Restaurant Reviews for Esca

Esca reservations Esca

402 West 43rd Street
New York, NY 10036

Esca is a Southern Italian Seafood Restaurant created by Mario Batali, Joseph Bastianich & David Pasternack. Esca showcases the style & sensibility of Italian coastal cooking. Dave went to Italy & saw firsthand what they were talking about. After years of cooking French food, Dave had finally found the food he had always wanted to cook. The best fish available, prepared in a simple & delicious way. In Italy that means the local catch, but in New York that means the best fish of the Pacific, Mediterranean & our own backyard.

At Esca you can eat the most sought after Pacific Ocean delicacies along side Fluke that Dave caught on his day off. The menu changes daily & is driven by the fish markets of the world & the farms of Dave’s friends. Esca is the place where you can have stunning raw fish, an incredible bowl of pasta & then a Mediterranean Branzino cooked in sea salt. Esca is the best of Italian coastal cooking with access to the world’s greatest fish.

"Delicious food! When we first arrived, the noise level was fine. Within the hour, the place was packed and very noisy~~to the point that we could not speak without yelling. Did put a damper on the experience. For that kind of $, I want to be able to enjoy and have a conversation."

"CAn you imagine a best-friend reunion after (for real) 40 years! The rendez-vous was Penn Station, converging from DC and Boston, and then to Esca - a fitting setting for this really special occasion. That is, just the insouciant best, and effortlessly romantic."

Review 5 for Esca

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"It was pretty noisy and the service was just OK. We were very excited to dine there, but unfortunately the food was rather disappointing. I ordered pasta with shrimp and there were literally two small shrimp...it was also lacking in flavor. For the money, I didn't feel it was worth it. We will not be going back."

"Great selection and outstanding preparation. Puts other seafood restaurants to shame. If you can sit by the fish preparation table you will learn more about filleting than in any cooking class! THe only drawback is the noise level, but that should not keep you away."

Review 9 for Esca

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Had high expectations for Esca based on terrific experiences at other Batali/Bastianich restaurants, but this was a mixed bag. Food was uneven. At its best, it was thrilling and satisfying (the pesci azzurri in particular). The pasta (nettle gnocchi with mint) was solid but bland: underseasoned and not enhanced by the seafood in the dish. Secondi (monkfish and spotted bass) were both fine -- tasty enough, nicely cooked -- but undistinctive. Also had the misfortune of being seated next to a guy (apparently a regular) who spent 2 hrs. boasting about himself at top volume to his unfortunate date, who barely got to finish a sentence. This isn't the restaurant's fault, but it says something about the crowd. Next time I stay below 14th :-)"

Review 12 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"What a meal. Load up on the crudo. You won't find anything quite like it elsewhere. I also had the chance to try 3 pasta dishes (we made friends with our neighbors). I almost overlooked the gnocchi and I'm so glad I sampled it. WOW. Don't miss it. Go for as many courses as you can, bring friends and share. It's that kind of place.

As for the front of the house, it was a battle royal between the sommeiller and the waiter for best service. We couldn't have had a better night.

This restaurant, celebrating it's 10 year anniversary, has managed to maintain it's excitement while offering the well-polished refinement that only comes with experience.

Review 15 for Esca

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Very good food. The spicy squid ink pasta and the Casale Del Giglio Petit Verdot wine were the highlights of the meal. All the food was executed very well, but it was only the pasta dish that was truly memorable and worth going back for. The cod w/ mushrooms was very good, but not crave-worthy, and the other dish of crispy flounder w/ spinach and chickpeas was way too buttery tasting. The vegetables were actually much better than the fish, which is a nice change, but would have liked the fish to be more memorable. Would go back to try more pasta dishes. The crudo was also good, but not worth the $17-18 price for only 3-4 tiny bites of raw fish. The sommelier was great and had a perfect recommendation for us!"

"Overall the experience was good; very nice service. However, we will not return. There is not enough variety on the menu for my husband. The only seafood he eats is shellfish. Even though he normally enjoys bouillabase; this one was too fishy, he especially did not enjoy the skin on the fish."

Review 20 for Esca

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The food was overpriced and generally poor to average. Heard great things about the crudo (sushi). For $18 -- 4small compact (not juicy) pieces of hamachi with tapenade. Good, not great. Clams in a wine broth as a hot app -- basically baked clams in a very salty broth. Clams not great, preparation like your average Italian restauraunt. Halibut came to the table poached to a hard flaky finish that was inedible with a pairing of salty leeks and mushrooms that overpowered the overcooked fish. THey graciously took it back and provided a medium cooked piece on a bed of spinach and pureed parsnips. Much better -- by no means award winning. Desserts excellent- caramel gelato with espresso, sorbet as well. My client was very disappointed."

Review 23 for Esca

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"We were so disappointed the food was terrible. The first course with raw fish that salted was good but way too small for the high price. I had the Mahi it was burned and tasteless. My husband had gnochi it was gummy and no flavor. I tried dessert of torte which was soggy and chocolate outside was not good. I can not believe this meal cost us around $200.00, for such poor food. The service was amazingly good, they were so attentive and professional. The restuarant was packed, I do not know what they were eating because our food was barely eatable."

We really enjoyed the atmosphere; the restaurant was elegant but also has a nice seating arrangement were we sat next to two other couples who were very pleasant. Review 31 for Esca

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Wife loves seafood; went for her birthday. She enjoyed her entree, the mixed fried seafood, describing it as delicately fried, crispy on the outside, still moist on the inside. I had the gnocchi, decent. Thought the restaurant was a bit overpriced. Used to work in Manhattan, used to high Manhattan prices. Didn't mind paying $30. for my wife's entree; she enjoyed it. My gnocchi at $24.00 was overpriced, but didn't really mind. What did annoy me was the overpriced salad at $17.00; described as having "apples" and pumpkin or squash. Were 2 tiny dollops of squash; one tiny piece of apple. Most jarring to me was mainstream American rock music; this totally out of character for such a place. Not expecting Bach, but jazz, bossa nova, samba etc."

"it's super,- really,- but somehow kind of tiring-- when you get the 2 main guys looking after you, the it's like being in Rome and so it's fun and delicious,-- but some of the younger staff need to ask advice about where your bread was kneaded,--before they bring it to you,.. and then are are tourists taking pictures of each other...it's Felidia or Caravaggio on 'speed'-- but we do go back whenever we're at the theatres on theatre row, and it's very useful for that..."

Review 36 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This place is a gem. Convenient if you're catching a show.

My food was so good it was just like being back in Rome at a great fish restaurant. It's much better looking in the summer with the patio open, but even in the dead of winter it's a great place for seafood. More than a decent wine list and great service. I met the chef at the bar on the way out and he was wonderful, and much too modest.

Review 44 for Esca

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The food was tasty and fresh but the service was very pretetntious. We had a waiter who paid us no heed as the next table ordered wine and had his attendtion. The gentleman at the next table had ordered a pasta dish with clams and received a lemon scented towel to clean his hands. My wife had the same dish and was never offered anything. There were plenty of waiters but no management. In addition at the end we were rushed as the staff was being served their lunch. For the price it was NOT worth it. Our waiter was like a phanton and was very rude especially after we made it clear despite repeated proding we did not wants drinks or an extra entree. I fely more warmth in the Middle East"

Review 49 for Esca

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Went to Esca for Restaurant Week and was very pleased. Some restaurants on Restaurant Week seriously under deliver and it's a disappointment. I always figure that a smart restaurant will strut their stuff and entice one to return and Esca certainly obliged. The food was very tasty and there was a nice selection. In addition there was a 10.73 wine tasting...It was a treat, particularly the dessert wine...."

"I was looking forward to eating at Esca but was very disappointed. The service and ambiance were great. The wait staff and the sommelier were friendly, helpful and not snooty. "Heavy hand with the salt. From a person who thinks pizza is better with extra salt.

Funny, because when I told a coworker where I'd gone, the first thing out of his mouth was, they're salty. The dessert and oysters were the high points.

Breaded flounder was on the bland side. Veggies were overcooked. Rigatoni with tuna was good but there was no Wow.

From sit down to ordering took 30 minutes. Sorry, I have a job to go back to, it's lunchtime! Overall okay experience, but I probably won't go back.

Review 72 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The Restaruant Week menu was quite extensive offering 3 or 4 choices in each category. A nice feature was the offer of 3 tasting portions of wine with each course and all were excellent. We ordered the scallops, which was delicious. Would definitely go to ESCA again."

Review 73 for Esca

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Overall, we had a lovely evening. The food was fresh and delicious, the service attentive, and the table was in a great location. I would have to agree, however, that the portions were very small in light of the high prices. (This comes from someone who enjoys good food prepared simply with the best ingredients and who does not prefer huge portions.) It's also difficult to carry on a conversation due to the noise level."

Review 77 for Esca

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I love fish and couldn't wait to try Esca. Was looking forward to the dining experience and found that the quality of the food fell short. Most of the dishes were overseasoned. The vegetables were overcooked. I did not expect a "Le Bernardin" experience, but given the 25 rating in Zagats and the few reviews I read, I was expecting better."

Review 78 for Esca

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Service somewhat spotty until we called someone over. Waiter very kind and knowledgeable but seemed to have too many tables. Though fish dishes very good and well prepared, seemed very expensive for what we got. We had nothing with the dishes and some main courses could have been bigger, i.e. the whole butterfish. Something should have been included along with main courses for price. Salad also high priced for what it was-few components, a lot of greens. We were disappointed, though we had been to Esca several times prior to this time."

"The quality of the food was superb and the atmosphere very comfortable. The baby octopus salad was unique and delicious. The gnocchi was voted best in New York by The New York Times.
This will be a regular stop for us every trip to NY. I highly recommend reservations. We ate at Esca on a Wednesday night at 7pm and a party of three walked in ahead of us without a reservation and were told it was a two plus hour wait.

Review 92 for Esca

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Delighted to try one of the Mario Batali restaurants conveniently located in midtown. The noise level was a bit deafening especially as the waiter tried to talk us through the menu. The spaghetti nero was as good as any we had in Venice. My monkfish was on the verge of being overcooked but still delicious. The staff was great about choosing wine pairings and even humored me when I changed my mind about one of the choices I was given."

Review 96 for Esca

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Four women dining. The food was not fit to eat. One women said that he entree tasted burnt. The waiter said that was the way it was supposed to taste, but he would check with the chef. He then returned with the answer that the chef said it was nit burnt. He did not take the fish back. She never ate it, and was charged for her dinner.
The other 3 women ordered pastas and took one bite and did not eat any more.
The food was digusting.
This was my 3rd time at this restaurant, but I will not return not so much because the food was awful, but because the waiter did nothing to find out why each of us had not eaten our dinners. Obviously, the chef was not concerned to see 4 full plates come back into the kitchen

"The food was wonderful. Nice ambiance. Our waiter was fabulous, very professional and knowledgeable about the menu and willing to offer advice. He even recommended a spot for dessert after the show. Review 102 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"When we arrived through front door of Esca on a cold Wed in Jan , we had a warm welcome and the interior of the restaurant had warm glow and warm feel to it. We were seated at a cozy table for 2 along a leather banquette that looked out onto the intimate dining room with a rustic wood floor, white linen covered tables with sleek leather chairs . Waiter offered special cocktails or wine, then came back with tasty amuse of a smoked makerel, followed by really good olives to nibble. Menus were then brought andwe were asked if we had dined here before. It was explained that the Crudo was what they were known for . King salmon with pink peppercorns was excellent. Both Fish entree terrific! Impressed that loose tea still served!! Off to show"

Review 104 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Overall the experience was great. The restaurant was smaller than I expected, but we sat in the second dining room and due to the cold weather, that was preferred. The front dining room gets the draft from the front door. It is touted as a fish lover's dream, but that's really an understatement, fish was superb. If you are a twosome, get the branzino in salt -- fabulous. If you are going for a pasta course as well as app and entree, skip the sides, way too much food. Did not have dessert, but looked good. Service was impeccable."

Review 106 for Esca

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Restaurant was very good. The wine list had options on both the lower and upper end of the price spectrum. The restaurant's emphasis is on fish, so we ordered a seafood appetizer and shared the Bronzini fish for 2, both of which were delicious. Cost was a little high at this restaurant, and the open table $ signs are not accurate in my opinion. This was at least a $$$ kind of restaurant and not $$. Service was excellent and I would recommend this to friends."

Review 112 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Three of us had a fabulous dinner at Esca capping off a 5 day visit to NYC. Started off with 3 types of crudo (tile fish, scorpion fish and yellowfin tuna carpaccio). Fantastic! Proboably would not order scorpion fish again but glad to have tried it. Texture a little chewy and not as delicate as the other two. Went on to have a grilled octapus salad and mussles, clams and scallops in a spicy pumpkin broth. Both were superb. Intermezzo was a shared serving of squid ink pasta done perfectly. Finally, we had the whole sea bass baked in salt - divine. Service was impeccable. Attentive without being intrusive. The sommelier steered us to a delicious bottle from the extensive list of Italian wines. I will definitely go back again."

Review 119 for Esca

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I have wanted to try one of Mario Batali's restaurants for a while. We finally had the chance to dine at Esca, and I have to say that I was somewhat underwhelmed. There were a lot of items that we wanted to try on the menu. I thought that the tasting menu would be a good way to go. The first hiccup occured when we realized that there were one or 2 items on the tasting that didn't sound that appealing to us. We asked if we could swap one or two items, and the chef in charge that night and she said the only thing she would do was alter 1 dish on 1 of our menus. Other fine restaurants I have had tasting menus at have been much more accomodating. Basically the courses and wine pairings were unimaginative and rudimentary. I expected better."

Review 121 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Quite simply, Esca is a regular stop on my NY food visits. Classy, simple, elegant, always delicious. I love Esca.

We lucked out and sat next to the wooden table where they filet the salt encrusted fish, and plate some of the other items. So it was continuous show of awesome looking food, detail-oriented work by the team, and a lovely conversation with their young service manager, who could not have been nicer. Her dessert recommendation (caramel ice cream with toffee crunch and espresso poured over it?) was ridiculously wonderful. Thanks again!

Review 122 for Esca

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Fish (branzino) was gorgeous, cooked as in Italy! I would not expect that! Very good olive oil. Shame for the tomato souce of the kid's pasta...just out of a can, stirred with butter and milk...the Batali's one on Zabar's shelf taste much better...I'd rather use that! Pasta was not cooked right...sticky...but the child appreciated and that counts!
Very nice and well presented desert. Very good and kind service, though a bit too much formal. Not the best place for children though she was treated as a little queen.
Overall rate Very good!

"There was a loud electronic buzz coming from a light fixture near our table that was fairly annoying, adding to the aggressive background music it made for a fairly noisy ambiance. Review 131 for Esca

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We were a party of three. We ordered 3 pastas and 3 entrees. All three pastas were very
salty, one of which was inedible(tho we were warned it was "somewhat salinic" due to the
clams). We probably should have returned them back to the kitchen but we didn't have much
confidence in their ability to detect the salt content of their dishes. Doesn't anyone
taste what is being served before it's presented to the diner? The entrees were good tho 2 were slightly salty. I felt uncomfortable making a scene(returning all three pastas) but in retrospect I probably should have. At these prices there is absolutely no excuse to
serve obviously oversalted food. Basic food service 101 in my opinion. We won't return.

At 435 they still have not acknowledged me and have yet to open the doors. Their meeting was still taking place as emplyees were laughing and talking while ppl were waiting in the rain. I called and they said they were still having their meeting. At 4:39 I was still not let in and I left ! VERY UNPROFESSIONAL ! !"

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I absolutely LOVE this place. We went in the middle of December; it was cold, wet and for the most part quite dreary. ALthough frazzled and disoriented, the minute we stepped foot into Esca everyone was helpful and warm. They quickly took our sopping coats, and gave us a table in the beautifully decorated dining room. we had the friendliest waiter who was helpful in getting us out with enough time to make it to our show. The tuna here is amazing and there are not words to describe the mussles! The wine that we were recommended was delicious and suitable for the meal. I orderd the pasta with clams- it was light but very flavorful. My boyfriend had the scallops and he wont stop talking about them. This place is EXCELENT and DELICIOUS!"

"Came for a pre theater dinner and had exceptional seafood, perfectly prepared, with service that allowed us a perfectly timed meal that was unrushed but got us to Hamlet on time. Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We were a bit disappointed. Esca has been my husband's choice for years, but we had to wait 30 minutes for our table and there is no where to wait since they have all but eliminated their bar. We had guests and that was not fun. The service was not as good as we remembered and the food was not really very special. The best thing we had was dessert, the affocato. The rest was pretty ordinary. That white bean brushetta is tired. They have served it since they opened. It is time to change. We will probably not go back."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We were seated timely and greeted nicely, then our waiter disappeared. We had to ask the manager for menus and then had to wait too long to order. Once that happened, we got doted on nicely, but should not have been in that spot.

The restaurant is a nice size with comfortable decor, however even at "NY rates" we thought the food was pricey for the quantity and minimal sides. What we had was good, but given the number of food options in NY, we are unlikely to return.

"The crudo bay scallops in meyer lemon and olive oil were ambrosial! The wait staff was informative, helpful and friendly. All in all, it was one of the best meals we had while in NYC and in a city known for its restaurants, that's saying something!"

Review 148 for Esca

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"This is the 4th time we have eaten at Esca in the past 18 months. Up until this visit it was one of our favorite restaurants. This evening was a disappointment. While the appetizers were fine (grilled calamari and tuna), our main courses were overdone. We ordered the dorado and scallops. The dorado was tough and chewy. The bay scallops were cooked too long. At the prices they charge, this is unacceptable. We were frequent customers, but will not return soon. A table by the door was not appreciated."

"Great choice for a special occasion. The entrees were very good but were outshone by the incredible pasta(Bucatini) and appetizer choices(Calamari). Triple Chocolate Tort for dessert was memorable. Waiter and staff were very attentive and helpful. Don't look at the bill though..."

Review 155 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Being from an Italian seaside community, I discriminate greatly when it comes to fresh seafood. We order tuna for appitizers and I had the lobster and spagetti and my wife had the haddock filet (crispy) with the mushrooms and truffels. Outstanding can only discribe the flavor. My uncle the head fishmonger in Molfetta would be impressed. I will diffently be there again soon."

Review 156 for Esca

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We enjoyed our evening at ESCA, however, the restaurant was very noisy (background noise) and the music did not match the atmosphere. The service was exceptional and made the evening. The gnocchi was the best we have ever tasted. The main courses (fish) were overcooked but tasty. The chocolate dessert was out of this world (and the only thing worth the menu price). Over all I thought the pricing about 25% higher than the quality of the meal justified. Our waiter was fabulous. Dined on Friday evening."

Review 158 for Esca

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Excellent food; fine service; obviously still an 'in' place to be. We particularly like to go after the theater because the restaurant is always full and lively. My one reservation is that, as is the case with so many restaurants these days, it is far too noisy. However, the restaurant lives up to Mario Batali's high standards and we will certainly return."

Review 159 for Esca

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"What a pleasant surprise!! Esca was recommended to us by a friend who knew we were going to NYC for the Thanksgiving Weekend. (I guess it should not have been a surprise as our friend as never let us down;-) The food, wine, service and decor was all top notch! Seemed to be a hot spot for pre-theater lunch. We arrived as those patrons were leaving so we had most of the place to ourselves. We will certainly add this one to our NYC standards! Highly recommend!"

Review 160 for Esca

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I have eaten at Esca before and this was my first disappointment. The monk fish main course was so over cooked that it was dry and inedible. The brussel sprouts on the other course were black as charcoal. I understand carmelized but this was so burned that my dining companion could smell the burned from across the table! When we complained, the waiter said he checked with his manager and that is how they cook things. I find this hard to believe as a well-traveled diner and a cook myself that this would be acceptable in any restaurant. Then we were basically ignored because we had dared to complain. Why ask, "How is everything?" I would NOT recommend Esca to anyone with so many other choices in NYC. Expensive for the poor quality."
