Review 6 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We had always wanted to visit Shanghai 1930, so our anniversary became the occassion. The food presentation and flavors were wonderful. The service was fast and friendly. We had made reservations through OpenTable, so got a booth, which was comfortable. We moved into the bar after dinner to listen to an awesome live jazz band (Protege). It was a lovely evening and we're inviting friends to go with us next time!"

Review 9 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"The food was awful with service to match. The restaurant has the feel of a dying establishment on life support - - - and it's time to pull the plug. You can find much better Chinese food pretty much anywhere in this city, so I can't imagine why anyone would return to this restaurant for a repeat visit."

Review 10 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We booked a lunch celebration for a co-worker here. It was very disappointing. The restaurant looks a pretty run down inside, worn carpet, fading paint, etc. We sat toward the back where there was a cloud of smoke from the kitchen during our entire meal. The food was medicore, the chinese chicken salad was smothered in dressing, the Sichuan Beef was rubbery and not very flavorful. Our waiter was from the school of bare bones service and after delivering our bill he stood and waited for us to settle it. I was so excited to come here and was gravely disappointed. Perhaps their happy hour scene is a better exprience but the food and service was not a stellar experience."

Review 11 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I first tried Shanghai 1930 about six months ago. I was less pleased on the second visit. The food seemed less fresh, the portions smaller. While one appreciates service which is not rushed, the service was inexcusably slow. Since I was entertaining guests from out of town, I was somewhat disappointed with the experience. While I might try it again, I would not take out-of-town guests until I found that the experience improved. There are certainly better - and more impressive - options."

Review 13 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Other reviews that indicated the food was okay and overpriced were surprisingly accurate. I was disappointed the food was no where near what we expected of an upscale gourmet Asian restaurant. The chain restaurnat PF Changs and locally owned small chinese restaurants rate better. The wine list is extensive and expensive and would probably please a true conisseur. Their Mai Tai ($14) was okay. The smooth jazz music that played from the Blue Bar while we were there on a Thursday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. was enjoyable and not too loud. The best part of the evening was the service. Our server, Dustin was very personable, friendly, and attentive. Even though he was great, we will not likely return to Shanghai 1930."

Review 16 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Our dining experience at Shanghai was fun. We enjoyed the food and the live Jazz. The only dissapointing experience was the service. The waitress was nice but service was very, very, very, slow. It appeared as though she was the only waitress in our area. We were seated in front of the Jazz band which was quite nice, but slow service. I would dine there again, but only if they have more staff to accomodate the guests."

Review 25 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I had been to Shanghai 1930 a few years ago,and it was fabulous,so when the opportunity came up to visit San Francisco with my fiance, again,Shanghai 1930 was a clear choice. We were both somewhat disappointed in our experience, the food was O.K, the Dim sum awe sum,the problem we didn't expect to engage was that they served my fiance a different wine than she had originally ordered when she asked for a second glass, they were two completely different wines, one very expensive, one very mediocre, and thought she would not be able to tell the difference when she drank it. The other negative experience was at a near by table, Mr. intoxicated profanity sat, belching out every profanity known to man in every sentence loudly,I wasted $160.00 for this."

Review 30 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I hadn't been to the restaurant in a few months and was disappointed in the food. Everything was too sweet and didn't have any interesting spices or flavors. The Yiubao shrimp in particular was quite sweet and I don't remember that being in the description -- if I had seen that I wouldn't have ordered it. The five-spice pork was also sweet and was lacking the taste of any spices. I didn't expect a lot of flavor in the sauce for the little pillows (after all, it is light fish), but again the dish seemed too sweet."

Review 34 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Good atmosphere and the service was very attentive. I did think it was a bit expensive for Chinese food that was not really all that different than the food you would get at a cheaper restaurant.

I would recommend the restaurant take a look at their entrance way as well. The carpet is worn and should be replaced.

"The menu offers many unusual dishes plus the more common traditional dishes. The food has much less salt in it and has many other spices instead. The beggars chicken needed to be ordered a day ahead is a big surprise and is the first Chinese restaurant we have seen it.
The jazz music is just the right level of sound in the dining room and vibrant in the bar.
Beef used is of an excellent quality not the commonly used Chinese restaurant beef that requires pounding and overcooking to be chewable. What wonderful starters with duck confit in lettuce leaves and three types of dim sum.The sauces are delicious. The service is friendly and workers very knowledgeable. This is the very best Chinese restaurant.

Review 40 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Great place to show off the unique SF food scene. Great atmosphere (even better when there is live jazz playing - Thursday - Saturday), well-executed Chinese food, somewhat small portions, but very flavorful and satisfying. Recommend the chocolate mousse dessert - decadent, perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Valet parking available."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"What a fun nightspot. Really excellent jazz, and the service was great. We couldn't make our reservation for one night, and were able to move it over to the next night - friendly and helpful staff. We would definitely go back. Probably the dim sum on the bar menu is one of the best choices - original!"

Review 43 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This restaurant really get's it. The ambience, service, and food was superb. The wait staff and management were attentive and the food presentation was excellent. The extensive wine list was impressive. The lettuce wraps had just the right amount of spice and "The Lion King" was a table hit. I would definitely go again, whether in a group or just on a romantic date. It is a must see."

Review 49 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Great appetizers, great drinks, incredible bar, great music, good service, incredible dessert.....but the entrees were equivalent to a mid-level chinese restaurant on geary, or at best a PF Chang's. Good but not equivalent to the decor and style of the place. Its clear that a more polished menu with better presentation would make this place really five stars all around. Also, this place needs to take more risks with music and attract more locals, it seemed like we were outnumbered by tourists...which is OK, but detracts from what kind of risks the restaurant can take in terms of menu and music."

Review 51 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We had just arrived in SF after a very long trip from NJ. We showed up at the restaurant an hour early and they were completely gracious. We were seated immediately - staff was very attentive without begin OVERLY attentive. Answered questions, made good suggestions. Food is served family style and we enjoyed trying different meals. Garlic noodles, special fried rice outstanding. WE had a little bit of everything - shrimp, mongolian lambs chops, chicken, beef. Each was a hit. Had we stuck with our original reservation time we would have enjoyed the jazz quartet that was playing as we left. we arrived tired, cranky and hungry and left happy and raving about the food."

Review 54 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Although my friend and I had accidentally double-booked our lunch reservation, and the restaurant was not at all full, we had to wait in the bar for our table. After being seated we had a leisurely wait and someone filled our water glasses and took our beverage orders. After another wait, our server took our food orders and asked us again what beverages we wanted. Our meals were very good; my friend had the pillows of sliced fish and I had the Buddha's delight; the vegetables were varied, neither under- nor overcooked, and the delicate sauce was an enhancement. This has consistently been my experience; the upside of the prolonged waits for service is that you can have an unhurried meal and plenty of time for relaxed conversation"

Review 56 for Shanghai 1930

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I last visited Shanghai 1930 in April and was pleased to see that the food and service quality remained at the same high level. For ths visit, we had the lunch special filet mignon beef cubes, fish pillows with mushrooms and xiaoxing wine sauce, sweet and sour pork - very flavorful. Loved the fried rice and sauteed beans. One person in our party of three had warmed brandy - the aroma was so nice! On both occasions, we celebrated a birthday, and the staff was discreet about putting the candle in the dessert. Excellent place for a low-key birthday celebration."
