Bluehour
Bluehour means different things to different people. In French literature it describes any time of day "of heightened emotion." In Portland it has come to mean "a great place to dine."
As the premier modern restaurant in the Pearl District, Bluehour opened its doors in 2000, with what Gourmet Magazine describes as, "the most sophisticated, contemporary food in town." Guests choose between the elegant dining room or the casual café and bar.
Simple, delicious and classic describes the Mediterranean cuisine we create in the Bluehour kitchen each night. The menu is printed daily, but Bluehour standards remain, like the pillowy potato gnocchi with black truffle and the perfectly seared, bacon wrapped sea scallops. Our cheese cart is among the finest on the West Coast, featuring regional and international artisan cheeses.

"The bar at Bluehour has a great menu.... However the restaurant is very limited on its changing menu. You can NOT have any of the food or drinks from the bar menu if you are sitting on the other side of the curtain that separates the bar from the restaurant. The hostess on 5-18-2013 was rude & pretentious. I recommend the bar. But, the restaurant felt like they were trying way to hard to make it uppity."

"The last time I went to Bluehour was years ago and I was really curious how things changed . Unfortunately the experience was not that great. Cocktails are tiny,my main course was barely warm but the biggest disappointment was service . Our plates were left in a table, 45 min wait for the started and 30 min for the main course while our waiter was walking around and chatting .... I expected more from this establishment . Hardly the best spot in Portland ..."

"My wife and I had an absolutely outstanding dinner before a play at the Portland Center Stage. A wonderful appetizer of very lightly done fritto mista with halibut cheeks and broccoli, main dish of perfectly done panseared petrale sole over some asparagus and small potatoes, and for dessert a flourless chocolate torte topped with "butter flavored popcorn" ice cream, no less! A light, very good and reasonably priced nebbiolo wine accompanied our dinner. A perfect early dinner on a very pleasant spring evening and then a short walk to the theater!"

"I've been going to Blue Hour since they opened years ago and it keeps getting better. However, to match the ambiance and prices, the service should be more attentive since the disappearing server is often the case here. There was also a long gap between courses and we had to beg for a piece of bread from the roving bread guy (whatever happened to just giving you a basket of bread)? But the food was very good, despite the portions being small. I want to love this place (because I love the vibe) so hope they keep improving."

"The potato & leek soup was good, halibut cheeks appetizer was tasty but I was disappointed by the main dinner menu. I am a foodie but was disappointed that there was no halibut, salmon or crab on the menu - NW food basics. I had the Black Cod and it was ok but certainly not outstading, my business associate from Atlanta was disappointed he could not get fresh NW salmon. Service was excellent but toss the rabbit off the menu and add some salmon, etc."

"We had a delightful and enjoyable evening at Bluehour. Our table for 5 was a perfect round size. The service was very attentive but at a nice pace. The halibut check appetizer was fantastic. The Tardiva salad was a fresh NW style salad with a nice touch with the addition of crisp egg. The entrees were all excellent, from the sole, to the pasta, to the rabbit loin. The desserts were a perfect end to our meal. Two of us shared a Pinot as recommended by our waiter and was a nice complement to our meal. To be honest I was also quite pleased by the moderate price of the meal for 5 that included wine and drinks. Highly recommend for groups of 4 to 6."

"I took two clients to lunch at Bluehour recently and was disappointed. The menu is very limited and uninspiring. My guests remembered fondly the Cobb Salad that used to be on the menu and, according to our server, was very popular -- but it is no longer available. It was hard for us to find anything on the menu that sounded appealing. Finally, I ordered spaghetti, one client ordered soup and a 1/2 Caesar salad, and the other a chicken salad. Not very interesting at all and when the food arrived is was not very good. I really felt badly, embarrassed actually, and promised in a phone call later to make it up to them with lunch somewhere else soon."

"The crab and endive salad was first rate, using only Dungeness crab, The grouper is such a mild fish that it's flavor was lost n the accompaniments. The "rib of the ribeye" was perfectly prepared and delicious.
We keep coming back to Bluehour because of consistently good good, great ambience and exceedingly attentive wait staff. Bluehour is a great choice for a special occasson dinner, but also as a spur of the moment decision, which will tun am am otherwise normal evening into one that is memorable."

"Ambiance was good, but when we arrived the restaurant was quite empty. It took an hour and a half for our food to be prepared. My wife's steak was ordered medium well and was served charred and crispy. The steak was so tough she could not eat all of it. At a price of $40 I expected the steak to be prepared better. This restaurant cost is high overall and I would expect the service level to be communsurate with the prices charged."

"The service was the best that I can remember ever having from any restaurant. At one point my daughter laughed because while our group was in animated conversation, she noticed five different arms reaching over our table, refilling water, delivering drinks, placing down rolls, taking away dishes, and delivering dessert menus. All of this went on while only one person in our group of five realized that there was an octopus serving us, so unobtrusive were our servers. I look forward to visiting Bluehour again."

"We had been to Bluehour before, but I had forgotten just how amazing the food was, and how reasonable the prices are for a high-end restaurant. We were there for a birthday dinner. The specialty cocktails were fantastic. The entrees were cooked perfectly (if you like fish, you have to try the grouper). She had a great birthday and loved the wine that was recommended. All in all a great experience and we will definitely be going back!"

"I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend and two of her friends. When we arrived we were in awe of how great the restaurant looked. It had a very nicely laid out environment with enough space between each table. The waiter and waitresses were very attentive filling the water glasses and making sure you had enough to drink. The cheese plate we got was spectacular and we enjoyed all of the three tastings that we purchased. But that is where the night started to go down, the main course was a little bland for both myself and my girlfriend. The dessert was nice but not over the top wow so we felt that if we had just purchased a cheese plate and a glass of wine we would have enjoyed the night just as much."

"The food was wonderful and the portions were the right size. I could eat the entire meal and be sated without that overfull feeling. The wait staff were all very friendly and professional. The only complaint I have is that we arrived about 10 minutes early for our 7:30 reservations, told the host we were there and went to sit in the bar area. The host completely forgot us and several other couples that came in after us who also had 7:30 reservations were seated. It was Valentine's day and very busy so its an understandable mistake."

"They had a fixed Valentine menu that was not mentioned when making the reservation, would have been nice to know. Mentioned it was my 25th anniversary and asked for a nice table, we were in the middle of the restaurant 1 foot on each side was another table. Had a gentleman arranged to sing our wedding song at the table they would not let him in. i would not return to this restaurant, wife and I eat out 1-2 times a week. El Goucho, Ruths Crist, Mortons all are much better."

"This was my first time at Bluehour and I was excited to finally try it. I was the first to arrive and was promptly greeted and seated. As my party began to arrive, we enjoyed delicious drinks. Several of us started with the beet salad which we really enjoyed. The main course is where service fell apart. We were a party of six in which 3 ordered pasta and 3 ordered pork. The 3 pork dishes and 2 shrimp pasta dishes came out together, however I had 9 pieces of shrimp to my friends 3 and our sixth dinner guest received no pasta dinner! He had to wait quite a while & when it came it was a paltry portion. Not impressed."

"All seafood dishes were executed flawlessly, especially the scallops which had a nice crust but they were not overcooked. The sides were also well seasoned and paired well. My main dish, the pork chop was very dry. The deserts were very bold and clearly stood out. As a general note, the menu is quite classic and not too adventurous, which is also reflected in the age of the clientele."

"Not my favorite Portland restaurant. Chilly inside. They need to cover the outside doors so when people arrive the cold air doesn't blast in. Two of the people I dined with ordered the pork, it was dry. Neither liked it much. My sole was good, but most of the food we ordered was unspectacular."

Service was slow -- the bread didn't arrive until just before the entres -- and the place wasn't busy. The food seemed very ordinary. "Bluehour White wine was perfect. The roasted beet salad and the arugula and endive salad were delicious and refreshing. The potato gnocchi and the razor clams tasted amazing. The shrimp in the spaghetti was flavorful and tasty, but the flavor of the noodles seemed a little bland. Unfortunately, service was slow and seemed more superficial, rather than warm and natural and matching the ambiance of the restaurant."

"Very disappointing. 6 of us seated promptly. The wine guy was very friendly and efficient with the wine we brought with us. Cocktail orders were taken and delivered quickly. We ordered salads and the entrees. Then, we waited. And waited. It was nearly an hour before the salads/starter courses came out. It was close to another half an hour after finishing the starters when the entrees came out. Three steaks ordered medium rare came out well done and cold. The sturgeon was beautifully cooked, but very, very salty.
The manager comped the steaks which we greatly appreciated. Other than the unreasonably long wait for the food, the service was very good.
Is the heyday of Bluehour over? We were very disappointed."
