits we felt pressured to order more items than necessary. Once we told our server we wanted only 4 items, the service went down hill. Even though we ordered a $75 bottle of wine, 4 items and dessert--bill was close to $150 for two people-you would have thought we had ordered just bread and water. I normally don't get too worked up about the service but the service on January 1, 2010, was enough to keep us from future visits."

"Food was inventive and I thoroughly enjoyed the corn grits with egg. However, the service ruined our evening. I have not recalled ever being asked if a plate could be taken away with half the food still on that plate. That night I was asked multiple times. Also, the large platters they use and small tables make for a terrible pairing. They tried to fit five platters on our table at once. This was all within 25 minutes of being seated. We felt rushed and unwelcome.

Then service became nonexistent. I would have liked to have another glass of wine, but our server did not show up after all the food was forced on our table. In fact, I counted 35 minutes from the time I finished my last sip of wine until our server came back to our table."

"We truly enjoyed our visit to Ubuntu on Sunday, December 13, 2009. Ubuntu is a beautiful restaurant with a very friendly atmosphere. The food was delicious. Never knew vegetarian cooking could have so many surprises. Each dish was prepared with so many little details that made for an outstanding presentation. The waiter that served us was so polite, patient and helpful. He was extremely knowledgable and was just a delight. "We were a few minutes early for our reservation but were seated without delay. Of 4 of us, two had been some time ago before the menu changed to 'small plates', and had raved about it. We all thought the food was excellent, but the portion size was so small that it made putting together a meal from many dishes rather daunting. We would prefer fewer dishes and large portion sizes. Funnily enough, the cheesecake was still a large portion. However, it was a good experience as the service was extremely good: knowledgeable, helpful -none of the awful gaffes like interrupting diners' conversation or being overly friendly,as sometimes is the case in even top restaurants. We were steered to good wines."

"We chose Ubuntu Napa as a destination lunch spot while visiting wine country. We decided to go there because it was my birthday and we knew the ambience and food would make for a very special occasion. Everything about the restaurant delivered and exceeded our expectations. My father, who does not like vegetarian food, said this was a 'seminal experience' for him and that this was 'the first really outstanding vegetarian meal' he had ever had. The staff is friendly and helpful and we were even able to meet the chef! The main courses (which are more like small plates) were inventive - fresh, and made with complex ingredients which complemented each other. The desserts were outstanding as well."

"I visited the restaurant on Thanksgiving eve. The restaurant was not crowded -- probably not a popular night out. The food was fantastic. Especially the itti bitti baby vegetable salad with horsradish sauce and the bean stew.

We didn't feel especially welcome with a five year old but, fortunately, she is charming and, although refusing all food except bread, did manage to make herself at home, quietly, with a couple of colored pens and the back of a couple of paper menus. We'd go there again, for sure, and I'd pay for the stew recipe. (Luckily we had anticipated her reluctance to try new things and fortified her with a couple of slices of pizza before we started out.)"

"I had an overall good experience at Ubuntu. I'm vegan and enjoyed the food that we had. We got the three appetizers and they were all yummy. Lavender Almonds, Castelvetrano Olives, and chickpea salad. Then we had rustic rancho gordo bean stew and homemade fregola pasta.

"The food is well prepared and perfectly seasoned. I come from a restaurant background myself so I underdstand food cost really well and I find the menu price to portion ratio to be a bit out of hand. For $14 I expect to be able to see a "baby" carrot without using a magnifying glass. Like I said, the food is great, I just would expect a bit more for my dollar. We ended up spending $100 for three small plates, 2 glasses of wine and a dessert. Then we went down to Zuzus and shared a few more plates so we could feel full."

"Wonderful, as always. A menu is almost unnecessary at Ubuntu - you can just close your eyes and point to something at random, and whatever comes will be superb. Really. Even our kids love Ubuntu - and we're not vegetarians."

"The food here is awesome. Everything we had was spot-on, from the quality of the ingredients to the flavors and textures of the finished product. My only complaint was that the bus staff sometimes wanted to take our plates before we were finished licking them clean."
