Brasserie Beck
Chef/Owner Robert Wiedmaier of Marcel's opens a casual, contemporary brasserie named after his younger son. The stunning space features an open steel and glass kitchen visible from three sides, set across from a unique family-style chef's table, dramatic 22-foot ceilings and a raw bar located at the end of a grand marble and walnut bar featuring an array of Belgian beers on tap to complement his French Belgian fare. Expansive outdoor patio is open April thru October.

"I love Brasserie Beck for its inventive menu, lively atmosphere, and great food. I took four out of town guests there for lunch and they loved it. We had hoped to eat outdoors, my favorite outdoor dining area in downtown. However, weather prevented it. The restaurant can be very noisy, yet was not full enough at lunch to be a problem."

"My business partner and I, plus our others came to BB on a Thursday evening. The service was a bit slow, but our server was eventually attentive. We had an array of dinner courses, given two meat eaters and two vegetarians, and everything was outstanding. The menus is not so big that it is overwhelming to decide, but has just enough to satisfy just about any pallet. I would recommend BB for a special occasion, a celebration of any kind, or just a romantic dinner out."

"I have returned to Brasserie Beck's many times and have never been disappointed. Wonderful dishes this evening included: skate, duck and octopus. Dare I say that as a Greek I have to come to a Belgian restaurant to taste (in my mind) the best octopus in town? The service was well-timed and informative. Ramon Narvaez, the wine person and sommalier for the Weidemeir restaurants, maintains a wonderful and serious wine list at reasonable prices. His knowledge for small production champganes is outstanding. Oenophiles should look for them."

"...people are allowed to smoke. And they smoke a lot. SO much so that I couldn't focus on socializing because I was literally being bathed in second hand smoke. It really ruined the entire experience. Sorry smokers, but I shouldn't have to smell and breathe that while I'm eating. I will not go back if people are still allowed to smoke in the outdoor seating area.
The spicy chai sauce on the mussels was amazing. Get it and lots of bread for dipping and you'll be happy. The food otherwise was just good, nothing special. The service was incredibly slow."

"This is a lovely restaurant, occupying the rare middle ground downtown between the expense account/special occasion places and mass market chains and chain-like places. Outstanding selection of beers and wines and featuring mussels are prepared in a half dozen unique styles with the best fries in town. There are 8 or 10 other plates and a small selection od sanfwiches as well. All are delicious. The problem is that it all adds up very quickly and ends up being quite pricey for the ambiance of the place. A fine evening--but proceed with caution!"

"Although I did not indulge in the mussels in white sauce, they surely looked delicious from the sounds my colleagues were making. My selection was excellent, though. The waiters - especially the fellow from Morocco and the other one from Guatemala, were simply charming. The rugged look and the classy feel came together quite nicely and was a perfect fit for the K Street crowd. Definitely going back there again and taking more clients out to dinner. You can even hear the non intrusive jazz over the various conversations!"

"A great restaurant. Was really looking forward to this. I'm in the northeast for a limited time and really hoped this was going to be special and it was. My wife and I shared the Penn Cove Muscles in Classic White Wine. Very tasty but perhaps a little too creamy but the muscles were so fresh and cooked perfectly. For main, we shared the Plateau a la Beck comprising a whole lobster, 8 oysters, 4 large shrimp, 4 clams, 8 muscles and a calamari salad. A little too much for the 2 of us but everything was just so fresh and tasted great. Service however was not as fantastic as the food. Waiter did his job but was not very helpful. Did not take time to explain dishes and just rushed through our orders. Overall, fantastic! We will return."

"We loved the restaurant! The food was delicious and there was a ton of it for a decent price. Only mild complaint was that the service was a bit lackadaisical. Other than that we had a great time and would love to go back soon. Definitely try the onion & shallot soup and any of the mussels."

"We where there with a group of friends from out of town, we had a reservation at 7:30 pm, we got seated right away, Sarah our waitress was great, made excellent recommendations, especially the Crab cake specials was delicious, my girlfriend had the Bolognese mussels, and it was perfect...The manager Moataz came to the table and made an excellent suggestion of a Burgundy Pinot noir, he was really Professional and his recommendation was perfect, what a choice, I look forward to come back"

"I went here for my sons birthday. The mussels were great as were the brussel sprouts too. They had a nice wine list but it was very pricey the mark up was high by the glass and by the bottle. The noise level was loud. I would go back for the food it compensated for the noise and the pricey wine."

"Despite making our reservation more than a month in advance on OpenTable and confirming it the afternoon before, we still had to wait almost 30 minutes to be seated. Our waitress was absolutely fantastic and accommodating. However, we did have some other problems with our food. One member of our party requested that his lamb be cooked well-done; he had to send the meat back to the kitchen twice before it finally reached well-done (and it was still pretty rare when he gave up and just ate it). We did get free desserts because of the mix-up!
Overall, the ambience was great, but other aspects of the service and food left something to be desired."

"Overall, my experience was excellent. The waiter was very knowledge about both the food and drink menus. I am not a huge beer drinker, however, my date was and he was impressed. Our waiter was very attentive. Anticipated our needs and gave us enough time to savor our meal. He gave great suggestions and we never felt rushed. I would definitely come back."

"We went to celebrate graduation. Appetizers (cheeses and tortellini) were fantastic along with the endless baskets of bread. Entrees were also very good (especially the brussel sprouts as a side). The strip steak was probably the most disappointing of the entrees as this particular steak was not a great cut of meat - not bad enough to send back but could have been better."

"Great Food and scence for an unassuming part of Downtown DC.
Wine list could be a little more robust but the beer menu is the best in town.
Simple menu but awesome cuisine! There is a lively vibe here and the bar area is down right crowded. So if your looking for a quite dinner go to the Chef's flagship restaurant Marcel's but if you are looking for a lively Bistro with great food and drink make a reservation for Beck...you will need one to score a table! Enjoy ...I did!"

"My wife and I started with the mushroom gratin mussells and blue points and a bottle of wine. Everything was fantiastic. For dinner I ordered the duck which was a verbal special, my wife ordered the whole sea bass ( which is cut in the back so I dont know why its listed as a whole fish), and a side of mac and cheese. My duck was clearly overcooked or in the window too long. I never gave a temp but the duck came out med well to well and was covered in the cherry sauce I think to cover up the fact it was over cooked. My wifes fish came out under greens so you couldnt see it I think to cover up the fact that it was mangled being fileted and she pulled out about 6 fish bones, and finally the mac & cheese never came out."

"We regularly go to Brasserie Beck for both Mother's and Father's Day. As a matter of fact, we have been there for the past 5 years for those special occasions. This year was especially delicious because they had a fish (cod) and chips special that litrally melted in our mouths. That is no to mention the delicious crab cake Benedict and the delicious Belgian waffles. This place is definitely worth visiting!"

"The table was ready when we walked in the door, very prompt service with suggestions offered..(they were great)..everything was timed perfectly, wine selection and suggestions by the manager were spot on...overall an awesome first time experience looking forward to the next visit!!"

"I went last friday for date night and as always, the food was outstanding. We ordered the mediterranean mussels and I had a pappardelle with lamb while my partner had the special (seafood). We love the beer selection. Service was a little rough, this time, however. The patio was busy so I don't know if our waiter was just overseated or undertrained, but it was difficult for us and our neighbors to get his attention. This is NOT typical for us at Brasserie Beck and we hope it was an isolated event."

"Excellent place. Very welcoming staff. Made to feel comfortable by every staff member.
Rack of Lamb outstanding...sizable portion perfectly prepared. Every table filled yet we sat over dinner for nearly 3 hours without ever being rushed...the authentic French approach to dining. Loved this place. Recommend it highly.

"Food needed to be better seasoned and more flavorful. Would have preferred it to be cooked that way rather than having to ASK ior salt at the table. And there aren't even salt & peper shakers or a pepper mill at the table. My dish needed more herbs, garlic and salt. Very disappointed with my meal of escargot (as an appetizer) and pappardelle with lamb ragu. Also found our waiter to be surly. Brought a group of 6 colleagues there to celebrate an upcoming retirement. Wish I had planned our event elsewhere. Thankfully the guest of honor enjoyed his mussels entre and the octopus appetizer was very good as well.."

"Because we live in Annapolis, restaurants on the east side of D.C. are a plus. We have eaten at Brasserie Beck multiple times both at a table and at the bar and never have been disappointed. We mostly go for the mussels but have eaten other courses and the food has been uniformly wonderful as has the service. If we don't have wine we will try one of the multiple beers available on tap. Brasserie Beck has become one of our default places to eat both because of the high quality of the food and the location within the city. We definitely will go back again."

"Brasserie Beck is hindered by it's all too frequent shortcomings at too many turns. The food, while prepared well and flavorful, falls short of replicating the taste and feel of genuine Franco Belgian cooking. From reading the menu, I expect I will be getting the food I love on my EU trips, but in practice the dishes always remind me a little too much of home. The wait staff do a nice job of meeting your needs, but they can't make up for the fact that too many tables feel like they're crammed in to a space which should never really have been a restaurant: too many tables are to close to a wait station, emergency exit, or tucked away in a corner that makes you feel like you've been exiled."

"Brasserie Beck was originally recommended to me for the saucy wait staff, but I quickly learned that it was a "go to" spot for a fine lunch, and later a great dinner. My midwestern sister loved it as a prelude to seeing Jersey Boys at the National Theater. It has the bonus of being in a neighborhood that still has adequate street parking. Mr. Wiedmaier's lineup of restaurants is well served having Brasserie Beck as a headliner in a formerly underserved part of town."

"Brasserie Beck was recommended to me as a great restaurant to go to, best known for its mussels. The drinks are great too, with amazing cocktails and a large wine list; my boyfriend has found one of his favorite beers while dining here, as well. The service is prompt, despite busy nights, and each server and tender pays great attention to your drink refills and bread replenishment. My experiences here have been consistently satisfactory, and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a date night. Or just some great food."

"For me Beck has always been a sweet spot, primarily because of the food. The table and bar service is good, but every so often you get someone who brings the attitude to their job, but to Beck's credit they are gone. So it seems they do a worthy clean-up effort to a 'lousy' hiring effort. They seem to tinker too much with the beer list; no sooner do you settle into a beer than they discontinue it for some lame reason."

"In my opinion, best to stay with the classic mussels and Belgian fries, both of which are well executed. They have brought back the curry flavored mayonnaise that for some unexplainable reason had been retired. Has a dozen Belgian beers on tap, which give plenty of options (or delve into their several hundred in bottles). Didn't see the steak tartare that used to be on the menu. The daily specials are worth examining. Had braised beef ribs which were tender and went perfectly with the bone marrow side."

"This was my first time at Becks for brunch and the experience was terrific. Not only does the restaurant start you out with their oh so yummy bread basket, but the coffee here is DIVINE. My friend and I drank the entire large french pot. The servers were very happy to accomodate our request for warm milk (for the coffee). We told the servers that we were sharing out entrees and the portions came out split in two on different plates without prompting -- what a great detail. Now to the food -- the crab cake benedict is awesome: perfectly poached egg and a lovely crabcake. We also shared the waffle of the day which, on that day, came with a cherry pear compote (so yummy, sweet without being overbearingly so). Go have brunch at BB!"
