"The food was excellent and the service understated, but attentive. Best of all, it was quiet, with no noisy kids. A place where grown-ups can have a great meal and enjoy time with each other. Prices were higher than average, but not unreasonable, and the whole experience was well worth it. We will be back again."

"We both had EXELLENT meals. The tables are too close to each other, I could hear the conversations on both sides of us and the server could not fit around the sides, so brought our food to us by reaching over my head! I had my back to the room, so this kept startling me, a food dish would just appear to be floating over my head without warning! I thought that the paper place mats placed over the lovely white table cloths were tacky. On the positive side, we declined dessert and we were given 2 wonderful truffles on the house--a very nice gesture."

"I have been going to Birk's for years, pretty much whenever I am in the San Jose area. It is pricy but good quality food. Known for their steaks but they have a lot of variety. Great wine list. Only complaint is the noise level but that is just because it is always full which is a testament to how good it is."

"After reading a couple reviews mentionIng the great service and food, I decided to take the family out to dine at Birks (Saturday). Summary: The restaurant's impression is "aged". Furnishings still do their job. Even the restaurant was not crowded at all, service was very slow and inattentive. It took almost 15 minuted to get a drink after we sat down. The food was ok in quality / taste, but nothing exciting: i.e. the peppercorn sauce tasted like a ready mix sauce, but nothing adequate for a filet. Salads not crispy. Ceasar sauce was watery. The Espresso was far away from being authentic and was watery. Bottom line: Upscale steakhouse prices (food and beverages) for just average food. Definitely not an upscale experience."

"I have hosted business lunches at Birk's for many years, and it is one of the very few places where I can honestly say I've never had a sub-par meal there. Quite the contrary, every meal there has been nothing short of excellent. Their hardwood grilled steaks are always seared and cooked to perfection -- savory and juicy. The bone-in rib chop steak is a serious must-try. Their seafood is very fresh and amazingly good. The seafood paella is a great go-to dish, and I had a mahi-mahi special at my last visit that was very good. Their salads and pasta dishes are also not to be looked over -- my clients often rave about these dishes while I usually tend to have one of my "usual" dishes there. Birk's is a Bay Area mainstay of lunch dining."

"My husband and I met colleagues this past week for dinner at Birk's. We were seated immediately when we arrived. Had a reservation, but a lot of places still make you wait for seating -- not the case with Birk's. Great ambience, as well. We eat at Birk's quite often, but usually sit in the bar area. The bar staff is exceptional -- often recommending great appetizers, desserts, etc."

"I had never been to Birk's and it was exactly what we were hoping for. When we arrived it was before the lunch rush and fairly quiet, but by the time we left it was hopping. The server was very friendly and attentive. The food was great, we had an array, appitizers, soup, salad, sandwich and a steak, plus dessert. All were great! We will definitely go back."

"Expense account central in the valley during the week, great steaks.
This is a classic get a deal done sort of place, I have been coming here on and off for many many years. The quality remains as well as the quite good wine list. Birk's is a place with very good food and a mostly attentive staff, there are times that we get service errors. I will of course come back again."

"This is directed to our waiter, Martin. He needs to brush up on his customer service skills and maybe he'll get some better tips. We had a table for 3 people. Two of us arrived first and ordered drinks from a different waitress from the happy hour menu. When our third guest arrived, Martin was our waiter and he advised that happy hour was over and she could not order from those specials - this was only 10 minutes after we were served and at least 10 minutes before the time happy hour ends. When I questioned him, he explained (for a long time) he'd been told that people at the tables were not allowed to partake of the happy hour specials and offered to speak to the manager. He made a scene at the table when we were trying to enjoy ourselves."

"I miss Steve. He was the one to set the tone at Birk's. The management now has hits and misses. Still love the Steak Bits but the Carpaccio was not impressive at all. Should be in the Italian style. Very thin slices, w/ capers and a drizzle of excellent olive oil. Don't need the brioche or mustard. I guess its for people who don't know any better. Our waiter was excellent! I had an obnoxious dinner companion and the waiter was able to handle him. Thanks for that. The cheese plate was tolerable but the person who created it needs to go back to the culinary school or maybe enroll in a cheese class. The Lavoush was nice but a miss. Why is the bread hot? Is it stale or reused from another table?"

"Bitk's check- in policy and those responsible can be hectic, those offering tables, arrogant and really cold. The "well you only have 15 minutes" and attitude could much improve.. that is the biggest turn-off as you stand in no-man's land and made to feel (with your guests) like jerks.

"Went there for dinner before the maroon 5 concert and had an hour planned for dinner there. We told the waiter that we were in kind of a rush and we didn't want apps and salads just our entrees. We also ordered 2 glasses of wine to enjoy with our dinner. The place wasn't terribly busy so we all thought this would be fine. We ordered and made sure to tell the waiter to rush our meals and he said no problem. He brought our wine and then disappeared. We did not see him again for about 40 minutes and this was only because I asked a manager for our check because we had to leave. "When we arrived for a business working dinner, the staff was welcoming as was our server. Unfortunately, once our food arrived, our server seemed not to be present to our needs. After sitting with an empty wine glass, I had to ask another server for a second glass of wine and later the check. As for the food, the beet salad was excellent and the halibut good, but the brisket was dry and only about a quarter of it was thus, eaten. I've liked Birk's and taken people for business here many times with excellent food and service. I'm hoping this is just bump in the road."

"It is a good place to bring out of country business people with good steaks albeit a little overpriced. As usual however is the borderline rude service that seems to follow a formulaic attempt to upsell through sparkling, then appetizer plates, etc. just a feeling I developed over years of being waited on at Birks. The rudest part is the seemingly universal attitude their that the waiters always interrupt and talk over people when showing up, as if they are busier than you. Being a business dinner, sometimes this interrupts an important negotiation point. Just saying that the waiters need to learn their place , a place that almost all others know at other good restaurants: you work for the table, they don't cater to your schedule."

"Service made you feel special. Staff was attentive without being overbearing. We had onion rings for a starter that were light and not greasy. Salad was crisp with just the right amount of dressing without being soggy. My steak was done to perfection (med rare). Broccoli was bright green with the right amount of crunch. Baked potato done but not overdone. We had an assortment of desserts - creme brulee, cheesecake, fresh coconut ice, and a mocha fudge type cheesecake. Supurb - all of it. My date has eaten at Birks for years and he said this was without a doubt his best experience. (only my second time at Birks). The staff made the evening a delight."

"Our waiter was the worst I have experienced at Birk's or anywhere else. We arrived at 11:30 AM and we did not get our lunch until 12:35 PM. Others who came in later got served much earlier than us. I doubt if we will ever be back to Birk's."
