Saffron Restaurant & Lounge is a modern Mediterranean/Middle Eastern restaurant in the heart of Minneapolis warehouse district. Chef Sameh Wadi was nominated in 2008 & 2009 for James Beard Award in “Rising Star” Category. Chef Wadi is wowing his guests with slow cooked lamb shoulder with lamb bacon, harissa and chickpeas. "This was a very pleasant experience. We chose the chef's tasting menu which, if we compared it with other chef's tasting menu's at other restaurants, could have used one more small course. Pricing for the 3 course tasting menu was appropriate and that was nice. The wine pairings with the food were appropriate, but not overly thought provoking. We would go to this restaurant again."

"Saffron is a must go. The food was incredible. The small plates give you a taste of all the amazing flavor combinations that are possible at this restaurant, like the fried califlower to dip in sheep milk fondue, or the roasted to perfection baba ganoush. It was a great idea to have a salad before the entree because the beet salad (red and golden) with honey and goat cheese was perfect. The restaurant has a changing vegetarian option, which as a vegetarian, is appreciated. We had a delicious roasted vegetable and potato gratin, with eggplant, brussel sprouts, squash, and more, topped with a browned feta. Dessert was a spiritual experience; do not skip dessert. The cocktails were creative and delicious. Saffron was a delight."

"High quality ingredients used in creative ways. Not for the meat and potatoes crowd, but Saffron is a great choice for someone willing to step off (but not too far off) the beaten path and suspend some preconceptions about what should and should not taste good.

We went on a Monday night and were sure that Chef Wadi would not be in the kitchen, but there he was. Definitely a rising star!"

"We eat out very frequently, and love trying new places. Saffron has easily become one of our favorite places to dine, and we find ourselves returning often. The food is exceptional and novel, and service is always outstanding. On this visit, we both enjoyed the three-course tasting menu with wine pairings. The vegetarian course (caramelized winter vegetables with goat cheese) was delicious, as was the lamb. Our server was attentive and familiar with the menu, and gave decisive advice."

"Our group of four visited Saffron on the Friday night of Restaurant Week. I had seen the episode of Iron Chef, and needless to say, we came in with high expectations. It has been a long time since I have had such high hopes for a restaurant, but they really did deliver. Sometimes during restaurant week, I feel like something ends up lacking--whether its the food, or the service since the staff may not want to spend as much time on you as another guest ordering off the regular menu. This was not the case here. The service was great, and the food was outstanding. It was an interesting balance of familiar favorites with an interesting twist. I can't wait to go back!!"

"My entire party of 4 though Saffron was overrated. The food tasted very salty, about 1/3 of my lamb was way overcooked, and some of the flavor combinations were a bit odd. The ganache dessert was probably the best part of the meal. Saffron did not meet my expectations."

"I was really disappointed with this restaurant. So much hype and nothing was delivered on flavor or ingenuity. My friends and I went to this renowned restaurant expecting to be blown away by the experience and we left utterly disappointed with huge holes in our pocket books for flavorless food. Truly a disappointment! I will not be endorsing this restaurant to family and friends. There are too many other gems in Minneapolis/St.Paul to waste your time and your palette here."

"The entire evening was amazing! A group of 4 of us went for restaurant week and the service and food were incredible. It is outstanding, inventive food with a friendly and laid-back waitstaff that had great recommendations. The wine pairing suggestions were very well thought-out and really enhanced the flavors of the meal. It was great to try during restaurant week - I will definitely be back!"

"What a delicious meal! We particularly enjoyed the outstanding baba ghanouj, kofta kebabs and the scallops entree. The lamb shoulder, touted as the specialty, was fine but not a "Wow." The server, very good most of the meal, recommended some lovely wines. "The food was both adventurous and yet somehow comforting, a mixture of familiar and favorite flavors with exotic and unexpected ones. The service was second to none, not only was our server wonderful and attentive, but the hosts both kept track of my party, knowing how long we had been waiting for a table, what course we were on, and going to collect our jackets from the coat check before I had the opportunity to turn in my ticket. It was a long meal, not that I am complaining, but this is not the sort of place you go if you are on a time schedule. It was a relaxed evening with our three course meal (plus bread and hummus appetizer) lasting about 2 and a half hours. An overall wonderful experience, we will be back soon!"

"The waitstaff was as wonderful as the food! There were 6 in our group and we shared nearly all of our dishes, the food was fabulous. Each dish was fresh and full of different tastes and textures. The Haloumi Cheese, Yello Lentil Dip & Kofta Meatballs are great Mezze's. The Blue Prawn Saganaki & Deviled Eggs stole the show for small plates, as did the superbly prepared Duck Breast as an entree. We were pleased with our entire evening begining to end. Don't skip on dessert here the homemade icecream should not be missed! We brought our own wines and our waiter helped us create the best pairings. THe corkage fee was reasonable. We'll go back soon!"

"An intimate evening which began with the lentil soup; pureed and wild with flavor. The beet salad wonderful presentation and nicely seasoned. The Lamb shank was as you would expect in 'fall off the bone' condition. "Our overall experience was phenomenal. The wait staff what fantastic not annoyingly present but rather always within reach and clearly cohesive in their efforts to serve. The menu was a perfect blend of Mediterranean and Indian cuisine with wonderful surprises such as the caramel ice cream. I loved the sweat and salty caramel forefront flavors followed by a surprising burst of spice and heat the second it hits your throat. Even the host at the door was charming and charismatic while seating guests."

"The food is excellent in this restaurant. This is the second time that I have eaten here.
While I do recommend this restaurant, I have one very small criticism. The waiters are a bit over-solicitous and a tad interruptive. They are not rude but they tend to hover just a little too much. However, I do recognize that there is a thin line between excellent service and over-service."

"Chef Sameh Wadi, whom we saw recently on this season's premiere of Iron Chef, did not disappoint. The dishes are beautifully presented, the flavors amazing. "2/12/2010 Enjoyed Saffron! Service was warm, inviting--each and every person seemed genuinely happy that we chose their restaurant. Waiter was helpful/expert. We shared the fois gras and deviled eggs; both wonderful, unusual flavors..beautifully presented. For entrees--salmon w/clams and the lamb. Salmon had potatoes & a rich spicy tomatoe sauce, covering everything in the dish. The sauce was good, but overpowered the delicate salmon, and since the potatoes were part of the sauce, those also--one note. My husband enjoyed his lamb. Desserts...oh my. Chocolate ganache puff pastry w/ice cream & sour cherry sorbet, & salted caramel semifreddo. Both were outstanding--caramel dessert was a flavor explosion of salt, spicy, creamy..pure heaven."

"The taste and service were excellent. They were very accomodating and even made sure we had a cab waiting so we could make a curtain time. The server was top notch. She made dead on suggestions and was able to make conversation and connections with me as well as my 16 year old. I got to interact briefly with the chef which was nice. "We ordered a variety of mezze and small plates and shared an entree. The food was creative, tasty, and presented well. The only exception was the duck which was a bit overdone (very little pink). Our favorite plate was the mirqaz sausage which came in a spicy tomato sauce. The staff was very knowledgeable about the food and we got a great dessert wine pairing recommendation. They also had some good and interesting specialty cocktails. My only challenge for the chef would be to come up with some additional vegetable options, green or otherwise. It is winter in MN but the only green option was a mixed salad. You show creativity with other items, do the same in this area. We would definitely go back and do it again."

"We were a group of 6 and all of us raved about the food. Favorites were the lamb shoulder, the scallops and the duck breast. Plus we had a wonderful assortment of mezze and small plates. Our server always had time for us answering our questions, and suggested a wonderful wine for us. It was exciting that we could see the chef from where we were sitting, we did choose this place since he was on Iron Chef America. Look forward to returning in the future."

"Very gracious host who was happy to tell us about his brother's chef competition results. Small plates were truly small - hard to share in a group of eight. Delicious bread and hummus were refilled for all to enjoy. Popular spot, filled with guests. The noise level made it a challenge to visit across the circular table for eight. "The best of Saffron was the delightful cuisine. We tried the tasting menu including the Chicken ravioli with black olives dill, then the Beef Hanger Steak. These two dishes, part of the tasting menu, showed the masterful use of spices that created a powerful rainbow of flavors. I recommend to order the suggested wine pairing to complement the food. My wife and I sat on a romantic corner of the restaurant. The waiter was very attentive and gladly explained the choices. Great customer service, excellent food, in summary a good place to celebrate an important event like our wedding anniversary."

"I think this was our 3rd time at Saffron and we again had a great time and had another amazing meal. We were excited to go again after hearing Chef Wadi was going to be on the Iron Chef. We had a big mix of the appetizers this time (even tried the lamb brains-which were actually pretty good!), a bunch of the small plates, and my wife and I both had the lamb shoulder after her's was so good last time we went. "The food was terrific (lamb shoulder and chicken bisteeya for entrees; lentil dip, fried mussels, fried cauliflower, meatballs for mezze) and the service was great. Our server paced the food to make sure we were able to make our Orchestra tickets.

"We came for a birthday dinner and found everything to be outstanding! Among many other small plates, I had the scallops with cauliflower and chick peas and thought the scallops were perfectly cooked. The birthday boy had the beef strip with persian gnocchi and it was hard for me to not want to gobble up all of his gnocchi - so flavorful and delicious."

"I made my first visit to Saffron over the weekend, and loved it. We loved the ambience and decor, although we were a little cold, maybe due to the high ceilings. My companion was just back from North Africa, and she loved the food, which she thought was very authentic. We weren't thrilled with the vegetarian dish of winter vegetables, which was a little bland, but everything else was great. The wine list is short, but adequate. Service, as others have said, was about perfect - friendly and helpful, not intrusive or smarmy. I wish I had the money to go back more often."

"Saffron has to be the classiest restaurant in Minneapolis.

The care of their guests, the knowledge of the wait staff, the extraordinary flavors that are artfully presented on each plate . . . .

The restaurant has a personal touch though not intrusive.
It is like your table is the focus of the entire staff and kitchen, yet it is the same for each party.

The dress of the restaurant is hip but not in an overbearing way . . . it reflects an understatement that permeates throughout; a feeling that when you enter, you've arrived on a real scene.

This is the top of a chef driven restaurant. True creativity in cusine is when you can order anything, any small plate, any entree, anything, and know the selection will be incomparable."

"The New Year'Eve fixed price menu and wine pairings was spectacularly wonderful dinner. I count this experience as one of the best meals I have ever had. The service was warm and perfectly timed. This is a favorite spot for us but this dinner was simply amazing. The owners and staff make you feel welcomes as a good friend. There just aren't words to describe how much we love Saffron."

"Great food! Excellent wine list. A fun to talk with a friend. We began with an assortment of different Mezze (little plates like tapa). We started with 4. "We could not have had a better meal or a better time. I took my friend for a birthday dinner. They greeted her by name and wished her a happy birthday. There was a birthday message using her name printed at the top of the menu which they saved for her as a keepsake. Our host and our waiter were excellent. They were attentive and helpful without overwhelming us. The waiter made great suggestions and provided extra information for us--foodies that we are. Part of me hopes that Saffron takes off, because it is truly great, and part of me hopes that everyone else doesn't discover it so that my friend and I can use this restaurant as our personal dining room for family and friends. It was that good all the way around."

"service was extremely attentive...food was hit or miss..skip the mussels and orzo( it was waaaay to salty..almost inedible) Humus is very good but that is not a dish to hang your hat on. "I went here with my boyfriend for his birthday. The service was outstanding, the food was excellent, and the entire evening was a success. The staff is top of the line, they really know how to give great service and are attentive without being intrusive. We had an excellent time. We also returned later to meet up with friends for their happy hour. The drinks are phenomenal and mixed to perfection. Although we were a large party, our server was on top of it all - never letting drinks get low, remembering what everyone ordered and just created a fabulous evening for all of us. I am a HUGE fan of Saffron and plan to visit again and again as often as I can. Oh and don't let the simplicity of the menu fool you, the food is beyond outstanding!"

"We celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary at Saffron and it was truly excellent. We were very well treated; a personalized menu, very attentive staff (Adam was very knowledgeable, though he spoke a little too fast!) and the food was wonderful.
I had the November prix fixe menu(tasting menu)with the wine pairing; Potato Soup with mussels; Beef Hanger Steak with parsnips; a flight of aromatic house made ice creams and sorbets - a delicious selection of food and excellent wine pairings.
My wife started with the fried cauliflower, which was probably the only let down of the whole evening; it was just too salty. She followed this with the duck breast - she said it was wonderful, and finished with the chocolate ganache cake.
