Max's Café was built in 1890 as a shoe store. In 1912, 34 North Burlington Street reopened as Leisinger's Saloon for the next 25 years even through prohibition (as a "soft drink establishment"). In 1937, Leisinger's Saloon passed through the family & was renamed Max's Cafe; it’s name for the next 65 years. In 1977, a new simply prepared fresh seafood menu transformed Max's Cafe into Max’s Seafood Café. The neighboring building was acquired to seat the growing number of patrons from both sides of the Delaware River, often forming lines around the corner, waiting to enjoy fresh flounder, shrimp, clams, & most of all, Steamed Mussels! Max's reputation grew for the next 22 years before age & neglect left it in a state of disrepair. The bar restaurant closed in July of 1998 & remained dormant for 2 ½ years. Refurbished in late 2000, Max's Seafood Cafe reopened on June 2, 2001 to continue its tradition of hospitality, impeccably fresh seafood, & most of all Steamed mussels.
"Max's Seafood Cafe was a pleasant find. Loved the atmosphere, woody, brick and quaint. The menu provided a very varied and large enough selection to pick from. My tilapia was excellent, fresh and very tasty with its accompanying sauce. The coffee was pretty good as well, although it would have been nice to see a bit more fruit related desserts along with the many cakes slices they offer. The host was very pleasant and our server was very good. The only minus for me was sitting too long on a wooden chair can become painful for me. (A cushioned chair would have been great!) Aside from that one personal quirk this restaurant & bar is a real find and an enjoyable place to dine in. Would surely go again."

"Server was friendly, knowledgable, and attentive without being annoying. Ample time to enjoy each course without being rushed. The raw oyster sampler was fantastic and fresh. The mussels were cooked and seasoned perfectly with plenty of bread to sop up the juices. The sole was filleted table side and my husband said it was delicate and tasty. The lobster ravioli were loaded with cheese and lobster and a nice size. Will definitely go back to try some other fish dishes."

"Mussels with Thai broth are WONDERFUL. Also try the grilled asparagus - perfectly tender, not overcooked, just a touch of grill marks. Well done. The fried oysters were a little heavy and could have been crisper."

"The waiter was extemely inattentive despite there being only 4-5 tables filled (and another waiter working). The mussels were very good. The rest of the food was okay, with no seasoning and pretty bland save for the lobster tail. Certainly not worth almost $30 for the broiled combo."

"Early dinner on a Monday was very quite. If you like mussels with a garlic, white sauce, stick with that. The Irish mussels with cabbage, sausage and potatoes although novel couldn't match the traditional ones they serve. The mussels are big and yet tender. Highly recommend."

"Have been going to Max's for thirty to forty years and have NEVER been disappointed. This was the first time I didn't get the mussels in some form. The broiled seafood combo was excellent and was dates lobster ravioli was so good it was hard not stealing some when ever she wasn't paying attention. The orange creamcycle cake made me think I was a kid again. The service was impeccable and once again I have to say "Max's well done thanks"."

"Food was great as always. They have changed their menu to al la carte so nothing extra is included, but they haven't lowered prices. We had a server that was on his 1 st night, you would think he never served before, this was not the case. I was very disapointed in a few things, had a few issues and a manager never stopped at our table. I also watched a little old couple wait 10 minutes to be seated (they had 3 tables with guests at the time) i dont know whats going on at Max's but it did leave a lot to be desired. It was like our measley table of 2 didnt count. O We had gone thevprior week for resturant week and it was great. It was extremly busy but our server Bob handeled it remarably. If you go request him. Food was great. Staff no!"

"It took over 30 minutes for our server to come over to us after we were already sat...and it wasn't busy in there. The food was ok. I went for restaurant week but I would not return for full price. My entree was excellent, but every other course lacked. The muscles soup had no seasoning, the noodles to my appetizer were mushy, and the white chocolate raspberry bread pudding just did not work. I will not return. The restaurant itself had character and I loved how old it was. It had great character."

"Typically, I love this restaurant - great food, great service, fun bar scene - but Friday night was awful. It was some sort of restaurant week - so instead of Max's great menu, they had a very limited menu, service was very, very slow. Took almost an hour to get our appetizers, when the entree arrived the rice wasn't cooked, the mahi mahi was good, a friends crab cake was burnt on the bottom. Not a good experience this time around - but typically this place is great - I just think they were overwhelmed with the amount of people in this usually sleepy joint."

"A group of us from work went to Max's for Restaurant week - the place was amazing - a real neighborhood gem! The seafood was outstanding,we had the mussels and bacon wrapped scallops as appetizers, they were fantastic! The special was Branzino, which most of us got. They filleted at the table and it was delicious. One of our group even asked the waiter to choose something for her because she couldn't decide and he did a great job of bringing her a plate with a sampling of different seafoods. The food was just scrumptious. They also have a great beer and wine menu. Our server, Bob, was attentive, friendly and very funny. He made our experience there even better. We will definitely be making that a regular place to go."

"We went for a special menu diner featuring Heritage wines. We have been to Max's many, many times and had visited the winery before as well, but together...OMG what a night. Every course and wine pairing (5 in all) were delightful and easily one of the best dinners ever. The only slight downside was the private room was a little tight and service started out slow and got really fast at the end, but with that said it was a great event, highly recommended. If you get the chance to go -don't miss it"

"I asked for a quiet table for two and they did just that and that was nice, The service was a little slow,The food was good but nothing special,I would recomend ordering beer over wine by the glass because you get very little for the $,The ambiance was very nice,I most likely will give them another try in the future."

"I found this on Open Table and from the reviews it's sounded like a great place. We arrived at 6pm for our reservation and there were only 2 other tables occupied. The bartender was the waiter and bartender while the owner was having a conversation at the bar. We had to wait about 5 minutes to be seated. Then it was 30 min before the waiter even came over to say hello or take our drink order. The food was very good but there was just a lot of waiting time in the beginning. I will however visit them again."

"We have visited Max's many times in the last 10 years. The quality of the food is slipping, not what it used to be. Service was poor. We went to Max's for what was advertised as the Mardi Gras week menu and found nothing much. Jambayla and Cajun Clams Casino were already on the regular menu and the special was Chicken Etouffe. The soup of the day was chicken noodle with rice, what ever that was? Isn't this supposed to be a seafood restaurant? We were disappointed that there were no Cajun items for Mardi Gras. The menu also needs to be changed, it has become stale. Also, very nice sesame topped french bread was served with the meal but it was ice cold. I wouldn't expect this even in a diner. Not a good evening."

"What a great restaurant. It is hard to find good seafood this far from the shore and not in Phily. Max's is that place. The Max's sampler appetizer was wonderful. The Cajun clam's casino were the best clams casino I've ever had. Cape May salts nice and fresh. Seafood isn't cheap, but the portions were large considering other restaurants around with similar prices. Service great, nice atmosphere. Definitely a gem of a restaurant."

"The food as always was fantastic but the service did not compare to our last visit at Max's. The sever had no personality, very blah. The server also spilled salad dressing on my dad's back from reaching behind him to serve my mom her salad. Since we were celebrating my Dad's 87 birthday we ordered champagne. The ice bucket didn't come out until the champagne was almost finished. The meal was great, but the service left a bad taste in our mouths. We will think twice before going again."
