Mio Restaurant
Affectionately called the Embassy of Latin America in Washington, D.C., Mío has captured the hearts and palates of D.C.’s most influential Latin Americans and Washingtonians with a convivial table and “Cocina Abierta” (open kitchen) culture. Under the management and ownership of long time D.C. restaurateur, Manuel Iguina, and under Chef Giovanna Huyke's seasoned expertise, Mío presents daily a unique menu from Latin America’s most influential cuisine capitals - a menu sophisticated in flavor yet true to its origins. In our kitchen all are welcome, the summers on the beach in the Caribbean, a Sunday parillada, the corner taquería, cevichería, lechonera and the arepera, all in one place. Just south of Thomas Circle, Mío also features modern American selections in a convivial atmosphere where customers are treated with Latin hospitality. "I took my wife for mother’s day. In addition to the appetizers, she ordered a steak with “arroz mamposteao”. Her food was great. The steak was juicy and the rice was great. The service was very good too. Among other things, she asked for a steak sauce. Thank God they didn’t have and brought two great sauces to dip the steaks and the fried yuca sticks. I ordered “Dorado” fish with a “yuca mofongo”. My food was dried, overcooked and flavorless. I'm trying to be kind. To makes things worst, I left half of the food but been a pricey restaurant, I will not throw things away. So we asked them to bag our food. They gave us a doggie bag with her food only. I didn’t enjoy whatever I ate, paid it in full and didn’t take home the other half"

"Attractive room with friendly,competent floor staff. Need to keep on top of their menus...the beer l ordered wasn't available and the special ordered [though it was a pre theater dinner] had sold out. This can happen, but we should be told prior to ordering.

"I liked just about everything here - the food was good, nice atmosphere, good outdoor dining. If anything, the service was a little too fast - like they were trying to get us in and out. I was a little disappointed with the dulce de leche mousse - it had no taste. But I will definitely come back again."

"The food was outstanding as before. We made reservations for 7:30PM during a weeknight. Don't do it if you want to talk.
We shouted with our guests until about 9PM and then it became a restaurant.
The food is consistently good and our server is outstanding. We just need a way to put some glass panels around the eating area to lower the decibels from the bar area."

"We were very impressed with the excellent food -- Mahi Mahi with yucca mofongo, and a veal entree... Tostones app was great too. This is unique cuisine that takes the best of PR and dresses it up alot -- probably fancier and better than most food on the isla, and a bit more expensive, but WELL WORTH IT !"

"I have no idea why I read so many good reviews of this Barely Passable Restaurant. My fish overcooked after I asked for it semi rare, and each entree appeared as if the kitchen had used the same "sauce" for each of us. All dishes were the same color of onion, tomato mixture. My friend got a stew and was given a fork to eat it with. Absolutely No Plate Presentation. They just plopped it on the table as if we were in a diner and as stated they all looked the same. Not even a sprig of Chive to give it some kind of presentation. Bread was good enough with a decent herbed butter. Looks like it's turned into a late night spot for singles to me as bar was hopping and lots of dancing. Just one more mediocre meal in the District."

He complained that the tostones had been re-heated.
I had Mahi Mahi and a salad. Both were great. Salad was a perfect balance of acid, fruit flavor and greens. The fish was exceptionally good.
The mojito was the best in this town. Having a Cubano behind the bar was the reason for this rush of flavor. The tres leches made me jealous that I can never make it like this.
Moist, flavorful cake without a drip.
I would like to try the outside al fresco when the weather warms a bit more.
They have a great Malbec and not served too warm as is the case with a lot of DC restaurants. They know not to store it in the kitchen."

"I went to Mio's with high expectations based on other reviews. Being a Puerto Rican native I was excited to try the food. However I was very disappointed. Presentation was basic and food lacked flavor. Best part of the meal were the tostones and red beans. I do not recommend if you are looking for authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. Perhaps we just chose a bad dish. Server was attentive, but not necessarily the most friendly. Ordered another drink once i closed out, and he seemed a bit annoyed. On to ambiance... , it had no resemblance or feel of real Puerto Rican culture. The upside- place is very clean and very modern. Seems like it could be a nice place for happy hour. Overall very disappointing,"

"The grilled calamari was the best we have ever had. I had the fried red snapper and it was great as well. My wife had the pork stew and was not so pleased with it, nothing wrong with the dish, but not what she expected. "My recent dinner at Mio was one of the best meals I have had in Washington for a long time. The menu was so interesting and inventive. Food and drinks were both outstanding and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was lovely. And our server was outstanding--she gave us wonderful recommendations and was warm, attentive, and lovely in every way. It was the perfect place to celebrate my friend's birthday. I can't wait to return."

"The food was unexpectedly very good. My guest and I were not only impressed with the food but also with the ambience of the space. Our only complaint was being presented with 3 different checks with different amounts when we inquired about a charge on the bill. "Mio was a great surprise. We have been to Lincoln next door several times and enjoy the food and decor, but always find it just a touch pretentious. Mio looks like it would be like that too, but is just spot on elegant and enjoyable. The food options were plentiful and the skirt steak salad was one of the best meals I've had in months."

"Had dinner here with family visiting from out of town. Everyone enjoyed their meal and servixe was excellent. Lovely decor, large place but didn't get noisy. Only critcism: nearly all the dishes were beef, pork or shellfish. There was a vegetarian entrée and app. If you have dietary restrictions, you might want to check the menu first. Great cocktails."

"Good food but lacks a level of sophistication for the kind if rating it has. I would describe it as as notch above good home cooked Latin food. "Me and my brother made reservations to this restaurant to try it out and we were pleasantly surprised at the great food and service. We arrived earlier than our reservation time but while waiting they assured we were attended to immediatly with drinks while we waited. I have already recommended this place to quite a few of my friends as a place to go on a Friday night."

"Ceviche was too salty. Filete de Cerdo con Manchego Frito y Salsa de Guayaba was one note and far too sweet. Fried whole red snapper was delicious and perfectly cooked but the sides were one note and again very sweet. Mahi mahi, the Fish of the day, was cooked perfectly. Desserts were yummy and surprisingly less sweet than the main courses."

"agree with other reviewer that there was not a kid menu, but they did have a bar menu with small bites appropriate for a young person. We loved the decor, the atmosphere, the energy of the kitchen behind us, the good service, and excellent food. Everyone at our table of seven raved about their meal - their speciality is the mofongo, traditional puerto rican dish. the guava cheesecake was a great way to end the meal. We will definitely come back."

"After being written up as one of the area's top 100 restaurants Mio did not deliver the fine dining experience we've come to expect from restaurants on the list. Nothing we had provided anything like a culinary epiphany; nothing really stood out as being crafted or refined, elevated cooking. Many of the dishes presented the same slaw concoction (sauteed onions, peppers in a tomatoey kind of sauce) that seemed like it had been cooked in a very large batch in the morning and served throughout the day.
Virtually everything lacked sufficient seasoning...how you make what amounts to a savory plaintain donut filled with cheese taste bland, I don't know, but they managed.
Service was equally underwhelming."

"I was expecting the food to be incredible because Mio made the list of top 100 restaurants in the DC area. As a group of four, we started with 3 apps: the calamari (which is supposedly one of their specialties), arepas, and the shrimp w/ mofongo. The arepas were cold and tasted as if they came from a freezer and a national chain food supplier. The calamari didn't nearly live up to any hype whatsoever. Entrees ordered were the duck, whole red snapper (another supposed specialty), & the pork tenderloin. I wasn't impressed with ANY of the food. The service, however, was excellent, and the cocktails were good, as were the desserts. For my money, there are much better tapas restaurants than Mio, and I'm surprised it made the Top 100 list."

"My out of town guests, who were new to Mio, raved about the food, the grilled steak, and the lechon asado, and rice and beans. The drinks, mojitos made from scratch, won raves as well. The service was friendly, unrushed but efficient. The late-evening bar scene was fun, loud but courteous."

"We were looking forward to our dining experience and had looked at the menu a few times. We had a 9pm res we arrived on time. Three of us wanted the whole redsnapper at 9pm they had run out. That was a huge disappointment. We had to settle and that is never a good first impression. Wine was good. Left us wanting more."

"MIO DOES NOT offer a full range of authentic Puerto Rican, Dominican and/or Cuban cuisine.
MIO is NOT a family restaurant, as there is NO kid menu.
MIO is a dating restaurant with the atmosphere and ambiance of such a place (i.e. cozy, dim and quaint).
However if you truly want to impress a date by spending money and perhaps leave hungry - MIO is the place to be!"
