"Somewhat weirdly located, in Chinatown, but all good. The steak was delicious and the 3 course menu for $46 was a nice change from the $46 steaks that are normally served without a site dish, which is also included.
Very friendly staff. Interior is somewhat different, perhaps a little dated, but it has charme.
Absolutely worth a 20 min walk if you staying in the Union Square area like we were."

"Every time my wife and I come San Francisco we go to Alfred's and have great time and meal. They have a great wine list, steaks and more. The service is the best not too fast or slow, just right. It's an old world feel inside where you feel good dressing up. The next time we are in San Franciscowe will be back!"

"After chancing on Alfred's we gave it a try and were more than impressed. The service was great and efficient and not over the top -- friendly and helpful. Oysters and shrimp nice way to start and then a fillet that was cooked to perfection. It was also the right size and we couldn't envisage the 30 ounce steak -- almost enough for a village. Booth made conversation at normal levels and we will certainly be back!!"

"I walked in for my wife's birthday and the atmosphere was great and the waiter was attentive, but both our steaks were given to us wrong (my wife wanted hers medium, i wanted well ) hers was given more to the well side mine was charred and dry and when i brought it to the waiters attention he was obviously annoyed. my wife and i enjoy good food but we know a horse and pony show when we see it. lessons can be learned from ruth chris' (delivery not just reputation.)"

"Relaxed and comfortable. Our small group celebrating birthdays found the thick steaks and rack of lamb (2!) perfectly done and servings generous. Delicious and very tender osso bucco on homemade gnocchi. Pasta in homemade ravioli had was pleasantly al dente and the sauce well rounded. Beautiful steamed vegetables were straight forward and just right. Spinach in both the creamed spinach and ravioli tasted fresh and had a slight crunch. Wedge salad with bacon and blue cheese dressing was classic. Do order salad dressings on the side as the dressed Caesar salad was over dressed. Those of us who did enjoyed our salads very much.

"Alfred's is a venerable steak house that has been around for 75 years. The decor is vintage. The service is very good and the host was quite engaging. Unfortunately the steak while tender and properly cooked lacked flavor and needed a sauce which shouldn't be the case for a piece of dry aged corn feed beef. I had a delicious desert of chocolate chip bread pudding. Overall a good experience but not the great one I had hoped for."

"I'm always looking to capture the late 1950's chic of San Francisco. Since Ernie's restaurant (in the movie Vertigo) no longer exists, my friends brought me here. Excellent choice. We sat in a booth and though the restaurant was crowded, the noise level was good for conversation among four (mature) people. My friend had the ribeye and he thought it very good. I'm vegetarian and thoroughly enjoyed ordering vegetable side orders (brilliantly yummy). Alfred's is located in an area of town that enabled us to bar hop for our 'after dinner' drinks (so fun). I like to think the name Alfred's is for Hitchcock - but, alas, the restaurant was established in 1928 (so not possible). Nice decor, energetic bar, good service, go there...."

"We were expecting traditional steakhouse as was advertised, but there were many families there and the overall noise levels were much more than expected. The food was really nothing special - the meat was not top grade. Overall, the food was okay - just nothing special - the service was acceptable. "Very good meal. Only real 'complaint' would be that there idea of med rare is different than mine; the steak I have was quite rare. Also, half the desserts we had as options under the full 'meal deal' were unavailable because, according to the waiter, someone had left the freezer open and all the ice cream had melted. Waiter didn't seem too concerned and offered no alternatives or even an apology. Overall though, it was a good dining experience. The deal they offer for appetizer, main course and dessert is a good value."

"Everything was fantastic from the appetizers to the desserts. Service was outstanding. The appetizers and The Cream of Mushroom Soup were very tasty. Our steaks were cooked to perfection. Good choice of side dishes. Dinner was topped off with some delicious desserts. The 3-hour parking validation is nice as parking spaces are so scarce. We will definitely be returning to Alfred's and I look forward to another wonderful dining experience."

"I recently went to this place with my father and brothers for a meal that I was skeptical about but was totally surprised how well the food was. I had the Filet and it was perfect. The wine selection was pretty good and the ambiance was great. The waiter was very attentive and would only interrupt us when he saw that we were finished with our meal. All in all I highly recommend Alfred's as a place to go and will send my friends and clients here."

"Good welcome, but the Service was fair at the most. Waiter was nearly always in a rush, although we went early and the restaurant was not busy at all. The food was average, not bad, but I wouldn´t come again. We had the Bullmarket menu for two and ended up with 152$. Including the Autotip of 18%. A unique experience."

"Would not recommend Alfreds. We ordered the Filet and Maine lobster combo entree. I love Maine lobster but when they brought the plate I could tell it wasn't Maine lobster. THey used the ole' "bait and switch" technique. I kept waiting for the waiter to tell us it wasn't from Maine and he never did. So I asked the busboy who asked the maitre d. He told us the lobster was from Honduras. It was awful. Overcooked and no flavor. Also I specifically filled stated that it was my husbands birthday and that I wanted a slice of cake to be brought out and they never brought it even though I asked twice. I was very disappointed."

"Alfred's is for somebody looking for a traditional SF dining experiance that likes real food, (If your looking for stacked garnished princess portions that you eat with tweazers this is not your place). This is a very special Restaurant for special occasions, big deals are closed over these meals."

"This place does steak, and does it right. You get what you order, and nothing to distract you from it. Whether it's just a steak with fries, or a steak with _everything_ you can think of, you get what you asked for, and it's perfect.
And if you're looking for something nice to drink with your steak, the bar selections is extensive.
Service is sometimes a little slow, so don't eat here if you're in a hurry. But the food is so good, you shouldn't eat here if you're in a hurry anyways. :)"

"Enjoyed the Osso Bucco although it was not as good as expected. Soup of the Day was Chicken with Black Bean; waiter should have cautioned the soup was spicy. Wine list was very limited as compared to other Steakhouses. Another table celebrated a birthday/anniversary and surprised all with a bagpiper! Overall a unique if not special evening."

"Came in for a work dinner with 7 people. Food was very good. One issue we had is we had a 5:30PM reservation and our entire party was there about 5:40PM, but we didn't get seated until nearly 6:30PM and that was only because we sought out the host to request to be seated. The reason this was an issue is some of our party had plans later so that's why we had such an early reservation. Since it was so early, the tables were available but just didn't get us seated."

"I have been to Alfred's twice now (both for special occasions) and I must say the food has been outstanding and consistent both times. Alfred's is a good old fashioned style steak house, and if you order a martini they leave the shaker with you (You get about 3 drinks out of it NICE....)! The only reason I HAD to give this tremendous steak house 4 stars is that the service is incredibly to slow (perhaps it is part of their motif). I mean had to take the check to our server... The staff is very friendly though and knowledgeable. You can see all of the meats curing in the dry age locker (pretty cool). So if you are there take a peak in the locker, the maitre'd will even explain the entire process to you if you ask him! How cool is that?! :)"
