Max's Café was built in 1890 as a shoe store. In 1912, 34 North Burlington Street reopened as Leisinger's Saloon for the next 25 years even through prohibition (as a "soft drink establishment"). In 1937, Leisinger's Saloon passed through the family & was renamed Max's Cafe; it’s name for the next 65 years. In 1977, a new simply prepared fresh seafood menu transformed Max's Cafe into Max’s Seafood Café. The neighboring building was acquired to seat the growing number of patrons from both sides of the Delaware River, often forming lines around the corner, waiting to enjoy fresh flounder, shrimp, clams, & most of all, Steamed Mussels! Max's reputation grew for the next 22 years before age & neglect left it in a state of disrepair. The bar restaurant closed in July of 1998 & remained dormant for 2 ½ years. Refurbished in late 2000, Max's Seafood Cafe reopened on June 2, 2001 to continue its tradition of hospitality, impeccably fresh seafood, & most of all Steamed mussels.

"What a special dining experience! Max's exhibits rich history in a friendly ambiance and a satisfying broad menu! The mussels are extraordinary, of course, but do venture to try other dishes with confidence. Service was four star. We'd come back for sure!!!"

"My family and I thoroughy enjoyed our St Pat's day at Max's .We were seated right away,which was extremely important as our party included someone on a cane and a senior citizen. Both would not have been able to wait,if that was the case.We had the option of anything off the menu{food was great!} as well as specials,which is not always the case on a holiday. The servers were great and very attentive .There was a great ambiance,we could hear the Irish music yet were ablt to carry on a conversation .Thanks,Max's for a great evening"

"We decided to try brunch here as they had just started doing it and we were not dissappointed, my fritta was the best i ever had and my wife's dock worker entree was almost as big as her, was not too crowded and really enjoyed it so much we came back for dinner the next nite. The dinner was just as good as brunch although our server was a little sleepy over all was a great nite and we will return here in the future as we just moved nearby."

"We were quite impressed on a recent visit to Max's. Because it was a holiday, they offered only a price-fixe menu so we didn't get to sample a great variety of foods but what we had was very good. A hot appetizer sampler, including clams, shrimp and oysters, was very tasty. The surf (crab stuffed lobster tail) and turf (filet) was cooked exactly to order for both in our party who got it. Sides are often an after thought to the main entree but not so for our meal...all were enjoyed. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and if we lived closer, we'd be in there...or in the bar at least...every week. Parking is very limited and we did have to park on the street, a fair distance from the restaurant...our only issue."

"Overall food is fair to good, nothing to write home about. Service is fair waitress only shows up to deliver food and check never asked if we wanted another drink or how was the food, Hostess not very accomodating or friendly. Nice atmosphore. Although touted as a fresh seafood restaurant, the freezer is where they get their fish."

"Food was excellent as always. My only comment would be that they need to consider doing something about the check-in area. You have to walk through the bar and restaurant to get there, it serves as the waitress station as well. It becomes very crowded, very quickly and I'm sure it annoys the nearby diners as well."

"Went to Max's the night before Valentine's Day. The place was packed! The food was wonderful as always but because of the holiday crowd, they had added many 2-seaters throughout the room so my husband and I got stuck at a table in the center of the room which made for a very busy night with all the foot traffic around us. Also, the waitress, who I think was new b/c I've never seen her there, forgot our appetizer and really didn't seem to care. Unfortunately, one bad night at Max's makes for a bad review, but please rest assure that the dozens of other times we have gone, it's been great. I just don't recommend it for Valentine's Day."

"We have talked about going to this "diamond-in-the-rough", located a stone's throw from the Walt Whitman Bridge in Gloucester City. The experience did not disappoint. Free parking in the lot across the street was welcome, the lunch menu was impressive and very inexpensive for what we ordered. The gumbo was luscious, loaded with chunks of shrimp and sausage, and tangy enough that the optional tobasco sauce was not needed. The blackened catfish special (not on the menu but recommended by our waitress) was meaty and full-flavored. My wife ordered the red mussels and was very pleased with the flavor of the sauce and the meatiness of the mussels.
An outstanding draft and bottled beer list was notable.
We will definitely return...soon!"

"I have been to Max's 3 times in the past 2 years. I love the ambiance and the food, however the wait for the dinner to arrive is far too long. This past weekend, we were seated for our 7:30 reservation, had ordered and received drinks by 8. That was all fine and good. Our appetizers arrived in a timely manner. Dinner was not served until 9:30 and hour after we had finished our appetizers. Did not leave the restaurant until 10:30."

"Our first visit to Max's will be the first of many! In past years we have done New Years dinner at many different restaurants with a Pre-Fix menu and the choices were limited. New Years Eve menu at Max's was full of variety and many choices. Service was good, sometimes a little too ambitious with removal of "finished" plates, we enjoy lingering after eating.
The chef prepared our appetizer's, salad's and dinner's to perfection, Crab Cakes, Mussels and Blackened Grouper and one of the tastiest Caesar Salads.
We are European Beer Lover's and the selection was unexpectedly good.
We live in South Jersey, Voorhees Area and work and dine out in Philadelphia weekly, Max's is a "neighborhood gem"."

"We love Max's anyway but decided to go there to celebrate the January birthdays in our family. My daughter is in a wheelchair and we arrived the table was ready with a chair removed so that we could place her in that area. That was very thoughtful and considerate.
The food is always good at Max's. You will find me there at least once a month. The mussels white are fabulous."

"What a genuine surprise. The restaurant is located in a residential neighborhood but is far from a locals only place. It truly exceeded all of my expectations. The service was absolutely outstanding, very attentive without being overbearing. The food was very fresh, large portions, excellently prepared. I ordered the fixed price menu which was an exceptional value for the amount and quality of the food provided. The menu is extensive, with something for everyone. I would not hesitate to return to this restaurant and am just sorry it is not closer to my home!"

"We travel 45 minutes to get to Max's and it is worth every minute. The food is always the highest quality, service excellent and atmosphere good. We love the specials as they are always so fresh and unusual. We took friends visiting from Georgia and they were impressed with the food and architecture of the restaurant. "This is the second time we have come to Max's prior to a show in Philadelphia! This time friends joined us. The bar and resturant have all the ambiance of a great center-city eatery with the exposed brick and historic bar. The food was excellent and moderately priced compared to "the City". We got there early because of our 8:00 PM showtime. We parked easily in their lot across the street, got in, ate before the crowd, and still had plenty of time to have a leisurely meal. It is so close to either bridge, that we were in Philadelphia, parked and at the Academy of Music before the doors opened! In these economic times, it is a good way to share. We live here in Jersey, so we are supporting our local economy directly, and the Arts!"
