"The ambiance is very nice. This is a very classy restaurant on the water and fitting for a special occasion. The food was good- but not outstanding or as special as one might expect for the price. The service was fine, but again not as outstanding as one expects from this restaurant.

We came here for my fathers 81st birthday and were given a choice table as well as a menu with Happy 81st Birthday printed on it- which was a nice touch."

"My dining experience was one of the best that I have had in Alexandria. My guests and I enjoyed the services, the seating, the ambiance and the food. One of the guests was being treated to dinner for his birthday (was also a first timer at Chart House) and thoroughly enjoyed himself. This was definitely a plus since he is such a picky eater. Great food and great service."

"It's been several years since I last visited. Were there not items of flounder and halibut on the menu then? I'm not a crab meat person, but it seemed all the entrees were served with crab. I regretted it. Ordered mahi-mahi as a last resort. Location and view were good. Food menu was just ok."

"We always enjoy the food at Charthouses, whether in the San Diego area or Alexandria, and this visit was no exception. Great locations for both places on the water — ocean and river. What was different was that we brought our 1-year-old grandson, who is usually very quiet. His patience ran out a bit early, but the waiter was very accommodating in getting us what we needed to placate him. All in all, a good overall experience."

"The salad bar was excellent. Brunch choices were limited. They had one french toast dish but everything else was eggs. A little more variety would have been nice. Service was just average. I have been here before and service was a lot better. Our waiter was nice but didn't go out of his way to do anything. I also had mentioned to him that we were there for my mother in laws birthday and I thought he may have acknowledged it, but they did not. The view was outstanding and that made everything worth it!"

"We had a lovely brunch on a sunny Sunday afternoon in March. We were seated at a window table in the cupola section of the restaurant, so it was quiet - and much quieter than the rest of the restaurant. The view was outstanding. Service was excellent. The brunch menu is limited but our selections were fine. I would certainly go to Chart House again if I could replicate these conditions. On a plebian note, the ladies room was busy, but well maintained by the staff throughout the afternoon."

"As always, it was a pleasure to dine at the Chart House. It reminds me of the Wharf on San Francisco Bay with the continous views and fine dining. The food is always fresh and delightful. And being a Seafood FOODIE, that is the most important part of my experience whenever I eat! Keep up the good work in making the servers an intregal part of the experience. They are helpful, knowledgeable, and I even have my favorites! I have requested a different server because of incompetence, only once though. If I know more about your menu, then I truly will not pay for your lack of knowledge, just a very good habit my parents taught me from childhood. Again, The Chart House is an excellent choice for all, singles, couples, & families."

"Chart house is first of all a beautiful place to dine. It gets rather busy but I guess that's expected. My wife and I had wonderful,romantic dinner there despite the fact that I made reservations and had to wait about a half hour to be seated but the excellent bar staff they have there remedied that problem. At the end of the day my wife and I will defiantly dining there in the future."

"Great food! Great service! I had a 2-yr-old sitting in our party and they werepreapred with a high chair, crayola and some material to write on. Richard, who attended to us, was superb! Lights can be a bit dark on the second floor -- maybe they can brighten it a little. We waited about 20 min even with a reservation as the place was packed. But overall, great experience. We always like to go here regardless of ocassions."

"Our party of four was deeply disappointed with not only the food (shrimp was tough, rice cold), but the service was awful. We had a reservation for 7:45, but weren't seated until 8:15. Waiter lost our order then found it. I guess the good news for the Chart House was that the restaurant was packed, but it was uncomfortably warm and noisy. We will never go there again."

"Lunch was great. Office party of six to celebrate a colleagues birthday. Mentioned in the birthday in my on-line reservation and the wait staff brought out cake slice w/candle at the end of our meal - with no prompting me - VERY NICE TOUCH! Food was delicious. Presentation was excellent. Atmosphere/Ambiance was also nice, with a fabulous view of the water and the Washington shoreline. Everyone enjoyed themselves and gave me kudos for selecting the restaurant. Expect return customers. Thanks!"

"I've been here before, a long time ago and have always loved the food. But I was very disappointed on how much the quality of food has changed. I ordered Prime Rib, and it had to be returned 3 times, because it was not cooked properly. The vegetables were not crisp at all and seemed as though they had been sitting in a pot for a while. The really annoying part was the waiter pushing a new frequent diner plan that cost $25 to join. Overall, this experience was very unstatisfying for my family and I."

"Overall the food was very good. My wife ordered prime rib and the cut with pretty pathetic. It tasted very good, but it a pitiful looking piece with a fair amount of fat. "My husband and I wen to the Chart House for our wedding anniversary and was pleasantly surprised by the staff. They gave us the best house in the table with a spectacular water front view. Our waiter acknowledged that it was our anniversary and congratulated us on our 6 years. He bought out dessert out with a candle and wished us many more years of happiness. His demeanor enhanced our experience drastically. Everyone made us fee special and acknowledged our 6 year milestone. The food was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS, the service was the best I've ever had, and the atmosphere was exactly what we had in mind for our romantic night out on the town. Thank you Chart House staff for helping make our anniversary special."

"We really enjoyed our meal and the great view. The service was very good as well. The only thing that I found odd was that when I asked for cocktail sauce for my shrimp, and tarter sauce for my crab cake (neither came with my meal), I kind of got the impression that this was an unusual request, and they didn't even have tarter sauce available. I am not sure that I can blame this on the restaurant really, but it was a bit strange. Not being a foodie, or a big seafood eater, I kind of felt like I asked for A1 sauce at a four star steak house!

We will go back even without the tarter sauce. :)"

"Magnificent! The partnership with the concierge at the Wyndham Resort in Alexandria made our Valentine's dinner a very special evening. The stuff lobster and lobster topped Chilean Bass were both well cooked, seasoned, and presented. The ambiance of sitting at a window seat while being warmed by the romatic fire in the fireplace made the evening very special. The service was top notch. "We have gone to Chart House for their brunch many times. We like the view of the river. I like the variety and freshness of the salad bar, which generally constitutes my meal by itself. On Sundays, they have lox on the salad bar, and caviar, and anchovies, chicken salad, radishes, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, many cheeses, several kinds of fruit, and many other pleasing items. The servers are very attentive (maybe a little too attentive sometimes). The best times to go are when you think everyone else in the world won't be there (for example, the Sunday after Valentine's Day or the Sunday after Mother's day -- everyone was there last week so isn't likely to come back right away). Their coffee is consistently bad, however."

"I made my reservation pretty early, hoping I'd get a decent table. However it seemed that they tried very hard to stuff an overflow of couples tables so close that you're rubbing elbows with a neighboring couple or constantly getting bumped with passing waiters.

Even though it was a busy weekend, I don't believe they should cram more tables in and let their ambiance suffer, especially being located on the water with beautiful decor. I felt that all the intended beauty of the restaurant was destroyed with a high concentration of tables.

The food wasn't great. I felt that my lobster was rubbery as if it was defrosted just 5 minutes before it hit my plate. My date's fish entree also had the same feel.

The service was excellent."

"The obvious value of this upscale seafood experience is in the location. One can enjoy panoramic views across the Potomac to DC, the Naval Laboratory, Wilson Bridge and National Harbor depending on seating location through the huge windows.

The service was also a huge standout in our evening. Upon being seated at an interim table for two the hostess noticed that a more private booth had just opened and asked us if we wanted to relocate. We never had an empty wine or water glass, while not feeling smothered by our pair of servers.

"My husband and I have gone to the Chart House for Mother's Day and two Valentine's celebrations in the past year or so and have always enjoyed the food. This time, though, I was a little disappointed in the music that was playing. It was just a little off-key for the Valentine's day crowd--not romantic at all. I love the salad bar but could not partake because we were seated upstairs at a tiny little table in the corner---which I hated and I didn't want to have to go up and down the stairs in heels to the salad bar. There were no flowers on the tables, just a dime-store candle holder. Not a lot of thought was put into the appearance and presentation of the table. Candles, flowers and ambiance goes a long way to impress."

"The oysters on the half shell and the clam chowder were both wonderful. The salad bar and spinach salad were good, but not great. The salad bar had great variety, but the lettuce looked a little wilted and old. This could be because it was the end of a snowstorm and they had trouble getting resupplied ... not sure. The prime rib was ok. The sweet and hot chilean sea bass was excellent, but the flavors were a little overpowering for the fish. The hot chocolate cake was just ok."

"I enjoy everything about the Chart House; I will get my one complaint, which is not a true complaint out of the way...while the food was very good, I would not recommend the blackened fish as it was a little bland. Even though the spices were bland, the entire meal was cooked very well. The server was great and he knew his stuff. The location and the feel of the restaurant made for a great time."

"We were celebrating a birthday. We sat in the room with the burning sand, looking out on the river. It was very romantic. The food was very good. We used the dining coupon from online, which meant that we selected from a particular menu. The selection was great. I had the clam chowder and herbed salmon, my girlfriend had the salad and prime rib. The only thing we didn't care for was the dessert selection. But overall it was a great experience."

"I have brought friends from out of town several times and they all have a great experience. Because of the snow storm (January 30th), it was much more low keyed but that was great, too. "Have been to the Chart house several times. This was a slow weeknight. Can't beat the scenery. The wait staff was uncharacteristically slow throughout the service, which was unfortunate as we had guests in from overseas and we touted this restaurant as one of the best. The fare was a mixed review. Three of the four main courses served to us were very good. My wife's lobster was outstanding; however, I had a bone in my stuffed flounder. Despite it's savory taste, the thing I remembered about it was the bone. This restaurant should get 4 or 5 stars every time. Based on the results of this visit, I just can't do it. I would still recommend it to others because I'm sure that this was just an off night."

"Love Chart House restaurants generally and have had great service at this one on weekends but, this mid week visit was not good at all service-wise.

No bread was brought even after mention to the server, water nor wine were refilled even after asking several times. Basically none of the little touches normally given to customers at a higher end chain restaurant were there.

I realize it may be because this was a mid-week visit and they may save their best servers for the weekend, but we were seated in the prime seating area and expected better.

I will go back only because previous experiences have been on par with other Chart Houses. Hopefully this is an isolated incident."

"As always the Charthouse did not disappoint me. The group of four was seated in a comfortable booth with a beautiful view of the Potomac and the National Harbor. The service was impreccable, our waiter was very knowledgable about the menu items and gave a detailed description of them making it very hard to choose an entree because they all sounded so good. The food arrive to the table hot and timely. The presentation was enticing and the taste was delicious. After the many times that I've been to the Charthouse, I'm still impressed. Keep up the good work!"

"Clam chowder was the best I have ever had. Probably because Chart House clam chowder has won 5 years in a row the east coast clam chowder cook off.....in Boston. The crem brulee sugar top coat was burn and the salmon in a mustard sauce with herbs and nuts was just OK, I was expecting more from a seafood resturant. The mashed potatoes were below average."

"I love the lively upbeat atmosphere of the Chart House Restaurant. After arriving 45 minutes earlier than my scheduled reservation, my guest and I sat at the bar for a drink and decided to ordered our appetizers consisting of the most delicious crab stuffed mushrooms I’ve ever tasted, after viewing another customer’s order we then decided an order of fried calamari was in order which was quite scrumptious. We were then escorted to our table in the "Fire room" where the atmosphere was like a romantic dinner on a beach; the fire in the center of the room had me mesmerized and the window view was spectacular. The service was friendly and timely. A beautiful evening!."

"The Chart House never disappoints. We went with the intent of browsing the Restaurant Week menu, but I should've known better. I couldn't resist the wide variety of options, and so we treated ourselves to the regular menu. "Whenever we an occassion to dine with friends who enjoy great seafood, we go to the Chart House. We have always had a wonderful time with good service, great food and an atmoshpere that is warm and inviting. The noise level is low and conversations can be held easily. "I really wanted to like this place. I took my wife here for her Birthday with expectations of a really nice dinner. We started with the calamari and 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell. The calamari were ok, a little chewy and quite bland. The oysters were good but what kind of a seafood restaurant only stocks one kind of oyster? Next the main courses...She ordered the salmon which was quite good, probably the highlight of the evening. I ordered the mixed grill. It consisted of 3 shrimp, a crab cake, and a very small piece of salmon. Thankfully it came with a metric ton of buttery rice. I had the misfortune of ordering a side of king crab for 19.99. It was literally 3 small sections of crab legs that were dry and cold. not recommended."

"I made a resevations on Wed 1/13 for dinner on 1/16 at 8:15p, I arrived 20 min before, I went to the bar and they called me at 8pm sharp...the table that was reserved was by a window overseing the water..it was amazing...the service was amazing..Im was speechless and my date was inpressed...I cant even begin to thank you guys for making my eveing amazing...I will def come again and will recommend to everyone!! from a scale 1-10 I rate you guys a 100+++!!!! "Attendants were knowledgeable and very helpful, and very attentive (example, we individually went to the well stocked salad buffet, and our napkins were refolded. I smiled when I saw my wife's folded, and mine was given a different fold when I left.) Great ambiance. Prime rib was a bit salty, and tougher than expected, but still very good. The restaurant will stay on our short list for when we get a babysitter. The restaurant could handle children, but the restaurant is not meant for kids under ten."

"I love the romantic feel of this place - quiet, cozy, and private. Excellent for Birthday Celebrations! I definitely would return to try the Maine Lobster. Our server was excellent. The food server took his time to crack the Maine Lobster for my spouse. The items on the tonight's special were excellect choices. The Sweet and Spicy Sicillian Sea Bass topped with the Oscar topping was amazing. The Hot Chocolate Lava Cake was excellent. It's a must have."

"Seated at a window seat overlooking the Potomac. It was a great view. The planes flying overhead landing at National Airport, the small Alexandria harbor to one side and the Capitol dome off in the distance. Great food. The only knock is that there was a group of 8 seated next to ours. They were kinda loud. If it was not for that it would have been much more pleasant.

If I had one suggestion for the restaurant, it would be that the upstairs area which is fairly small and quaint be used as a refuse for those that are looking for a more romantic get-away. The views and the small dining area make for a perfect setting for this. Sit the larger parties down below."

"As usual, dining at the Chart House is a treat. The food is great and the service admirable. It's a beautiful setting and in summer a great place to dine outdoors and enjoy the river view. "We had a very nice experience at Charthouse! We even found parking right outside the front door.
Greeted at the door and lead to our window table by our own sever, Tes. Tes was great; helpful, cheerful, personable and attendant to our needs but didn't 'hover'.
A little pricey, but suspected that walking in the door. Websites' menu does NOT include prices, which I didn't like. I'd recommend website include a better list of parking.

Was very surprised that there weren't that many people in the restaurant while we were there, since the OpenTables reservation system didn't give me many Time slot choices. OpenTables gave me impression they were full. Maybe the cold weather caused others to cancel their reservations?

"My fiancé and i decided to go to the Chart House the say after we got engaged to celebrate. I absolutly love their ahi tuna with spinich and bok choy and the molten lava cake and that night their food was just as wonderful as I always remembered it. The only thing about this place is I feel like when I'm paying as much as we do to eat there I feel that some sort of dress code should be followed. The night we went people were wearing sweatshirts, workout pants and ripped jeans. It made it feel cheap and not very special. Also I don't feel the service is as good as it used to be. The hostess barely looked up to greet us and we felt a little neglected by our waiter. More attention to detail and it would be wonderful."

"very helpful wait staff...we were there for lunch on new years eve...two things that were less than wonderful were: 1)Left my umbrella there by accident...it was gone when I went back for it 6 hours later 2)The menu had no vegetarian entree available...we asked the waitress and she told us it would be possible to order a pasta dish without the chicken, then the chef told her that would not be possible so the only thing left to order was the salad bar"

"The food was good, but seemed terribly overpriced. I had made the reservation 3 weeks in advance, but still had to deal with a rude hostess and a 20 minute wait for our table. Our waiter started off attentive, but towards the end of the meal he almost ignored our table completely. It appeared he forgot about our dessert and it took 15 minutes to get the first order which arrived as a puddle of melted ice cream. Due to the poor shape of her dessert, my fiance was forced to eat what remained of the ice cream before it had completely melted while I waited another 10 minutes for my slice of pie. We chose the Chart House for our romantic engagement dinner, but were both pretty disappointed with the noisy restaurant and inferior service."

"Our dining experience was good, the restaurant was a little noisy. We had a good waiter who was attentive enough yet still left us alone to enjoy our time together. I really wouldn't recommend this restaurant for small children. Our only hiccup was we got sat underneath a place where the waiters cleaned up and we got splashed with ice cold water during the meal... that was a little irritating."

"We were seated at our table about 8:30p.m...because of the holiday we were rushed thru our courses..first two entree I ordered they were out of..then I guess an assistant manager came over to let us know they were out of a lot of items..especially fish..so I ordered prime rib..guess what..they were out of that as well..I have been to many nice restaurants as well as The Chart House in many locations and never had this problem..we were not even offered a cup of coffee as an apology for the many inconveniences..not a good experience"

"Chart House is a special place for us since we had our first date there 2 years ago. We could not think of a better place to become engaged which happened Christmas Eve. Everything was perfect right up to the window seat in the quiet corner with the great views, food excellent as usual, wine list fantastic and our waitress was the greatest. The setting that the restaurant provided was the perfect place to propose and enjoy a memorable Christmas Eve dinner together that we will remember the rest of our lives. Thanks to the Chart House for making our evening special and providing such excellent service, a fantastic setting and a dinner that was so well prepared by their chef.

"Our waiter promised us rolls, though, and didn't stop by our table again for 15 minutes. When we reminded him, he brought us ones that were still completely frozen in the middle! W complained, and he brought us more frozen ones. Other than that, the food and service were good, and we had an enjoyable time."
