Motor Supply Company Bistro
Located in the historic Congaree Vista with a heated patio and free valet parking, Motor Supply has been serving progressive, New World cuisine using classic French culinary techniques for over 20 years. Lunch, dinner and brunch menus change daily, featuring contemporary American, French, Italian and Asian cuisine. We are Columbia's foremost "farm to fork" restaurant, working sustainable farms and an almost exclusively local larder of produce and meats. Seafood is caught off of the Carolina coast, and all of our stocks, sauces and desserts are made on site, including our charcuterie, with house-made sausages, bacon, country pate, and rillettes, all the way down to the pickles and mustard. Our early 19th century, solid-oak bar with marble columns, imported from Europe, serves 180+ fine wines (Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, 2006-12), an extensive list of imported, domestic and high gravity beers, as well as house-infused spirits, handmade bitters, and barrel-aged cocktails.

"Wow, we loved the food we had at Motor Supply, but I do believe it was the most excruciatingly LOUD restaurant where we have ever dined. We could not hear the waitress as she explained the specials, we could not hear ourselves talk, we could not hear ourselves think. I was exhausted when I left the place. The table behind us was one with 8 people, and they were literally shouting to each other with enthusiasm so they could also be heard, and they totally drowned us and everyone else out. In our opinion, the staff/management has to step up in these situations to persuade the people to calm down/quite down for everyone's comfort. The place would benefit from table cloths, carpeted ceiling, loads of cloth draperies to deaden the echoes."

"I've eaten at Motor Supply Company before, the first was for dinner and the most recent visit was for lunch after USC's graduation ceremony. My lunch experience was MUCH different than dinner. The evening server was phenomenal and so attentive, however our server for lunch left much to be desired. Aside from her lack of enthusiasm or flair - the food was outstanding! For such great quality/portion sizes the prices are definitely reasonable!"

"My husband and I went to MSC Bistro for dinner on Saturday night. After reading other reviews we asked for a table inside. It seemed to be just as loud inside as outside. Our meals were amazing, the wine list extensive and the service was perfect. We'll definitely be back and would recommend it as well. I'm a chef and very picky, but this was outstanding. "Had always read very good things about this restaurant. However, recent reviews had suggested the service tended to be rushed, and food undercooked. We did NOT experience either of these! The charcuterie was wonderful, as was my steak bavette. Service was attentive and thorough. Dessert was a disappointment--rather pedestrian--especially so given the delightful, inventive starter and entrees.

"The restaurant was absolutely amazing, I had a great time. The food was some of the best I've ever had, and I've travelled extensively. The service was great, as was the wine menu. I paid around $100 for two people, and it was honestly worth the money. The only problem I had was from the social club behind them. My date and I sat on the back porch which was enjoyable for the first half hour or so, then the club behind the restaurant became active. The loud music and noise from people entering and exiting the club was distracting and ruined the mood somewhat, however I still highly recommend this restaurant."

"I would have rated this higher except for two things: First, we made reservations, but did not request outdoor seating. That would have been fine except for the loud base beat of either cars in the parking lot or a nearby club that could be heard loudly thumping through most of dinner. Secondly, our waiter was not very attentive. He had tables inside and out and seemed stretched thin (it was a Thursday.) Having said that, the food is excellent and I would go back, but with more knowledge of where to sit."

"I had an amazing evening at Motor Supply Co. I took my girlfriend for her birthday before Cirque Du Soleil. We were given a great table on the patio. We had an early reservation and even though we were the first table in the restaurant the hostess and server were ready. They knew we were celebrating a special occasion and that we had to keep a schedule. Our server was very knowledge about the daily changing menu and took the time to tell us just how special all the local products were. All the food was amazing including the house made chacuterie which arrived compliments of the chef to help us celebrate our special occasion. The bone in pork t-bone was fantastic. Overall one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while."

"I have been here before and the food was awesome. They change the menu every day. This experience was not that good. I'm not sure if my tomatoe bacon soup was suppose to be cold but it was. "Our meal tasted delicious, our server was friendly and appropriately but not annoyingly attentive, and the patio was pleasant on a lovely evening. The only off-putting aspect of our visit was that we were told, as soon as we arrived, that the kitchen closed at 9:30; if the restaurant is trying to fill 9:15 reservations (like ours), the diner is bound to feel rushed, like a "squeezed-in" last bit of revenue for the night, even with a waiter as nice as Brendon. Perhaps the last reservations should be at 9:00."

"This was my third visit to Motor Supply, and on the first two visits, I was extremely pleased with the dining experience and food. On this occasion, unfortunately, I brought several colleagues from Germany, and the prime rib was one of the worst cuts of beef I have ever eaten. I am typically pretty easy to please, but the cut of meat was tough and tasted as if it had been cooked with a gas blow torch. I was looking forward to a great experience, but I was very disappointed. I did not complain to the manager because I didn't want to embarrass my colleagues, but thinking back, I probably should have at least very quietly said something to the wait staff."

"The food was mediocre and was not cooked as ordered. My veal was as if it had been microwaved for 3 minutes and a sauce poured over it. A good veternarian could have brought my entree back to life. The couple I was dining with had the same experience. I guess the cook makes all the decisions as to how you will get your food. The waitress assured me they had some "new" cooking method and that our rubbery-because-it-is-still-raw food was really cooked it just didn't look like it. Over-priced and when you get up the next day, your raw food will still not be digested. Avoid this place. It is a tourist trap. Go on Trip Advisor and read the reviews. You'll see others have had similar dissatisfying experiences."

"My wife and I decided to check this place out for Valentine's Day and we were not let down. We don't usually go out to places with this kind of price range, but since we had a night out without the kids, we decided to go all out. The service was excellent, we were never waiting for anything and the server checked in on us in between the food/drinks. The food itself was very good. I've never had anything like it or heard of some it before, but I loved all of it. I probably wouldn't visit too often just because our final tab was over 100 dollars, but for a special night out, I'd recommend this place to anyone willing to go somewhere classy."

"Nothing was bad; just nothing was special. In this price range, there are better places to go in Columbia. Ambiance was a little too casual to be considered a special occasion place. To start, the bread was stale. It had the texture of stale bread that was heated up to try to bring it back to life. I think it was suppose to be ciabatta, but it did not taste good. The cheese plate was pretty good, nice variety of cheeses. My appetizer on the other hand tasted like it was not very fresh. The entrees were okay but pretty plain and nothing that I couldn't have cooked up easily myself. The steak was on a bed of mashed potatoes with a 5 long green beans. Food needs a little more effort. Our waitress was very nice and efficient"

"The food was excellent. we were, however, disappointed in the service. We had a group of 6 and our age ranges from 24- 27. we didn't understand why the waitress or other waitors acted like they didn't want to please us. They really didn't mess anything up but they seemed almost irritated when we requested simple things like another refill. When we received our check I realized why the service might not have been that great- an 18% tip was included on the bill. I usually tip at least 20% but i was a little shocked to see a nice restaurant have an automatic tip with only 6 people and 18% at that. I feel like maybe our age and the auto tip made our servers not put in any extra effort. Disappointing service for 5 star food."
