Hy's Steak House - Waikiki
Hy's Steak House is an award winning restaurant in the heart of Waikiki. Open in 1976, Hy's has been a favorite of locals and visitors for 30 years.
Hy's specialties include Kiawe broiled USDA Prime Beef, succulent Lamb, great seafood as well as tableside preparations of many classic dishes. Hy's boasts an exquisite wine list with an emphasis on reds from the most reputable vineyards from around the world.
The ambience is Old-World, classic and very comfortable. Hy's is renown for its signature showcase steak broiler, where the steaks are expertly broiler over Kiawe wood. Kiawe is a Hawaiian hardwood that burns at a very high temperature and adds the perfect flavor to the broiled prime beef.
In Hy's library lounge there is live music nightly from 2 of Hawaii's top entertainers. Valet parking. Proper dress required.

"Hys is always a great place to dine. Excellent food. Preparation of wonderful salads and desserts at your table makes the experience even more enjoyable. Our waiter was Art who has waited on us the last three times we have been to Hys. Art is fantastic, so ask to sit at one of his tables you will not be sorry."

"Hy's Steakhouse is an excellent choice for well prepared steaks, lamb, and excellent service. The wine list is comprehensive, and the staff is extremely professional and courteous. The ambiance is enhanced with the musical talent of Audy Kimura. Especially delightful is the salad and dessert preparation table side. I recommend Hy's for a romantic dinner or as an opportunity to enable children to experience fine dining."

"Once again we celebrated a birthday along with Mother's Day. We had a table close to Augie so we could listen to him or converse. Food was very good, I switched from my Delmonico to prime rib which was tasty. Hy's is a tradition in our family and our extended family. Mainland relatives are envious when we say we are going to Hy's."

"It looked like a library with soft music playing. Audy Kimura played the guitar was very good and the music was very relaxing. The Lobster Bisque soup was very delicious. The steak was good but I think someone had a heavy hand on the black pepper. We come here at least once a year and enjoy their appetizers, the dinner menu is always the same, as they are known for their meats. The crabcake was delicious even though it was only 1 crabcake. Service was well-timed and friendly."

"4-29-2013 I celebrated my birthday at Hy's and it was still the same great restaurant I remembered it was some 20+ years ago! We had filet mignon--Steak Neptune and Hy's Garlic Steak. Both steaks were very soft and cooked to perfection. We had a salad and finished everything off with the Bananas Foster. If you never had bananas foster, you MUST try this. Our waiter, Neal, is a real pro at making the best bananas foster! He also brought me a slice of Hy's homemade cheese cake with strawberry sauce for my birthday. Oh, did I mention what a great waiter Neal is? Other servers were great too. I would definitely recommend Hy's to anyone celebrating a special occasion or just because. They know how to make you feel very special."

"It was a little hard to find off the street but was the nicest atmosphere we visited in Honolulu. What you would expect for fine dining. There is no such thing as formal dining in Hawaii. Steaks were very good. We felt rushed but that is sometimes expected for the first seating. We don't like our courses to be served on top of each other while we are enjoying our cocktails. We could have requested that we not be rushed. Reasonably priced."

"It was our 29th wedding anniversary and my husband insisted on his favorite steak spot. We got to sit at our usual table and we were attended to by a very professional (yet friendly) staff. We threw caution to the wind and ate all the delicious things that our doctors warned us about. My husband got to indulge in his favorite - lobster bisque; you don't often see a grown man get emotional about a bowl of soup. You should have seen his face when he got his steak!
We live and work quite a distance from Waikiki, so we don't get to Hy's as often as we'd like, but we can always depend on them for a wonderful dining experience. Thank you, Hy's...hope to see you again real soon."

"The maitre 'd sat my wife and me in the "tourist" section. Ask the waiter for wine information from the limited wine menu and he said, "I am not a wine person." Ordered scallop appetizer and 3 of the 6 mediocre breaded pieces were cold in the center. The Chateaubriand was delivered and the waiter poured oil over all the vegetables and beef to flambe, but he really just oiled everything. The meat was ordered as medium but when sawed, not cut,the meat it was very rare. We sent the meat back to finish cooking. When the waiter returned the meat it actual was very good. The vegetables were hard as a rock. If you want a great steak, go to a great steak house, not here. This is the poorest steak house we have ever been too. Do not go here."

"Hy's is a good option if you want to have Cattle Company grade (very good but not exquisite) food in a fancier men's club-like (leather and wood) atmosphere. You'll pay more than double, but your waiters will be wearing tuxes and the people sitting next to you won't be in t-shirts.
We enjoyed the escargot and salmon carpaccio appetizers a lot. I would recommend the Delmonico steak, which is tender, buttery, and tasty. The rack of lamb is also excellent. The caesar salad is risky because it depends on the skill of your waiter. Ours was young and over-applied the lemon juice. Good coffee. Decent desserts.
$5 valet parking only."

"This place was GREAT! It was my husbands Birthday and from the second we enter they were wishing him happy Birthday. The staff was extremely nice and welcoming. The Food was AMAZING! I had Prime Rib and I highly recommend it, the hubby had rack of lamb and said it was great as well. They surprised us with a dessert and candle for the hubby and then took our picture and it was printed out before we left and given to us. I am not sure which was better the service or the food. As we left the staff was still wishing my hubby Happy Birthday and they were quit busy! We will be dining at Hy's again, hopefully sooner than later!!"

"Go to Hy's for that old time steak house feeling. Watch them grill your prime steaks over keawe right in the restaurant. Tuxedoed waiters, ceasar salad prepared properly at tableside, lots of dark wood paneling and non-invasive local guitar music as background add up to a dining experience from the past that can be savored in the present. Our waiter, Ernie, has been waiting at Hy's for 37 years and is a true treasure of reminder of old Honolulu."

"Although we arrived early, a table was ready. Our waiter was experienced, professional and friendly. He and his support staff provided unobtrusive attention throughout the meal.
The house wine, Jordan's Cab, was smooth and enjoyable. We had escargots, done with a traditional garlic butter, followed by my wife's favorite, rack of lamb, cooked to our preferences, with a tasty crust. My time in Australia has tended to spoil me for lamb, but I enjoyed Hy's rack. The baked potato was as expected and the veg were excellent.
We left room for Bananas Foster, expertly prepared and served. Overall very satisfying."

"Always excellent food and services, though valet services was a bit slow. Both drop off and pick up needed to wait a few minutes on thursday night. The restaurant was very busy ....only one valet guy."

"It's a classic, and never deveates on service, well almost never. I ordered an "onion soup gratinee" and the waitress looked at me like I was speaking french. She asked me to repeat myself twice and I said it's on the menu and she asked "oh is that what it says?" I thought she was new but found out later in the evening she'd been working there for six years. Ah, do your homework! Know what is on the menu!
The bartender jumped in later to assist in serving us, I think because it got busy, not because she was not capable. He was extraordinary. Multi-tasking and not making anyone feel neglected, proper and polite, informative. Made a darn good drink, he did.
Food was good, great, actually except "medium" is "rare" with some atti"

"Food was excellent as usual. This is the 3rd year in a row that my family has dined here on for my birthday. We were a little disappointed that the booths are not able to accomodate 5. Normally its just 4 of us. But I guess table configuration or capacity can't be helped. Service was a little slow this year. It feels like we waited a long time after completing our entrees to be offered a dessert menu and for the flambe to start being cooked after we ordered it. As I mentioned previously this is our 3rd year in a row dining on my birthday and my mother was a little disappointed that it wasn't acknowledged that we are returning guests. Even if it is only once a year."

"We have dined at Hy's many times however this will be our last time. Our food was lukewarm so we sent it back. We waited for a long time then finally our food was returned to us but there was no improvement. It seems our food was sitting around for a while before being served to us. Our server was apologetic though that didn't help our poor dining experience. The manager came by and comped two glasses of wine (wrong!). With the high prices they charge the manager should have done better knowing they screwed up. Hy's does not welcome you warmly and never acknowledges that you are a many time repeat customer. There's no love there that's for sure. Ruth's has much better service and your steak is sizzling hot when it is served to you"

"I went to Hy's for my anniversary and was very pleased with everything. Our server did a wonderful job at picking a wine that fit our tastes (white as my wife cannot have red). The steaks were cooked to perfection and fork tender. I have to say the blueberry cheese cake was really good and I wish now I had ordered one for the road. I whole heartedly recommend Hy's to anyone looking for a nice restaurant for any occasion!"

"We had a wonderful time at Hy's last weekend. My only concern was that I sat on dried food particles left on the chair of the booth. I normally wouldn't have probably noticed as I usually wear pants. However this evening, I was wearing a dress and felt the crumbs under my legs and on my hands as I scooted in the booth. The service was amazing and the staff does an incredible job at guest service. The food was also amazing and served perfectly. High quality product and taste. Thank you for a wonderful experience."
