Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. "Toloache was a truly nice surprise! We made a reservation, which is a must - and were seated immediately. The food was delicious and the server was attentive but not hovering. Very busy and bustling but in a nice, NYC way. We even had a celebrity sighting!"

"Our first visit in 2012 was after theatre. The food was so good we just had to go back for dinner.
Just did so last Sunday. A very busy and upbeat place and the food is still very yummy.
Beware though of the spicy guacamole if your tummy is a little sensitive to high heat.
Try the regular instead.

"The cocktails and food at Toloache were knockouts. I had a passion fruit and tequilla based cocktail that was sweet, sour and powerful. I almost couldn't stand up. The guacomole with fruit, our appetizer, was perfect. My main course was excellent, black cod in a sweet and smoky/spicy corn sauce. The side dish of brussel sprouts was bursting with flavor. My only issue was the noise level. You had to talk quite loud to be heard. The staff knew we were going to a Broadway show and took orders and brought out food promptly. Altogether it was a great start to a great evening."

"The first time we ate at Toloache Midtown it was perfect - we miraculously got a walk-in table and enjoyed margaritas and ceviche and guacamole samplers. This time we had a reservation. The food was excellent once again - that's why we came, that's why we'll return. However, I'll make a point of trying to sit downstairs when we return because the upstairs was too cramped and too loud."

"We had a table booked but our arrival seemed to be unexpected, the service was rushed and our leisurely meal for our last night in New York found us back on the street in just over 1 hour. We never felt settled and it was a disappointing experience, the food was good although the enchilada was small and therefore expensive for the portion size."

"The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was wonderful. I've been to this restaurant many times for the quality of the food but the service has been consistently poor. This latest time I went, the waiter took the credit from the table without giving us the check first. The credit card was not out on the table, it was between my dinner companion's folder arms and body. The waiter had to swoop his arm near my dinner companion's face to get the card. He was brisk and did not ask us how the food was during the meal. He also gave us the wrong guacamole and when I pointed it out to him, he made it seem like it was my fault. Good food. Bad Service."

"Had a lovely mother's day dinner here. Finding a good Mexican restuarant that has an authentic taste is very hard to find in the city. Toloache takes everyday Mexican food and elevates it to a high class menu. They refine classics, recreating them yet maintaining their essence. I love everything on this menu and will be eating there again! Oh and the margaritas are delicious!"

"This is by far the best Mexican restaurant in NY. Food is consistently amazing (don't go if you expect "TexMex and heavy burritos"), service is always wonderful and the managers work the room like you are visiting their own home! i have taken clients, co-workers (one of my bosses!), family and friends and they all continue to rave about how good it is! a true dining experience, a wonderful night out (or lunch or brunch!)"

"You must AT LEAST order the rojo guacamole (it's the spicy one, but it's not too spicy). If you have a party of at least 4 people, order the trio of guac (three different varieties). At $21, it might sound pricey for an appetizer, but it is so worth it. I say at least 4 people because if you have fewer, you will all fill up on the guacamole and won't have any room for your meal. And sit on the ground level so you can watch the ladies making the guac from scratch. (People think it's great when they pull the cart up to your table at Rosa Mexicano to mash the avocados right in front of you, but that's over priced and this guac is better.)
After that, my go-to is the fish tacos. They are the best I've had in the Northeast."

"I enjoyed the food, albeit small portions. The place was hopping and atmosphere very festive as it was Cinco de Mayo and crowded.

"It was so packed with people that there was no place to put any personal items. Tables were very close, too, but luckily the staff is talented at gliding between chairs and handling all groups. The food was high-end and came out very quickly. If it weren't so loud in this place, I would definitely go back again, so if yelling across a table doesn't bother you, I highly recommend the food and service!"

"Went for dinner on may 5 th and the food was amazing. Probably the best Mexican I've had to date. Steak tacos and lobster tacos were wonderful. Especially the steak. The spicy guac was so good and the short ribs were as tender and flavorful as you can get. Even the quinoa was awesome. Service was a little slow but it was a holiday. The waitress was so nice"

"Went here for my birthday. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. It was a very busy Friday night right before Cinco de Mayo and they were still very attentive. The portions are on the small side, but it was enough food--and the dishes were unique and very tasteful. It is a bit tight to sit downstairs, but I'd def go again. We got there at 6:30 and they could easily get us out by an 8 pm show."

"This is my favorite NY restaurant hands down!!! It's always packed (ususally with the theather crowd) and you have to reserve in advance to get in but ...the food and service is amazing! And they margaritas and wine list are great too. They never ever have an "off" night. 5 stars!!"

"Diverse selection of food, secret vegetarian menu, and an AMAZING list of margaritas! Service was very attentive and social and seats were not crowded, as some reviews suggested. We sat downstairs and had a great time but I saw several regulars ask to be switched to upstairs."

"great mexican restaurant! service was great, and the food was too, although as other diners have written, the portions were very small. The guacamole was excellent, and at my table we had the paella, the shrimp quesadilla, and the enchiladas. We ordered side order of rice and black beans - 2 - and 1 would have been plenty - that is the one thing that was plentiful. Really good 'skinny' margarita."

"Close to a "5" but a few points off for portion sizes (a tad small) and noise level (we were seated next to the kitchen and guacamole preparation area). We made an early pre-theatre reservation and had plenty of time to savor a bottle of wine, our meal, coffee and dessert. Food is excellent and nicely presented; really appreciate that there are numerous vegetarian options. Highly recommend the Spicy Guacamole; (could have made a meal of that alone) and the dessert sampler. Nice, reasonably priced wine list. Great to find a quality, interesting Mexican choice in the theatre district; location can't be beat. Great waiter; treated us to post-coffee tequila that was unique and delicious. Will definitely return and highly recommend!"

"We arrived early, IT was packed and we decided not to wait for our table and sat at the bar instead. The vibe was fun, seating is tight.
Mango Mojito – delicious, Sangria- Fresh fruit was added to red wine and fruit juice. We shared Apps and the Paella for dinner.Chips with fresh guacamole-very good
JM Hamachi -Yellowtail, meyer lemon, cucumber, huichol salsa, crispy avocado – fantastic
De Lechon -Suckling pig carnitas, cactus salad, salsa verde - (2) small taco shells stuffed with the perfect combination of crunchy pork skin and moist pork meat. Next time I will get the dinner portion it was so amazing.
Tumbada paella- epazote-scented rice, chicken, chorizo, shrimp, tilapia, clams, octopus. Very fresh and the rice favorful. So Good!"
