Smörgås Chef Restaurant serves up super fresh seafood and prime meats based on centuries of Scandinavian & European culinary traditions. Zagat Survey says Smörgås Chef is "a refreshing change of pace", and Village Voice claims the food is "Damn Good."
Smörgås Chef's authentic Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberries have become famous. The New York Post calls Smörgås Chef the "Swedish Meatball Mecca" of New York. Smörgås Chef has also become known for its roasted rack of lamb with a goat cheese Sherry sauce, and its oven-baked Cod from the Kenai Peninsula.
For lunch, you will find a smorgasbord of open-face Scandinavian sandwiches like Coldwater Shrimp, Smoked Salmon with Egg & Chives, and Chicken Caramel with Norwegian goat cheese and asparagus. For weekend brunch, enjoy Scandinavian Baked Eggs with a chanterelle hollandaise, Eggs Benedict, Burgers, and Vanilla Waffles. The New York Times calls Smörgås Chef "a little treasure."
"Stumbled upon this place somewhere online and the menu just spoke to me. The actual place is super cute, the tables are pretty small as far as I saw, but it was prefect for my party of two. The decor is great, it's a mix of modern and kind of vintage. And the food if fantastic! I had the Meatballs and Lingonberries...it's fabulous. I've been to Scandinavia and it's very authentic. My boyfriend had the steak, and that was also amazing. It comes with the best brussel sprouts I've ever tasted. I'm not a fan of brussel sprouts, but those converted me. Overall, the food is fantastic, the staff is very friendly and the service is great. I definitely recommend it to everyone."

"Overall, we enjoyed ourselves at Smorgas Chef. The highlight was probably their Smorgas board, which provides a taste of various dishes. If you're looking for a taste of Scandinavia in New York, this is a good spot."

"My fiancee is Norwegian. We eat a lot of Scandanavian food. Smorgas Chef delivers! Their take on a number of traditional dishes was fresh, creative, and most importantly, delicious.
The service was crisp, cordial and warm, especially the host/hostess and bar staff. The ambiance was dark and warm at the same time. Would definitely go again."

"There's nothing better than an al fresco lunch on a beautiful spring day...except Swedish meatballs! My first trip to this little gem on the west side, but it definitely won't be the last. The food was superb, and the service was even better. We had the meatballs and salmon, along with drinks and the rice pudding dessert. All lovely. The crowd was sophisticated and interesting as well."

"Not my first time at Smörgås and this time was no different: great drinks, delicious food and we got to sit outside this time. We were at the last table on the side, it was chilly outside, and quiet. We had a great time enjoying our meal and just relaxing. I got them to make me an Aquavit martini with a splash of champagne- I will definitely be getting that again!"

"Unfortunately our food was not really good... I ordered the cod fish as a main course, the vegetables were so overcooked that I could not eat them... the sauce was desintegrating, thus thick and watery at the same time (you could taste the starch). One had the impression that the dish had been prepared hours before being served. My husband also felt that the sauce for the meatballs contained too much starch. The chocolate choux also tasted old - plus, lemon sugar and moka sauce simply do not go together. We love Swedish food and were disappointed overall. And a check for over $200 was definitely overpriced. The gravalax was ok, though."

"Smorgas has really come a long way. I have been going to this location as well as downtown Stone Street location since they opened. Lately it seems as if they have gotten a lot better. The daily specials are top notch, fresh ingredients, creative, whole food and delicious. They keep me coming back to see what's next."

"Loved it. The food was majestic in its own right with a wonderful array of decadent samplings ranging from meatballs to cod and so forth. It was a journey into Nordic fare that was truly magnificent. I plan on returning soon!"

"We were very impressed with the quality and relative pricing. This restaurant is associated with Belnheim Farms and you can certainly taste the freshness. Our first time, definitely not the last!"

"Wasn't wowed by it, they gave us a little trouble for not having printed out the Gilt voucher, but that was resolved fast. The Swedish meatballs were delicious with the Lingonberry sauce and mashed potatoes, as well as the Parsnip Soup. But the Pork Two Ways was dry and the Sea Food Casserole was lacking anything special. The butter for the bread was amazing though! All in all, I wouldn't not come back, but I wouldn't seek it out."

"I love sitting by the window in this small, charming West Village restaurant. Nothing better than feasting on the marvelous Swedish meatballs. I love the fish here too(herring, gravlox, the works) but those meatballs keep me coming back. If you're a coffee lover, theirs is strong and tasty. Friendly service. Very pleasant for brunch or lunch during the week."

"This was my second time coming here and still find it to be a wonderful treat. We had a 4 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Every course was delicious and the wine pairings worked really well. My husband loves the Dragon Tattoo cocktail. I tried the Miss Bliss, which was sweet but good. The parsnip soup is delicous, as are the swedish meatballs. But the seafood casserole was my favorite course - mussels, scallops, salmon - all cooked to perfection. The vanilla waffles are a wonderful dessert also. I can't say enough good things about this place. I will return again and again."
