"This was a nice little spot downtown - off the beaten path. The tables for two were a little to small and cramped. So, we ate at the bar and it was really great! The bartender was friendly and helpful with our choices."

"I've been to Current for lunch about 3 years ago and found it to be wonderful - like a small bistro. My husband and I decided to go for dinner. It is now more like a flashy sports bar with TV sets everywhere and so much noise we could not stand it - we sat on the outside sidewalk area for dinner. The street noise as pretty bad and it was cold - the heater above us was not working we were told. The food was good - not memorable.. We had a lovely beet salad and we both had Pork with brussel sprouts. Excellent sause , but the sprouts were way undercooked. This seems now to be a hangout for the 20 and under age group - so it has lost its appeal for us......"

"LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Currant! I want them to open one in SF! I make it a point to dine here every time I visit San Diego. The food and service is fabulous. To start, check out their daily popcorn (this time I believe it was pesto and pistachio, I normally love their truffled version) and don't miss their blue crab stuffed/and lightly battered avocado which is amazing (note it's a small portion but good to share if you want to get multiple items). The salmon salad is always my favorite go-to, it's cooked perfectly."

"Dined pre-Opera. We were 15 minutes late due to traffic, but Currant had saved our table and made sure we were on time. Stuffed chicken breast and pork loin was excellent. Very upbeat, casual atmosphere. We will definitely dine there again!"

"We've been to Currant several times and never been disappointed. It seems the food gets better each time we come. We each tried one of their new cocktails. I had a Le Roi, which was light and not too sweet. My husband had the gimlet which was light and refreshing, with hints of basil and cucumber. Both were nice ideas for warm weather cocktails. My onion soup was not watery or bland, but rich and complex (in addition to comforting) and the sea bass was cooked perfectly. My husband had the candied leek and goat cheese salad, which he loved, and his pork loin was moist and cooked just right, too. The desserts were also delicious."

"We were taking a spring break trip over the Easter weekend, so we made reservations at the Currant for Easter brunch. It's not a typical buffet brunch, rather you order individual meals from the menu. We were the second to arrive at the 9am opening time, but when we asked for a specific table, the girl was reluctant saying that "we have a lot of reservations today". Uh, so do we. She checked with her manager and this was quickly resolved. We ordered but the food took much longer for our table than many others that arrived after us. We were a group of 3 with standard menu items, so something happened in the kitchen. Our waitress, the same person who sat us, didn't check on us this whole time and never acknowledged the delay."

"The food was terrific! Excellent ambience too, and not too big. I had salmon with risotto, my wife & mother-in-law had the steak, we also had salad & soup, and chocolate mousse and ice cream for dessert. Everything was great except the service, which takes them down two notches. Very slow in taking our order, our waitress seemed to have forgotten about us. Then for dessert, that took a very long time to bring out. She brought out my coffee lickety split but it was cold by the time dessert came out so I asked for more. Also, it shouldn't take 15 minutes for dessert because the server usually should do that. Atmosphere was very nice, very cool, well decorated. Maybe service was one-off for us, maybe you'll have better luck"

"I loved the Absinthe Minded Friday special! It was a fun unique way to spend a late evening downtown. Our reservation was honored without any issue. We had a wonderful server who explained the drink and procedures...the food was great and I tell all my friends I can't wait to go back again and try more food and drinks! Totally fun and different!"

"Great french bistro food and fabulous cocktails. Energetic and cozy setting. Good for couples or small groups. May be too noisy for parties larger than 6."

"I had the French Onion Soup which was delicious, the perfect combination of sweet onions and chewy, crunchy cheese. I followed that with the steak and roasted romaine salad, an irresistible mix of crunchy, savory lettuce, steak cooked as ordered, with a memorable dressing. There were two large parties dining at the same time, but the busy staff still managed to check on me frequently, keeping my water glass full, and making sure everything was satisfactory."

"The food was good not great. Our table ordered Mussels, Gnocchi and Scallops. The Mussels were the best dish. The Gnocchi was a seared version, not what I expected and not a better alternative to the traditional. It was tasty though - no need to sear/fry. Scallops were tasty but the bacon wrap wasn't cooked enough and so wilted and discarded on the side of the plate.
The food took long enough that we had to ask if it was coming (maybe 25 minutes). The kitchen was "a little backed up" - no compensation offered.
Don't think I would go back - there are so many places to eat in San Diego. It was Good but nothing special."

"The service this evening was great as usual but the food was not! I was so disappointed because every time I have been here (~6 times) it has been great. The Mac & Cheese was not thick and creamy, it felt watered down. The gnocchi had the same watery texture which was not good either. My wedge salad had so much excess liquid it was more like a soup with lettuce in it than the crispy salad I so enjoy. Every restaurant has an 'off' night and perhaps this was theirs! Will give them another try but if it is not good again I will be moving on to another venue for my pre-opera dinners!"

"We love going to Currant. The curry version of the mussels is outstanding as is the gnocchi. I tasted the pork and it was amazingly tender and moist. Hard to do with pork."

"A small dining room with just a few servers who have a lot to do, so they seem a little overwhelmed. The food was good, but not great. Not a bad place for a light dinner."

"The service was outstanding. We were greeted so pleasanltly upon arrival and shown toour table that was waiting for us (We had made online reservations which was very easy and helpful as we were from out of town. Well actually from Canada ). Dice we were a bit pressed for time, We asked the server for Her recommendations for a quicker meal she was very very accommodating and helpful. The steak frites it was done perfectly and the croque monsieur as well. She arranged for a quicker dessert of profiteroles was waiting for us as soon as we were finished with our entree . A bit more chocolate sauce and raspberry coulis would be my recommendation. We don't usually rush a meal as this however we were attending the opera and were a bit late."

"Everything was as expected. Looked nice inside. The waiter was extremely helpful and courteous. The food was solid.
The only downside, in my opinion, is that the restaurant is connected to the hotel. Brings the nostalgic of the restaurant down a little, but otherwise a solid choice."

"Excellent food, great service, and skillfully mixed cocktails, at non extortionate prices. I'll be coming back! Expect European style service, the wait staff are extremely helpful, but not constantly hovering over the table asking if everything is ok."

"We are on vacation and I read good reviews about Currant so I made a reservation. We were seated in a semi-private room with a sheer curtain next to the window. The restaurant was loud but this cut out some of the noise. Service was excellent and so was the food. Servers were very friendly and helpful. We will make this a regular place to eat on our visits to San Diego."

"the food was tasty. The air the feel of the place was blah... the busboy could hardly speak english and although i had a reservation i was treated as though "i just walked in off the street and what do u want", worse when i said i made a reservation with open table, the server acted like "oh " just put them anywhere to the the busboy.! he starts to seat us by the kitchen door ! I said no no that table i specified not near the kitchen. the server looks at me with a cranky face and proceeds to seat me in the middle of the room next to a bar and in the walkway of anyone who walks in the restaurant. i said no thats right in a walkway. i point to a sofa in another area, he seemed upset seating us there. i didnt feel welcomed at all."

"The food and service is excellent! The only negative comment I have (which isn't Currant's fault) is that it can get really loud when the Fire Trucks drive by with their sirens on (happened 3 times during our dinner). So, keep that in mind if you're looking for a quiet place : )"

"Second time at Currant. Last time was absinthe quest, this time was restaurant week. Each item was very well prepared. And the accommodation for a food issue was super. Tuna seared and tartar to start, sea bass entree, mousse to finish. The starter and entree made some nice riffs on standards. The mousse was fairly traditional but the grand marinier did not overpower and the dish was a nice way to end the meal."
