"As a vegan, I adored coming to a truly gourmet restaurant that met all of my food specifications. I was glad to see a few raw options as well, though I think more could be added to the menu. The cocktails and dessert, however, were my favorite above even the entrees. Candle 79 and restaurants like it will hopefully spark a new era of vegan restaurants all over the country."

"We recently went to Candle 79 for my daughter's birthday celebration. She is a vegetarian, so I researched this type of restaurant. It got great reviews and I agree. "This was my first visit to Candle 79..and a new convert to veganism,this restaurant definitely will make the transition easy for mr...the food was incredible. "I had seen some mixed reviews, but my wife and I had a great time and rate it at or very close to the top as a unique dining experience. We got a table on the second floor window side overlooking 79th Street,and enjoyed looking at the street scene from above. The service was very attentive, and the waitress offered to exchange one of the drinks we ordered which was not to our taste. The portion sizes were more than adequate, although some past reviewers had indicated that they were small. Many entrees are available both in entree size and as as appetizer. To economise, it may be prudent to take the appetizer size."

"I used to love the restaurant but the last two times that I've eaten there I felt that the quality of the food has deteriorated. It seems that they are not paying as much attention to the ingredients and the flavouring of the food. I used to love the picatta but I was terribly disappointed this time. "We loved Candle 79. We are both veggie and it was a great find. Really innovative food and a fine dining experience (difficult to find with veggie places). We travelled from UK and booked with "Open Table" before we left - it was a good thing too as it was a Sat eve and really busy. We were so taken with the food we bought the cookery book! "We don't usually eat vegitarian but decided to try something new. This is a great restaurant. Service was excellent. The food we liked was very good - this is a real Vegan rest. don't expect any dairy or meat. That said, if your not familiar with Seitan, don't let anyone tell you it tastes like chicken... try something else.

"Candle 79 was fantastic. I have been looking forward to going there for awhile and made a reservation while my family was in town for the weekend. The food was exceptional and creative. My father who very much likes meat for dinner, enjoyed the experience just as much as the rest of us! The service was great and the atmosphere was very comfortable. I especially liked that it was not a restaurant trying to be over-the-top "trendy" like many are these days. I'll be back!"

"It can be difficult to find well prepared vegan food, even in NY. My seitan dish was excellent, as good as any vegan meal I've ever had. My partner's dish was very good, not quite as flavorful or interesting as mine was. The wines we had were also delicious and a bit offbeat. Overall, a great experience, very warm staff, quiet and elegant atmosphere. Will be back. If pricing was a bit more modest I'd be back more often."

"What a unique and special restaurant! My girlfriend and I were in NY for her birthday and I wanted to find some place that would be memorable. Candle 79 was perfect! While we are not strict vegans, neither of us eats meat. The food was creative, artistically presented and, above all, delicious. The server was friendly and helpful (when we couldn't decide on an order because we wanted half the menu!) without ever being intrusive. We will absolutely be going again the next time we're in the city."

"The female hostess and our server were very pleasant when we walked in. The host, less so. We felt we waited about 15-20 minutes too long for our table, although we were about 5 minutes early for our reservation. This was only disappointing because there were a couple of empty tables for two within viewing range of where we stood and also we had to stand in the middle of the cramped room becuase there was nowhere else to wait. However, once we were seated, it turned out to be well worth the wait because we had a corner table with a terrific view of the bustling street below. The gourmet vegan fare was delicious, especially the Chocolate Peanut Butter Bliss , which was out of this world!"

"Superb food prep, extremely well-conceived vegan dishes (not easy), absolutely stunning chocalate brownie for dessert(really, a small cake with a delight of a bottom crust). The chili-grilled seitan good but less successful than the veg dishes that were not as it were trying to be reminiscent of meat... Corkage fee of $20 for a special bottle is very reasonable by NY standards for a restaurant of this quality. Very fine- very interesting and adventurous- wine list: just say no, to Chardonnay and Merlot!"

"We had a table in the bar area, and we found the booths to be somewhat uncomfortable due to the benches distance from the table. We often found ourselves leaning over to hear each other and to eat. "I had dinner at Candle 79 recently and I can honestly say it was one of the best meals of my life! Everything was amazing, from the starter to dessert. I went with two non-vegetarian family members who agreed that the food was amazing as well. The service was great and very fast. For a starter we had the Butternut Squash and Wild Mushroom-Spinach Ravioli, for the entree I had the Seitan Piccata, and for dessert the Cannoli's. Each dish was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Since I have been vegan for so long I have never had a cannoli before so that was such a treat. The cannoli's really were perfection, unbelievable. I will definitely be visiting Candle 79 again next time I am in NYC and highly recommend it!!"

"Candle 79 lived up to my lofty expectations. The menu was extremely creative, and the preparation of the food superb. The restaurant serves only vegan fare, but they appear to target all foodies with tasty, satisfying dishes. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. We were allowed ample time to savor the experience, and we did not feel rushed.

The only shortcoming I can find is the lack of a full bar. However, the wine list and beer selections are very good.

I look forward to my next trip to NYC and my next visit to Candle 79."

"Lost our table and was seated by the door. Food was good, service was rushed and mediocre. No amuse bouche, though it showed up on our check (listed at no cost). "overall it was a fine dinner..however we ordered a bottle of wine and they left the bottle at the at the bar and returned with the bottle when our glasses were empty...that is a big NO NO...the server apoligized when they realized what they had done but it left a bad feeling...I suppose I expected a little more knowledge on the part of the waitstaff.."

"Overall a wonderful dining experience. We were seated right away at a lovely table on the second floor with a view out the window. Even though it was a Saturday night, our server let us enjoy our meal slowly, and there was never any pressure to free up the table. Our food was beautiful and delicious. The ravioli and the stuffed avocado salad are not to be missed! This was possibly the best meal we've ever had."

"My girlfriends and I went for lunch during a day trip to N.Y. We had an incredible time. The food was absolutely delicious. Everything that we ordered was seasoned perfectly. The cocktails at the bar is a must have especially the caramel apple. It is a joy to find and all vegan restaurant where we can dine.The staff was wonderful. The entire staff made us feel completely welcome. We hated to leave but we had a train to catch. I can tell you this. We will definitely come back again when we visit N.Y. Thank you for one of the best experiences of our lives.

"i am actually not a vegetarian but the menu offers such a great variety that there is something for everybody! the service is great (and very attractive!) - however, they know that they're good and have a little tendency to act on it.
the pasta dishes are okay, but no herbs and spices were used, so they were a little tasteless. all other dishes are excellent, but make sure you tell them if you don't like spicy/hot food. they make changes to your food if you want them also make special arrangements. so no problem to take kids there!
overall summary: a definite must, eat everything but pasta!"

"I took my vegetarian daughter to Candle 79 for her birthday and she loved the food. I would not recommend it for non-vegetarians because everything was a little weird to me. I ordered the paella (and I've had paella many times in Spanish restaurants) and this dish wasn't what I expected. It was a circular clump of rice with some vegetables and seitan sausage. I don't think it had any saffron in it which is an ingredient in paella and gives the rice its distinctive color. But I guess you should go with a vegetarian review because my daughter said it was wonderful and she'd go back with friends. I can't imagine returning. The service was very nice."

"when we were initially seated at a table next to a large, slightly drafty window, we were pleased when the host was graciously able to relocate us. everything was delicious and beautifully plated with the exception of the amuse bouche, a bean puree on toast. it tasted good but was not appetizing in its appearance. suggestions: serve the bean puree in a small dish on the side? spread only a thin coating of it on the toast? or consider scrapping this one -- it is some diner's first look at Candle's cuisine and doesn't do it justice.

"Love Candle 79! We started with the vegetable nori rolls - the chipotle aioli dip was an interesting and tasty accompaniment. The roasted beet salad was very tasty and the macadamia nut cheese wonderful. The porcini encrusted tofu was delicious, and the black pepper and balsamic grilled seitan was over the top. My only regret is eating so much that dessert was out of the question! The wine list is also excellent and very diverse."

"A friend and I have celebrated each other's birthdays at Candle 79 for a number of years, and we go there a few other times each year, too. Neither of us lives near the restaurant, but we find it well worth the trip.
The service is stellar.
The food is always beautifully prepared and presented. Meat eaters or those who seek quantity might be disappointed, but those who appreciate quality will love this restaurant. The food is extremely fresh and thoughtfully prepared.
My favorite item on the menu is the homemade ginger ale."

"Terrifically prepared, tasty food that happens to be vegetarian. I took my wife for dinner as she is a vegetarian, though I am not, and we both loved this restaurant and highly recommend it. We enjoyed appetizers of butternut squash ravioli and eggplant with mushrooms to start -- both delicious. For my main course I had seitan picatta (their specialty), and ironicaly it reminded me of veal with its texture. Terrific flavors and satisfying, even for a carnivore. Dessert was a scrumptious Mexican brownie that consisted of a vegan brownie, vanilla vegan ice cream and a carmelized bannana. We were impressed with the attentive service, sophisticated and relaxed ambience and will certainly return with friends. Don't miss this gem!"

"My wife and I chose Candle 79 because of on-line reviews. We had high expectations - most of them met. But, not initially.
The Maitre'd seemed distracted and then a bit miffed when I requested sitting in a better location than the one he offered - next to the bar and the front door, even though I had mentioned that I wanted to sit some place warm. When I asked if we could sit upstairs he agreed. The upstairs was mostly empty.
Once there,the service improved.
The prices were reasonable and the food delicious.
Towards the end of meal the room became significantly more noisy as we waited for my wife's desert - delayed by a timing issue in the kitchen. It was removed from the bill.
The food impressed us enough to buy their cookbook."

"I always enjoy dining at Candle 79. Sometimes we eat at the bar (if we haven't made a reservation) and sometimes we eat downtstairs and sometimes upstairs. At the bar, we enjoy talking to Michael who is always friendly and remembers us.

We enjoy the specials as well as some of the seasonal menu items. And, the polenta fries and accompanying ketchup are a must. Dessert is also good (if you have room) and the biodynamic wines are wonderful.

I highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for an elegant meal that is not only vegan but also tasty and healthful."

"My wife and enjoyed dining upstairs while viewing the snow falling thru the tall large windows. The atmosphere is quiet with soft tones of the decor. The quality of the food creates an upscale meal. Upon our arrival the host did not realize I requested a cozy romantic table, he quickly accomodated us."

"We are vegans and the couple we were dining with are not - this was a perfect place for all of us to share a birthday dinner. We love this restaurant for all occasions and are happy not to have to compromise our diet when eating upscale. Everyone loved the meal they ordered and tasting from all the plates on the table. "The meal was FABULOUS! I've eaten at many vegetarian and vegan restaurants in NYC and this was one of the best vegan meals I've had. My mom is not a vegetarian and she loved the food, as well. We both had different seitan dishes and they were delicious. Service was good. Ambiance upstairs was lovely. I highly recommend this restaurant. The owners of Candle 79 also own Candle Cafe a few blocks away (which is a bit more casual than Candle 79) and that is one of my favorite restaurants."
