As the name implies, Artisanal features a scrumptious selection of 250 hand-crafted cheeses from around the world. In the back of the dining room is the cheese cave, a temperature and humidity controlled room, where a number of the world’s finest artisanally-made cheeses are aged to optimum ripeness and peak flavor. Adjacent to the dining room is the wine bar, which boosts 75 wines by the glass.

"Excellent dinner at the best bistro in NYC. All the courses were very very good. Bibb lettuce, steak au poivre , hangar steak and the profiteroles. This time we had a cocktail and then one glass of a nice come du Rhine. We highly recommend Artisanal and we always look forward to going back"

"Indifferent service for such a pretty restaurant. Food was fine with no special flourishes. We were informed that liquor couldn't be serves til noon and never offered a beverage or juice. Well known for a night scene and cheese. But the only game in town in that area for early brunch. It gets the job done. Good food. And no ambience"

"I hadn't been to Artisanal for a few years, but it was a favorite for a long time. This barely feels like the same restaurant. The up-selling is relentless and off-putting, the food (except for the cheese) and cocktails mediocre and in the case of the "half lobster," simply stingy. What was once a special place now feels like a faceless chain. I'm sad to see this happen, and I hope the course can correct."

"Artisinal is one of those places you hate to give a great review because you dont want to never be able to get a table again. The food is always so consistently delicious with excellent service to match. My husband ( who eats out every other day) had a steak and really never is so complimentary - he must have remarked 10 times on how delish it was. I had a lobster Salad and on the plate it looked ok but really every bite was enjoyable. I took a client there a few weeks ago- shes still talking about the quality of her food from what feels like an unassuming French Bistro. Go. and Enjoy!"

"Shared 4 types of cheeses with meats and fruit and a bottle of wine with a friend and it was absolutely wonderful! Our waiter helped us pick out the wine and the cheese specialist helped us with the cheeses. Great service and such a perfect way to catch up with a friend."

"After some initial effort by the hostess to seat us at an undesirable table (in a half empty dining room), we were shown to a desirable table. We had a good waiter who provided good service. Nice bread, excellent escargot, good salmon, good beet salad, very average French onion soup, soggy, but tasty fries. We had the delicious, but pricey St. Emillion by the glass. The restaurant fills us & has a nice buzz for lunch."

"My family has dined at Artisinal on a few occasions and selected it for a birthday this week. From the outset, the experience was poor. In spite of the fact that the restaurant had several empty tables, the woman who showed us to our table was reluctant to allow us to take a table other than the one the she initially offered. Our first courses came before we had been given bread, which posed a problem because one of us ordered pate and wanted bread to accompany it. When it came time for our main courses, one of us had cheese delivered while the other of us had to wait half an hour for the cooked entree. When we expressed our displeasure, the manager was apologetic but did not remedy the situation. Think twice before choosing Artisinal!"

"Went with a friend on one rainy night last week. What a great respite from the raindrops. The service was good enough but what I'd call tepid; there was a table next to us with a couple of boisterous children and that was a bit of a downer but the food was delicious. We started with the octopus. I had the steak au poivre while my friend, the duck. Both of us thought the dinner was wonderfully prepared and portion sizes generous. But. Then. The. Cheese. Do yourself a favor and have the cheese at this spot. We let the waitress help us select three beauties and I swear to heaven above, days later and I can still taste those creamy gems. Would definitely go back for at least the cheese and wine."

"This was a return visit to this restaurant as it has in the past been exceptionally good with regards to service and food. What a different experience this time. The place was empty on a Saturday night which shocked us but after dinner we completely understood. We had what had to be the most obnoxious waiter in the world. He argued with me about every selection, mostly about the wine.He insisted on helping me choose a wine, even though I told him I didn't require assistance, and then pushed wines in the $100+ range even though I was looking at $50-$60 wines. He argued about the choice of steak, insisting the one for $20 more was a better choice. Steak arrived cold and not cooked properly. Onion soup was good . $200 for a stressful dinner."

"Went on a hot day. The restaurant has inadequate air conditioning (and has for years), so if it's above 85 outside, rest assured you will sweat inside the restaurant. There were large tears in the banquet seating (which, by the way, is too low for the tables). The message of the restaurant ... we've given up and really don't care anymore."

"This was our first visit to Artisanal and won't be our last! The service was wonderful, attentive but not overbearing, and our lunch exceptional! Highly recommend to anyone who wishes a fine culinary experience in a low key atmosphere. Prices range from mid to high, but overall worth every penny!"

"I went to Artisanal for the first time with a friend that recommended it. Arrived early at this french bistro and the bartender was wonderful at offering me a tasting of wines until I found the right one. Then, later for dinner I ordered a bottle of the Bordeaux that I liked. The table staff were attentive. We visited the cheese alcove and discussed with the chef which delicious 5 cheeses to taste. The fondue was tasty, and they catered to my friend's special dietary needs too. Had a fantastic time catching up with great conversation over the whole wonderful experience. Don't miss out! Can't wait to go again."

"I travel 100 days a year and eat at restaurants all over the country. I found the food to be average, at best. For my entree, my server placed an incorrect order. The service was otherwise very slow. Both the server and manager were far more interested in doting on a table occupied by two attractive women. Although I appreciate that the server apologized for placing an inaccurate order, my experience with the manager was distasteful. On 3-4 occasions, I tried to get his attention, but he was ogling the two aforementioned patrons. As I was leaving, I let him know the service was slow and inaccurate. He chastised me for not telling him sooner. Go figure. I won't be back."

"but was delighted by the entire menu! My companion and I shared the gouda and stout fondu as an appetizer, then I went for the sole and he had a gigantic pork chop. We finished with profiteroles (me -- hey, it was my birthday!) and lemon tart. Delicious! Our servers were gracious and seemed to be very proud to work there -- definitely a good sign. I will be back as soon as I can afford it!"

"Waiters here seem to think that attitude enhances good food, but they are wrong: it's just an irritant, particularly when they mess up your order. The positive thing about the mistake was that the attitude gave way to apologies and a friendlier attitude thereafter.

"Book the cave/wine cellar - it is a small private room that fits four comfortably. There are a variety of cheeses on the cooler shelves, smells like cheese. However, cheese it their specialty. Go for the artisanal blend cheese fondue with beef tips, green apples and various other dip-ables. The gnocchi appetizer is also excellent. Great service, food & ambiance. Shared a wonderful and memorable evening with friends."

"While the gougeres were absolutely terrific and the salad was very good, we were underwhelmed by the brunch entrees. I ordered the fish and frites. Some of the frites were okay, but most were actually limp! The steak and eggs my companion ordered were just okay. Disappointing. The service was friendly. We're willing to try again, but would focus on the cheese next time."

"I love Artisanal and I make it a point to go whenever I am in NY, even if it means going alone (like this time). The food was great, as always. I found the croque madame a little greasy for my taste, but I suppose that is to be expected."

"Probably closest to Paris's finest bistros, this is always a pleasure to experience. The food is superb, the cheeses and wines among the best in the country, The staff is friendly and efficient. I have been here for serious business lunches. It seems to be the choice of people in the arts, in publishing and filmmaking, just as it is the choice of people of good taste (no pun) in many other areas as varied as medicine and business.
It will always be a top choice for both celebratory and casual events.

"The food was very good. The cheese expert came to our table and was very friendly and helpful in our selection process, but the waiter was an absolute jerk. Unless you plan on buying 3+ items for each diner, expect to be treated like scum. But I gave a really bad tip to get back at the waiter."

"This is a hot spot, and great for a party of one or groups. Timing is everything for dinner. Wait too late in the evening, and the wait staff is less attentive. Dont take it personally, the place gets super busy. Overall the food and service are great."
