"We had a nice meal at Spruce, but it could have been improved. Our waitperson was very friendly and helpful, but she was stretched too thin. There seemed to be a lot of kitchen people to bring out the food, but few actual waiters."

"I am always happy to find a Michelin starred restaurant that offers lunch so was looking forward to my reservation. The ambiance was a bit unexpected--dark woods, tan ostrich leather chairs paired with darker velvet loveseats: a late '90s decor feel--and the clientele seemed to be a ladies who lunch crowd. Kind of felt like a place my grandma might take me. I had the a carrot, fennel, and quinoa salad which was fresh but not especially flavorful, and the bavette steak entree which was tasty but tougher than others I have had. I am glad I went but especially in a city like San Francisco I was rather surprised that a place like this is still in business and thriving."

"Almost everything that we ordered was perfection. The one big bummer to our meal was the "field green"salad which was completely radicchio, a very bitter red lettuce. It had sort if a honey dressing to balance out the tartness of the lettuce, but it didn't work. 2 of us ordered it & didn't eat it. The waitress asked what was wrong & we told her. She didn't offer an alternative, nor did she take it off our bill). Nonetheless, I would revisit this place. The halibut was divine. The buratta salad was lovely."

"we arrived for an early lunch (just before 12:00) and while it was nearly empty when we arrived, it was very busy by the time we left. We enjoyed an amazing soup and a pasta course as well as a half bottle of wine. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. I saw a number of people ordering the burger for lunch, so I'm wondering if they know something I don't."

"For such an expensive restaurant we had a mixed experience. The service was amazing, almost over-the-top. The round table was certainly big enough for the 6 of us, but it's so wide and the room so large that it was hard to hear each other at times. The harvest salad came out over-salted - had to send it back. The bavette steak was a mystery. The waiter warned that it would be chewy, but one of us could hardly eat it. We wondered why such a fancy restaurant serves a tough piece of meat when there are more tender cuts available. The pressed chicken was delicious but small portion. The scallop appetizer was fantastic. The desserts were amazing - esp. the lemon pistachio tart. Birthday card and cake appreciated on this special day."

"We ordered one bottle of sparkling water with dinner.... however, unlike any other beverage, they kept filling our glasses without telling us we were being each time. When the bill arrived, $30 for water! What a rip off!

"Our Australian waiter provided exceptionally warm and attentive service. Gem of a guy. He was one of the highlights of our Spruce visit.
The food was very good. But because the portion sizes are designed to "pace one's satiety", they might come across to some as small. The one exception to this portion size restraint: the banana split dessert. It's a MEAL by itself."

"We live in LA. 5 years ago my wife threw me a surprise birthday party at Spruce. It was great. 2 years ago we popped in for lunch without a reservation. Again, a wonderful experience. The day before we flew to SF for Memorial Day weekend this year, we realized we hadn't made Friday night dinner plans. At the last minute we were able to get a 5:45 reservation at Spruce. Early? Yes, but happy to get in. They sat us in the private room in back. Just 4 tables. For a while, we were the only party (me, my wife, and our 2 adult sons). At first we felt a little isolated, but the quiet gave us a chance to enjoy conversation. Our server could not have been more knowledgeable or attentive. The food and wine were terrific. Love Spruce."

"Finding a great restaurant by Internet is an iffy proposition. I was looking for convenient location (off to the de Young after lunch), French food (or something like it) and open for lunch. Spruce's good web site answered all those questions admirably. Upon arrival, it was pleasurable to find a professional staff, well versed in menu and wine list, helpful but not intrusive, elegant understated ambience ( I want those gorgeous brown velvet drapes) and excellent food. Sign me up for a second visit!"

"Spruce was my girlfriend's favorite restaurant so I made reservations a couple weeks ago so that we could enjoy a romantic evening together. Food was absolutely fantastic as we had expected. We were pleased to find out some standard menu items could be modified to meet gluten-free needs. We enjoyed a beet/root salad and carrots 3 ways to start. Our entrees were out of this world. Halibut for her, bravette steak for me. We savored an amazing Zinfandel throughout."

"This was my 6th time at Spruce. Prior to this, I have had excellent experience at Spruce. This time, not so much. Our waiter, basically ignored us the entire time, and we ended up giving our order to the manager. She took care of us after we had to get up and go find her and explain to her that we hav enot even had our order staken one hout after we sat down. She was gracious and friendly. Also, 30 minutes into sitting, was when the Bread and butter arrived. The restaurant was only half full and there was nothing going on to explain why all table around us got served and we were not. This was truly a disappointing experience. I think they used to be a lot better, and they have definitely lost their touch"

"This was our second visit to Spruce, and the food has been great both times. Our server was very good, but the restaurant seemed understaffed. It took a long time to get our drinks, to get bread, and if you are refilling iced tea glasses, offer more ice. I think it just felt like there needed to be more help.
That said, the cheeseburger was one of the best I haver ever had. The beignets were also wonderful."

"My husband and I wanted to try a new SF restaurant during our weekend stay in the city. This place is delightful to say the least. They treat you like a king, and make you feel very special. At the same time, there is something very laid back about the place. It feels super comfy. When I think about it, it is probably the right amount of noise, perfect colors and lighting, wonderful service, chairs that would be good enough for royalty. And above all, the food is out of this world! Squash pasta appetizer with sage and caramelized pecans, Sonoma chicken and pork tenderloin, all delicious beyond words. Finally, we were impressed with their tea and coffee selection and quality. We skipped wine and dessert, but we'll definitely be back!"

"We were lucky to get a table for 8 on a Friday night. This really is a neighbourhood gem. Spruce oozes class. It's a restaurant that could compete on a world class level. The interior is beautiful. The food was wonderful. I had the burrata for starters, it was the perfect temperature and texture. Then on to the Duck breast which is quite possibly the best I've had. We tried the Brown wine, and the next day went out and bought it. Amazing. The only minor negative things were the desert - the banana split (yep we ordered for the table) or the bread weren't all that special. Spruce I'll be back. It was a fantastic evening."

"We were early for our reservation and were squeezed against a wall for 30 minutes waiting for our table. No one offered to bring us a drink. When we were finally seated service was incredibly slow. Shame because it is such a pretty restaurant with good food but perhaps because they are so popular they can be snobby at the reception desk and make you feel unwelcome."

"Although we were in a hurry to get to an event, we were treated warmly and given lots of surprise treats "from the chef" -- two small tastes of soup when only 1/3 ordered, cheese puffs for all, and at the end, hen there was no time for, dessert, three brownie bites. "The salmon was exceptionally well done! The flesh was so smooth, creamy, and soft and the skin so perfectly crisp - not the usual overly dried fish you typically get at American restaurants. Probably the best salmon I've had in the city! The only dish I was neutral about was the black cod wrapped in kale. The textures were pleasing but the flavors there were unremarkable. But aside from that, I can wax rhapsodic about the beet soup and pomelo mousse. Lovely presentations, flavors, aromas, textures. And the lunch pre-fixe is a phenomenal deal."
