Joanne Kates (The Globe and Mail Restaurant Critic) writes…”Amaya, which opened recently in the (renovated) premises of the former Jov, is heaven-sent. The combination of silken service and excellent ingredients freshly cooked, with sensitive spicing, is seductive in the way that only the food of the subcontinent can be - rich, assertive, complex, exotic.” Just as the food avoids clichés, so does the setting. The 40-seat dining room is accented with subtle hints of India through stunning photography creating an inviting atmosphere that is casual and friendly yet elegant and sophisticated.

"Having never had Indian food, we didn't know what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised. The butter chicken and the biryani were outstanding, as we're the appetizers. Definitely a great choice if you are looking for something different and exotic. The only draw back is that the restaurant was a $25 cab ride from downtown Toronto."

"The 3 small plates we ordered were excellent. The lamb was done perfectly, the lobster was exquisite and the street chaats were interesting.
The 4 big plates in my opinion were average. The chicken biryani lacked flavor and was disappointing as was the butter chicken. The Baigan Bharta was very good and had the great smokiness that is critical for the Bharta. The daal makhni was pretty ok..
Service was a little sloppy with multiple people bring stuff.. With items arriving at different times. Overall a 6/10. I will go back for the small plates though."

I also found it offensive that the waiter added on a 15% tip to the bill because I used a groupon, even though we were only a party of 4. "It was a particularly busy and very noisy Saturday night at Amaya. My friend and I couldn't hear each other and had to shout. The service was therefore particularly slow but the waiters were courteous. I've been to this restaurant twice now and find that the food all tastes the same. They use way too much tomato paste in their sauces and one cannot define any difference in the spices they use. I wouldn't go back."

"Food was very good and reasonably priced. The vegetarian dishes, lamb lollipops, butter chicken and naan were delicious. However, our waiter messed up the order on the tasting menu for my sister-in-law and her husband because he didn't seem to know how it worked. "As always, the food at Amaya the Indian Room is awesome and so we keep coming back. The service however, twice in a row, has been very slow. Even though we had reservations, we waited at the front for someone to seat us for 15 minutes!! There seem to be too few wait staff for the number of customers. This does not make a good first impression on diners."

"The pricing was steep for the portions they provided. For two people not including drinks the total came to $100.00. We ordered the lamb lolly-pops and chicken tikka masala for the apps, then my boyfriend ordered the lamb vindaloo for his main & I ordered the channa masala, the allo gobi for my main also rice and 2 orders of garlic naan bread.
The cauliflower had a strange taste & the channa masala was good but there wasn't enough. The garlic naan was over-priced ¬ that great as there was no garlic taste at all.
Also, when the bill arrived the tip was already included in the bill which bothersome as this should be our choice what we give.

"Overall the food was tastey and very well presented. We had the tasting menu, which I would not do again. Way to many fritter appetizers. They all tasted the same. If I had just chosen what dishes we liked, there would not have been fish or lamb included, which I don't like. Even though the server knew this, he gave us two courses of lamb. My husband liked it, but it meant we had only one main course of chicken to share. I said no fish if not crispy. We got a shrimp appetizer in a sauce, not crispy. We also indicated that we liked our food very spicey, but it could have had much more heat for us. So the price was high for the amount of dishes I enjoyed. It ended up costing about $90 each with one bottle of Reisling and no desert or coffee."

"Customer Service - horrible, made to feel like a burden, waited 40 minutes after our reservation time for a table and eventually left without eating, was rudely spoken to be the front of house manager and were literally waved off with a hand. No apologies given. Drinks - Server did not know how to make drinks and after waiting for over 5 minutes for him to find the ingredients for one of their signature cocktails he came back and made the drink without it and didn't inform me when he served it to me. Food - never got that far - left without eating Overall - the restaurant was chaotic and the wait staff did not appear to know what they were they were doing and the manager only seem to be making it worse - long line up out the door"

"We really enjoyed the atmosphere, food and service at Amaya. The lighting was low with candles on the tables. Our servers were attentive and described each dish as they served it. We had a curry prawn appetizer, butter chicken, curried cod, Saag paneer, rice and naan. Everything was delicious. We plan to return."

"The food is always delicious and carefully prepared and plated. The new look inside is warm and cozy. Our meal was a bit slow but that may only have been notices because we were in a hurry. Best East Indian food in Toronto!"

"Simply outstanding and delicious food. I could taste each spice, with explosion of flavours in every bite and nothing was spicy. I am from India so I know this food very well. My favourite was Scallop and Goan Chorizo in South Indian sauce - the sweetness of the scallops married so well with the South Indian style of spice blend."

I has heard that the portions were small, however I ordered the duck
and I couldn't finish it as it was to much. Very different twist on

"The food at Amaya the Indian room is very good, far superior to it's take away partner. The selection is good and the flavors are fantastic. There were a few glitches. The service was slow and the food came out slightly warm, not hot. We mentioned this to our waiter and he just walked away. Didn't offer to help at all. After we made that comment we didn't see him again until the bill came. It's unfortunate because the food is really flavorful and the atmosphere is lovely."

"Our reservation was for 8:45 and we arrived 15 minutes early. We were told we'd be seating around 8:50, so we walked around the street which was fine. We got back to the restaurant and waited and waited. By 9:15 the host offered us complimentary champagne, which we greatly appreciated. It made the experience better. When we were seated, the service was outstanding. The food came at an appropriate time and was absolutely delicious. Tasty is the only word I can use to describe the food. We asked for more rice, but they ran out of rice (it was late) so we were given complementary naan."
