The Source
The Source is the first fine dining restaurant in the nation’s capital headlined by Master Chef Wolfgang Puck. Designed by EDG, the three-level restaurant is the signature dining experience at the Newseum, an interactive museum of news. The Source offers two distinct dining experiences as well as a private room located on the lower level that seats up to 40 guests. The ground floor bar and lounge where guests enter offers approachable dining in a casual setting and features a traditional Japanese Izakaya menu offering sushi, sashimi, noodle dishes and authentic "Robata" grilled dishes. Upstairs, guests can enjoy a menu that features Puck’s modern take on Asian cuisine. The Source is the recipient of many awards and accolades including #3 ranking on Washingtonian Magazine's "Top 100 Restaurants" list, "2008 New Restaurant of the Year" Award and "2008 Restaurant of the Year" from DC Magazine plus has received three stars from Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema.

"The restaurant never disappoints. This was our third brunch experience at the Source. I am not a big advocate that the kitchen spews out your orders randomly. Each dish however was well done and consistently great! Service was inconsistent and could use more

"This restaurant is located next to the Newseum, but don't mistake it for a museum cafe. This is an upscale place - everyone that came in was in a suit. The food was superb and the perfect amount! I love how the Power Lunch comes with cookies - they were the BEST chocolate chip cookies I ever had!"

"Traditionally have had good experiences at Puck's restaurants. This was the exception . Food mediocre except the duck which was good. Service was ordinary at best. Thought very overpriced for the quality of cuisine and service. Am very happy to pay for good food but this was a major disappointment on every level. Too many wonderful restaurants in this city to waste your time here."

"As a semi-frequent visitor to the Source downstairs bar after a movie, I keep the upstairs in reserve for special occasions. Celebrating our anniversary there on a Monday night was one of those special visits. Everything we had was delicious and attractively presented. I shall return!"

"I've been to the Source several times and the quality of food is always good. An excellent asian themed menu, with the twists in preparation and plating that you would expect from a Wolfgang Puck restaurant.My recommendations for main course would be either the duck curry or drunken noodles with shrimp.
While the prices are not outrageous, they are a bit on the high side. The one course I cringe most at the prices is dessert. My group shared the plate of chocolate chip cookies with coffee and the cookies alone were $12.
Still I would definitely recommend this restaurant"

"High quality, innovative Asian fusion cuisine. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings and were not disappointed by chef's creativity. But the experience needs fine tuning. Dumpling course was terrific but some were cold, others over salted. Spicy tuna tartar in miso crisp cone was tasty and fresh but the cone's sweetness was cloying & marred the flavor balance. Under-seasoning an issue sometimes. Service was friendly and attentive but pacing was an issue. We needed more time to enjoy cocktails before first course! We sometimes felt rushed with course delivery. Often we had to wait for the wine pairing to show up with the dish. Finally, could we do away with having the runners describe each dish? Waiter has far more knowledge on food."

"Saturday limited brunch menu. The chicken salad was very dissappointing - flavorless. I actually asked if they forgot the dressing. Out of desperation I poured a dipping sauce from one of the other dishes on it to give it some flavor. Bland chicken with chopped iceburg lettuce can be very dull. In retrospect, we were lucky to be forced to a tasting menu. I would normally have ordered a lunch salad which would have been a huge disappointment. The Twisted Tiffany mimosa was both unique and delicious. Our server mentioned it was his favorite."

"My experience with the Dim Sum Brunch is consistent with other positive reviews. The food was quite delicious, presented well, but nothing over the top. Service was good. My friends and I were a bit under dressed compared to others in the restaurant, but the atmosphere was light and casual for brunch.
Surprisingly, the dishes that my group selected on our second round ended up being some of the best. Moral of the story: don't be afraid to order the Chinese Sausage Fried Rice or Turnip Cakes. Everything was great, but those were the surprising standouts for us.
$115 was enough to fill three bellies and get a couple drinks. Great deal for the quality."

"The bar is nice, especially with the happy hour appetizer specials, but we were disappointed with our dining experience. "Went here for corporate lunch and food was as good as I remembered. I tried their lobster bao bun and nearly lost my mind! The flavor was delish and the bread SO yummy. I'm going back as soon as I can to order that again. Had a little issue with my food coming out with the rest of the table but they comped me for it as an apology which was great. Also had the crab fried rice which had large, tender chunks of crab and again, great flavor. Finished off my lunch with their carrot cake which tastes as good as it looks. The environment of this restaurant is very sexy and slick. Lots of glass and ivory...very lovely in the evening. They have a glass wine cellar that is also visually pleasing. Love this place!"

"My husband and I go to The Source all the time for brunch but this was by far the worst visit yet!!! I've never really get good service at the source so we never expect that. But we always expect the food to out shine the service. I'm not sure if yhe kitchen was short staff or what..but we were at the source fot 3 hours for brunch. We had a table of two that sat right behind us. They came hour after we arrived and the got alll there brunch plates within 45min while were still on our 3rd plate. We waited 20 min for every plate. Then we realized that the girl at the other table works there..so maybe i need to get a job there so I can get better service or faster service... I work in the food industry for 15years..step your game up!!!"

"If I could give 3 1/4, I would. We had a reservation for 4 and my spouse and I arrived approximately 35 minutes early, so we sat in the seating area around the bar. At that time, around 8:10, there was ample seating at both the bar and lounge areas. It took a server over 15 minutes to approach us and take our order (simple--glass of wine and draft beer) and an ADDITIONAL 15 minutes to deliver. We saw other tables in the lounge area arrive, order and receive their order before us.
Our other party arrived and it took a further 15 minutes to pay the bill. We asked for it to be transferred, but were informed that was not the "preferred" way.
The food was just average, but we received great service. Not the "bang" for the buck!"

"We had terrible service at the Source. Although the food was its usual high quality, I couldn't enjoy it because I was so upset about the poor service. We had to wait an hour seated at our table before we were served any food. The restaurant was not particularly crowded -- it was a Wednesday night. After about 40 minutes, when I couldn't find our server, I politely notified the hostess that we had been waiting for a long time and inquired whether there was a problem. She said she would look into what was holding up our orders. After about another 15-20 minutes our food finally arrived, but no explanation or apology was extended. I was extremely disappointed after having had many good experiences at the Source."

"I had the dim sum brunch at Source a couple of months ago and it was excellent so I quickly approved when a friend suggested we try it for lunch. Oh my....someone must have been having an off day. The starter of spicy tuna tartar presented in "sesame cones" was the highlight of my meal. Then I must have ordered the wrong thing from the Entree Salads...I got lots of wilted, old lettuce, lots of peanuts and some beat up, dried out from overcooking, and fairly flavorless shrimp. I picked through the sorry mess and left most of it. Desserts were uninspiring so we had decent cappuccinos and called it a day. It felt like the C team was in the kitchen. Very bummed especially having had a good experience."

"My food was good. But for the price (and the name affiliation), I expected great. They were out of a few drink items we wanted to order, but the waitress made some acceptable recommendations for alternatives. Certain menu items can only be ordered downstairs, not upstairs in the dining room. The waitress was very helpful in describing menu items to help us make dinner choices, and was very patient in allowing us lots of time to decide. My friend ordered a side of the noodles with braised short ribs - no one at the table could eat it.
Conveniently located within walking distance of a stay open late parking garage and the Verizon Center.
The bill was $250 for 4 people, without wine. I'm not sure that we would choose to eat here again."

"Friendly service, but too rushed. Our appetizers arrived long before the wine we'd ordered at the same time :( The food wasn't as "WOW" as we expected, given the lofty prices. The few pieces of garlic-glazed pork got lost in a mound of ramen-style noodles, for example. Appetizers were the best part of the meal (dumplings were great).

"It's true, the view is awful. But the location is good - next to the Newseum and adjacent to The Mall. The dining room is spacious and the windows make it feel big. The service is very good.
And the food is excellent. The crystal dumplings with crab and pork might be the best appetizer I've ever had. The Rockfish is also excellent."

"The constantly change the menu is annoying...Don't care for the newest changes and would certainly not recommend them to guests or friends. No longer my favorite place for lunch or dinner. Not open on Monday's...very inconvenient. Do not allow take-out, another very large inconvenience. Sorry, I won't be heading there much anymore. Used to go there at least 2 times a week and always took guests...no more."

"The consensus from our group was that the food within every course was outstanding. The issue was the dinner service itself. We had a party of 6 and it took 3 hours (7pm to 10pm on a Monday night) to complete dinner service. It took an hour for our first course to arrive. Our server frequently came to our table to apologize for the slow kitchen, which was appreciated. A table next to us got up and left because the service was so poor."

"From the moment we arrived everything was done right!!
Each member of this "team" obviously takes pride their role in ensuring that your dining experience is all that you could have imagined / expected. And, expectations are always extremely high for a Wolfgang Puck restaurant.
The artistic presentation and unforgettable flavor of every dish make this a "go to" spot for EVERY special ocassion and ANY time you can."

"This is a lovely place. And - wonder of wonders, it has nice soft music that allows you to have a conversation with your dining companions.
Service was very good.
Food was good but not outstanding enough to justify the prices charged for very inexpensive to make Asian noodle dishes."

"The food here was excellent - modern Asian delicious. But we were extremely disappointed with the quality of service we received from our server. We wanted to order an appetizer with drinks so we could dine leisurely and she cautioned against it, since some entrees took 45 minutes or more to prepare. She then got lost for ten minutes while we decided on our entire dinner. In fact, our main course arrived barely after we finished our appetizer, so we were rushed for no reason. She never visited to see if the order was acceptable, and never asked whether we enjoyed dinner at all, I am a generous tipper, usually, since our kids have all been servers, but this time I was inclined to tip nothing, since we surely did not receive attention"

"We had an amazing experience, the food was outstanding and the dishes were presented beautifully. Highlights include the tuna tartare, suckling pig, day boat scallops, glazed pork and pan roasted rockfish. The server gave us some great recommendations, and although the service was a little impersonal it was very efficient. Overall it was one of the best meals/experiences that we've had in years!"

"I came here for my birthday and had the 7 course tasting menu with the wine pairing. It was a fabulous experience from start to finish. The food was beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. I was extremely impressed and would love to come back for their dim sum brunch because my favorite course was the dim sum sampler. All the wine was amazing as well. All around, we had a fantastic experience. Best birthday dinner ever!"

"We went to The Source with high hopes but left disappointed.
Service at 9 PM on a Friday night was nonexistent -- waiter took 20 mins. to reach our table and another 20 mins. to take our order.
Food didn't improve our opinion. Apps were fine, delivering a serviceable if unspectacular king crab cake and an under-seasoned version of Puck's trademark tuna tartare cone. Entrees, however, were awful -- pork was cooked far past "well done" and was dry as a bone; lamb chop was also overcooked and sloppily butchered to boot.
Sommelier, when she eventually came by, was knowledgeable and picked out a nice bottle for us. But wine service was oddly stilted for a Puck place (e.g. the odd folding table setup).
For $300, we hoped for"

"Not really sure about this place or that I would go back. We did not order entrees and rather stuck with lots of appetizers, which were pretty small for the price. I really liked every dish we had with the exception of the dessert, which was TINY and overpriced. The ambiance/people-watching was fun (lots of DC politcos, lobbyists, and plastic blondes abounded) but we were turned off by the fact that Wolfgang's website listed lots of sakes at reasonable prices by the bottle--turns out in person, they only had a couple of sakes that were extremely expensive...the old "bait and switch." I think I would rather pay these prices (over $200.00 bill) for better Asian food, but still, it was fun for a one-off."
