Mare
Mare, Italian for ‘sea’ , opened in the summer of 2005 in Boston’s historic North End - only 100 steps away from Paul Revere’s house. Mare has quickly become this city’s most acclaimed seafood restaurant with accolades such as “One of the Top 80 Tables in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler and “Go to List” Food & Wine.
Mare is not your typical North End restaurant, the menu is light and healthy it treats all the ingredients with respect in order to highlight their natural flavors and not cover them up. Further, Mare’s modern interior, unbeatable city views and solicitous service draw crowds of all ages for the grilled Octopus, homemade pastas, whole roasted sea bass, stuffed lobster and more. Beer, 33% organic wine list and cordials served.

"The food was absolutely delicious and filling. The buffalo mozzarella and tomato was mouth watering and light. The stuffed clams were a little tiny but the stuffing was spicy and tasty. I had the lobster casserole and it was very good. Served in a mini cast iron skillet with a cup of the butter to pour on top. Had a lot of lobster pieces and the stuffing was moist and delicious. The swordfish dish was very good as well. The broth was very tasty and I could've just had a bowl of that and their bread to dip. The tables are pretty close to each other so you don't get much in privacy at your table but you can see what others are having to help in your decision."

"The atmosphere and service detracted from a mostly enjoyable meal. The restaurant is tiny and has that North End quaintness, but TVs were blaring on either side of the bar, which made the noisy room even noisier and made it feel more like a generic red sauce place than the nice seafood restaurant it's trying to be. Server seemed bored, had to flag her down to order, and we received the wrong appetizer. We then had to ask for share plates and silverware after receiving our appetizers. Halibut and flourless chocolate cake were standouts."

"The weather outside was great and with all the windows open, it was a perfect night at Mare. The oysters and muscles for apps were great and the dinner that followed did not disappoint either. Good wine and bubbles were available as well. The staff was attentive (without being aggressive). Looking forward to going back!"

"We were sat immediately and greeted at our table right away. The food was outstanding from the calamari, shrimp to the oysters. The bread! My youngest and I had the lemon pasta....we had actually returned to this restaurant because we had had this dish here before and were not disappointed. My husband had the seafood risotto which he loved and our other daughter had the wild boar pasta. She said it was delicious. We will definitely be returning."

"My mother loves oysters and my father loves italian food, so Mare was like hitting 2 birds with one stone. My parents were in town for the weekend and we had a great time at Mare.
Mare serves up probably about 10-15 different varieties of oysters at any given time as well as clams, shrimp, etc on the raw bar. While most of the appetizers and entrees incorporate seafood of some kind, there are also options for that one person that just doesn't eat fish.
Additionally, I have to say, the service was excellent. The whole staff seemed to be under control and know exactly what was going on despite a VERY VERY busy night. The food was timed perfectly, the wine continued to flow, and all the entrees came out piping hot. Salud!"

"this was our first trip to Mare. The oysters and cherrystones were wonderful, as were the steamed Thai mussels. The midday prosecco added lots. The only not-perfect note: the lobster roll. For lobster roll perfection, go around the corner to Neptune Oyster Bar. That said, we'll certainly go back to Mare, and we recommend it."

"Went up to boston with my girlfriend for the weekend. This was the first place we ate at and hands down the best. We had the clams, mussels, shrimp cocktail (biggest I've ever seen), and king crab leg (also biggest I've seen) from the raw bar and it was all amazing. Finished it off with a lobster roll which was the best I've ever had! No complaints at all it was truly perfect."

"The highlights of this place are the contents of the raw bar and that seems to be the main showpiece at all the tables. A very wide and tasty selection of oyster along with the usual other contents. Pastas were also very good. The traditional lobster roll looked good from a distance"

"I went to Mare to celebrate an occasion with my boyfriend. The restaurant is very small but all restaurants in the North End are like that. The tables were put very closely together so I felt like I was eavesdropping to the table next to me conversation at times. They have an excellent variety of oysters here, which was a plus! Although the appetizer menu was a bit overpriced. We ordered the calamari that was a special - that was very delicious. For entrees, my boyfriend ordered the risotto de mare, which was fantastic. I ordered the wild boar pappardelle and I was not a huge fan of it.
Overall, I would definitely come here again but will order a different entree this time!"

"My husband and I quite enjoyed our evening at Mare. The staff were very pleasant. We commenced our meal with oysters which were exceptionally fresh. I followed with a crab cocktail which was disappointing as the crab, which was very generous in its' serving, was overwhelmed by the flavour of the red onions within the salad. My husband faired better with his scallops, which he found delicious. My entree was salmon which was beautifully cooked as was my husband's whole sea bass. We did not eat dessert. Our only complaint really was about the noise level. A small restaurant with quite a few very vocal diners makes for a noisy evening! However we did like the restaurant."

"Great food and service. I loved the very energetic atmosphere. This is not a place to go for a romantic experience....rather, you'll feed off the energy from the patrons around you. Tables are close together - barely enough room to squeeze between and you'll have to lean in toward the table to have a conversation with your date. I had the seafood cannelloni and enjoyed every bite. Reservations were on a Friday evening and I'm glad I had them. There was a long wait for those who didn't..."

"This is my third visit to Mare, but it was my worst. I might visit again, but will avoid the main dish I selected.

"Went with our daughter on her recommendation for Dad's birthday. Great view of Faneuil Hall and Boston skyline through large, spotless window walls! Oysters were outstanding! Disappointed couldn't get a bloody Mary, unless with flavored sweet vodka, but the Italian wine was excellent! The seafood was fresh, beautifully presented. I loved the tuna encrusted. The birthday boy had linguine with shellfish...could have been a larger serving of shellfish, but he said it was very tasty. As a restauranteur, that was quite a complement! We will gladly return, even if the prices were a little steep for the side and fish on the plate. It was very nice to note they brought out a candle with the desserts we ordered, too!"

"Mare Oyster Bar was great for restaurant week. They offered oysters on a half shell plus some other great seafood options. Majority of my table ordered the lobster roll, which was delicious (and mostly lobster) plus the bread was also delicately toasted. For dessert, the flourless chocolate cake was amazing with some hazelnut ice-cream to top it off. Our waiter was great and very attentive. The restaurant is very small, like most north end restaurants. But the ambiance was nice, very good for date night."

"The appetizers alone were worth the visit. We had the best calamari we have ever tasted, not to mention, the pan-seared scallops and the Thai-style mussels. The lobster rolls (both hot and cold options) were packed with big chunk lobster meat - very tasty. The sea bass entree got rave reviews from everyone who had it.

"Often times, restaurants will offer a 'restaurant week' specific menu, but was happy that Mare offerred dishes from their regular menu. The portion sizes were good for a 3-course meal. A bit disappointed with the usually delicious Lobster roll. The bread was cold as if it was toasted some time beforehand. Otherwise, the chcolate cake w/ gelato was tasty. The service was well balanced and wasn't rushed. H="

"Wonderful seafood, beautifully prepared, fresh and amazing. Great variety. Each of us thought each course was fabulous. The appetizers were crisp, ultra fresh including the littlenecks on the half shell. Unexpectedly, the dessert (flourless chocolate cake with hazelnut ice cream) was one of the best I've ever had! I look forward to going back."

"We had the restaurant week menu. I ordered my favorite linguini alle vongole, which was ok but I like it prepared with white wine and no tomatoes. The menu, I beieve said white wine. The oysters were good as was the seafood appetizer. The raw shellfish platters looked very good."

"The server made us feel so not welcomed. We had to ask for something that was forgotten with each course. She seemed more interested in what was going on outside and could care less about serving our table. The spaghetti with mushroom sauce was not flavorful at all. Think it best to stick with fish choices. Too bad because the atmosphere was wonderful and we were all let down by the whole experience."

"The food is deservedly raved about in many magazines. We found it superb. The clams were heavenly. We had them fried, on pasta, and in a chowder with roasted halibut. Oh my, the halibut was a fantastic dish. The restaurant is lovely but tiny. If you need elbow room to feel comfy, this is not for you. The service was friendly, un-intrusive, and efficient. Highly recommended."

"THe restaurant is small but lovely with windows all around and on a corner - great for people watching in the North End. If in someplace other than the North End, it would be a neighborhood gem but the North End is full of them! I don't think it is a great place for kids - saw a few there but the food is a bit too nice/expensive for little ones. They have TV's with sports on and a nice little bar. A great place for seafood. A great Restaurant Week menu - very good food for the money. The wait staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive."

"I understand it was busy but we were so tightly squeezed that my chair was bumped by the servers literally every 5 minutes. My jacket fell off several times and it was just horrible to enjoy the environment. The food was good, it was just the seating and the fact that they tried to squeeze an unfair amount of people in. Also, with that small of space, if a customer is taking an unnatural amount of space, they should be notified so that the person sitting behind them doesn't have to suffer the consequences.
This wasn't as bad but we were also seated at least a full 34 minutes after our reservation time."
