Mel's Bar and Grill is the creation of Mel and Janie Master who owned the highly acclaimed Mel's of Cherry Creek for many years and also owned Jams of New York in the 1980's. Now owned and operated by Executive Chef Chad Clevenger, the restaurant focuses on contemporary American cuisine with an emphasis on freshness, seasonality of produce and originality. One of the great things about Mel's is that you can enjoy a simple meal accompanied by a great, local craft beer or enjoy a fabulous five course meal paired with superb wines. Mel's has received national acclaim from top food magazines over the years and was voted Best American Restaurant in Denver in 2007.

"Appetizers- Polenta cakes were great! The mussels were pretty good.It all went down hill from there. The steaks were okay. They were very hard to cut through. We ordered one medium and one medium well. The medium well was actually really well done. Desert- We had coffee with desert. There were so many grounds in my coffee I was able to get a spoonful out as I was trying to stir my coffee after I put cream in it. I wish this place was good. We really wanted to like it!"

"Great restaurant. Definitely an older crowd. If you live in Greenwood Village especially The Preserve then this might be your place of choice. Good food to be sure. Small bar area and they apparently let children sit at the bar (huge pet peeve and possibly against the law) taking away bar seats from ADULTS who imbibe. HELLO. This is a date night restaurant. The dining room is rather reserved. Good experience overall. I'd go back..."

"We ordered from the 52080 menu, which is available all the time on Monday through Thursday. I had the mussels, which were served on a sizzling iron plate. They sure give you a lot. The calamari was tasty but the portion was small. It came with 3 sauces on a Chinese soup spoon. For dinner, we had the strip steak. They were cooked properly but the meat was a bit chewy. I had the tres leches cake for desert. It was a bit dry. I was expecting the cake to be moister considering it was supposed to be made with 3 different kind of milk. The chocolate hazelnut napoleon was very tasty. It would be best with coffee. The wafers were really hard and difficult to eat. Overall it was very good and we'll go back again."

"The food was fabulous and the portions substantially generous for the price. I was also pleased to hear that they continue a version of the $52.80 for two menu beyond Denver Restaurant Week. I was slightly annoyed at the staff that kept hovering and trying to take my plate away before I was finished (it happened once during the main course and again during dessert). I guess they're not used to skinny chicks eating a ton of food."

"Mel's was great! The food was wonderful and staff was very friendly. They seemed to know most of the patrons at the restaurant personally. However, it was 50 minutes after our reservation before we were sat and the food ran slow. It was about 2 hours to get our full 3 courses. But being the first night of 5280 restaurant week, it was understandable."

"This place is definitely a neighborhood Gem!!! Truly it's a hidden diamond. The server was so warm and friendly (Stephanie,I believe). The name Mel's Bar & Grill is misleading it's not your neighbor bar & grill it's a great jazzy dinner lounge/piano bar restaurant with a nice romantic feeling and superb food. I mainly came to taste the coconut tres leche cake, (every bite I was in heaven and couldn't hear anyone around me). The rest of the food is beyond good, it's a lot better then some 3 & 4 star restaurants in downtown denver. Must try, you will fall in love with the ambiance and food! Try the Coconut Tres Leche cake it's 20 out of 10 stars (lol). Polenta cakes (app) are great too!!Definitely will return at least 8 more times this year."

"Although we had reservations at 7:00, we waited well over an hour for our table even though the hostess reassured us several times it would only be a few more minutes. Had we known, we would have left. It would have soothed the frustration a little if the hostess, server or management had sincerely apologized or offered a complimentary glass of wine, but instead we were just told that diners were taking a little longer that night. I suspect that they tried to cubby-hole us into a table for 2 since we saw parties of 4 being seated before us. It left a sour taste in what was supposed to be a special night out.

We ate off the 5280 menu, and thought the food was only so,so. The best part was the homemade ice cream."

"My husband and I had an excellent experience at Mel's Bar and Grill. The food was outstanding! The menu had a nice variety from seafood to steak and even a delicious, well thought out vegetarian entrée (Thank You Chef!). We really explored the menu and we both loved every item we ordered. "Enjoyed Mel's at Cherry Creek. Pleasantly surprised by the new location. Nicer atmosphere, great food, nice wine selection, and nice piano bar atmosphere. Not a large menu, but covered many areas. A little disappointed the Silver Oaks Cab 2004, which was a promotion for 5280, was actually a 2005. The waiter informed us of this after the bottle was opened. It would have been nice being informed prior to the bottle being opened and then asked if this was OK. Still, an excellent wine. We will return."

"Food was outstanding. It was Denver Restaurant Week and the place was packed. I don't think they anticipated the turn out so the service was terrible. In fact, both times I went up to the hostess podium, the hostess was not there and I had to wait over five minutes for her return. For our 7:30 pm reservation we were seated at 7:50 pm and then waited ten minutes for a waiter to show up."

"The 5280 menu at Mel's was creative and appealing! The great news is they will carry this menu throughout this spring! AS always, the service was exceptional. Although the atmosphere was inviting, I still miss the Mel's in Cherry Creek. It was good to see the same comfortable chairs, though!
The only thing that deserves mention is the phone message they have on their phone. The male voice sounds extremely bored and totally uninterested in why you are calling. Thank goodness the live hostesses are friendly, helpful and truly delightful!"

"Great food and good service up until it was time to get our bill. I handed my credit card to the waitress at 12:20 (as we were finished dining, dessert had been ordered 10+ minutes prior) and did not receive our bill and receipt until 12:45... "We were disappointed with our reservation situation. We had a reservation for four at 7:00 PM and were not seated until 7:50. When we arrived we were told there were "a couple of tables ahead of us". Forty minutes later when we checked to see how much longer, we were told the same thing. I think they probably overbooked for the 5280 promotion, but I would rather be told a longer time than shorter and be pleasantly surprised if it is earlier.

We were not aware of any manager on duty overseeing things,or someone to at least apologize for the long wait.

Our waiter was very professional and efficient and our dinners were very good."

"We love Mel's, however, we waited a good fifteen minutes after being seated for someone to take our drink order. The bread and butter were so oversalted that they were inedible and the salt continued on to the shortcake used in the dessert. For $100+ I would expect better. Everytime the door opened a blast of cold air filled the dining room and it was uncomfortable at best. Heavy socks would have been appreciated. I have contacted Mels directly about this."

"Interesting food pairings. Had some nice items that you don't find anywhere else. I had the fried chicken and waffles, and both were quite tasty. My husband loved the breakfast salad. Wait time though between courses was too long. Almost 15 minutes between 1st and entree. The restauarant was busy, but that seems extreme wait time. I would go back though for some of the other food choices."

"I've never had a bad experience at Mel's, but they really pulled out all the stops with their Denver Restaurant Week menu! The food was top notch and, unlike most of the other participating restaurants, you got to choose from the entire menu. I had the best mussels and the most amazing fried chicken & waffles I've ever had. My significant other very much enjoyed his crispy polenta and short ribs. The only down side was dessert - neither of us were terribly impressed with our bruleed items (not bad, just not as good as everything else).

The best part is, Mel's is going to continue to offer this $52.80 menu Mon-Thurs even after DRW is over! We will definitely be returning!"

"The food was fabulous, especially the crab crepes but the service was so terrible that I won't go back. We went for the Valentine's Dinner. It took 3 hours and 45 minutes for them to get our dinner served. The waitress was so rarely at the table that we constantly ran out of water, butter and bread. After 2 hours we told her that the service was not what we were used to at the restaurant and then several other people came to help through out the meal. They served the wrong people their meals, forgot to give my husband a dish so he got his 20 minutes later. It was a very disappointing dining experience. When we needed butter the man helping out said, I already gave you 2 butters. When we asked for more bread he said you had bread."

"Service needed to be a little more attentive. Waitress did not refill wine glasses. Same with water. Food came out a bit slowly. Food was very good, however. Chad Clevenger has a deft touch with food. Wine list was also very good and reasonable. Meal was a great value, as well. Piano in bar was badly out of tune, but the music was good."

"Chicken and waffles. That might be all I have to say. We had a business dinner with some partners from Hong Kong - foodies. A couple of us had the scallops and gnocchi - outstanding. One of the Hong Kong folks was feeling adventurous and ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffles. When we all saw the wild rice-stuffed waffles, we had to try them. What an incredible riff on a traditional southern dish."

"It was wonderful and as usual the food was fantastic. The chef knows how to please, this new plate addition of the waffle and chicken was outstanding. So much freshness and flavor in what we had. Mel's knows what people are looking for in a good restaurant and they deliver. Wait service was good and the place was busy. We keep coming back because we are always looking for something new and exciting to experience in food and Mel's with their changeing menus always has something new to try. Keep up the great work!!"

"It was cold in the restaurant. It took the waitress at least five minutes to get the assortment of tea bags after she brought the hot water so then the water was just warm. Also the restaurant did not have some of the featured items which was disappointing. It was a nice place for a group of women to get together for a nice chatty lunch.
Since we were there a long time, it felt like they turned off the heat at the end of our lunch. We were all getting cold and on the way out, we found that the bar area was much warmer."

"Confused menu. Italian ideas and ingredients, with Asian and southern additions that did not make sense. I had the lamb, which was fair. It could have used a lot more flavor. The collard greens were useless and affered no color to the dish, and did not make sense. The crispy snapper was cooked well, and tasty, the EVOO beads were disappointing.

The calamari was served with asian inspired sauces and an absolutely flavorless napa slaw. Fried calamari is more Italian than asian, and a delicious marinara or an aioli will always win with that dish - Keep it simple and delicious. Don't get fancy for the sake of getting fancy."
