A 16-foot Buddha, which floats above a reflecting pool filled with Japanese carp, presides over the scene at Tao. A favorite destination for celebrities and athletes, this Pan Asian restaurant specializes in authentic Hong Kong Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisines. Tao has three levels of dining including the prized "Skybox" which offers views of this former movie theater unparalleled in New York. In addition to its 300 seats, Tao includes a sushi bar, lounge and two bars at which to enjoy the food and the show. Appetizers range from $8 - $18; Entrees: $16 -$39. Offering $24.07 Prix Fixe Lunch Menu year round.

"We had a party of 4 people celebrating my son's 19th Birthday. The food and the whole experience was very positive. They wrote Happy Birthday on my son's dessert plate and included a candle for him. They were extremely accommodating in every way."

"My daughter and I went for her 21st birthday. Although we had reservations and had to wait by the chic and trendy bar for an hour, it was well worth it! She was acknowledged in a special way. Not only did they bring her a colorful drink on the house but made her an amazing dessert! The food was great. We ordered 4 dishes including ribs, pad thai, crispy orange chicken, and duck filled spring rolls. They were so tasty and the duck particularly decadent. She ordered a piece of eel sushi that was so fresh. Due to the generous portion sizes we of course took home some food which the restaurant packaged in a special souvenier birthday bag. I was told it was the best birthday she ever had thanks to Tao."

"I absolutely LOVE the food at Tao. Now I realize it is a bit of a trendy place, but I don't recommend places because they are the thing to do...the food is the thing and it is AMAZING! They included a menu card with our check and when we saw the evening prix fixe menu we HAD to go back. Wasabi encrusted filet mignon? Are you kidding me? It was SO f'ing good!!!! I have been to Tao every single time I go to NYC. They have a prix fixe that is less than $25 Monday thru Friday. Try it then...YOU will keep going back!"

"The small plates menu is terrific for appetizers and the selection of main course items is very extensive to handle the different diets of my guests. The only negative comment is that the music was far too loud which made it difficult to talk across the table. The staff was very accomodating but with a ltttle bit of that East Side attitude. Great evening!"

"Our dining experience at Tao was fantastic. The service was top notch and the food was phenomenal. Although we were late for our reservation, the wait staff made sure that we were able to enjoy all wonderful dishes Tao has to offer. If you have never been to Tao, hurry up and get there. It will be an experience you will never forget. If I had to rate my experience I would give Tao and its food and staff 10 stars. Thank you for a memorable evening."

"Great night! Came from out of town, beautiful seat in front of the Buddha. Incredible service - they were 30 mins late seating us to our reservation, the hostess gave us a round of free drinks - when does this happen? The bar is great so we didn't mind at all! It was great! The food, drinks, service at the table! Totally recommend. Duck Spring Rolls - Unreal!"

"The food was ok. I expected more from an upscale restaurant that specializes in Asian cuisine. The service and the decor of the restaurant was very pretty. We like the big Indian Buddha statue. It was a little too dark to take pictures. I don't recommend it for families with small children. The menu is not kid-friendly."

"What is the point of making a reservation if the restaurant won't get you seated anywhere near your time? I brought some clients to dinner at Tao for an 8:30 dinner. After 3 separate conversations with the maitre d' we walked out at 9:20pm and went to a nearby restaurant."

"Aside from the great food our experience was NOT a good one. Our reservation was for 8:30. We arrived at 8:33 and were handed a pager. We waited for 50 minutes before being seated. After 40 minutes I went to the host to check on the table and was not offered any kind of apology or anything. I was rudely and abruptly told that the table would be ready in a few minutes. After finally being seated at 9:20 (we were starving) we sat down on the second floor only to realize that the DJ music was so incredibly loud that we could barely talk to each other. We had a wonderful server (Norman) and the food was delicious. However, the experience was completely ruined due to the long wait and insanely loud music and rude host staff."

"I first started going to Tao's when they first opened a few years ago. The food was excellent then and your savoured every morsel. The drinks transported back to some Carribbean island and you were in "heaven" once again. However, now that Tao's is such a "hot spot", you no longer savour every morsel but are rushed because the maitre'd "needs your table so that [he] can seat the next party." WHAT?! I thought dining experiences were meant to be memorable or even just that. . .an experience. Well. . . sorry fellow foodies, Taos's is no longer the spot for us to enjoy a wonderful food experience. It's now the shrine for "who's who" and those who just want to drink and "be seen." This diner is heartbroken, never to return to Tao's."

"Tao did not disappoint. We were very well looked after. The service was excellent and the dessert finale made the special occasion especially memorable. "Tao would have been scored as excellent if it were not for the DJ and extremely loud music in the main dining room. The music was fine, but it was way too loud. They could have had the same type of music, but much lower. There is a bar area, but overall, this is a restaurant, not a nightclub. Everyone in our party agreed that the food was very good, but I will probably not go back there any time soon because of the music."

"I had a reservation and waited 45 min. Ridiculous! Hostess was an idiot. We had someone join us late and she couldn't tell them where we were seated. So they had to walk around the restaurant to find us. Server was very nice. Food was not good. Kung pao chicken was the best thing we ordered and it wasn't that good. Snapper was sitting in a puddle of sauce. Orange chicken was way overcooked. The drinks were good and the dessert was good. Especially the giant fortune cookie. Really don't go there for the food. If anything its a great spot to drink at and enjoy the ambiance. Will not eat there EVER again."

"I was amazed that everything worked so well at TAO. First, I reserved the dinner in Brazil, before I arrive in USA. I took my friends there and we were very well treated by the hostess, we got our table at the time we booked it, and the waitress was very polite - that is not usual in NYC.The food was great, wine affordable and appetizing.I will definitely have a dinner again at TAO when I will be in NY next time.Paula"

"Despite outstanding food, will not return. Noise, particularly in lounge, is too distracting. "Having a reservation did not secure a table, the restaurant was very loud, very crowed and initially we felt ignored.

The music was 80'ish and way, too, LOUD, and I consider myself fairly hip for a 58 year old, but I would not return to this restaurant."

"Great food and service. We had a party of 8 and did the prix fixe. Rather than order our appetizer, entree and dessert separately, the waiter arranged for us to be served family style so that we could all try a little bit of everything. Naturally, we thought there was going to be some ploy where we'd get half the food and only the cheap stuff. We were completely wrong. The portions and food itself exceeding our expectations. We had to argue for 5 minutes over who was going to finish the wasabi crusted filets because we were all so full by that point. We somehow managed to find room for desserts, and they were amazing as well. We only at about 50% of the dessert. The only downside was the 30 minute wait to be seated and the $10 beers."

"We didn't appreciate making a reservation for 10 p.m. and being seated at 11:00 p.m. The dining room was very cold as well, there appeared to be a draft coming from outside, which would be nice in the summer but not in the middle of winter.

Further, in the waiting area there were 6 or 7 shady men who completely looked out of place and were obviously running some sort of scam on the guests waiting to be seated. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Security completely disregarded them. Either they were oblivious to it, not doing a good job, or in on the scheme.

Also, we ordered the Chef's choice platter and what we were given was something that can be purchased at a Bento box in any downtown corner."

"I went for lunch and had the three course pre fix. The duck spring rolls were filled with a very strong paste that had no duck or duck taste! i only ate half of one and left the rest. For entree i opted for the salmon with noodles; the salmon was terrible, had a very fishy taste, but really strong. The only thing i liked was the fruit with sorbet, but you do not go to a good restaurant for that.... I'm not coming back!"

"The waitress was somewhat rude. She asked what we were drinking and I said, "I'll have water." and assumed she'd ask my friend as well, however, she just abruptly left. Our beef noodles were WAY too salty and so it went almost untouched. The sausage, egg, and fried rice was somewhat salty. The food overall was sub par of what I expected from such a fancy restaurant and at such high prices. I could have gotten food from Chinatown that would've been 10x tastier and at one tenth of the price! I must say I'm very disappointed in Tao as I'd been looking forward to it for a long, long time. I won't be going back again."

"I came to Tao for my birthday dinner and it was so good! I had an order of the Pad Thai, which was delicious. The best part of the meal was the Giant Fortune Cookie. It tasted like heaven in my mouth. The service was very quick and friendly. The entire atmosphere and surroundings of the restaurant were great. "For a party of 6 Tao was great. This place has an amazing decor and shareble dishes. Everything from apetizers to deserts was beautifully presented. "We had an early reservation on a Friday night. After we were seated upstairs, we waited a good 5-7 mintues before anyone came to the table, despite the evening wait staff being lined up against the wall like players waiting to take their turn at bat. Finally one show up and I asked if he had drawn the short straw. He gave me a ditry look and dissapeared. Apparently he switched with another waiter, who was an absolute pro. We were glad he did. That was the only down side. We four small plates and it was enough to fill us both. The Kobe and the Chilean Sea bass small plates were perfect. Flavor danced in my mouth. The pork was nicely done and the lobster egg rolls were not greasy."

"The food was certainly the best part of the entire night. Do not go unless you have a reservation- we had to wait over a half hour even with a reservation (and arriving 45 minutes before our reservation). If you are going with a group you intend on having a conversation with, this place is not recommended. The bread pudding is amazing- definitely recommended."

"My dinning experience was very good at TAO. The food was nice and the service fast and qualified. The big disadvantage was our BOOKED tabel...we had to wait about an hour and all the times we were asking, the Restaurant Manager said sth about "in 10 minutes"....."

"I was a little hesitant at first because the place was so packed, but we had reservations and after waiting 15 minutes we were seated. The decor of the place is ridiculously awesome. They have a huge free standing Buddha with a koi fish pond around it. The seats are very comfortable and no matter where you are sitting you've got a cool view around you. The food was AMAZING. The best Orange chicken I have ever had. It was like caramelized so you had the tany from the orange and the sweet from the sugar...Delicious! There giant fortune cookie dessert with white chocolate and dark chocolate moose is to die for. The waiter was supper cool and friendly. He was so attentive and helpful. I can't wait to go back! There should b a Tao in every city!"

"We had an amazing experience at Tao. We went for restaurant week and unlike other restaurants that give you the smallest possible quantity of food, Tao's portions were out of this world. "HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!! We got there 45 minutes EARLY for our reservation, they made us sit at the bar for drinks. We went over about 15 minutes before our reservation to try and be seated, in which they gave us a pager to tell us when our table was ready. They didn't wind up seating us until almost 8:30 for a 7pm reservation! The hosting staff was very rude, and kept making excuses. Our food was served pretty quick though, and was very good, but the whole scene there is just rediculous. They keep you waiting around at the bar to spend extra money on drinks, and they just try and make it be one of these NYC scenes, which I am not into."

"We went to Tao with a group of eight during restaurant week and had a reservation for 8pm. I have been at Tao before and I have had a good experience in the past, liked the food and the atmosphere. I know that you sometimes have to wait in the lounge for a while, but this time it was just too much. The whole party was there in time at 8pm - at 10:15 we still had no table and left... angry and very hungry. If a place like Tao can't manage their own reservations... Overall I think that there are better places with similar food, great atmosphere and way better service. I don't any of us will be back again - not even for restaurant week."

"this was one of the worst experiences i have had. arrived at 7pm for a 7.45pm booking. by 8.45 we still ahd not got a table. i booked 1 month in advance. staff rude, unhelpful. absolutely ridiculous. paid $90 for two round of drinks for the pleasure of being shoved in a corner in the over crowded bar. gave up by 9pm and went somewhere else. I will be complaining to the restaurant directly and askign for the money i spent on drinks back. DO NOT GO."

"I'm a regular customer of Tao, and I decided to take my husband and his niece and I was very disappointed with the quality of the food. The steak was not that great, the onion rings too grease. The desert was the only thing that I liked on my meal.
My niece has the fish and it was so oily that I could have taken the remain oil and used it for cooking for a least a week.
Very sad how this good restaurant is damaging the quality of the food."

"We showed up 10 min early & then proceeded to wait 45 min for our table. There was no room to wait -- there were probably 200 people standing in the bar area. There were no available seats & people were pushing & splashing their martinis. Our beeper finally went off & they escorted us to a table on the second floor, behind the people at the bar. We saw another open table but were told we couldn't sit there. They said we could receive the next open table & were promptly escorted back downstairs. Once downstairs, the story changed & we were handed another beeper & placed at the end of the waiting list. After being asked to move back into the bar area several times by the bouncer (at this point it had been about an hour) we decided to leave."

"The foof at Tao was extermely delicious -- the Chilean Sea Bass is the best dish in the restaurant. I cook fish at home for a million years and it would never taste that good. The Pad Thai Noodles are very plentiful and have an excellent seasoning to them. Three people could easily share one portion. The chocolate spring rolls are very heavy and are on the greasy side. I could only eat half a spring roll and I really like chocolate."

"While the seafood dishes were some of the best I have ever had, the desserts were terrible. The hosting staff was incredibly rude to our party and I think the "arrive 15 minutes early" policy is ridiculous. I would not reccomend this establishment to anyone. "When one makes a reservation, one expects to be seated at the reservation time, not 50 minutes later. "The Good: Atmosphere - very lively. Dance music is played throughout the restaurant. Good place for groups celebrating accomplishments.

The Bad: Atmosphere - Music is loud, so if you are interested in having a lot of conversation, skip Tao. We had a reservation but still waited 45 minutes for our table. The bar was extremely crowded. It was impossible to get a drink. Food was good, but not excellent."

"Had a reservation thru Open Table confirmed for 7:15...in fact, I had to return a call from the restaurant on the day of the reservation to confirm it. Did not get to our table until 8:30. "Even though we made a reservation and were on time we had to wait 45 minutes. This isn't unexpected at a place like this however, there was no room anywhere in the bar, the coat check area, the hall way or the foyer to stand and that was uncomfortable. When some one from my party asked the hostess how much longer our table would be she was overly rude and harsh. The server was at least nice and the food was generally good, but the dessert was questionable and most of my table left there's unfinished."

"Delicious food but expect a wait. I've eaten here plenty of times (always on Friday and Saturday nights) and even with a reservation we have been seated at least an hour after it. Each time they have given us a free dessert for being "so patient." And the free dessert is always amazing!

"Having been recommended TAO restaurant by a friend,we booked a table from the UK as it was going to be one of the highlights of our trip to New York. We arrived a little bit early,which was good as it gave us time to have a cocktail before we were due to be seated at 8.15pm. Unfortunately over an hour later,we were still waiting to be seated, the pager had not activated at this point. So after having to ask 2 people what was happening, the Matre D' finally checked and scrubbed out our names and without even acknowledging me and ordered some chap to take us to a table. "I'm most perturbed that I had an 8pm reservation. My entire party was there five minutes early and yet, I was handed a beeper like I was at the Cheesecake Factory in the suburbs, and then had to wait 40 minutes before I was seated. On a Monday night. For a party of two. Maybe this is how it always is at Tao, but what's the point of having a reservation at all then?"

"We had the Restaurant Week menuy which was generous beyond any other place that does Restaurant Week. And delicious!!! Everything everyone had was yummy.

The place is a real experience to see.

ONLY drawback: it's another one of those places where you cannot have a conversation even with the person sitting right next to you. Way, way, way too noisy. That would prevent me from going back unless I made a 3 p.m. reservation and hoped it was quieter."

"Our food was very good, though looking back I think we would have ordered a larger variety of appetizers and not entrees because the appetizers far outshone the entrees. Though the decor was very cool, I do feel that the lights in the dining area, at least over the banquet/table/chair area we were in, were way too bright. There was no romance to sitting in the area. Our server was polite and helpful, just the right amount of attention without being overbearing."

"We waited over an hour for our table even though we had a reservation-- it seems like they were waaaaay over booked. Irritating. The bar was nice and the drinks were great but I really hadn't anticipated waiting so long and was starving-- the whole time I was wishing I had eaten a snack before I left. The food was acutally great and the waiter was very nice to bring us a fabulous desert platter to compensate for the long wait. The atmosphere at the bar and the dining area is really really loud so don't go planning on having any important converstaion. Not a great place for a first date or catching up with and old friend. More for a group outting, girls night, etc. Overall-- not really my scene but glad I tried it and and enjoyed the food."

"We were very disappointed and will not be returning to the restaurant. We arrived promptly for our reservation to be told that it will by 'minutes' for our table to be ready. It took an hour and 20 minutes to be seated. Customer service was horrible. When we complained about the delay, the manager was very rude and threatened to give our table away to the next customer."

"GREAT cocktails, but the bar is a HASSLE. I would have stuck around for another drink or two if there had been room to even stand at the bar. Something should be done to create more space.

I enjoyed the appetizers we had (Shrimp Tempura and Crispy Tuna Sashimi), but neither was noticibly above par. I had the Sea Bass for dinner, which I ADORED. The sauce was delicious and all the veggie variety kept the dish interesting. My boyfriend had the Wasabi Steak and was underwhelmed. It came out over-cooked and was just sort of boring. For dessert, I had the Chocolate Spring Rolls which were rich and decadent and superb. My boyfriend enjoyed the Banana Bread Pudding... he called it tasty."

"Food and service was good, but we had to wait almost 1 hour for our table (we had reservations). Tao definitely overbooked during restaurant week. The bar area was extremely crowded and was not a comfortable wait especially when we weren't told we would have to wait so long. We would had made ourselves at home if they were honest with us in regards to the wait time. However, when we were finally seated, the food was delicious the service was great until we paid our bill and the guy in the black suit and earphone was circling our table like a vulture waiting for us to leave so they can give the table to another group."

"I had lunch at Tao for restaurant week. The decor is amazing and the food was good but our waitress was, well a bit on the dry side. We asked her for a recommendation and she seemed confused by the question. She just wasn't very warm at all. While the food was good, the drinks were way, way overpriced ($8.50 for a sigha beer?!?!?) and if it weren't restaurant week, I would not pay full price for the food. It was good, but not spectacular and certainly not worth the price. In this case, you pay for the "chi-chi" factor more than anything else."

"Food and service was excellent. I had expected less from such a huge, trendy place. Usually places like this are more for the scene and less for the food but surprisingly that was not the case. However, we did notice that as the later it got the place turned into more of a "scene" and the noise level became really unrealistic. "I took an 88 year old colleague there for lunch on her birthday..our second time doing that. She now loves Tao as much as I do. I make sure that she sits facing the statue and she comments how peaceful that makes her feel. The food and service are always terrific and the price fixed charges are very palatable, especially in this economic climate. Tao in New York and Las Vegas are my family's favorite restaurants."

"Went here for Restaurant Week, and the food was amazing! Our server was great also. What surprised me most was that the restaurant week options were full portions and their best dishes (to me), like chilean sea bass. My only complaint is that they were running about 1 hour behind schedule for reservations, and I'm 8 months pregnant and had no where to sit to wait. If they are going to run behind on reservations, it would be nice to have more of a waiting area. Right now, there only waiting area is the bar, which was so crowded, and I couldn't risk having people bump into my bump. Overall, I loved it and can't wait to come back next year!"
