"We dine at 5 Crowns whenever we visit O. C. Over several years we have dined there - as a couple, with our granddaughter, with relatives. We always leave happy, sated and looking forward to a future visit. Our granddaughter, now 10, still remembers every aspect of her visit a year ago. THE BEST."

"I've driven by Five Crowns many times and our anniversary gave us a reason to try something new. The outside structure was nice and inviting. However, the inside seemed old and dard. The hostess was very nice and congratulated us on our anniversay.
We started in the Sidedoor lounge and again, it seemed very dark and a bit musty. The waitress was very nice and patient with us.
We sat in the interior of the restraunt for dinner. Had a nice table and the waitress was very nice. A little too much upselling, but it didn't bother me much. We ordered a bottle of champagne and got a visit from Tommy, the sommelier. He was so nice and very pleasant to talk to.
Glad we tried it. but probably only a one time visit."

"We were seated promptly at a round table for 6 downstairs. The food was fantastic as always. My husband and I had the traditional prime rib medium rare with creamed spinach, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. My mom had salmon, which she said was excellent. My dad had lobster bisque (yum) & chicken that was very moist & delicious. My son had chicken fingers from the kids menu, which was breast meat breaded in a pankow type coating. Crispy & juicy. My daughter had the spiral pasta with butter and parmesan-nothing to write home about, but acceptable. We shared chocolate cake & strawberry rhubarb crumble for dessert. Both were delectable. Service was prompt & friendly. We used to go a lot more-before kids... We will definitely be back!"

"Unfortunately, we made reservations the week before Mother's Day and as you might expect the restaurant was busy. We were seated near a high traffic area near doorways and foot traffic both from patrons as well as staff was constant. The tip of the day is to request a patio if you can predict the weather. I noticed nice tables along the side and just beyond where we were sitting outside."

"Food (prime rib and creamed corn, spinach, & mashed potatoe sides) itself was quite good as usual but service left something to be desired. Perhaps they were rushed or short staffed. In addition, a person at the table next to us carelessly knocked over a glass of water with her purse as she was getting up and spilled it on our legs and feet. She made no apology and although the servers made an attempt to dry the floor with towels, and were aware we had gotten quite wet, made no serious attempt to help us or accommodate us in any way for the resulting discomfort on our part."

"Five Crowns was recommended and were not disappointed. Excellent with attention to all details. We chose from the Tasting Menu. The Leek Soup was delicious and very subtle, the Caesar Salad with dressing on the side, was good except it had cherry tomatoes, not part of this salad, but it didn't detract from it. We both had the Prime Rib, which we requested medium but came medium well. With the au jus, it was very good and tasty. Our desserts, Creme Brulee for me, was delicious and my husband's Cheesecake was quite good, not too sweet and tasted freshly made. The wines were appropriate. Since we were staying in the Newport Coast area, this was just the right distance and the waitstaff made it very pleasant."

"Imagine this... you are in a very upscale, expensive restaurant, and you don't want the vegetables that come with a dish, so you ask for another selection, which is also on the menu... and they tell you "No."
Imagine if you said you would be willing to pay any difference in price from what comes with the dish (Creamed spinach), to the veggies you really want (brussel sprouts)... and they say "No."
Imagine that you spend over $140.00 for two (without a bottle of wine), and that you could not get a simple substitution of vegetables on your plate, even when you offered to pay the difference.
That's what happened at 5 Crowns.
Hardly up to 5-star service.
On top of that, the food was good, but nothing extraordinary. Certainly not worth $"

"We have been dining here off and on for years and always leave happy with choosing this wonderful restaurant! There's not a better place for Prime Rib, and the service is attentive without being suffocating. Tommy, the wine steward, is their "national treasure" and everyone loves him!! We always ask to be seated in Maria's section as we enjoy her friendly, professional service. CC Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae with two spoons is THE BEST way to end the meal. Remember, calories don't count when you're eating out!!"

"Usually going to the Five Crowns is a pure delight. Not so this time (and it makes one wonder if there is a new manager at the helm). The food was good but not great (the bleu cheese wedge salad was not well executed). More problematic: in the interest of shoehorning in more patrons they seem to have set up a new bank of small tables in the front room with cheap, uncomfortable chairs, placed far too close together to prevent conversation with one's companion from becoming a public event. And traditionally the waitresses have been warm, welcoming, and delightfully low-key. The one we had last night was loud, intrusive, snippy, and seemed a little to eager to hustle us along. We had a good time, but not the usual great Five Crowns experience."

"Took advantage of the $45 Tasting menu; the wedge was Fabulous!! The crab cake was disappointing in appearance and quantity. The chicken was GREAT, the prime rib was thin and uneven in cut. The cheesecake was below your quality and the bowl the Crème Brule was served in was way too large.
First time sitting on the patio; there were several large parties, we were a party of two. The volume of noise was overwhelming and distracting. Would suggest using the patio for LARGE groups rather than parties of two (unless specified).

"It's nice to see that some of the "old" items are back to the way they were prior to the new chef taking over and making a lot of unnecessary changes to a wonderfully warm and coozy atmosphere.....such as the "wait staff" being more attentive individual needs with water, butter, etc., instead of having a bottle of water on the take to help one self or providing a small desert for the birthday guest instead of a cheesie birthday card. One thing that would be nice is a couple more appetizer items to choose from. Also, the wine list seems to be very nice, but a bit pricy for those of us on a limited income. It would have been nice to see a couple of wines with a more affordable price. What happened to the "house wines" of the past?"

"Like the other restaurants in the Lawry's group, prime rib is a big thing here and it's very good. I mean very good. Done perfectly and served with two sides and Yorkshire Pudding. I got the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach and while the potatoes were very good the spinach was a quite heavy with bacon and that was basically all you could taste. Did I say the prime rib was great?
My girlfriend got the pork chop and it was huge and had a fantastic flavor.
They have a decent wine list, nothing huge but the wines they've chosen are very good.
The staff were all very friendly and really seemed to care you were enjoying yourself with numerous trips asking if everything was okay or if we needed anything else."

"I am so glad they updated their menu. Last year when I came there was only one thing on the menu I wanted. The $45 special was great. The perfect size-not too little, not too much. The price was still a little high but the ambiance was worth it. The nice server knew so much about the history of 5 CROWNS it was fun to get a few words from her. Would love to have a small booklet about the history to buy or read while we dine."

"I love the changes since the last time we had dinner here (better music, no costumes, superb service, great food) -- this place has the best prime rib anywhere and my wife liked her pasta with mushrooms as well. The artichoke appetizer was also very good. The prices are steep so this isn't a place to frequent often, but every so often will do. The new Side Door pub on the side seems really cool and a location that we will want to get back to."

"I was a bit surprised by the appetizer of crab cakes, it consisted of one crab cake the size a of half-dollar. The creme brûlée was so small as well. Don't bother ordering the mac n cheese it is not flavorful at all and not worth eating for the calories it contains. I had the filet mignon and it was very delicious. For $42 it is not great that it doesn't come with anything else so I had to order side dishes. The wine list is good. We had several different waiters so it was a bit confusing for them. They didn't know who ordered what from drinks to food, we were always having to direct them. Crazy but no salt and pepper on the table we had to flag down someone elses waiter to ask for salt and pepper. I won't return anytime soon."

"This was my first time dining at Five Crowns (except for Side Door). Overall I thought it was good with a few exceptions... The dining room seems a TAD too bright. It would be nice it is was a little darker for more ambiance. The service was excellent - top notch.
I decided to go with the sea bass, but was disappointed. There was no mention of it being prepared with the skin still on....and therefore it was not only work but a little dry. :-(
My friend had the chicken that he seemed to enjoy. We brought our own bottle of wine. I feel a $20 corkage is a bit high - $15 is more reasonable. I live 2 blocks away - if I go back I will have steak!"

"Prime rib is always consistently tender and roasted to perfection. You can cut it with a butter knife, seriously, even when you order it rare. Their whipped horseradish is a must! Five Crowns has the best souffles on the planet so save room for it. Roasted bone marrow is a signature side dish and is served with french fried onions. I think I prefer the bone cut into cylinders versus the cross-section. A lot of it was absorbed by the white cloth napkin underneath."

"Our family went for Easter dinner and the food, and serviceWas not good. In fact it was probably the worst prime rib dinner we have ever had. We heard thatt lawrys own them and thought the food would be as good. They had a limited menu to order from ofOnly 5 items for Easter. When we booked our reservation they never Told us that it would be a limited menu. Also the resturant was not busy even On Easter Sunday. We we very disappointed."
