Tao
A 16-foot Buddha, which floats above a reflecting pool filled with Japanese carp, presides over the scene at Tao. A favorite destination for celebrities and athletes, this Pan Asian restaurant specializes in authentic Hong Kong Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisines. Tao has three levels of dining including the prized "Skybox" which offers views of this former movie theater unparalleled in New York. In addition to its 300 seats, Tao includes a sushi bar, lounge and two bars at which to enjoy the food and the show. Appetizers range from $8 - $18; Entrees: $16 -$39. "This is an absolutely gorgeous restaurant. The food is outstanding!!! Our service was exceptional. Then, when we came downstairs we saw Theresa Caputo waiting for a table with her girlfriends. This is definitely the place to go for AWESOME asian fare when you are in Manhattan."

"We got there by noon when the restaurant was almost empty and even though the service was slow.
We ordered a well done hanger steak with french fries. The meat was overcooked on the outside and rare in the inside. The fries were overcooked and you can get better ones in any fast food."

"Typically I go to Tao for the bar scene after work, but I had my first business lunch here the other day, It was fun and vibrant, and I was impressed with the restaurant's ability to do both nightlife and lunch so well. The only down side is it is loud, so sometimes it is hard to hear across the table."

"Overall my family had a good experience, however our waiter made our visit not as enjoyable as previous visits. Our waiter took forever to bring out the entrees, for example everyone had their food except for one person who ordered sushi, they were waiting for over 10 minutes for their food. We also asked for some milk for our daughter and when we asked the waiter where it was after waiting for 20 minutes he had forgotten and then brought it back. Overall the restaurant is beautiful and fun, however this one waiter was not as great as the previous waiters we have encountered."

"We enjoy this restaurant, because the ambience is unique in New York. It is an interesting place to take friends, especially out-of-towners. "Tao isa great place to enjoy either a mid-day glass of wine for a rest while shopping in the area or for late night socializing. The drinks were made well, there was a good size selection on the menu, the food itself was very good. My one complaint would be the fact that I had made reservations and we were forced to sit by the enterance bar for over a half hour before being seated-I think we should have been compensated for that. Other than that, the atmosphere is both energetic and tranquil given the music, open-space, and aesthetics. Great place for pretty much any occasion. :)"

"Not the place to propose marriage, but definitely a hot spot for Asian food. Energy abounds. We waited about five minutes beyond our reservation time. The place was slammed. We were seated on the second level overlooking the great statue of Buddha. Our server wasn't very helpful, but we managed to order a fabulous selection. My husband's choice of sea bass was delightful. I opted for a vegetarian medley of dishes.

"Even though food service and ambience was good they have to manage their reservation better. I had reservation at 845 and they made me wait an hour to be seated that is absolutely unacceptable. Either they don't know what they are doing with reservation or they don't care about customer time. It seamed either they overbook reservation without understanding necessary time allotment. I hope management looks into it and fix it"

"We went to Tao for an early dinner - timing was perfect - the restaurant wasn't crowded or noisy. (Usually it's quite lively!) the food was, as usual, excellent - although I wish they had their duck dish for one. currently it's only for two and my wife hates duck! was a nice evening - and nothing beats that huge Buddha!"

"I invited my friends to lunch at Tao for my birthday. Overall, the restaurant was very nice. The drinks were fabulous, but I wouldn't recommend it for a casual meal. The food is good, but I personally feel that some of items are overpriced (i.e. $8 a bottle for a water, etc.). I have had better meals at a more reasonable price. All said, it was a great experience, but I probably would not go back unless it is for a special occasion."

"I've been to TAO in Las Vegas and Loved it! Went in NY and the dood was the same but the Service wasn't the same at all. The waiter even knocked down a beer from the table and dindn't even apolagize. He did return with another one later but never said anything about it."

"My son had a special performance in the Upper East Side so to celebrate, we made reservatios at Tao. We made a special request for my son's dessert and they did a great job writing Congratulations, XXXXX on the plate. He is 11 and was very pleased. The server was attentive but forgot to bring a few drinks so brought them later "on the house". The food is good. The spareribs were a hit as were the Chinese Greens and Chinese Broccoli. The Beef with potatoes were cooked perfectly. The chicken dumplings were nice but a bit salty. The only dish that was average was the Phad Thai. The ambience is cool and the kids (11 and 13) were very impressed to be in a more adult like enviroment. I will visit again the next time in NY."

"I made a reservation for 8.15pm at Tao on Saturday night. They called during the day and advised me to arrive by 8.15pm, and iour party did not turn up on time, they would give our table away by 8.30pm. We turned up on time. We were finally seated over an hour later, after speaking to the hostess on a few occasions as we were not impressed with constantly being told we would be seated next. Once we were seated we noticed the very large table next to us was filled with 13 year olds celebrating an event. Needless to say my friends and I were not impressed with children being in Tao. We didn't appreciate a restaurant of that calibre would allow children for dinner. We will not be returning after this experience. Shame as the food is good."

"Had a 10:30 pm reservation for two. Arrived and checked in with the front desk at approximately 10:15 pm. We then sat around for over an hour until around 11:25 pm when we were taken to our table, which just happened to be located upstairs in the corner near the waiters' station and under the blaring speaker. The food, though, was amazing as was our server and the rest of the staff."

"This restaurant is one of my favourite that I have ever been to. It was not only a restaurant but an experience. Make your reservations well ahead of time. The only downside is that it is VERY expensive.

"When you walk into Tao the host are very friendly but then you walk over to the bar lounge area. The bartender was snobby at first but then warmed up to me and my group. Then we get seated for our table and the waiter guy seemed helpful at first with the menu. The end of our meal had arrived and I asked if the could sing happy birthday to me. He said we don't do that here this isn't apple bees. This was very rude and made me very upset. All he had to say was we don't sing happy birthday but if you order from our desert menu we will bring candles and your friends can sing for you. He took my special moment from me and I don't think I will ever go back to Tao again."

"We had a party of 8; the server was beyond attentive; food was outstanding. A few at the table commented that it was the best steak they ever had! All of the starters are amazing!!! The fortune cookie dessert is the best! Not to be missed....still outstanding after all these years!!!! Never disappoints!"

"Wife wanted to go back to Tao for our 15th Wedding Anniversary - food was great and our server went out of his way to make us a special dessert for our Anniversary. Great place for a special occassion - if you want to be able to sit in a larger group and have a conversation ask to be seated upstairs - the sound level is more reasonable than downstairs. Thanks for making it a memorable dinner for my wife and I."

"We have had great experiences dining at the bar on weeknights at Tao. This time we took out-of-town guests there on a Saturday. What a disaster. We were seated between a round table for 14, including children who could not be made to sit still, and a table of 20 teenage girls. That was just bad luck. However, the real problem was that the waitstaff was clearly trying to turn the table over as quickly as possible. They repeatedly removed plates that still had food on them, took my friend's wine glass with wine in it, and even removed shared serving plates that still had food on them. This continued to occur even after we made our displeasure known to our waiter. It will be a long time before I return to this restaurant, if ever."

"Despite reservation we had to wait 30 mins for table.. Not a surprise in NYC so not too put out about the wait.
Unfortunately we were seated squished in between 2 other couples.. no conversation privacy at all. Only 1 of the 2 entrees we ordered arrived. The waiter tried to take away the appetiser dish (that still had food on it) before we had finished - obviously this was because our mains were ready. The mains came out with no break at all between courses. We felt very rushed. The salmon was dry.
