A Greenwich Village favorite, this collaboration between partners Mario Batali, Joseph Bastianich, and Mark Ladner specializes in high quality, moderately priced Roman fare with a New York edge. Lupa is a fun, boisterous and unpretentious trattoria with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
"Always Great! Delicious Ittalian food served in an a charming setting. I go as often as possible and Lupa never disappoints. Pastas are served hot, as they should be. And, they are cooked to perfection! Try the Babette Casio peppe.. It is never as good anywhere else!"

"Wine steward really worked to get us what we wanted in the price range I gave (less than $75) and nailed the white (the red was good but not outstanding). My food was not warm but they immediately replaced it. So 1.5 thumbs up."

"I'm from Chicago and wanted to experience Lupa before leaving NY. Made a reservation for Sunday lunch and had a great experience. I had the braciolle(spelling?) and it was great. Very freindly service."

"Very happy with this little gem from Mario Batali. Great menu, well priced, perfect ambience. Even better that we can reserve by open table rather than have to call in. Ordered the large meat platter to start... Can't go wrong with that. The 3 pasta dishes were superb: had the olive oil and black pepper, spicy tomato sauce and the tagliatelle with snap peas and pecorino cheese. Main was ok, pork belly was tender and rich, but I love my pastas. Dessert was outstanding. Chocolate gelato and orange sorbetto were perfect together. We added a cheese platter and biscotti. Recommended!"

"While we may have disappointed the sommelier, we opted for the chef's choice and wine pairing. The food was adventurous, flavorful, plentiful, and expertly served. I would highly recommend. I will return. Excellent balance of variety and value. Thank you people of Lupa!"

"This past weekend my boyfriend and I dined Lupa for his 33 birthday. The food, ambience and service were excellent. My only complaint was that our reservation was at 10:00 pm. I made the reservation 30 days to the day at exactly 10:00 am(when they being taking reservations).. I find it highly unlikely that they couldn't fit 2 people in for a 9:00 reservation. Although I called multiple times to try and switch the time, the answer was always no.
I will defienelty come back to Lupa, but only if I can get an earlier reservation. During a two hour tasting menu, the last thing I want to do is yawn!"

"My husband and I dined at Lupa for my birthday. We had the tasting menu, which was a great value for both the quality and quantity of food. Every course was just delicious. We loved the pasta dishes and the pheasant and the pork were the best. The dessert was wonderful as well. And I must say, the service was impeccable. The staff did not miss a beat, and it was crazy busy in the restaurant. Speaks well of it's popularity because it was Monday night! If you are looking for a great Roman dining experience - go. You will not be disappointed. Next time we are in NYC, we will definitely return."

"We love LUPA and decided to take my sister for her 50th Birthday which happens to be on Mother's Day. We arrived a few minutes before my husband was parking the car and were told to wait (at the door) until he arrived. The usual fare which is delicious was not up to par. The vegetables were lukewarm and uninteresting. The noise level was deafening and i asked for the music to be turned and it was not. I couldn't hear my sister across the table. I've arrived at the conclusion that mother's day is never a day to dine out, even at LUPA which we love."

"Took my wife along with my son and his girlfriend (both @ NYU) for Mother's Day Lunch. Wonderful welcome upon arrival, seated a couple of minutes early of reservation time. The food was outstanding; the Saltimbocca, although prepared differently than I have had anywhere else (not a bad thing!), was extremely tasty. Salad were fresh, light and delicious."

"Literally one of the best meals I've ever eaten this past time. We've been there before. It is without fail, one of the tastiest meals you can get in NYC. My friend said you have to get the Tartufo and we did. after one bite and we had to put our spoons down and savor the moment. it was amazing. can i say Yum-azing?!!"

"we had a wonderful, casual, low-key dinner with perfectly executed salads (spinach, escarole and sliced snap peas with fresh sauteed artichoke hearts spooned on top--mmmm) and pastas made with fresh seasonal ingredients. Great service and a great sommelier who helped us navigate an interesting wine list."

"I've been to Lupa many times over the years. The dishes are always really well-done, mostly simply, with top-notch ingredients. The star is always the pasta. Even in Italy, I've never had pasta as perfectly prepared as at Lupa. From the simple salt & pepper spaghetti to the more elaborate braised meat dishes, they're always a hit. I was disappointed this time when they didn't have a pasta with braised meats in a red sauce, I'll always choose that if it''s available. I also wish they'd bring back the parsnip flan. Nonetheless, I'll keep going back whenever I get to NY."

"I have been a guest at Lupa for many years. Eating at Lupa used to be a safe bet, great food and service. I have to admit that I was most disappointed on my recent visit. The poor salad leaves was drenched in a mayonnaise like sauce, the spaghetti were served with a watered salt broth called "al olio", the sword fish was soggy, the greens on the side completely over salted. What happened here?! With this experience I cannot recommend Lupa any longer."

"We went at 4 PM because we had 7 PM Broadway show tickets, so it was nice and quiet. One of the best Italian meals ever! We had the escarole salad, Bavette (essentially cacio e pepe), Gnocchi, and Saltimboca. They were all outstanding. Couldn't resist the gelato for dessert, which was excellent. For wine we had the Montepulciano Solonio, which was delightful. We will definitely be back on our next trip to NYC."

"We had a wonderful experience. Thaw food was amazing, and the wine help was spot on and much needed. My only complaint was that our 3-top was almost on top of the radiator (when it was 66 degrees outside). My companion was a bit roasted despite asking that they turn down the heat. Avoid the back corner and you'll be very happy here ."

"They only criticism we had of this extraordinary eatery was the lack of waiting space, and the tendency of the staff to equate the front Bar Area dining with the experience of the back room. There are a number of places where my wife and I prefer or don't mind sitting in the Bar area, this is not one of them. Thought along the perimeter of the front room, at least a table away from the traffic aisle, would probably be fine for an intimate dinner for two, certainly that would be difficult along the main aisle. We will certainly return and further explore the menu."

"Throw yourselves on the mercy of the chef and the sommelier: go for the tasting menu and paired wine flights: you will not be disappointed. Pours were generous, and of unusual variations on classic Italian grapes that I would not have chosen for myself. A Sangiovese based rose and a Sardinian Moscato-based dessert wine were stand outs. Our server was charming, unobtrusive and efficient. Ambiance and noise level are those of a busy osteria , but we were easily able to carry on our conversation at normal speaking levels."

"LUPA is not a fun restaurent, food is ok.You feel as though they are doing YOU a favor by accepting your reservation. I have been there a couple of times- and each time got worse and worse until this past week when I Showed up for a reserved table for 3.They bring us (we were with an ederly lady)to the worse table in the back restaurent with a chair being practically in the hallway. We asked for the table right next to it which was empty-but were told NO- that one was *reserved*.I mentionned that I called and asked for a special table, I was told that they "can't promise us" any special table.Awful service-even at 5:30PM-Women at Front desk are Pretentious-Bad Attitude and if you want the BEST ITalian food go to Emilio Balatto on HOUSTON !"

"Not the Lupa we remember. A downward trend started a few years ago. I gave them another chance recently. Menu lacks creativity. Food unattractively presented. Pasta- though cooked perfectly lacks flavor and is dumped in a bowl. Shame on you Mr. Batali. You can do better !.
BTW, watch out for "daily specials"... They are 30-50% higher priced than menu items. Getting wait staff ro reveal the price of specials is not easy.....
Service is bad. Rushed. Noisy. Not a place to enjoy a meal or a good bottle of wine. I am giving up on Batali establishments.... For simple Italian food, any of the Little Italy "tourist traps" can do as well (or better) than Lupa.
NYC has many wonderful restaurants. Lupa is no longer among them."

"I was actually disappointed in Lupa. It had great reviews online, but I found the food and atmosphere lacking. The front room was full, so we were put in the back room which has no decor at all. My main course was salty and gamey, not a fan. My dining companion did not like hers either. Wine was nice. Waiter was pretty good."

"The food at Lupa was very good, but it was extremely noisy and very crowded - which I really did not like. We chose to wait for a table in the back room, which was much better (still noisy, but not as bad). I thought the prices were high for what the place was like and what the food was like. I wish I had chosen another one of the "Batalai| restaurants instead of this one."

"We've been going to Lupa for years. This last visit was a drag. We had a table for 5. 4 guests arrived together but we were refused seating until 5th showed. We were all on time. Finally seated in back room with 5th person in chair directly in front of a constantly used door for staff. Finally moved to communal table where we were told we couldn't put in a quick antipasti order while we looked at the menu. Chefs rules. Way too much attitude at an old favorite restaurant. The food is good but not great and Batali has a very heavy hand with salt here."

"A really true to form concept. Simple and straight forward. I really appreciate the adherence to the concept. No deviation. Only issue we had was they tucked us back in a corner next to a radiant heating element. Maybe they did this because we had a nine year old with us. Not sure but other than that I would highly recommend for any one looking for a great food experience."

"We eat at Lupa everytime we are in NYC, probably 10 times in the last 10 years. On april 29th, the music was extremely loud and not appropriate for a dinner. It was a kind of heavy metal music that is probably liked by less than 1% of people that eat in this restaurant. The dessert plates were brutally thrown on the table. We will not come back next time we are in town.."

"Our entire family enjoyed the experience, we started with a affetati piccolo. For our meal, our 10-yr old enjoyed the Gnocchi, the 14-yr old loved his Lupa Pork and Veal Sausages and my Wife and I shared a wonderful Saltimbocca and Bucatini All Amatriciana. Then we wrapped it up with a Tartufo and a couple of Macchiatos The atmosphere was relaxing and casual."

"The service was spotty and apathetic. No one seemed motivated to attend to us. However the staff that cleared tables and the sommalier are the exception, both were excellent and attentive. For me, the salad was too salty and the flavones of the spring mix and fennel were overpowered both by salt and lemon. The oxtail gnocchi was flavorful but it could have been pulled pork or beef, it was simply over cooked. My wife throughly enjoyed her same salad though so my review is just my opinion. Her striped sea bass, she reported was perfect. We ended with some Lazio cheese and dessert. Very nice. With a $90 bottle of Barolo nouveau, our meal with tip was $250. Not bad but for that price I expect better service, waiters not smashing into me."
