"What a lovely resturaunt, and just a few blocks from our home! We've driven by it many times, but it's tucked away and we never noticed it. But I'm sure glad we found it on Open Table! It was quiet and romantic, the wait staff was knowledgable and friendly. The food was delicious. We ordered Prime Rib for Two. The chef came out with the meat and carved it tableside, which was a very nice touch."

"Even though the building is beautiful and it is in a great neighborhood, the food leaves a lot to be desired. The menu sounded great on paper, but not in execution. The gnocchi and the bread were for the highlights of the meal. But the salad was highly acidic and my entree (as well as my husband's) was super salty. I really wanted to like this spot but unless they improve the quality (and salt level) of the food, we will most likely not be back. Kudos to the manager though that comp'd my salad after I told him that I did not like it. A nice manager deserves and equally nice restaurant and that needs to start in the kitchen."

"This was some of the best food in Evanston. The meat was really flavorful and tender and the service was great. We were happy with each of our server's recommendations. The dessert (molten chocolate cake) was small and nothing extraordinary, but the rest of the meal more than made up for it."

"This is fine Italian dining at its best. From the Chef/Owner preparing pasta tableside (in a hollowed out giant wheel of Parmiagiana/Reggiano cheese no less) to the best gnocchi any of us had ever tasted, this was a top of the line foodie experience. Each of the four main courses (venison, duck, lamb, and salt-encrusted sea bass) were prepared perfectly. The service was outstanding as well. The waiter overheard two of us deciding to share soup and salad and then, without comment, brought us each a plate with the portions already divided. We will definitely go back."

"I have many food allergies and my waiter and the chef worked with me on what I was able to eat. Many times after I go through my list of allergies when ordering at a restaurant I am anxious I will end up having a reaction because it seems I was not taken seriously. Not the case here. I felt comfortable and safe after placing my order. They made some adjustments in what accompanied my meal. The food was fabulous. I had the best Beef Tenderloin Medallions I have EVER tasted. Took some Italian cookies home from the dessert menu. Those were fabulous as well. I will definitely be going back. Thank you!!!"

"This is a beautiful restaurant and the staff could not have been more accommodating, but the food was overpriced for the quality and taste. There was nothing wrong with the food, just nothing special, either. We came for a special occasion and ordered a cake for $40 that turned out to be a store bought $10 cake. We were told to expect a cake baked by the chef. I will not be going back......"

"This is a beautiful space -- intimate without feeling confined. Ideal for a romantic dinner. Service was very attentive and friendly, and well as particularly knowledgeable about the menu. Too many dishes to describe here but everyone at our table was pleased with their meal. Everyone also appreciated the choice of a full or a taste size on the dessert menu. (Creme brulee was a bit heavy but the chocolate cake was a big hit.)"

"I took my fiance here for Valentine's Day. We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation but they sat us down promptly. I did not see a bar available so I would definitely recommend getting reservations. I had looked at the menu prior but it turned out that they had a Special four course meal selection for Valentine's Day that was pretty amazing. The portions were perfect and the flavors were spectacular. Perfect place to have a nice quiet dinner with a special someone. Our waiter Ruben was very attentive and extremely informative. The wine list was great and the quality was even better (I highly recommend the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Carpineto $70 bottle). I will definitely return."

"We had never heard of Va Pansiero, but got a groupon coupon to use and decided to try it for Valentines Day. What a find! The lighting was low, but enough so I could see the food on my plate. I noticed that all the tables in our dining room were for couples, so the noise level was really nice for our romantic dinner. We loved the history of the building. Service was quick and all our table staff was considerate and polite, but they were not intrusive. We'll be back again!"

"This was a real let down after a wonderful first experience at Va Pensiero. Our Valentine Day special of porterhouse for two was just fair at best. Several pieces that had been carved were inedible due to the gristle which was quite obvious. We tried a couple of mini-desserts and were presented with some MICRO servings which were too small to share even a bite. The tiramisu was also sub par having a texture of a heavy cake and basically flavorless. A restaurant should not have the variation in quality we experienced in visits. We raved about our initial visit only to be deeply disappointed in our Valentine's Day return."

"We really enjoyed the pre fixe Valentine's Day menu. Excellent selections and we each really liked what we had, particularly the chestnut porcini soup and the lobster bisque. The fixed menu allowed the servers to keep everyone happy and all of the food arrive hot and properly prepared. Very thoughtful wine list was provided, including several half bottles which allowed my wife and me to have both white and red with our meal. The desserts were also very good. It is nice to enjoy a quiet, elegant room with good service and fine food."

"This place wss so romantic and cozy. They even played jazz music live with a singer, she was fabulous! The food was fantastic! The only thing I didn't like about it was the price. It was kind of pricy and the portion was not generous. The three of us used the groupon so the bill was taken $50 off. But it's still over $100. Granted we opened a bottle but the $38 bottle was the cheapest I could find on the wine list. I would still recommend the place though but be prepared to pay!"

"VP is hidden jem on a quiet street in Evanston. The dinning room is warm and friendly. Service was great and the food was even better...individual ingredients can be ordered from the 15 ingredient Antipasto salad memu, prosciutto is highly recommended. The grilled Calamari was spectacular, very smokey (make sure you are a grilled fan!!) and authentic! Our pasta course was prepared table side and tossed in a hollowed out Reggiano Parmeson cheese wheel....creamy beyond words....main courses included salt encrusted whole fish, deboned table side. Seasoned inside and out with fresh herbs in a light white wine/olive oil saucue, awesome. The lamb dish was made to perfection. Dessert included crepes prepared table side. Wine list is fab!"

"The menu was creative and food was very good. The food is expensive, but well priced. The autumn roasted vegetable salad and braised lamb were both amazing. The lobster ravioli was good, but the spicy sauce was too overpowering and you lost many of the flavors. The desserts were fabulous. I really liked the mini portions to sample a few. Service was impeccable. I would recommend this place. The only knock on the restaurant was the music, MUSAK really. Hard not to feel like you are in an elevator with bad instrumentals of unchained melody and memories from CATS playing slightly too loudly. Seriously need to update the music. Come on?"

"The major disappointment I had was that the wine list at the restaurant was nothing like that on-line. Of course, a few bottles may not be available because you've run out, but this is a case where the wine list at the restaurant looked nothing like that on-line. It was very disappointing and, arguably, deceptive.

The restaurant is not particularly well-marked and, unless you know the side streets of Evanston well, not particularly easy to get to."

"This is a wonderful restaurant in many ways. First of all the food is first class. I had a duck breast and my partner had a sea bass baked in a crust of salt. Presentation and side dishes were wonderful too. A chef personally served the sea bass and after the salt crust was broken he saw immediately that the fish was undercooked and took it back to the kitchen. A waiter may have not made the same decision for us. This is a place for conversation. The acoustics are like no other in the Chicago area.It's a large place, but no shouting is required. The tables are spaced comfortably and you do not feel crowded in.It is pricey and not for everyday, but do not hesitate to go there & spend the $$ when you have it.You won't be disappointed."

"Nice ambiance for the NYE prix fixe. Liked the decorations, and coat check at the door was nice. The shaved chestnut, porcini mushroom soup was brilliant. I was worried the chestnuts would just derail the whole dish for me since I'm not such a fan of them, but the combo worked, and I wish I could slurp that stuff every other cold winter night.

The beef tenderloin was tender and portioned nicely. I was left craving any variation of potatoes though, as it was served atop a bed of uber bland mascarpone polenta. It's hard to go wrong with any dessert dubbed Chocolate, Chocolate, and More Chocolate.

I'll be back!"

"Unfortunately, we did not stay. Once we got their it was descovered that they had a special diner planned for Christmas Eve and that it was more of a picked menue only serving fish. Many other folks there were in the same situation as us and did not know what was going on. It was a mess and a challenge since it was Christmas eve and we had to find an alternative location to eat.I am dissapointed that it was not made clear of the situation."

"We were a group of 11 for new years eve at Va Pensiero. The food was fantastic and great value for money. The crowd was a little older than we expected, and although the live jazz band was good, the singer was a disaster. She killed every song. The party favors and free champagne were all great touches to new years celebrations. I wish the place was a bit more energetic (the countdown was a bit flat).
For the food and wonderful service we would definitely go back."

"This place is amazing. Food is great, and reasonably good value for the money. Service is excellent, but the kitchen is slow. Well worth the wait, but don't come starving, or in a hurry."

"Va Pensiero is always a fine experience for us. We went for the Christmas Eve special meal, and were not disappointed. Traditional feast of 5 fishes, with wine pairings, preceded by a convivial reception in the lovely vintage living room of the bed and breakfast hotel, in which Va Pensiero resides - it felt like the Christmas party at the home of Scrooge's nephew...just grand."

"The food was excellent. Servers were not as attentive as we would have liked. Sometimes we had to ask twice. One of our guests had pasta, but was not offered any cheese from the parmesan wheel. The regular size tiramisu, whole very tasty, was miniscule--not much bigger than a marshmellow and certainly not worth the price. We mentioned it to the waiter and he just shrugged. Why didn't he at least offer to bring a mini piece?"

"The restaurant is in an old inn, and you feel like you're dining in someone's home. Lots of character - the carpeting is a bit worn and and while sitting in the dining room, it's like time has stood still. And it continues to feel that way, as you wait...and wait...and wait for someone - anyone - to come to the table. Dinner took over 2 1/2 hours, and every dish was lukewarm. The fish was so salty that my husband's lips turned white. On the upside, the server was nice enough to accomodate our daughter's request for plain pasta, the warm foccacia was delicious (and offered to us twice). Not enough to merit a return visit, though. Life is too short."

"We received a gift certificate as a gift, otherwise we could not have afforded to eat here. However, the food portions and the quality are worth every penny. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful, from the gentleman who took our coat, to the host, to the waiter to the man refilling our water and bread. I had the calamari appetizer, which was unbelievable! Definitely felt like I was back in Italy. The risotto was delicious but a rich for me. My husband hesitating ordering the lamb. Being Greek he is very particular about his lamb. However, the waiter recommended it and it was fabulous! I wish I could remember our waiter's name because he was exceptional and I would like to sing his praise. Thank you very much!"

"We were visitors from out of town using the Zagat guide.The cuisine was superb and the service unbelievably attentive.The room was reasonably full with guests, but quiet so my wife and I could talk.What a delightWe certainly will dine there again."

"Va Pensiero is always a wonderful experience. My wife and I celebrated the 20th anniversary of our first date, and the manager was thoughtful enough to print special menus for us that included a congratulatory note and offered us a complimentary drink. The menu is varied and everything we've tried has been superb. The setting is elegant, yet comfortable. The servers are attentive with visits to the table well-timed. This is our favorite restaurant, particularly for special occasions."

"Surpringly good because I hadn't heard about it before. Found it thru Open Table.
Very good service and excellent food with an interesting twist by the chef.
I'd recommnend it.
Also, I mentioned it was my wife's birthday when making the resrvation and they printed menus with a birthday greeting and served dessert with a small birthday candle!
Nice touch!"

"This restaurant blows us away every time. The food is fresh, flavorful and inventive. The vegetable tart is outstanding, and frankly, will ruin you for other tarts! We love that they split everything for us (without being asked) when we told them we were sharing all of our dishes. This place is real value--the execution of the dishes is outstanding. Also great is the dessert option; they have mini-versions of every dessert for half-price, which allows you to taste more of these fabulous creations. Finally, we're not vegetarians, but their vegetarian options are truly exceptional. What a find! Even a simple sounding pasta dish of parm, spaghetti, pancetta and breadcrumbs astounds! We will be back soon!"

"The best part about this place is the atmosphere. It's definitely special. I didn't love my food but my husband did. I thought the pumpkin soup was too heavy on the spice and my fish was bland (unseasoned) and tasted way fishier than I was expecting. My husband made better choices and really enjoyed his food. We ordered a moderately priced bottle of wine and really liked it. As we were leaving we realized that we could have brought our own wine and paid a corkage fee. That would have been fun to do. We would definitely go back with friends. It's fairly quiet so everyone could hear the conversation. The service was very good also."

"We arrived for a special dinner with two family members celebrating birthdays. The service was pleasant but disorganized; several times during the evening one or more of us was brought an item we had not ordered, or not brought an ordered item when the rest of the table was served that course. The waiters were gracious about correcting the errors, but errors kept happening. We were also a bit disappointed at how noisy the room was. Our prior experiences here were on weekday evenings; on the Saturday night when we dined there the noise level was so high that we often could't hear people across our table. The noisiness may have contributed to the service errors, perhaps they just couldn't hear our orders. The food was quite good, though"
