Visit one of the oldest and most well known Italian restaurants in all of Rhode Island. Located on Historic Federal Hill, The Blue Grotto has continued to provide exemplary traditional Italian cuisine throughout it's 30 year history. In an upscale, but casual environment, The Blue Grotto offers attentive service in a relaxed setting. The wine list is one of the best Providence has to offer.
"After several mediocre experiences with dinner we decided to use a Groupon for brunch. We were pleasently surprised. Service was excellent. Interesting choices. I picked Eggs Benedict with tomato and Mozzerella with a Balsamic glaze rather than Canadian Bacon. All Benedict's come on Focascia bread which gave an incredible taste but I did have to request a steak knife to cut the bread. Spouse's Steak &Eggs came done precisely as ordered. Pricing: 18.00 for buffet plus entre we're fair. 10.00 for just the buffet would have been overpriced. Buffet was sparce as stand-alone but fine as accompaniment. Odd rendition of breakfast sausage, More aligned with sausage and peppers found at a street festival but, then again, I hate peppers."

"Food at The Blue Grotto Restaurant was good but not great. With so many restaurants in the Providence area going back is not likely. Servers were attentive and atmosphere was nice. We had salmon and steak; perhaps the Italian dishes are better."

"Decent food. You can do better on the Hill. For the price, the overall quality, or lack thereof, was a disappointment. Tiny gulf shrimp when jumbo were called for, decent chic park. This place is seriously outmatched in that neighborhood."

"Great food, great service = great experience. My wife and I and another couple went to The Blue Grotto for the first time this weekend and we really enjoyed it. The service was great, the waiter was there whenever we needed anything, but not hovering, and very polite and friendly. We had a variety of dishes and all were fantastic."

"The food was excellent and the service was also great! The cioppino was delicious and plentiful - and came with some lobster! My husband loved the filet, cooked perfectly, with a lump crabcake that was also tasty. Our waitstaff was very knowledgeable and attentive when necessary. We would recommend the Blue Grotto for any occasion. We did not feel rushed at all!!!"

"Easter brunch was completely disappointing. Brunch started at 10:00, which was when our reservation was, but they clearly were not prepared. The server was unaware of the Easter brunch menu vs. the regualar Sunday brunch menu. The difference being that for Easter brunch was $23 and included the buffet and one entree. Normally, you can do onthe buffet for $9 or buffet and one entree for $18. The food selection on the buffet was at first incomplete (no bacon for about 20 minutes), of poor quality, and the hot items were barely warem yet dried out. The entrees across our group of 5 were at best mediocre, and no one finished their meal. The staff did not seem concerned about this at all."

"The restaurant needs renovations badly. Easter brunch / diner offerings were strange; buffet plus entree selection did not work. Packaged cereal? Grocery store pastry?Prepared entrees were done well. This restaurant needs some new thinking and energy."

"I thought the entire Wine Tasting Event was great, we all enjoyed. I just wish they had started on time. We arrived early at 6:00PM...expecting a 6:30 start time, the event did not get underway until 7:00PM. It appears they were waiting for people who were LATE in arriving but that was not fair to everyone else who arrived promptly. If you have a START time, the you should START ON TIME."

"Used LivSocial deal for 4 crs dinner for 2 - excellent meal & deal. Food was excellent, service good, free valet parking is a very nice touch (as is the complimentary biscotti placed in the car upon departure!). We will return to check out the reg menu."

"Lunch time special seemed like a good deal but the food was nothing to write home about. The service was unbelievably slow given that there were only 4 people in the entire restaurant. Underwhelmed."

"Our appetizer, the sampler platter was cold and under seasoned. Our entrees were under-whelming. The red sauce and sherry cream sauce were terribly sweet and I had bits of lobster shell in my lobster ravioli. I would not return to this restaurant. My boyfriend said he could have gotten a better meal at Pub 99 and I would have to agree. This is a real shame given the high prices that the Blue Grotto charges for their food."

"Had four course tasting menu meal (Living Social coupon)
Steak with lobster tail dish was terrible. Both steak and lobster were covered in creamy sauce. Lobster tail was extremely small and tasteless. The steak was chewy and fatty. Almost inedible. Mt wife said her Haddock dish was very good (those were the only 2 choices we were given - an Italian restaurant and we were not allowed to choose pasta with the 4 course tasting menu coupon!).
Don't see myself going back"

"We had the four-course tasting dinner and the food was very good. Limited choice--only one option for appetizer, salad, and dessert, and two choices for dinner. We had the steak and lobster tail--the steak was very tender with an excellent sauce--the lobster tail was not very satisfying. Wonderful bruschetta trio and a delicious dessert, along with a tasty salad. Team of three waiting on our table--sometimes they got their signals mixed so I would say the service could be a bit better. Room we were in did not have a lot of ambience."

"I very much enjoyed my first visit to the Blue Grotto. The food was GREAT! The wine list is vast. I would have to say that I read other reviews calling it a romantic spot, well if the decor was updated, then maybe. My only complants would be the decor and limited dessert menu. Otherwise, it was a great place and I will go back."

"The evening was delightful. The service was outstanding. The waiter was helpful in making selections, informative and attentive without being intrusive. The food was very good. While there could be some quibbles, the Golfo Risotto (for my wife - pesto risotto with seafood) and the pistachio encrusted scallops (for me) were delicious. The small room was intimate but the tables were not crowded together. The wine, selected with the help of our waiter, was reasonably priced and a surprisingly appropriate red given that we were having seafood."

"The only reason I would not give a 5 star rating is because I found the interior decor a bit dated. Great service, large portions, extensive wine list, and valet service make this a great resteraunt."

"The food was outstanding, comes in large portions, and the prices are appropriate for the area. They also have one of the best margaritas I have ever had. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went for 6, but that could have just been because it was a Wednesday night. The overall experience was good, but I can see where other reviews were a little harder on the service. We personally had no issues with our waitress, but since they only allow for valet parking, we had a real difficult time locating a valet both upon arriving and leaving the restaurant."

"We had a wonderful meal, great food, attentive service- until the bill came! We were charged incorrectly for the wine bottle and glasses, the waiter offered to correct it,and charged the credit cards incorrectly! He "didn't want to bother us" when he couldn't recharge one card. So he double charged the other card! I think it is finally straightened out."

"Was expecting more from a Federal Hill establishment. Interior needs a facelift and the food was good but not up to par with other restaurants on the hill. Best part of the night were the valets, who went out of their way to help us."

"This was our first visit to the Blue Grotto. This restaurant is such a well known restaurant on the hill we expected much more. Upon arrival we were greeted in friendly manner and immediately brought to our table. Service was slow and unattentive. Food was lukewarm at best. very long wait for food and bread was delivered to the table after we were well into our entree. there are so many great restaurants to choose from, we will not be returning to Blue Grotto."

"I hadn't been to the Blue Grotto in years so we decided to give it a try. The food was horrible. The lobster crab bisque tasted like Campbell's tomato soup. The chicken marsala was too sweet. We took it home to not be rude, but I will not be having it for left-overs. The chocolate mousee for dessert was congealed on the top and lousy. Even my husband who isn't too picky said it was one of the worst meals he ever had. Ambiance? none. Service was not good except for the hostess who was very nice. Very disappointed and would never return."
