Bella's notorious homemade pasta, cozy & inviting atmosphere and friendly service await you. We feature cusine from Southern Italia- slow cooked sugos, braised meats and various carpaccios.
"I had the house special lasagne. The noodles were thin and perfectly cooked. The waiter, when he described it, said that meat sauce was slowly cooked for seven hours. My wife had the hanger steak. She likes rare steak and it was also perfectly cooked.
This was our first time at Bella Trattoria and we'll definitely return."

"Great restaurant, food, ambiance, service, etc. If there was one drawback, it is the noise, but come to think of it we were probably the ones making most of it so 5 stars all the way! :)"

"They are known for their home-made gnocchi, which are indeed very good and the sauce was terrific. However, the warm spinach salad was much too salty. I think I was looking for a different Italian restaurant - more rustic. This is very classy and fairly expensive, Service is excellent."

"Wonderful food in an unlikely location (Geary at 3rd). Cheerful service, very reasonable prices, and a cozy, surprisingly quiet room make Bella a restaurant that goes on "the permanent rotation" (meaning we'll go back repeatedly."

"Heard about this restaurant through the TV show, Check Please! Outstanding food. Very fresh and very authentic Italian food. Service was excellent. The table next to us starting talking with us and we ended up sharing ideas for other restaurants to try.
Drinks were very good as well. Very thoughtful waitstaff. The even gave us a complementary dessert to share at the table! Could not have been more perfect."

"There is nothing not to love about this place. All the staff is fun and friendly. The dark atmosphere is awesome and the homemade pasta is the best I have had. I also dig their wine list. Will come back as much as I can."

"Great neighborhood restaurant, casual, where the locals go. Nice italian menu with nightly specials. Food well prepared, great taste, nice portion sizes, will try and accommodate your personal preference. Service very good, friendly. Proprietor usually present and visiting tables to be sure you are enjoying your dining experience. Reservations recommended as always busy. Definitely eat here every trip to San Francisco."

"We were in town for a half marathon and wanted to carbo load before the race - what better than pasta? We ordered the Lasagna and the Mushroom Risotto. The Lasagna was delicious! The Risotto was a little richer than I'm used to, but very tasty. We also ordered salads which were nothing special - just greens with a few slices of blood orange. The greens were very bitter, so the oranges helped make it interesting, but not enough to make it tasty.
All in all, it was a nice dinner."

"I have been here twice in the last month. I love the ambience and the food is good. However, both times, we were kept waiting for our table for 10 - 15 mins, although there were empty tables. The meal service was very slow. When I commented to the maitre d'/head waiter that it seemed like they were short staffed, he said "not at all", so they obviously don't think there is a problem. I will not go back, which is too bad, as there is a shortage of non-asian restaurants in this neighborhood."

"Bella Trattoria is the real Italian deal. I used to live in Italy and most of the spots in SF just dont do it for me. There were no frills, plates included were typical Italian (not california-italian) and waiters speak Italian. Great spot. Get the pasta."

"Really friendly service. Our server introduced himself by name at the beginning AND end of the service. The one thing that he forgot was to tell us the special dish of the evening and what fish was being served as the Catch of the Day."

"Cozy, homey kind of place. Food (for most in our party) was good and our waiter hard-working. Unfortunately, however, we were seated nearly 30 minutes after our reservation time (and alternately asked to stand outside in the cold or to hover near the party that wasn't leaving). Equally disappointing was when one in our party who is avoiding carbs tried to order Osso Bucco (it comes with polenta and brussel sprouts) without the polenta. After the chef urged him to order steak instead, he next received a lecture about the "dish being brought together by the polenta" and incredibly, that "the sauce was in the polenta" and couldn't be poured over the meat and brussel sprouts. Result= dry Osso Bucco and brussel sprouts, served begrudgingly..."

"We always have a lovely meal at Bella Trattoria. The service is great - everyone makes you feel very welcome. More important, the food is great quality and for home made pasta, this is an outstanding restaurant. The pappardelle with ragu was perfectly cooked and my husband's gnocchi were like little pillows - soft texture (not chewy) with a tasty and complex red sauce. We enjoy the little extras the kitchen sends out - this time an amuse bouche with olive tapenade and zucchini! For dessert we shared some biscotti and coffee which was a nice way to end the evening."

"It is definitely a local gem of a restaurant. Small and intimate. We had a 5:30 seating on a Friday so the parking was a little challenging. Give ypurself and extra 15 minutes to find parking. The pasta was excellent and they had a very good wine list. We brought our own wine. Corkage was $15. The tirimasu was a nice finishing touch to our meal."

"We enjoyed the relaxed feel of Bella, dark but not too dark, small but with enough space to feel comfortable and not crowded and cozy. We definitely would return to try more dishes. The mixedlettuce salad was fresh and very tasty. We had the antipasto platter to start and enjoyed everything on it except for the eggplant which was on the bland side. My mother and I shared a pizza which was just the right size and very tasty. My husband had the rigatoni with sausage and loved it! Service was very friendly, and the free dessert along with the one we purchased was a very nice touch for first timers. We will be back!"

"We usually come away from dinner feeling very satisfied. However, this evening's dinner was a disappointment for 50% of a group of 4. The servers appeared somewhat disorganized (they brought wrong dish and the bill was incorrect). I found the béchamel sauce too rich and too heavy for the linguine e gamberi. Our friend found the carbonara not creamy enough. I will of course return, but not too soon."

"Bella is our favorite neighborhood haunt. Cozy but lively, sophisticated but not stuck up, it is always our go to place for the best carbonara in the City, the nicest wait staff you will find, and the most inventive italian food. Good for family dinners or a romantic dinner for two, it feels just like home."

The food arrived hot and the service was attentive fast and warm and helpful. The main courses were also delicious and interesting I tried three different ones and they were all very tasty. Last was desert and again tried three different ones and would have them again. Interesting menu , great service. I would recommend this restaurant very highly."

"We weren't expecting a pre-fixe menu. That would have been fine, but the overall quality and quantity of the food didn't even remotely match the price we ended up paying for the meal ($200+ for two people). The only highlight was the gnocchi, which was fantastic."

"OUTSTANDING entrees, from home made pasta (squid ink with seafood, orecchhiette, taglietelle) to a perfectly cooked special boned trout with sauteed spinach! New pizza oven makes crisp light pizzas that are great to share as an appetizer, or go for the meatballs. Sparkling prosecco kicks off the evening, and friendly service makes you feel welcomed to this small but outstanding Italian restaurant."

"The food was great, and service was very fast, but not rushed. We were a party of 12, with friends visiting from Japan, and they were very impressed with the whole dinner. THE best Squid Ink Pasta I've had to date! The pasta was cooked to just the right aldente, and the sauce was not too salty, like I've had at other places."

"My girlfriend and I checked in on-time for our reservation at 8:15. After a few minutes another couple checked in for an 8:15 reservation and were directed to the bar. Then a group of 4 checked in, they were each given a complimentary glass of champagne and then told to go next door and someone would call them when there table was ready. We felt extremely ignored while everyone else around us seemed to get great service and communication. Eventually we were seated 20 minutes later with a very annoyed and bad taste in our mouth. All we would've wanted is the heads up on the delay and the opportunity to have a drink rather than standing on top of people finishing their meal..."
