"This is always our first stop when we visit SF. Their lunch menu is varied and delicious; our special prep requests are always honored. The servers (Dustan, Matt, and Megan) are truly friendly, attentive, and helpful. The greeter and support staff is, likewise, top-notch. Pan-fried noodles with chicken, firecracker chicken, moo shu pork - all are tasty lunch entrees. And the pot stickers!!!"

"After one disappointing adventure, Shanghai 1930 redeemed itself on our latest visit. The waiter was very helpful making sure we ordered a good variety of dishes. The Fish on the Vine was particularly wow. The cocktails are fantastic and a better choice than the wine, which doesn't seem to complement the food very well. For those wanting a lighter meal, the lounge is a great option."

"Some friends recommended Shanghai 1930 based on their recent trip to SF. I have to say that they were right on with the recommendation. My wife and I greatly enjoyed the atmosphere and particularly the live jazz during dinner. Adult atmosphere without the stuffiness. The food was top notch. Decided to try the potstickers for an appetizer, good choice. Nice portions, favorful, and not over cooked as we see so often. We highly suggest the wok seared prawns with garlic noodles and the crispy sichuan beef. Egg white fried rice was good but a tad bland for my taste. The entire experience was enjoyable and we will return."

"The music of Jonathan Poretz, et al, is fantastic. He puts on a show like no other
performers in this nightclub. We hope they continue to book him. Food is okay -
it is getting monotonous - same old items on the menu. They need to update.
The Lemon Chicken is wonderful. Service can be slow, but we are never in a hurry.
It's great to dine and listen to some good music."

"I had high expectations for this place and was really disappointed. The live jazz was nice, but the food was mediocre. At 7:30, the place was not bustling at all, though a fair number of tables were filled. It being in the basement, and taking a peek at the empty tables, my first impression of the place was pretty poor too: I expected a bustling, loungey place.

The food was only ok. A bit disappointed that they charged us for a side of fried rice as an entree, as well even though we only wanted the side ($14). Total bill came to $130 for 3 w/ mains, dim sum, and two cocktails.

On the whole, I wouldn't recommend this place. So many great places to eat in the city; I feel like I wasted a night of potentially really good eating."

"This by far is the most amazing restaurant I've ever been to. The atmosphere was amazing. It's a really upscale place but I didn't sense a bit of snoodiness. The service was amazing, we even got a free appetizer. The jazz music was unbelievable. Even though the place is scheduled to close at 11 they served the crowd by doing an extra 3 or 4 songs. All the waitors and waitresses were very personable and a joy to have at our table when being served."

"this is my 3rd visit to Shanghai 1930. The cold appetizer pressed spinach with tofu was very good as was The Lion King pork/tofu meatballs with cellophane noodles. The "3 coins in a fountain" scallop dish was not as satisfactory - the scallops didn't taste fresh. We sat in one of the semi circle booth which was very elegant."

"the food was really tasty. Everything was overpriced for the amount u get. For the price of each item, 2 people should be able to share. That was not the case. When the plates were brought out..i couldn't believe it. Example...the fire cracking chicken..my goodness it was more peppers then chicken; who actually eat peppers? I think we got beat on that one. Chow Mein and rice was a good portion and 2 peole can share that. Jazz band was excellent.

I will be coming back for my 20 year anniversary with Chevron with about 8 people joining me. Look forward to coming back."

"A jazz club and restaurant, Shanghai 1930 is an upscale chinese restaurant with traditional and fusion dishes. In general, the food is very good. The prices are expensive but not outrageous. There is $10 parking available so you can check your car with a parking person at the front door.

Jazz starts up about 8pm and it is pleasant but LOUD. There is no solid partition between the Jazz stage and the restaurant so diners have to talk over live music. That can detract from the intimacy.

The ambiance is cool and has the feel of a golden era nightclub. The staff are professional and courteous."

"Excellent food and good jazz. in fact, the music on Friday night, 5/1/09, was so good that we ate in the bar to enjoy it even more. We returned for jazz Saturday night, 5/2, and the music was very disappointing. The genre was more "oldies elevator pop music" than jazz. Also, the cigar smoke from the private club poured into the bar and was unbearable. We finally left because we couldn't stand either the music or the cigar smoke. We wished that we wouldn't have gone back since our very positive experience Friday was nullified."

"We arrived 5 minutes earlier than reservation, but they don't have seat for us and they let us wait 15 minutes to get seat. They put us at end of the small table which dark and straight view to the bathroom. We requested to change the seat. (There are some empty seats. Why we need to wait??). The ambiance is good and jazz band was so cool, but food was just average. If you expect good Chinese food, go to china town. They have much cheaper and better food."

"Great experience. The food was excellent and the service as well. We ordered the Beggar's chicken which had great flavor and was very moist. The live jazz music was a bonus, not quite what you would expect in a Chinese restaurant, but very relaxing and romantic. The lighting and privacy was perfect, but the decor was somewhat under my expectations."

"Shanghai 1930 is one of those unique places that warrent a return visit. The food is very good and the service overall was fine. Order taking was a bit slow this time around given that there were only 3 tables of patrons. Other than that, it will warrent a return visit in the near future."

"Combine jazz with a turn-of-the-century basement romantic setting and you have a recipe for an extremely awesome evening with a loved one or friends. When you first arrive through the understated entrance, you are transported back in time to an opium den and then get bombarded with a riot of jazz from the soothing bar scene. I definitely will add this place to my list and let all my friends know where to go for an unbelieveable list of food, fine wine and great music."

"Loved the Janette Harris band when we came in. Came an hour early and sat in the bar. It was the perfect prelude to a great night. It was our anniversary. Our waiter was wonderful and very attentive. He even gave us some of the SHanghai 1930 chopsticks. I had the little bites Short RIbs which were great. My husband had the General Chicken which was good. My Hot and Sour soup was perfect...not your slimy, cornstarch laden goop you can sometimes get. The flavors were good and had a pleasant brothy soup. We lingered longer in a nice round semi-circle booth. It was four doors down from our Hotel which we loved. Right around the corner from the posh, way-too-expensive Boulevard restaurant."

"Upon arriving the first impression is that the décor is a bit shabby and could use some updates. Really looks like a 1990's version of the 1930's including the logo, signage, etc. Service was fairly helpful and there were no excessive waits on a Friday night. Dim sum appetizer was good and we appreciated the vegetarian options. Overall the food was average but not great and did not justify the price in taste or presentation. Custom cocktails were tasty and strong.
I really wanted to like Shanghai 1930 but it was a let-down in regards to design/ambiance and food. I would strongly recommend some upgrades in décor and menu (this was really typical Chinese food with nothing stand out to justify the price) or lower the prices and expectations."

"Fun! We went to have a romantic dinner for two but the booths were gigantic and there was a very large party standing and drinking around our table in the middle of the restaurant. So we opted to moved into the bar. As long as it wasn't going to be quiet and intimate, we mine as well listen to the live music and watch the jazz band. That was a good move and turned out to be fun. Shrimp and pork dumplings were excellent. A beef (Mongolian?) entree we ordered was just so-so. Go for the live show, not the food."
