Housed in a 1930s farmhouse with wood floors and coved ceilings, Coup des Tartes is the intimate and romantic dining spot in Phoenix. Seating just 38 guests, Coup des Tartes has provided guests with one of the most acclaimed dining experiences in the Valley for the last ten years. A seasonally changing menu features the highest quality ingredients and locally grown produce. Favorite dishes include Brie Brulee - warm brie topped with caramelized apples, Roquefort salad with figs and hazelnuts, and Pork Tenderloin with a pear brandy sauce and crumbled bacon. The desserts are of course not to be missed and the signature Banana Brulee Tarte with its crunchy caramel and creamy coconut custard over bananas can't be compared. Coup des Tartes was voted Best BYOBs by the Phoenix New Times. Guests may bring along their favorite wine or champagne for a small corking fee. "This is the first time my wife has been to the restaurant and she loved it. We really enjoy our French Food! This is a little more contemporary than classical French Cuisine, but delightful none the less. Very nice setting for a romantic dinner or special occasion."

"something has really changed... coup des tartes is not the same as it used to be... where are the white tablecloths? what happened to the great servers? it has lost its vibe. not the quality as we have come to expect at coup des tartes over the last 10 years. new ownership? feels like it has lost its soul, and now is just "going through the motions"... very sad."

"I have two serious reservations about Coup des Tartes. The first has to do with their corkage fee. It seems, at least this is what we were told, that either state or municipal law forbides the staff from even touching any bottle of spirits that is brought onto the premises. Therefore, I'm somewhat at a loss to explain why I had to pay an extra fee when I had to open & pour the wine myself. If the fee has to do with the glasses that were provided, I think I could have brought those too. My other, & more serious complaint, has to do with the NOISE. I's VERY LOUD, exacerbated by the fact that the tables are so close together you could easily sample what another diner was having. The noise destroyed the pleasure of the food & experience."

"Quaint, cozy BYOB. Went as a date with my wife. We were sat in the back room so it was quiet away from the main room. Food was good. Had the pork...it was good but nothing special. The accompanying saffron risotto was the best item either of us had. She had the Lambshank and enjoyed. Service was perfect. There when you needed, but not intrusive which is great for the ambiance. I would recommend for a date night or for a couples night sharing a bottle of wine."

"You cannot go wrong with the menu here, nor with the specials. The kitchen does everything well, and knows exactly how to use salt (i.e., sparingly). One of our favorite servers has moved up to the position of full-time pastry chef and is doing a magnificent job. The void in the waitstaff has been filled by yet another charming and competent individual, so it's all good. Seafood is always treated with respect (my date's sea bass was outstanding on this visit) and the land-dwelling chow is also given careful attention. The wines are excellent because you bring 'em yourself. The one big downer is the seating: the tables are crammed in pretty tightly and those of us whose figures owe nothing to hunger have trouble navigating."

"Coup des Tartes is one of those restaurants that you do not want others to know about so when you call there is an available table, but can’t stop spreading good word of mouth about it because they are a rare find in Phoenix.

You will find the food to be excellent, the timing of the courses to be not rushed. The restaurant is a bring your own wine or beer establishment, so if wine paring is important to you, I recommend that you visit their website and preview the menu before going.

Of the several times, my wife and I have enjoyed dinning at Coup des Tartes, we never have had a bad experience. Enjoy!"

"Nice, cozy place to eat. Not a lot of vegetarian choices beyond the salads and appetizers. Actually, there were none. They were willing to make accomodations, however, it was a little disappointing because it was not created as a vegetarian meal and was, therefore, not as creative as it could have been. Otherwise, everything was great."

"The special menu was way over rated especially for the cost. At $100 a head for dinner I expected something more the a small cut of steak smothered in an exteremely tart mustard sauce that you had to scrape off. But the attention to service was fantastic. Too bad the kitchen didn't turn out the quality of food to match the level of service."

"this was our first time dining here. Overall we had an amazing time! The food was excellent, although we had a special menu themed for Valentine's Day. I would definitely like to explore the regular menu sometime. BYO wine is a nice touch also. The place is small and the tables are close together, so don't expect to stretch out much in hear. This can also contribute to the noise level, but I don't think that it took anything away from a romantic dinner. I would recommend this restaurant. It is one of those little hidden gems deep in Phoenix that you don't hear about often...once you've been here you will remember it though!"

"Though I do not live in Phoenix, I am a frequent visitor and often try to visit Coup des Tartes for intimate dinners for 2-4 people. It never disappoints, particularly in the winter when it's heavily French-influenced menu provides extraordinary pleasure. The setting is very consistent with comfortable, non-pretentious French country dining. The menu provides very diverse selections. On my most recent occasion, I enjoyed the duck for the first time and found it to be far above average and served with light basmati rice that perfectly complemented the duck, slight crispy wisps of skin and incredible sauce. "Don't be fooled by the name, this is not a little coffee/dessert place. Coup des Tartes is a little French restaurant hidden near the Biltmore area. The food really is outstanding. Outside of a few dishes, the fares don't really reflect traditional French cuisine, but there's no doubt a French touch in the meals we had. This is a tiny restaurant, served at a French pace, with a French atmosphere (not kidding). No loud pop music, just mostly the background chatter of the other customers. You have to come expecting to take your time and enjoy your food and your company. Fares are on the high side, but worth it. Don't forget to bring your bottle of wine since it's a BYOB place. Also, I highly suggest to make reservations ahead of time."

"This was our 1st time at this lovely French Bistro. The Sea Bass was exceptional and my friend had the special for the night of lobster tail with drawn butter and she thought it was delightful. How refreshing got a restaurant of this caliber to have a BYOB of wine. The was a reasonable corking fee of $9.00. The wine glasses were large and of decent quality.
This is a small restaurant but the service and food were excellent.
We will go again. Too bad it isn't in our neighborhood of Tempe, AZ rather than in Phoenix, because we would go there more often. As it is we will drive the 10 miles for the gem."

"This was my second time eating at Coup de Tartes and both times now I have had exceptional food. My first time there I tried the Lamb Shank because I heard how great it was,it definitely lived up to the hype. This time going was for my wife's birthday, and since she only eats poultry and seafood I checked ahead on the menu to see what was being served. To my surprise 2 different fish dishes,chicken breast,and the special of the night was mussels in spicy cream sauce so I was very satisfied with the options for non-red meat eaters. Another plus is they serve organic meats and veggies..they buy from local farmers when possible. Overall one of the best little places I have ever eaten."

"Food was excellent! The fact that it is BYOB helps the wallet a lot, as the food is expenseive. Service was mediocre, however they were very busy. Requested a secluded table for 2x (we were celebrating) & got a small table shoved in the corner next to a loud group of 4x. Had to reach over our small table & negotiate the many plates, utensils & glasses to even hold hands. There were other couples there seated at round tables for 4x, so that was very disappointing."

"From the intimate bistro atmosphere to the scrumptious tartes, Coup des Tartes is a treat from beginning to end. We went straight to the entrees this visit (to save more room for dessert!) but have enjoyed the brie brulee as a first course on more than one occasion. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly, though the sauce seemed a tad oversweet for our tastes. The organic salmon was delicate and delicious, but the real star of the night was the butternut squash risotto- my mouth waters just thinking about it! We finished with the hazelnut tarte with vanilla bean ice cream and practically licked the plate clean. The BYOB policy is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy uncork a special wine with your meal."

"This BYOB french bistro is a quaint little table-filled house that serves wonderful food. It's almost too tight a fit to be really romantic but the atmosphere is very nice. Our food was delicious from the pate appetizer to the banana brulee dessert with wonderful entrees and salads in between. The one surprise was a couple with a 9 month old, and even though he was a very well behaved baby, he was a baby none the less in a living room area with 8 tables. We'll return when the urge for good french food is on our minds and it's great to bring your own favorite bottle of wine with their reasonable $9 cork fee."

"I remember this place being more intimate and romantic. It was like they added a few more tables in a very tight space to maximize turnover. I felt like we were eating right on top of another couple. Somethings were as good as I remember in the past like the onion tart. Unfortunately, the main courses were just OK. We had the Salmon, which they billed as the best ever, their words...not ours. It wasn't memorable. We also had the lamb shank. The flavors were good, but the shank itself was fatty. Maybe that is typical of the cut of meat, I don't know, but I didn't particularly care for it. The service was great. Overall, for the money, I think can think of better choices."

""If I could lick my plate in public, I would" was my date's comment on the most recent visit. That pretty much summarizes both of our meals, and all the ones we've had here before. The menu is not large, but it changes frequently and there's always something new (and delicious) to try. Being one of the very, very few BYOB restaurants in the state draws a steady stream of people with well-stocked cellars who want a good meal to go with their prized beverages. In a sense, it has the best wine list in the world: the diner's own. The only negative aspect is the size of the dining rooms. There's such a thing as being *too* cozy. On the other hand, it does give you a chance to compare bottles and tasting experiences with your fellow diners."

"Worst dining experience i had in a while. I was expecting more from a restaurant that advertises itselft among "most romantic" restaurants in the valley, our night at Coup Des Tartes was everything BUT romantic. Lots of noise, music that doesnt go with the ambience (Hanna Montana... really?) waiter in flip flops... definitely not worth the price. Avoid Coup Des Tartes if what you are looking for is a romantic dinner."
