Atwood Café Reviews List

Atwood Café

Atwood Café is an intimate, romantic, must dine Chicago classic restaurant adjacent to the world famous Burnham Hotel. (An Al Capone hangout) This is one of Chicago's most historical buildings located in the heart of Chicago's Central Business District. Only blocks away from Architectural river boat tours and directly along the State Street retail shopping circuit and the many Art’s of the theater district. Enjoy fresh, locally farmed ingredients while dining in our vibrant, must see, dining room. Chef Derek Simcik and our attentive staff offer excellent service, “contemporary” American comfort food in a memorable setting. Atwood Café is a Chicago staple, casual restaurant in the heart of the Loop, featuring a creative twist on what, in one time, was referred to as American comfort food.

Come and ENJOY an inexpensive lunch, business breakfast, great brunch or fabulous intimate "one of a kind" dinner. Very close to tourist attractions too. See you there!

"In the heart of the Chicago Loop, and in the historic Reliance Building, this restaurant has always thrilled me. It's large glass windows look out on State & Washington and the passing crowds. It is a great place to take out of town visitors. The food in very good, inventive, and the presentation attractive. Staff are cheerful and friendly, and are willing to make an effort to please you for any special request. It is pricey but worth it for a special occasion. . ."

"Located in a beautiful, historic Chicago Loop building at the base of the Hotel Burnham, this delightful and cozy spot is a favorite for Sunday brunch. Splendid art deco decor, high ceilings and large windows make this a perfect rendezvous for friends. Food is tasty and ranges from classic to unusual. Experienced wait staff provides excellent service."

"A member of our party has a severe gluten intolerance. The chefs were very good about having menu items prepared that would accommodate her needs. The room was rather quiet and the decor was lovely. The food was great and the service was good. We were quite pleased."

"Poor, slow and ignoring service. I tried to order a second glass of wine three times, and gave up. My white fish was frozen mush and lacking in flavor. I looked forward to going to Atwood and have taken it off my list for the future."

"The Atwood Cafe is an elegantly appointed restaurant in the Burnham hotel. The food is always good as is the service. The wine list is pricey but the food is reasonably priced for the quality. There is outdoor dining if you don;t mind being seated on a busy corner with lots of traffic. I prefer the pleasant indoor ambience."

"Tried this favorite spot of friend's this past Sunday and were pretty disappointed. Great ambiance & good service but portions were very small and several dishes were mediocre (risotto @ $26!, gazpacho, one of the salads) Whitefish was good, as was the celery soup. Overall we gave it a C+ and probably won't go back."

"thoroughly enjoyed the food, and the service staff was friendly and attentive
our only issue was the proximity of other tables and dinners. If we ever get the chance to return, will request a separate window table in our reservation
ending on a positive note, greatly appreciated how the staff allowed us to move one of the sidewalk tables for dessert"

"We arrived for an early dinner to find an almost empty dining room. We were shown to a very small table for two and were obliged, upon request, with an alternate ,more commodious, adjacent table. Our server was very cordial and helpful in explaining the menu, expediting our ordering. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. The dining room filled to capacity during our time there and did become somewhat noisy. But we had an early curtain and left before the noise became a problem for us
I have been to Atwood many times and always have a pleasant experience. This was no exception.

"The food was good, the room beautiful, romantic, the location excellent. However, we will not go back
1/ when we arrived for our 8pm reservation, no one was there to greet us. We stood like 2 idiots at the host stand, waiting to be acknowledged... Bad first impression.
2/ the server, Patrick, was fine but there was a total lack of BUSSERS SERVICE;, our entrees were delivered while the salad plates were not cleared.
After we finished the said entrees, our plates, empty but for the lamb chop bones stayed and stayed in front of us, nobody noticing anything. The place was not even busy then and the manager just stood there.
For a restaurant of that caliber and prices ( $30 entrees), it is a level of service unacceptable.

"My husband and I were expecting a lunch menu and it was Brunch. That being said I felt the choices were a bit mundane. After veiwing website menus we were expecting much more avante guard choices and variety. When I travel to large cities I want to really get someting A=Mah=zing. I felt waht we recieved was not. Not bad, just not exceptional. I had the Coq a vin eggs benedict and my husbund had a bland vegi burger. Ambience was Awesome."

"For years this was my favorite place for dinner or a special lunch but no more. The menu was very limited and no longer had any of my favorites (hint: oven roasted acorn squash). Dessert was fantastic but other than that not much to recommend. I won't be going back. (Insert sad face here.)"

"The manager was extremely pleasant and welcoming and the staff attentive. For the starter we had a kale salad. Sprinkled with red onion, smoked duck, and parmasan, it had a lovely mix of flavours. The lamb was perfectly done as well. Portions are just nice (not large) and dishes had an interesting mix of ingredients that balanced welll. Decor exuded old world charm."

"Was there recently for a business dinner. Food just doesn't cut it & the wine list is non-existent. Is is BAD? No. Is it worth returning? NO. This place may have been great once, but no more based on this visit. I ordered the ribeye and the meat was of mediocre quality and pre-cut with sinew/nerves in every piece. I'll spare you comments on the rest of the meal.
Service was great, ambiance is also nice. I'm not picky, but for me, in the end, the key criteria for any restaurant is food excellence. If that's not there the rest doesn't matter. This one falls far short of the mark."

"My dad and I decided to eat at the Atwood while he was visiting from California, and we were absolutely delighted. My meal was excellent, starting with a tuna tartar, followed by rabbit scallopini, and finished with a chocolate cake. The portions were fitting - the appetizer was plated to whet my appetite, not stifle it - and the new Spring menu was well designed. However, the real treat was the service. Our waitress, Jillian, was incredibly friendly and helpful, and all of her recommendations proved excellent. As my dad and I are passionate wine lovers, we particularly enjoyed it when she stopped for a moment to discuss our mutual love of the bottle. Her pleasant and affable manner turned a good meal into a memorable one."

"A friend and I spent a lovely 90 minutes enjoying the food and ambience at Atwood Cafe during the last week of May. From the fritto misto to the comforting chicken pot pie and light whitefish entrees and on to the indulgent chocolate cake and "s'mores" desserts, everything tasted delicious and the service was attentive yet unobtrusive. I hadn't eaten here in several years, which I now realize hasbeen a major oversight!"

"We chose the Atwood because we were staying at the Burnham Hotel. We enjoyed the ambience and our server was pleasant. We ordered ceviche, which had very little flavor. I had the scallops, which for $25.00 I was served about 10 small scallops in a chicken consomme with the same green sprigs that were served with the ceviche. Again, very little flavor. I will not go back for dinner."

"My husband and I were celebrating our one-month anniversary while we were in Chicago for Memorial Day weekend, and we had Sunday Brunch at Atwood Cafe. My husband had the southern style eggs benedict, which was divine! Rather than using the traditional English muffin with the eggs benedict, they used cornbread with BBQ and eggs atop paired with breakfast potatoes. I had a more traditional breakfast that hit the spot. Our server Keith was a delight, and after he found out we were newlyweds celebrating, he had the kitchen prepare a small decadent chocolate cake with raspberry ice cream and fresh berries on the house. If you're staying near The Loop in Chicago, this place is a must go. I highly recommend it!"

"Good for pre-theater dining. My lamb chops were properly cooked but slathered with too much sauce. Service is friendly. Kitchen is fast. Dining room needs a makeover. "I did it for the 1,000 point table.""

"Another reviewer referenced the garden salad as being so fresh it seemed it was grown on site-their assumption seems correct. The scallops entree was plentiful, light, moist, and delicious. Great wine and Giovanni was a great guide for the evening. Perfect visit as always."

"This is the second time within about 6 months I've eaten at the Atwood Café. I love the ambiance and intimacy of the room. You are able to have a conversation with the person across the table without having to tune out loud music or the echo of other tables. The risotto was good but needed more parmesan cheese. The chef was nice enough to replace the mushrooms with asparagus since mushrooms are yucky. I ordered the soup of the day which was so thick it reminded me of baby food, so the taste was excellent but consistency not so much. My companion ordered the duck and it was cooked perfectly."

"I loved the art deco charming elegant decor of this restaurant. The food and service were impeccable. My wife and I partook in the Sunday brunch at Atwood Cafe and enjoyed it immensely. She had the Eggs Benedict with over fried potatoes and I had the Mushroom Burger with Boursin and watercress topped with honey cream fraiche and salad greens delicately tossed with a light vinaigrette. It was superb! I would go back there in a heart beat."

"This is the first time I have dined outside at Atwood. The experience was positive overall, but service was not as good as I remember when dining inside. The food was excellent, but very small portions. The wine and drinks are overpriced. I will return because I do like the quality of the food. I just cannot make this my first choice for dining because of the cost."
