"B&S is noted as an excellent steak houses in a city with a lot of choices. The steaks are still good. The restaurant suffers from being a bit shopworn. The menus leave a bad impression; they look as if they have been in service for many years. Guys, paper is cheap! The service is harried, not seeing our third arrival, so his menu, drink, etc. had to keep being requested, not automatically delivered.
Steaks were good as we're sides. The seafood tower for $100 was a weak presentation and certainly not worth the cost. Half a dozen shrimp, some oysters, a small pile of little crab hunks on lettuce and 2 king crab knuckles. Shame on them!
There are a lot of choices for steak in Philly; this is not the best one."

"Our waitress did not explain the pricing if I substitute swordfish instead of Filet Mignon, when I ordered she just said "u can order how ever u want" but I would of felt better if she explained the change in pricing & told that that she would order everything separate."

"The waiter was PHENOMENAL! He was so attentive, gave real advice on what my family would like best (rather than what would be most expensive), and made great conversation with all of us. We came for my university graduation dinner and couldn't have been more pleased. For four we ordered the Delmonico, the Porterhouse for two, the hash browns, and creamed spinach. The food was more than enough, the steaks were amazingly tender and very very flavorful. Our waiter even kindly gave us a Baked Alaska on the house as a congratulations gift! Overall an amazing dinner with amazing staff."

"Went to Butcher and Singer for a graduation dinner. Though we had to wait a half an hour for our reservation, the hostess and then the manager kept us well informed of the reason and made up for it by offering complimentary champagne and dessert. The food was excellent (definitely the best steak in town). The ambiance and the service were great."

"My wife and I went here on a Saturday night for our wedding Anniversary. The restaurant is beautiful, dark woods, high ceilings, Sinatra music playing in the background. It is very dark. We got started with vodka martinis and raw oysters. The combination was heavenly. The Butcher salad was great too.
Service was quite simply outstanding yet non obtrusive. We ordered the Porterhouse steak for two, and asked if it could be grilled with peppercorns and served with cognac cream sauce. A few problems here. Instead of large peppercorns coating both sides of the steak, there were medium / fine granules of pepper applied HEAVILY to the steak. The sauce did not taste like the one my wife had tried in France. Everything else - outstanding."

"We had steak for two which was excellent but served in ice cold plates(!!!!) and when I asked for warm plates they come just a very very little warm and just on one side !! and in the meantime the meat become cold. As I complained with the maitre D he had to argue almost as it was our fault and it took another long moment to get finally really warm plates. This is the first time this happens in a steak house (and we are very often in US and have many dinners in steak houses) and I don't think whenever we are again in Philadelphia we will stop at this one, there is a great choice of others...."

"We have been to B&S, and most of the other Starr restaurants; many times. It was nice that the manager acknowledged that by coming over to the table to introduce himself. At this restaurant's price point the food should be spectacular and the service should be impeccable. We were not disappointed. Our crab, oyster and salad starters were all very good and when the entrees arrived; my NY Strip, daughter's Filet and wife's Halibut were all wonderful and the shared brussels sprouts and stuffed hash browns were fantastic too. This is our favorite place for steak and may be my fovorite restaurant overall, certainly top five. It is expensive, but worth it."

"Wonderful food and good atmosphere. The service, though friendly, was very slow and inattentive. My guess it was due to our group of 7 and our waiter did not have to work for his tip since we were automatically charged 20% tip for the large group. Other smaller groups were seated and finished before we were done. It took us 3 hrs to get out of the restaurant, instead of the usual 2 at other high-end restaurants we ate at earlier in the week. Downtown has too many excellent restaurants for me to come back here and experience inattentive service."

"I took several friends who were visiting me from out-of-town to Butcher & Singer on Saturday night. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived for our reservation but we were seated immediately and greeted by Brian – our server. I can’t say enough good things about Brian; he was extremely personable, knowledgeable about the menu, and attentive - anticipating our every need and want. Definitely the best service I have had in a while. Just like the service, the food exceeded our expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers, steaks, and sides. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious! (The stuffed hash-browns were amazing!) I will definitely return again and again."

"Really, if I had to describe the experience, it would be simply stated as "Heavenly." Starting with the the first view as you walk in, the lighting is warm and romantic with shades of red and rich wood. With the wait staff in crisp tuxedos, the patrons dressed beautifully, you instantly feel as if you were stepping back in time. Our waiter Brian was wonderful, helping us to choose our cocktails when we asked him what he recommended and even what to order as he described the menu in such a way it was hard to decide. But it didnt take much to convince me to order the Delmonico - Oscar style and the first bite made me close my eyes in bliss. Our experience was wonderful and needless to say - Delicious! I will be returning soon."

"The service was excellent and the food was really good. My Delmonico steak was excellent well done like I like my steaks and still juicy. You MUST try the stuffed hash browns, I have never had anything like that in my life ...it was really good. "The wait staff would not leave us alone. We could barely complete a sentence without someone coming over to fill our water glasses for the 20th time, or do some other chore at the table, or ask us repeatedly how things were. We came to have a good dinner and enjoy our conversation. We could do with less interruptions so we can talk amongst ourselves. Wait staff should be discrete and only there when needed.
The lamb chops were inconsistent. One was very good the other very fatty. For that price, both should have been very good.
Disappointing experience. We were excited to go as we had not been at Butcher for a few months. I don't know if we will go back again."

"We didn't think that the food was up to the usual Stephen Starr quality. We expect Starr restaurants to "wow" us with tastes, but Butcher and Singer was just good. The service was outstanding, however, which we always receive at Starr restaurants."

"Overall enjoyed the experience. Waitstaff was very professional and restaurant decor and ambiance met all my expectations for their reputation. Appetizers were tasty and wine was good. Ordered the 12oz steak, and the chef was wonderful to cut it in half to share but, the meat itself was not up to par. Otherwise, great place, but not for steak."

"Everything was delicious from start to finish. The service was excellent. Slightly darker than I'd like it, but the candles did make a mood. It felt special as soon as we were seated. This will be a real family favorite! Lots if birthdays going on, including mine. Nice place for celebrating."

"this place never disappoints. if you are a burger person or an occasional burger person the lunch time buger simply cannot be topped. but you dont have to be a carnivore to love this place. thhere is something for everyone on their menu and the wait staff and chef could not be more accommodating. we love the whole experience of being in their space. an outstanding choice for any reason!"

"We were out for our anniversary and treated great from the moment we walked in the door. Tim took very good care of us and made great suggestions on the food and wine. We had a great table and the food was wonderful we enjoyed a perfect porter house the hash brown potato dish and creamed spinach was wonderful. We finished with a wonderful slice of cheese cake. We will be back in the near future. Thank you for a wonderful evening."

"Went for my birthday. Pink French sparkling wine only $44... Great deal! Oysters, crab shrimp Louie salad, porterhouse, delmonico, hash browns, to die for Brussel sprouts, cognac sauce ( be sure to ask about sauces as they are not on the menu), baked Alaska, two glasses of red wine and one cocktail. $320 with tip for two.... Pricey yes but deeeeelish! Plenty left over for a nice lunch. The have nice booths like the Brown Derby for romantic dining."
