Blue Duck Tavern, a contemporary neighborhood restaurant, invites its guests to gather and celebrate in good taste with a menu focusing on the freshest ingredients available from local purveyors and artisans. "I have enjoyed meals at Blue Duck many times, but the service on this latest trip was not impressive. The hostesses were disorganized and awkwardly avoiding the very large group of various patrons who were trying to check in for their respective reservations, and the wait staff really hovered to an annoying degree - one waiter asked my guest THREE times how he liked his burger. It made for an awkward meal. The food, however, was delicious as always."

"Two of us had the scallops, which were outstanding. Oysters on the half shell were good but sandy. Service spotty as they got a couple of things wrong and we had to beg for bread. But everything was corrected quickly and it was an enjoyable dinner."

"We made a reservation for the night of my daughter's last GWU final. We were lucky to get in with only a few days notice -- but the 9:15 reservation probably didn't hurt our chances. We found the bread fantastic, and the shaved brussell sprout salad was like a nice crispy cole slaw.
For entrees, we had their Chicken with lemons, my wife had the scallops, and I had the suckling pig -- all were wonderful.
A duet of sides (pureed potatoes and asparagus) rounded out the effort.
We finished up with the apple pie and their honey vanilla ice cream -- excellent finish to a wonderful meal. Great food, and significantly less than your typical steak house."

"This was the first year celebrating the birthday of my two May adults at Blue Duck Tavern. The hostesses were excellent. They wished my son a happy birthday when he joined us at the table. This from a brief mention I made that I was celebrating the birthdays of my son and daughter when my daughter and I arrived. Our food was excellent. The service was a little spotty. The appetizers were outstanding. The crab cakes were very good but the rack of lamb, roasted pig and the wagyu culotte of beef were all outstanding. We also enjoyed the family style vegetables and triple fries. All in all, an enjoyable experience."

"This is the perfect place to take clients for lunch. Big windows allow lots of light, or you can sit outside and enjoy the fountain and sunshine. Elegant surroundings, first-class service and excellent food. I love this place! Crab cakes were perfectly done and my guest enjoyed her burger. The shaved Brussels' sprouts salad was a taste treat as well. Finish with their excellent coffee."

"Everything was great except for the hostess service. They ladies at the front were rude and unresponsive when asked how long it would take to get seated. Restaurant was nearly empty and they seated us nearly 20 min later than our reservation. They acted as though we were an inconvenience. We asked to sit outside and were told no only later did the food server actually let us sit out when he was seating us. The waitstaff was fantastic. Hostesses were not the caliber I would expect at The Blue Duck."

"My family and I spend a lot of time traveling and trying new food and cuisine. This place is definitely the best I've been to in DC and is definitely top 5 in this country for new American cuisine for me. "We ate at Blue Duck Tavern the night we arrived in DC. By coincidence it was in out hotel. Dinner was great, the hostesses were all very nice, and the service was ok. My husband likes to have breakfast at the hotel so we had breakfast there every morning. Boy was the service awful. First three different service people came to take the order and they still couldn't get it right. If it were up to me I wouldn't have had breakfast there. It was too expensive for the poor service.

"The food at Blue Duck Tavern is always fantastic. Unlike dinner however, the service at brunch can be a little unrefined. The maitre d' showing us to our table but forgetting to give us our menus, multiple instance of dropped silverware when clearing plates, plus an awkward moment where a server got their suit jacket caught in a chair while refilling glasses lead our group to believe that either it was just an off morning or brunch service is the BDT's version of AAA ball and you don't get called up to dinner service until you've proven yourself. That said, there was nothing so bad that it would keep us from returning again simply because the food is so great and our past experience with service was terrific."

"The entrance to the restaurant was a little hard to find so I ended up asking the valet at the Westin Hotel. He directed me to the entrance inside the hotel, but I was taken aback when I walked into what looked like the kitchen prep area. Luckily their was someone working in the room who took me to the restaurant lobby. After that bit of confusion, the experinece picked up. It was hard to make a decision of what to choose, everything sounded so good. My friend and I opted for the 12 hour roasted suckling pig was amazing, it just melts in your mouth. I had the roasted parsnips as a side which were also very good. My friend ordered fries but ended up with mashed potatoes. However, the waiter quickly brought fries as well. They were great."

"The Blue Duck Tavern used to be one of my favorite local restaurants. What a disappointment! The food ingredients may have been fresh but the meal was far from delicious. We had a very pleasant waiter when he finally showed up. The service was very, very slow."

"I do not know who the people are that rated this place top notch but it has much to be desired..the cucumber cerviche with crab tasted like a pureed pickle.AWFUL!...thank goodness they took that off of the bill. The bitter green salad was WORSE than the cerviche..the greens just appeared to be wet. When we asked for some more dressing and sampled just the dressing,it was wretched to put it mildly...my companion was too nice to tell the waiter that it was a mess...the mashed potatoes were creamy but had the consistency of baby food. The salmon was phenomenal I might add and so was the beef short rib. The risotto needed to thicken before presented but then was pretty tasty (at first it was just runny)Apple pie was dry, drinks good at $14"

"We were looking forward to brunch. Although there were numerous servers around, service leaves a lot to be desired. Drink orders had to be requested repeatedly, so much so, that out of frustration, I decided to cancel one of them. Food orders had to be requested repeatedly also. By the time my appetizer arrived, so did my entree. The crab frittata was a misnomer. Crab could not be tasted nor found.
I cannot recommend Blue Duck Tavern. I can only dissuade others from dining there."

"Easy to get to via the Foggy Bottom metro station and the Orange/Blue lines, open seating area with a full view of the open kitchen, friendly, knowledgeable service that was personal and attentive without being over-bearing, and delicious farm-to-table food made a great birthday meal. We sampled duck consume, a field greens salad, vegetarian risotto, grilled lettuce, a pork T-bone, and grits. All delicious. We'll go back!"

"We had a remarkable 20 anniversary dining experience at the tavern over the weekend. The food was exceptional and the service shined. Nial, David, and other servers were attentive but not overbearing, and their friendly and helpful care made this a memorable and enjoyable event. We hope to return again for a special occasion. My only minor suggestion for improvement is to figure out a way to reduce the music bass that filters in from the lounge -- or play jazz instead of or to mask the percussive undertones that interrupt the ambiance of the restaurant."

"Very small portions (entree was about 4 bites - ive definitely haf tasting portions more filling than this!!). I had thought the waiter was pushy for suggesting I order an additional side to my $20 bring entree, but I guess I needed it. But why do I need to order separately a necessary component of a meal.
Other than that, the waiter forgot our bread and, forgot the crispy pig ear on our crispy pig ear salad. My entree was salty almost to the point of being inedible (the pork belly confit), and we found out you have to pay forrefills on the regular coffee, ugh.
It's a nice space, but given the prices and level of to-do about this place, they are really shoddy on details. Left hungry and unsatisfied."

"Reservations might be hard to come by at the Blue Duck, but it's well worth the wait if you want a prime time dinner. Inside the Grand Hyatt hotel, you walk through a decorative state of the art kitchen with several food stations busy with chefs creating amazing dishes. Our group started out with some of the best oysters we ever had, then moved onto the bone marrow appetizer and savored every dish thereafter. The Blue Duck did not let us down in ANY area from service, to wine, to delicious dishes and outstanding dessert. We will definitely be returning to the Blue Duck.... many times!"

I found the service horrid - the servers were not attentive, forgot the second course (which as the host I did not realize until my guests told me on leaving - no individual soups or salad, only the group initial appetizers). The main course was luke warm in temperature. I would not recommend or return."

"I frequent Blue Duck Tavern several times a year, primarily for lunch and I am never disappointed. Service is always outstanding and the food superb. My group had several dishes but the shaved brussel sprout salad was perfect. A great blend of flavors and not bitter. I would recommend even for those who don't usual like brussel sprouts. We also had the fish special, perfectly cooked, and the risotto.

"The food was the standout to our brunch. The pastries were good but should have been a bit warmer. The rib hash was the standout as other reviewers mentioned. The apple pie was huge, but could be warmed up, too. I did not love the mimosa I got. The service was very competent but not intrusive. Was a little concerned when a hostess was slightly curt to someone who walked in and inquired about outdoor seating. Was my birthday but did not receive any special treatment or acknowledgement. I would recommend this place and would love to try it for dinner at some point. The portion sizes were good and I did not think the restaurant too expensive for the quality/service."
