312 Chicago proudly supports the Green City Market and local farms dedicated to community-based sustainable agriculture, organic farming and naturally raised livestock. Our chefs serve contemporary and traditional Italian dishes using seasonal, locally grown ingredients. Our extensive wine collection, featuring more than 200 American and Italian wines, is displayed throughout the restaurant and in our private dining rooms. "I entertained clients before going to the theatre next door. Our reservation was ready.
Our waitress was very helpful with suggestions and alternatives. Didn't quite like the Calamari appetizer. Dinner for all four of us was excellent. Service was great. We had 4-6 people bringing in food, replenishing beverages, cleaning away plates, yet non were intrusive. Even the manager stepped in to help when necessary. All the while, our waitress made sure everything flowed. I will come back again. Fairly priced also. It was easy to leave a generous tip."

"When we were in the restaurant, there were only a few tables occupied. My wife and I both ordered the prix fixe dinner with a talapia entree, and split two first courses to be served as an appetizer and then salad. After we had finished the salad, one hour after we arrived, our server informed us that the chef was out of talapia, but could do the same preparation with swordfish. We accepted the offer and the swordfish was quite good. The manager bought our first wine service and then brought a second. It turned out well, but I can't accept that we weren't told the talapia was 86'd until more than half an hour after we ordered it. If it was there when we ordered it, it should have been served to us; if not, tell us right away."

"years ago my wife and i were at the theather and ate at this resturant and enjoy it == that is way we booked it again not true this time

i seem to think it will be a very long time before we come back as the prices have driven us away == a half glass wine $13.00 == the food was fine but as i said the resturant was emty maybe 4 to 5 tables our bill was $135.00 and by no means was it a o my g-d dinner"

"Overall pleasant experience. Mushroom soup was a delight. Had their organic mixed greens salad with a sweet vinagrette dressing that made me for the first time in many years not require me to add fresh gound pepper on my salad. That was impressive."

"Working downtown, I walk by this place every day but since I'm not usually in the city at night-I've never had a chance to have dinner here. My wife & I had dinner there before a show at the Cadillac Palace on Sat Feb 27. We were greeted warmly by the front staff, the table service was attentive & knowledgable. A great cozy space downtown with a terrific city/street view. The food was excellant. We had a couple of off-menu specials that were superb! For desert, try the homemade cookies, just enough after a good meal! If your going to a show downtown, I can think of no better place before or after! A gem!"

"Our order was goofed up but they deducted the amount from the bill so that was good. Our grandsons were not liking the chicken tenders much since they were very large and not at all what they are used to. I would not exactly call their food kid friendly.

"The appetizers were really good which made us believe the food would be even better. The dinner wasn't really good, and the portions were very small for the price we paid. My food was extremely salty, I couldn't even eat it. My boyfriend's pasta looked like it came from a an 8 minute instant meal box. The food came as soon as we ordered it which was a tell-tell sign that it wasn't good. I would never come back to place unless I was just ordering the appetizers. The scenery was fantastic and the location was good."

"The vegetable panini was disappointing. Overly thick cuts of underdone grilled vegetables were slapped on soggy ciabatti bread. The dish needed something to bind everything together -- perhaps cheese or a pesto or aioli sauce. The side was a giant handful of mixed greens -- should have been half the amount more artfully arranged."

"We did the prix fixe w/wine pairing on the Friday of Valentines day weekend......it was extremely reasonable and both food and wine choices were very good. "This gets my vote as one of the best places for a business lunch in Chicago's government district on the northwest corner of the Loop.

The upscale Italian-based cuisine is perfectly seasoned and tasty with portions that are more than adequate for even the heartiest eater.

The ambiance on either level of the two-tiered restaurant is excellent for holding a conversation and the tables are large enough for note-taking over coffee and dessert after the main meal is cleared away."

"The menu was skimpy compared to the wine list, which went on for pages and pages. "312 is a good place to eat before the theater. The food is very good and the chef made adjustments to preparations to accommodate our tastes. The salads were GREAT.
The ambiance was okay, but we were seated next to the upper floor emergency exit that was used quite regularly by staff. It was a bit annoying.
Service was average. While the waiter was nice, there wasn't the usual bustle or purposeful efficiency one sees in better restaurants. The staff plodded through their duties."

"I had a wonderful time on valentine's day with my girlfriend. The food was absolutly amazing and the valentine's day menu was specutacular. This was my first time there. The food and wine was priceless and very inexpensive. $180 for two, plus a a beautiful dinner, resturant, and great service. I would recommend this place to anyone. I only eat at italian resturants and this is hands down ONE OF THE BEST IN CHICAGO. Puts Spaggio, Carmines, etc to shame."

"From the beginning we were rushed to order due to the perfarmance at the theater at 7:30 pm. We arrived at 5:30 and were told to order immediately. We held out to try to relax a bit but finally gave in a bit after 6. We ordered a 2nd drink which took approximately 20 minutes to arrive. The food came within 10 minutes of ordering. This was a fast food experience with fine dining prices. The food was mediocre and over seasoned. I have dined before theater tix before and have never been rushed like this. Typically you are asked if you are going to the show and the waiter makes sure things are timed right. They usually will warn against ordering some items that take longer since the kitchen will be backed up. Will not go again."

"As I ever never been before I took a gamble and took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day and it was fantastic! We arrived early for our reservations so we went to the bar for a drink where we were greeted by the most upbeat and knowledgeable bartender I have encountered in a very long time...and I go out A LOT. The drinks were incredible and the matradee was kind enough to locate us when our table was ready; he even carried our drinks to the table for us. Both of us made selections from the special Valentine's Day menu and neither one of us were disappointed with a single selection. The pre-selected wine pairings were superb and complimented the food very well. the scallops were the standout dish of the night, they were incredible!"

"The food was the about star of this restaurant. That is as it should be, but the service and the overall decor of the place do not rise to the level of the food, which is a bit of a negative. Regarding the service, one of us had a 3-course dinner with wine pairings, but we had to ask for the first glass ! Also our cocktails were late in arriving. But the food, the food! It was exciting and memorable. We would definitely recommend it."

"My wife and I like to try new places and never go to the same place twice. After visiting 312 Chicago we agreed that we should definitly dine their again. I was a bit sceptical because I had flowers delivered to the restaurant and they were right on the table when we arrived..A+++++. On top of that the service was fantastic, and the food was great. "I had reservations Valentines Day night and was seated at the "governors table". There was a rose upon arrival for the lady, service was very prompt and a very professional staff. "312 Chicago offers an excellent dining experience. Standard menu items are interesting and thoughtfully prepared. The special offerings are unique and intriguing - and always a taste treat. The Valentine's Weekend Menu offered four courses with four options in each for $50 or with wine parings for $65. It was hard to decide between all the interesting choices. The result was a delicious and varied dinner."

"Maybe our waitress was having an off night, but the service was incredibly poor. She would abandon us for long periods of time, forgot our request for the pre-fixe theatre menu, forgot an entire salad, an failed to notice when the wine had run out and we were ready to order more. We had nearly two hours before our show (right next door at Cadillac Palace), but due to the abysmal service were almost late."

"We only had wine and salad because meal arrived at 7:20 p.m. - ten minutes beforethe theatre began. Not enough time to eat and we sent it back and left. We waited over 40 minutes for our entree and the staff knew we were attending the theatre. I've eaten at 312 before and it always has been a great dining experience with great service. I know they were swamped but we shouldn't have been assured by the maitre d that we would make it to the theatre on time - we arrived at 6:20 due to the snow storm."

"All was delightful with the exception of the greeter who could not find the reservation. Eventually she said she found it but I wasn't convinced. I believe she just got us a table because I had a confirmation number. At any rate, this, of course, ended not to be a problem. The food was excellent. If I am in the theater district again I will return."

"We went to 312 before a show at the Cadillac so we understood that it would be a little on the busier side. However, we barely saw our waiter throughout our meal. We waited a good 15 - 20 minutes just to place our order. The food was just satisfactory, nothing that would make me want to come back. It wasn't horrible but it certainly wasn't great either."

"Sunday brunch menu was very limited and not very exciting. We expected a few more options for lunch and breakfast-type items. The two dishes we tried were beautifully prepared and served hot from the kitchen. Service was slow after we received our meals. We would have ordered another cocktail, but the waiter didn't return to our table until we were done with both meals. I then ordered coffee and the same slow service, waiter didn't return to see if I wanted a refill."

"The service was very good. We were seated immdiately. The sever paid attention to our table to see when our late 3rd party arrived. I thought that was commendable. The appetizer was excellent (baked goat cheese and zucchini). Our entrees were somewhat tasty, but nothing to get excited about. We were seated in the rear and I had to move the table to get out of the way of the constant staff traffic. 312 is okay, but I would no rush to return a 3rd time. They need better entree selections."

"Four of us dined at 312 before a show at the Chicago Theatre. The young lady at the door was friendly and charming. The manager was very attentive. I had the potatoe dumplings (gnocchi?) which were the best i've had in years. Everyone else enjoyed their meals as well after some great recommendations from our server, Peter. Desserts were outstanding. Will definitely be back."

"We like this restaurant not only for atmosphere and food, but because of its proximity to the Cadillac Palace Theater, located just around the corner. It makes dining there optimal since you can have a leisurely meal and be at the theater in literally five minutes. There is a more pronounced Italian flavor with the arrival of their new chef du cuisine, but it provides opportunities for some new Italian specialties not previously offered. Many wines are offered by the glass but also by the quartino, providing almost two glasses at a slightly lower price, and with two people, it can be often a better alternative than one full bottle. We intend to continue dining there when we have theater in the area."

"The overall atmosphere of this restaurant is relaxed yet elegant and sophisticated. The food was outstanding, each entree better than the next. The risotto had perfect seasoning and consistency, the steak was flavorful and tender, and the gnocci tasted homemade. The service was attentive without being overbearing. The staff was quick to accommodate my mother with an escort to the elevator when they noticed she was hesitant to take the stairs, without making a scene. I've dined here twice now and look forward to returning soon."

"Dinner was absolutely delicious! We started with the Fritto Misto (Fried Calamari, Scallops, Shrimp, Salmon and Spicy Marinara Sauce). It was out of this world. The appetizer selection certainly set the bar high and the dinner came in well above our expectations. I had the Gnocchi
Ricotta Dumplings (Wild Mushrooms, Pancetta, Baby Spinach, Garlic, Olive Oil). It was out of this world. We ended dinner with a slice of the Torta di Cioccolato (Flourless Chocolate Cake, Pistachio Cream, Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce). Holy Moly Chocolate Goodness!!!"

"The service was fantastic - incredibly attentive waitstaff and buspersons. The food was very fresh-tasting and flavorful, and there was a wide variety of options. I recommend the delicious lamb sausage appetizer (although at $11 it was far overpriced for such a small portion), and my husband loved the fritto misto appetizer (which was a much better portion for the price) and the crab-wrapped shrimp entree. My risotto was tasty, though not quite as flavorful as I'd hoped, and I very much enjoyed the roasted beet and goat cheese side."

"The staff were very attentive and informative about menu choices. I only mentioned once on the reservation that it was my husband's birthday and his brother's birthday celebration dinner and the staff remembered and wished them both a Happy birthday and brought them a dessert to celebrate the special occasion. I was very impressed with this and the thoughtfulness of the staff. It was refreshing to see. I would definately go back to this restaurant for dinner. It was a wonderful place to dine before seeing the Opera."

"I have yet to be disappointed with this restaurant. The food was fabulous. I was with a client from the Milwaukee area and she was very impressed. She said the cream of mushroom soup was the best she ever had. I was blow away by the warm calamari and shrimp salad. My guest had paparadelle and again said it was great. I had the grilled pork loin, which I couldn't finish and took home. The temperature of the meat was perfect. Again, a first rate meal!"

"I took my husband to 312 for his birthday before going to a show at the Oriental. This was our first visit to this restaurant. Not only was the service and food exceptional, but the staff went above and beyond to make our night extra special, from reserving a special booth for us to bringing out a birthday dessert for my husband,which so many restaurants have stopped doing and its a shame. 312 makes their guests feel special and appreciated and it doesn't hurt that the food is absolutely amazing!! The ingredients were so fresh and of the highest quality and the menu selections were inventive and unique. This was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a LONG time in this city. I'd recommend it to anyone. We'll definitley be back!!!"

"312 is our favorite restaurant in the Theatre District. One time we were seated at the prep bar as "overflow" seating, and we enjoyed that so much we request it every time. "Disappointing! I have been to 312 on quite a few occasions and the thing I consistently notice is that the kitchen is inconsistent. I am wondering if perhaps I should be ordering a chop or a steak--perhaps their strength lies there. The cesar salad was a little overly dressed, but good. The artichoke bread with tapenade was terrific. My dinner of pasta, not so good. My companion's order was misunderstood--and when the correct dish was presented, it was unpleasant in appearance and had no flavor.

We should have stopped with the salad and bread. It was very good to that point. Our server was very gracious about our disappointment in our entrees.

The place was packed, so again, it may have been in our ordering."

"The food was excellent as was the service. We arrived at 11:45 and there weren't many diners. By the time we left the restaurant was crowded. We had theater tickets and were out in plenty of time to catch the matinee yet never felt rushed. "It was a miserable, rainy night, and it felt good to be inside and warm. It was our 48th anniversary, and since we enjoyed our last outing there, we were happy to come again. However, the food was not up to par. My wife's stuffed shrimp was overcooked, and mine was just ordinary. We would have sent it back, but had theatre tickets and didn't want to chance the time. The service was fine, and the drinks were good, so we weren't angry, just disappointed."

"The restaurant was beautiful, we were seated at a very nice table and the food was delicious.

Our waiter was terrible. Acted like he didn't care whether we were there or not. May have been a bit overwhelmed with the pre-theater crowd but frankly that's not my problem. Took orders from another couple who was seated about 15 minutes after us. My daugher waited patiently for chocolate milk that never came (well, it finally did come but turned out to be hot cocoa - she drank it anyway!) Snooty remark to me when I ordered a glass of wine which I thought was listed by the bottle number - when the drinks finally came the bar had sent a cocktail instead!"

"We like this restaurant for nights when we attend theater at Cadillac Palace, which just happens to be next door. We are becoming accustomed to the offerings of their new chef, though we were always pleased with his predecessor. The menu is seasonal, which assures variety and tastes that fit the weather very well. The pacing of the meal is quite well-done so that we never have to remind the waitstaff of our theater timing. We recommend it highly to those in the area and theatergoers looking for the "perfect" accompaniment to the play or musical."

We did request a window view seating however for some reason they decided to seat us in a corner next to the kitchen, which they attempted to cover the view using the diners coat check rack, which we thought was odd. Always an Italian restaurant, it has more "Italian" items than previously, but with choices not found in the typical neighborhood spaghetti and meatball joint. The Caesar salad was one of the best we've ever had. My wife's scallop appetizer was sweet and delicate, and her pork entree was tender and flavorful in a carrot/celery sauce. My tortellini en brodo was perfect, and my duck ravioli was covered with tons of shredded duck in a light sauce. The wine list was varied with more Italian choices than I've seen in a long time. "This was the first time at 312 Chicago, my girlfriend and I were going to a play right next door. We were late due to the traffic coming from Kenosha, WI. It normally would take 1 hour maybe a little more, it took us 2 1/2 hours. The hostess was very friendly and seated us right away then we told our waitress about our play which now we only had 1 hour to dine. The food was delivered promptly and it was fabulous, we both ordered the Spinach Gnocchi's and I have never enjoyed a better experience. The atmosphere and the service were the best and I will recommend this restaurant to everyone I know and can not wait to bring my husband next. I can not thank you all enough for the wonderful experience."

"After having read mixed reviews, we were pleasantly surprised by the whole dining experience. We had a very early reservation and service was very good. The food was better than we had anticipated. We could see though, after the dining room was filling up that the service had slowed down. In fact, one diner complained that a portion of their meal never made it to the table. They just need more wait staff than they currently have. We would definitely go back if we were going to the theater. I don't think we would just choose this restaurant otherwise, especially with so many other wonderful choices in Chicago."

"We have dined at 312 several times and have great meals and not so great meals. I would recommend it since it is so close to the theater district. My wife's butternut squash tortellini was great. My steak had a lot of fat and I know it was due to the cut but even for a ribeye it was excessive. Great Chicago atmosphere just stay with the pasta."

"i was disappointed in the food for the most part. caesar sald just passable - needed more salt(i never add salt to anything but eggs and tomatoes). the beets side dish was bland. the chicken dish was just fair. the only dishes that were remarkably good were the rigatoni bolognese and their cheesecake dessert.
also, although the waitress was very attentive, the bussing of used finished plates was really slow sometimes. all. in all, i would not return."

"312 Chicago is an established (I've been going there for 10 years), highly reliable upscale restaurant well situated in the Loop for dining before or after shows in the area (opera and theater district). The food is original and tasty, and they have a reasonably good wine list (strong in the Italian wines) to accompany the food. Service is impeccable. The space is well used albeit a bit crowded, but the tables are well arranged so that proximity to other diners is not too noticeable."

"312 has a very handsome dining room, the upstairs part of which looks over LaSalle Street. Our waiter was prompt and knowledgeable and the service went smoothly. The food was fabulous. Our less-than-adventurous eater enjoyed the Rigatoni Bolognese and the Tortellini soup. The lamb sausage appetizer was intensely flavorful and the Ruculeta salad with arugula, shiitake mushrooms and goat cheese was fantastic. The two swordfish entrees were cooked perfectly and I loved the butternut squash Tortelloni. The only problem was with the Misto salad, which we thought was dressed with too much vinegar. We had ricotta cheesecake, apple upside-down cake and gelato for dessert. I would go back just for those."

"312 Chicago was recommended by this site and concierge (Westin Michigan ave). I believe we had a bad night, weird for a Staurday on the brink of a massive conference (RSNA) - group of 8 people. Service bit slow and not polite - abrupt, pushed to make decisions. Recommended dish, shrimp stuffed with crab and wrapped in prosciutto, has promise but failed in execution - overcooked, rubbery shrimp, salty taste of prosciutto and and frying pan residu overwhelmed. Pork dish very dry (overcooked), gnochi (made from bread crumbs) stodgy (overcooked), steak (filet) and chips good, Desserts was excellent (all - signs of a very good pastry chef).
Atmosphere very quiet and as agroup we did not feel welcome in the restaurant. Will not return."

"Service was wonderful, food was good.. Appetizer was an assortment of fried seafood. Excellent. I ordered what in most places would be called Ciopino. It was fantastic scallops, clams, mussels, shrimp, white fish, lobster in a tasty broth. Served with crusty bread for dipping, Very good. My wife ordered stuffed shrimp wrapped with what appeared to be bacon (prosciutto?) Extremely salty but edible.. Sides were good.
We told the waitress about the shrimp and we were offered a free dessert, which we declined.
I would reccomend this place to anyone, especcially for the theater crowd."

"We dined here as a pre-theater experience. The service was phenomenal, but the food inconsistent. Scallop appetizer was amazing-on a par with a five star plus. However, the octopus was fishy and overly oily. Our server was very attentive and immediately took it back and exchanged for the butternut squash tortelloni which was quite good, although a little heavy on the sage. Papperdelle was just OK--not great. So the experience could range from wonderful to awful, depending on what one orders. Very fast and attentive service for a pre-theater experience, though."
