In the tradition of Italy's trattorias, the sight, sounds and aromas of authentic Italian cuisine are recreated fresh everyday at Il Fornaio. Literally "the baker" in Italian, Il Fornaio offers wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade and imported pastas; pizzas from a wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; antipasti and a wide variety of desserts made daily from scratch. The first two weeks of each month a special menu from a different region of Italy is featured as part of Festa Regionale.

"Made a reservation showed up on time and even though the restaurant portion of the restaurant was not crowded, they first sat us in the bar area. We asked to be reseated in the restaurant area and they did, but sat us right by the kitchen walk way. The food was fair. The waiter we had was very good, but the food and initial experience made this restaurant a one time visit."

"Our family of 8 celebrated two birthdays in real style with excellent food and service this past Sunday. My wife and I had been going to Il Fornaio for years and we brought the family for a special occasion. The restaurant and staff has never disappointed us. We love the variety and quality of the monthly Festa Regionale. Heartily recommend Il Fornaio if you want a quality dining experience!"

"The food was good, but the outdoor service was marginal. When I walked inside I noticed extremely attentive waiters at the tables inside along with the manager visiting the tables to check on everything. Sitting outside we didn't get any of this and waited a very long time to get wine refills."

"The food was good (this was my third visit). The noise level is an issue. We originally were to have a party of 8, but ended up w/six and the booth was so cramped that a chair had to be brought for one guest to sit in the aisle. Although it was noted on my Open Table reservation and confirmed with several employees...two days before by phone...at arrival and to the waitress...no one acknowledged that it was a 40th birthday celebration."

"I have been to better Italian restaurants than this and paid a bit less. The food itself was mediocre. I ordered a dish off the specials menu that was supposed to be a good mixture of seafood. What I found was a plate of spaghetti with mostly shrimp and not very much squid or scallops. I could have easily duplicated my dish with some capers, garlic, and olive oil. The restaurant itself was very noisy and not very intimate. I asked in my reservation for a booth off to the side, but instead received a table in the middle of a busy walkway. The service was spotty. Took about 10 minutes to get noticed after seated and it was only after I turned to my date to say something about the slow service. Not sure if I'd return."

"Really can't say much. First time I had been at Reston Town Center and at this restaurant. Overall it was very enjoyable and I would go back though wouldn't make a special trip out of it. Food was good however it did seem to take a little bit of time to put our dinner order in after the appetizers arrived. Didn't see much of the server but she was probably busy. Outdoor patio was nice. The ravioli dish I had was excellent!"

"I brought a group of 10 here for Mother's Day. When we arrived, we were shown to a table in the back room, not a normal dining room, and we were seated on folding chairs. Our drinks and salads came out reasonably quick and were fine. Then the wait staff seemed to get busy and we didn't see them as one by one our glasses emptied and nobody noticed. We waited a very long time for dinner to arrive, at least 40 minutes after our salads. Making a 9 year old wait that long for his pizza is never a good idea. When it arrived, it was very disappointing. Multiple platters were lukewarm and drying out, seeming to have been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. Others were just tasteless."

"The hostess was very pleasant and helpful on arrival; very good as an initial experience. Nothing in particular about the service was over the top, so it was about average. The waiter was courteous, knowledgeable and helpful, but not engaging; perhaps a result of the number of tables he was servicing. The food, as a whole, was good. The pasta dishes were great, but the grilled seafood dish was not of my liking. Since the appetizer and pasta dishes were very good, next time I'll try something other than the seafood.
The ambiance was great so, based on this experience, we will return again."

"Ingredients are fresh and unique, presented quite nicely and with very good service. Prices are reasonable for quality, selection and service provided. Was not particularly crazy about the menu selections as it contained many items I did not care for and not enough of some of the staples you might expect from an Italian restaurant. So from that perspective it is a different twist on Italian cuisine and that could be quite interesting and refreshing for those that are looking for something a little different from the usual fare."

"We went to this restaurant for the first time and are conflicted as to our experience. The food, service and staff were all very good. However, the noise level was very high and this really affected our dinning experience. There were seven of us seated at a table in the middle of the long dinning room. It was almost impossible to hear anyone talk without raising your voice and trying to communicate with anyone other than the person seated right next to you was really, really hard. It is a shame that this affected our experience so strongly as the food was well prepared and tasty, the presentation was good. Three of our party were children and they treated them well, a kids friendly menu and a little activity sheet for them to color."

"Second time at this restaurant. The food is very good - we had several salad openers. The salads are flavorful, but not too heavy with dressing or cheese. Nice balance.
Our group had a nice assortment of pastas for the main course. Ravioli was perfectly cooked and seasoned nicely. One entree was a calazone which was made in beautiful manner. Not so heavy on the dough, stacked on the inside with ham and just enough cheese and sauce to balance the ham. Easy to eat, not overwhelming like a calazone can be.
Service was good - because of the attention of all the wait staff. Our waiter seemed highly disinterested. We heard the waiter at the table next to us go over all the specials with energy. We had Mr. Zero Energy."

"This was the worse meal and service I have ever had...this place should not be in Reston Town Center and I don't think it will last there. We ordered the Shrimp Risotto and the Pomodoro Pasta and they were both TASTELESS. Our bill was $100 when it was said and done and we didn't even eat the meals. When we told the waiter that we didn't care for the Shrimp Risotto he basically ignored us. Service was horrible as well as the food."

"We have always enjoyed our meals and experience at Il Fornaio restaurants. We have dined at both the Del Mar and Reston locations. On Friday 26 April 2012 our experience at Il Fornaio was a disappointment. I believe the overall experience can be summarized below based on on two observations:
1) Our table was in the rear of the restaurant (Reston location) and just after we were seated the staff began to move tables and chairs. It appears that they were setting up that area of the restaurant for another activity. It made us feel like we were dining in the middle of factory, with chairs, tables, and staff assembling some product. Hardly the type of ambiance one is expecting.

"Good food, not so good ambience. Noisy, screaming children - who brings twins with a case of the terrible two's to somewhere like Il Fornaio at 8:00 p.m.?. Greeting staff need some more training, less cheek would be appreciated ("and will the other 32 members of your party be along shortly" - and I quote, see my comments below about a sports bar). Good service, up to expectation (but only just). This was my (late) birthday dinner, I'll probably look for somewhere else next year.
The restaurant has to make a decision - set some standards, no jeans/T's for starters, kids in a separate part so the noise doesn't affect other diners, less group tables etc. It's becoming another sports bar/eatery without the wide screens and prices."

"We go out for dinner at least once a week, but once a week, we chose a restaurant we have never been to. We both love Italian food and we were not disappointed. Everything was wonderful from the time we were seated until we left. We were given a gift from the waiter of a bag of white beans with recipes to use them three different ways! "My husband and I were excited to try Il Fornaio as we often walked past it during our visits to RTC. We got a sitter and picked a Saturday evening for what we thought would be a delicious Italian meal. Unfortunately the only item that can be praised for quality and taste was the bread and the olive oil/vinegar combo. We were highly disappointed with our salads (I ordered the beet and my husband ordered the spinach). Both were underwhelming. The dressing and seasoning were bland. I can fix a better salad at home.
I ordered the Pasta Bolognese. I have made a better bolognese dish using a recipe I found on Pinterest. My husband's entree was the sausage ravioli. I watched his face as he took his first bite and did not see a smile."

"Had a most wonderful vegetarian meal that was new on the menu called Mezzalune, soft half moon ravioli stuffed with pears and mozerrella, with an asparagus cream sauce, I went back twice in one week for it! SOOOOOOOOOO Good!
Made sure to let the Chef know that I was dually empressed. :)"

"Another brilliant evening of Italian regional cuisine (part of the 6-month long Feste Regionale) with superb wine pairings - this time, Toscano. Dragged my foodie sister and brother-in-law down from NJ, and they were fairly thoroughly blown away. I've commented here almost a half-dozen times in the past three months - suffice to say, I love this place (after having avoided it for five years because "it's a chain" - you'd never know that): the breads, the apps, the (absolutely best homemade) pastas, the carne and pesce, the regional wines we'd never heard of, the dolci, the superb service, Joel the manager, everything."

"It was a nice atmosphere and location. The server was very attentive and the food came out fast. The only problem was the food wasn't very good. The flavor and spices were odd or bland. I came with 6 members of my Italian family and none of us were impressed by the food. Even the seasonings in the oil bread dip were off. The Easter bunny coming to the table was an awesome touch though and my one year-old absolutely loved it. It was also her first birthday and she definitely enjoyed the bread and the pasta with butter."

"Sat in the bar while we waited for our table; bartenders were attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, it was almost 20 minutes after we were seated in the dining room before we saw our server! Luckily, my husband and I had our drinks from the bar; unfortunately, our dinner partners didn't. The food and overall experience were very good, nevertheless."
