"The entrees sounded delicious but this being our first time here we opted for having several small plates.
No dissapointments - creative use of local products (local - YEAH!), great flavors, beer samplers, and a pleasant staff made this an absolute winner.

Food here was made with love and it showed. :-D"

"It was the best dining experience we have had since we ate at a four-star gourmet restaurant in Las Vegas several years ago but in a more relaxed atmosphere. I ordered the IPA and my wife the Stout - both were quite good. For appetizers we had the Braunsweiger - just excellent and made in-house, the Ramps covered with a Duck's egg - also very good, and I ordered the Opah Cheek - also quite good. My wife ordered the Flat Iron steak (medium rare) for her entrée - it was fantastic! I ordered the Cobia - it was quite good, but I wished I had ordered the Elk steak. Dessert was the Chocolate Pot Cake - it was awesome. I also ordered a glass of the Muscat wine - the first time I've seen this on a wine menu in over twenty years - it was great!"

"We brought a friend visiting from Boston to Hinterland who had wanted to experience what Milwaukee had to offer in terms of locally brewed beers. We wanted to accompany the beer tasting with a great atmosphere and excellent food. Hinterland hit the mark on all levels!"

"I brought my family here for my son's college graduation celebration. Our server made the evening very special and the food was fantastic. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes excellent food in an interesting setting. Although we don't live in the Milwaukee area, we will plan to be back whenever possible."

"I liked the decor and ambience --- use of birch branches with the brick and wood beams. Good food and very accommodating for sharing plates and tasting an array of foods. Everything except the Korean short ribs were great. The flavor was great, but they were very rare and tough. The meat should easily have come off the bone ( I sent them back w/no improvement). Good service! Music was a little to loud for comfortable conversation; good jazz would add to the ambience."

"We went to Hinterland because my husband had been there previously and said the food was always very good. Unfortunately, for me, it must have been an off night, a very off night. The service was very slow. The food was nothing special. Both of our steaks were not cooked as we had requested and poorly plated. The food was not exciting, something we could have had anywhere. There are so many good restaurants in downtown Milwaukee. I don't think I'll waste another evening on Hinterland."

"We were in Milwaukee for one evening, and had selected two possible dining options. At our hotel, we mentioned this and everybody said that while Rumpus Room was great, Hinterland was more unique. We decided to give it a try and had one of the better meals we've ever had. We arrived early to have a cocktail at the bar (would have happily hung out here - the bartenders were great!), then moved into the dining room. The menu changes almost nightly from what I understand, and the hardest part of the menu was to not order everything. We ended up with halibut cheeks, veal heart oscar, antelope, and duck testes (how can you not order them if they're there?!?) - everything was outstanding, as was the dessert! We would definitely go back!"

"I liked the Elk. It was a good piece of meat. The portion was small and essentially ala carte. The root veggies were not done. That was actually surprising based on the small size. The bread was good as was my appetizer. We got the last duck, so the server did the best she could and alerted us to reserve it. Thanks!
I think the item that rivaled the elk was the meat butter. Excellent."

"This restaurant is a real gem! Incredible, innovative menu, however still offering some traditional entrees for the less adventurous. The atmosphere is great. The staff are amazing. "My wife and I were first time diners at Hinterland. It was recommended by someone else, but we were not sure about the menu. It's different. Took a chance, and we were glad we did. Our server was excellent. He was knowledgable about the menu and offered helpful suggestions. He brought us drinks and then didn't bother us until we were ready to order. We ordered appetizers and our server told us to take our time on the entree. It was a totally relaxed atmosphere. The food was delicious. We tried some new fare and were pleased with the taste and presentation. The portions were just right. Not gourmet small and not cafeteria-type, huge portions that one cannot finish. We were pleasantly surprised. We will definitely return."

"Three of us had a business dinner and this is a great place. Hinterland has a diverse menu and really terrific food. Sarah was a great server and responsive to our needs. Don't miss their beer selection either because they have their own microbrews on tap. I've been here three times with a variety of people and we've always come away happy and full."

"We have been there a few times before. In the past the waiters have been extremely knowledgable and the chefs have been wonderful accommodating to my vegetarian needs. We did not have the same luck this time. The waiter took a long time to come over to us and had to go back into the kitchen 4 times to see what they could do for a vegetarian entree. He came back out finally and told us that they could only do something that had the same prep stuff as the fish. I asked if they could do a pasta or risotto and I was told no because they were running low on stuff and were saving it for other people. We were very taken aback by this...We are a paying customer, not sure why it was so challenging to make a vegetarian entree?? Not going back."

"Hinterland was great like it always is. Open Table on the other hand, was useless. I made my original reservation using this tool, which it seemed would be easy to use, but when I needed to alter the number in my party, it became impossible to use the links and options. User hostile, I would call it. The first time I tried the link, it never loaded. THe second time (later in the day), the page opened and I changed the number in my party but there was no way to submit or update or enter or actually SEND the change. Dumb app."

"I was very impressed with the Hinterland. I don't visit very many upscale restaurants, but this one was well worth the extra price tag. My wife and I shared the Kale for an appetizer and it was surprisingly tasty (this is kale we're talking about it). For the entree I had the most delicious and tender hanger steak with vegetables I've ever had. The taste was quite earthy and smoke like, but full of flavor. My wife had fish which she enjoyed as well. Our bill after the tip was right around $100."

"A group of 5 of us went for dinner on Saturday night. The lighting was low, but not too dark and the level of conversation was moderate, providing a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Between the 5 of us, we tried scallop with octopus, pork cheek, and kielbasa for starters - all were beautifully presented and wonderfully flavorful. For our entrees, we tried the pork chop, hanger steak, elk steak, and cobia. Each dish was perfectly prepared and delicious. We were too full to try dessert, although the chocolate pecan pie sounded amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant and plan to return soon - it was a fantastic dining experience."

"The menu was severely limited; there were only 6 or 7 choices for entrees. I had a veal chop, and my wife had a hanger steak. Both meals were well prepared and tasted very good, but based on the price, I would have expected at least some bread or a side salad. We were also disappointed that the menu specified "no substitutions" on their entrees, and we felt that if we are paying between $24 and $42 for dinner that should have afforded some flexibility."

"Have been wanting to try Hinterland for ages but as our dining plans are usually last minute arrangements I've been unable to get a table without booking further ahead. Finally organised a table for last weekend but due to my husbands plane being delayed we didn't sit down until 9pm. This in itself didn't bother us except that by then they had unfortunately run out of my first choice for both main and dessert. My second choice was good but not what I had really wanted so that was a little disappointing. Will definitely go back as the ambiance is very pleasant, service personal and just attentive enough, as you would expect at a better restaurant and if I can get my first choice of meal I'm sure it will not disappoint."

"The atmosphere is perhaps well described as "rustic formal"; it's quite unique, and we liked it. The service, cocktails, and appetizers were great. The entrees, however, were another story. We had the trout, which was rather boring, and the halibut, which, while decent, was not even nearly worth the cost. I would recommend Hinterland for appetizers and cocktails, but I would be hesitant to recommend it for dinner."

"The food was very good, as always. The service, however, has seen a significant drop. Customers feel rushed and ignored...we were a party of 6 and on more than one occasion the staff bolted from the table before everyone was able to ask their questions or get their requests in...coffee at dessert time, for example."

"Food was great! We especially loved the gnocchi, brussels sprouts and the salad with potatoes... don't remember the name of it but it was DELICIOUS! Our waiter Jim was excellent! I was with a group of girlfriends and he gave us all separate checks without us having to ask..complete with dividing the price of the appetizers between us... and not including my friend who is a vegetarian in the ones that had meat! The only disappointment was that there was only one chocolate torte left. It was out of this world... and all 6 of us were left to fight over it!"

"We had a great dinner on a Friday night and great service from waiter Brian. They change their menu every day so we were surprised it would fit our particular dietary quirks so well, but they did. We were driving back from Chicago Saturday night around late- suppertime so we stopped again to see what was on the menu and were surprised with a new tasty salid and gyro plate. They do great things with lamb! Service with Russell on Saturday was awesome too. Can't wait to stop again!"

"Our evening at Hinterland was lovely from start to finish. We arrived in time for a drink at the bar. We sat in comfortable chairs in a cozy space. The bartender was wonderfully attentive and charming... There is an extensive beer and wine list, specialty cocktails at several price points. Visually the restaurant is beautiful. This was our 2nd visit to the restaurant and it was equally fantastic. This is a lively restaurant with excellent service and delicious food. There are multiple options for your dining pleasure but the menu is not overwhelming. Everything was delicious.... including the coffee and desserts at the end of our meal."
