La Pulperia
La Pulperia, a restaurant featuring rustic Latin cuisine from Chef/Owner Carlos Barroz and Victor Medina, opened on Monday, February 11 on Restaurant Row, at 371 W. 46th Street. Named for the general stores found throughout South America, La Pulperia offers Barroz’s simple yet refined food from the countries of Latin America, with European influences from places like Italy and Spain.
La Pulperia, designed by Andres Gomez (Red Rooster, Whitehall, SoCo) mirrors the authentic pulperias of South America, with handcrafted floor tiles from Mexico, reclaimed wood from Brazil on the ceiling and walls, and abundant shelving displaying top shelf liquor, fresh produce, and wine. Eventually the restaurant will sell packaged foods, like its namesake. It seats 60 (including a long burgundy banquette along one wall and a large communal table in the center of the dining room). Gomez’s handmade brass lamps with Edison bulbs hang over several of the tables.

"La Pulperia offers original South American cooking with some dishes I have not seen in other restaurants -even in NYC. The drink specials were delicious, with some unique combinations. i had Fish Ribs-yes, they were the size of a short rib but were actually from a fish. Very different and interesting tasting. Our server told us the dish was from the Brazil and Argentina area. The service at the front end, the bar and at our table was super friendly and helpful explain the different options and they were great at getting us out in time for the 8PM curtain time."

"We loved la pulperia .we started w the quest fundo which was amazing ,for dinner we both had the Pacu fish ribs a must. Xavier was our waiter & he was wonderful! We also got to meet Victor who runs the rest. We had gone for our anniversary and had a fantastic dinner thank you!"

"We dined with friends and toasted our two husbands with delicious sangria. Our servers were extremely helpful in explaining the menu choices and when deciding about the different desserts, they strongly insisted we order the tres leches cake, their favorite. We were surprised to see a candle in our cake accompanied with a round of "happy birthday." No one had reminded them that we were celebrating a birthday with dinner and a show, they proudly told us that they remembered our toast.
We were treated well, enjoyed our dinner choices, and will bring more friends to introduce them to a delightful dining experience."

"The space is pleasant and unassuming, warm and inviting. It's the food and personalities of the staff and owner that really won our hearts. Each dish was excellent; fresh and flavorful. They were many items that sounded interesting but we settled on the fish ribs( did not disappoint) and short ribs. The short Rib was very good but did seem slightly mainstream in comparison to the other things we loved on the menu. They clearly take pride in the food which was complex yet subtle. Each dish was full of sublime flavor, perfectly balanced. I would definately return and very highly recommend this casual and atmospheric place to foodie friends! Thanks guys!"

"Such a sweet spot. The staff couldn't do enough for us. We had the Beef empanadas, mixed ceviche, lobster tacos and the sangria short ribs. The short ribs are a must have!!!! Ceviche and empanadas were delicious. The lobster tacos were bland as were the little dulce de leche cookies- not worth the calories. I will definatly come back and try other things. Such an amazing mix if flavours and charming ambience!!!"

"Delicious food and inventive cocktails. Highly recommend their signature spicy cocktail (can't remember the name). Their beef empanadas and Ceviche Mixto was perfectly seasoned. Everyone seemed to rave about their Fish Ribs, but I thought their other food had more flavor. The Scallop Ceviche was good, but not my favorite."

"First time here and will definitely return. Was looking for something different for pre-theater lunch and so happy to have found this place. Charming ambiance, attentive service. Javier was adorable. Ordered many dishes. Loved the lobster taquitos. The pineapple added a fresh zestiness.The humitas were terrific. I've generally found short ribs to be very salty. These were perfect!The potato tortilla with cheese was equally delicious.Guac was good.My friend said her margarita was the best she's ever had.Will definitely try some of the other drinks on m y next visit.The only slight negative is the noise level.The restaurant is quite small and the noise can make it tough to have a conversation.Do not let that stop you from going and enjoying!!"

"There used to be a lovely Chilean restaurant at this location, and we went to La Pulperia hoping it would be a new version but with a broader menu, since it bills itself as Latin American. We were there at noon on a Sunday, and were restricted to a brunch menu. Though three of us enjoyed the food, the waiter forgot to bring out appetizers, then slapped them down with the meal. The noise level was quite high. To be fair, there was a table of about 12 right near us, but there was also music with the volume pumped up too high.
This is an area, and a street (Restaurant Row) where there are too many other excellent options for us to consider going back to La Pulperia."

"The food at La Pulperia was fantastic--too bad by the time it came we were already fed up with the poor service. Perhaps from the Cinco de Mayo crowd, it took forever to even place a drink order, and then our waiter would disappear for another 20 minutes before bringing our drinks. Our food was the same story. Fish ribs were fantastic, and the ceviche lip-smacking good. The salmon brulee was a completely new experience. A shame, as we will probably not be back again."

The menu is tiny and there are no specials, so read it very well before venturing there because there will not be anything else for you to select from.

"Lovely and cozy restaurant in the NYC theater district. Having given an inordinate amount of attention to their cocktail menu, it does NOT disappoint. If you like spicy drinks, be sure to try the El Chilango. It was fantastic!
The men in our party raved on about their meal selection, the pappardelle. My friend and I elected to choose a few appetizers and share -- both the traditional guacamole and the salmon brulee (one of two chef specialties) were fresh, yet each displayed a very complex set of flavors. However, the pièce de résistance and the second of the chef specialties, was the taquitos de langosta. We enjoyed them so much we put in for a second order so that our husbands could try them."

"The restaurant was so dark that it was difficult to see our food. A candle on the table would have helped. So much of the enjoyment of food is the presentation and we missed that. The food was delicious and different. The corn arepja was fabulous. Pacu ribs were delicious. The wait staff was attentive but we had three different waiters and they had trouble remembering our orders - for three people. Really good food but until the lighting improved, I wouldn't go back."

"Looking for a quick place to grab some delicious food before or after the theater? LaPulperia fills the need. Just having opened within the last couple months, there are a few details to be ironed out - like a sign out front, but don't let that stop you. The food is really good. We started with (and shared) an excellent cerviche mixto and a delicious braised short rib tamale. We then shared the mixed grill with truffle fries. This place has a comfortable feel to it. Great from start to finish."

"The food from appetizer through dessert was fabulous. Service very friendly and prompt. We were there early and going to a show - everything was paced nicely. It is dark and the dining area is limited so tables are fairly close to each other."

"We went back to La Pulperia for the second time in 2 weeks because we had such an awesome introduction the first time. The second tastings were even more amazing. We definitely have to go through the entire menu. The chocolate ball for dessert is straight from heaven. AND, these are the most welcoming people you will find anywhere. The service is impeccable."

"Actually we were quite disappointed with this restaurant. Appetizer we shared (humitas) was very small and rather salty - nothing close to the wonderful humitas we had in Quito, Equador a few years ago. My husband ordered a mixed meat platter - plenty to eat but more like bits and pieces - he would have liked a skirt steak alone but was told they didn't serve it that way - fries were heavy, small salad nothing to rave about. I had "fish ribs" only because it sounded so novel - little meat of some kind of white fish that was rather fatty.

"My friends and I are definitely coming back to try the other dishes on the menu. We ordered TAQUITOS DE LANGOSTA, SALMON BRULEE, SEAFOOD TOWER -- we savored and eaten every morsel and were very sated! I loved my drink PATILLA ARDIENTE (I had two!) I am salivating as I'm writing this I can't wait to go back."

"The service was outstanding, from the front door to the table. Friendly staff, attentive wait staff. Had the salmon brulee and humitas to start, after a treat of a margarita made with pineapple and spicy salted rim. Lobster and homemade fettuccini, all nicely seasoned, esfers de chocolate, chocolate dome filled with ice cream, strange but yummy taste in the chocolate, with a hot chocolate sauce, and cappuccino. Good luck to the owners! Hope to see you next time we are in NYC."

"Food just ok. Owner brought our table a round of drinks to try we didn't order, plus some desserts and then charged us for them. My husband and his friends were obviously upset about this. We didn't think it was nice. Seems they are running a bit of a scam. Food just ok. Nothing to go out of your way for."

"La Pulperia is an incredible new dining experience. The Argentinian chef has created the most exciting new dishes we have ever had the opportunity to sample. We loved every second of our time there and cannot wait to return. We have been telling all of our friends that they must go!
