"I made a reservation for a group of 7 - for a business lunch. We were seated right away at a nice big round table. Since it was later, the restaurant was fairly quiet, so we could easily talk. We shared some appetizers and everyone enjoyed their food. Excellent service, attention to detail and as always, the food was great."

"This is a very nice restaurant. The food is good, but not great. For the prices it should be a bit better. I had chicken & waffles and the meal consisted of only one piece of chicken that was a bit dry. Their drinks were good. Service was very good."

"This is one of my favorite restaurants. Exceptional service and food every time! King Fish is a great blend between Nola style food and contemporary American. Whether you're craving short steak, jambalya, oysters or lobster gnocchi - there is a dish to suit your culinary appetite.
If you're looking for a fun treat and care to imbibe, order a sazerac and marvel at the blue absinthe flames as they prepare it table side for you.
The staff is great and very attentive. Great ambiance with fun jazz and soul inspired art adorning the walls.
King Fish is true San Mateo hot spot that is worth it every time."

"NIce spot for dinner. Food was good. New Orleans style, but repackaged for California. Big menu but not overwhelming. Dozen Ice Cold Oysters were delicious! Had the Sea Bass (hooked). Nice flavor, not a large portion. Mustard Green Salad is misnamed. It should be called Green Salad with mustard dressing. I thought it would be nice southern twist to use Mustard Green. Tasted fine though. Saw the Jambalaya, nothing like what you would get in New Orleans which would have been sloppier, but I would prefer it this way. We sat downstairs. It was a bit noisy for a party of 5. Had to do some shouting. Overall good experience."

"We went to Kingfish upon a recommendation. Everyone from the hosts to the waitstaff to the water refill guy were all VERY nice and personable. This would be one of their best qualities. Their food was good but not fine dining. We had salads, entrees and dessert. The presentation was nice. My only complain was that the food was rushed unnecessarily. We just received our bread when the salads arrived (fine) but then received our entrees shortly after. I guess they are used to trying to get people with kids in and out quickly?"

"Came with husband on a impromptu date and was pleasantly surprised. Fresh oysters were very fresh and tasty. Husband had the scallops and prawns which were delicious. The lobster ravioli was good however the lobster pieces were quite small. The waiter recommended a nice Sauvignon Blanc as well as a nice dessert to finish."

"Kingfish was recommended to us by some friends for its fun ambiance. We decided to try it out for dinner. For appetizers, we ordered the Caesar salad, fried calamari, octopus salad, and the cornbread. All of which were very tasty. However, the entrees we ordered were disappointing. We had the grilled salmon, sirloin, and sea bass. The sirloin was overly marinaded in teriyaki sauce and the salmon drowned in the sweet pineapple salsa. For the price, I expected better cuisines. Although the decor and ambiance were great, we will likely not be returning anytime soon due to the quality of food."

"While the food was good the waiter and bus staff were in a hurry to get our orders and rush us through our dining experience. More than once my plates were removed form the table with anyone askeing me if I was done; which I wasn't.
Thenoise level left something to be desired.
I have been to the Kingfish a lot of the past few years and have never had such a disappointing dining experience there like this week.
I think I will just stick to going there for drinks if i decide to return"

"Mixed fresh seafood appetizer for two (3 crab rolls, 6 oysters on half shell, 4 tiger prawns, tuna tartare) plus sauces, bread and butter were excellent. My wife's prime rib was quite good, average presentation. The wine list is first rate.
But the NY steak I had was tough as shoe leather, and although I was very hungry, just couldn't finish it. To their credit, the restaurant eliminated the charge and comped us with a nice dessert. Manager chose not to visit us; this is a serious mistake. Even though the wait staff was efficient, apologetic and courteous, I felt that management should have spoken with us, even if only for a few seconds. I've been a patron of this restaurant for many years but I'll not return for a while"

"It was horrible! I will never go back. We both ordered Prime Rib cooked Medium. What a joke. I sent back my dinner twice and my friend sent her back 3 times. They continued to come out rare. Finally the waiter recommend a steak for my friend. That was finally cook right. No manager came over and they had the nerve to charge for her meal. Will never go back nor will I recommend it to anyone."

"I was a bit disappointed. I had been to Kingfish on another occasion in the afternoon and absolutely loved it! This time it was a Saturday night and the place was packed in. The service was absolutely fine. I seemed to be witnessing the manager or owner walking around overseeing the operation, but he seemed to make his staff nervous. We had a busser who kept apolgizing when he refilled our water glass, like he wasn't being quick enough. It was so noisy that I could hardly hear my husband who was sitting very close to me. I felt as though I was sitting in the middle of a factory. Luckily the food was tasty - a little over priced, but good. The wait staff was very attentive, just not comfortable."

"We love going to Kingfish, we try to go once or twice a month. It has a good ambiance and good food. The chef recently changed so the food tasted a little different but overall we had a great time. The only thing I would change is their dessert options, I had their bread pudding and it was not very good, I was almost going to send it back. Can they bring their brownies and berry tarts at the end of dinner. I would love for them to be a part of the dessert menu."

"OK but not great. In a few words, tasty but not the traditional fare of N'awlins. Scallops etouffee (crawfish is traditional) had enormous scallops, but the sauce was very watery. Same for the lobster gnocchi, watery sauce. And the gnocchi were an unappetizing gray color. Hurricanes tasted like mai tais (tropical)--good tasting but not the usual on Bourbon St. Beignets also the ball-shaped version (like in the Gourmet cookbooks), not the large rectangular ones found at the Cafe du Monde, and with some dipping sauces. Hard brick ambience and moderate noise were fine for us at an early dining hour, but I can understand how some noise ratings are 'energetic' from other reviewers--likely gets quite loud."

"I hadn't been here in a year and looked forward to it. Unfortunately the food fell way short of good. The crab bisque was served barely warm and had very little crab in it (one chunk). The seared Ahi was supposed to be a favorite but it was so bland. I rarely salt my food when eating out but the sauce was so bland that I had to salt the fish. It was also served with room temperature soggy breaded carrots. I asked if they were supposed to be hot and they said no. They were seriously terrible, flimsy with soggy breading. I was really disappointed, especially for the high prices. With 1 glass of wine, split appetizer soup and entree I spent $70 and left very unsatisfied."

"We have never been to Kingfish before but decided to try it for Valentine's dinner reading the other Open Table reviews. What a mistake! The setting was not romantic or even classic but more like a ordinary dining setting. We sat upstairs where there was no fancy tables, no subdued lighting, no intimacy. We felt like I was at some formula chain restaurant.
The special menu was not exciting one bit. I don't mind paying a premium for great meals but this one at $75.00 prix fixe was ordinary and not worth it.
I will say our server was pleasant and helpful in suggesting which choices would be best.
Sorry, but we will not return to this restaurant nor will be recommend it to anyone."

"Skirt steak lovers - it doesn't get better than Kingfish.We return for it time and again. We also tried the french dip for the 1st time and it was great - thin sliced rib eye, so tender on a crisp outer, soft inner roll perfect with horseradish and au jus. wonderful with thin crispy fries. Tried the jambalaya (just okay, not very flavorful sadly) and corn bread appetizer for the first time, didn't care for it, has a lot of cheese not listed on the description. Banana foster bread pudding very good and the service excellent. Valet parking makes it easy to frequent.Can be loud depending on where you sit but great atmosphere and ambience. Professional friendly staff get A+"

"Enjoyed an early Valentine's dinner before the crowd on Valentine's Day. I guess others had the same idea! The place was packed, even then, our reservation wait was 5-minutes and the food was excellent, the wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable and the total dinner experience was outstanding. There was a large birthday party celebrating next to us so it was a bit noisy and did inhibit our conversation a little but it was acceptable due to their occasion.
I would recommend this restaurant to others in a "heartbeat", if you like Cajun food! We do plan on returning again when it isn't so close to a holiday, perhaps during the week to again enjoy dining there."

"Went for Valentine's Day and the set menu seemed to be pretty good. The only thing that wasn't great was the service. I don't know if you have to request bread but we didn't get any bread until the 3rd course when I asked for it. If you have request for bread, it wasn't stated anywhere on the menu (this was a special menu too). Along with no bread, our service was painfully slow. The first 2 courses took forever to come out and our waitress wasn't very attentive to us. After requesting the bread during the 3rd course, the service got remarkably better. Our waitress was always there and she took some time to chat with us. Not sure what happened, but there was a complete 180 after getting bread. lol"

"It took a little past our reservation to get seated, the restaurant was unusually busy that Saturday night due to the unexpected warm weather. The manager was apologetic and made sure we were taken care of once we were seated. Our waitress was fantastic and very friendly. Food came out pretty fast and was delicious. I don't recommend the cheese plate app, it was just plain blah.. But I had the Lemonade Fried Chickenfor dinner and that was just perfect."

"We are usually happy with the food and selection, however the special menu was not very special. All three of us in our table where disappointed not only with the selection but quality of the food. Spent a lot of money for something very mediocre . I my self was ready to leave and eat at McDonald's by my second dish. It will probably be a while till I go back to kingfish but when I do I'm sticking to their regular menu."
