This Old Chelsea food hall is a New York original. The Red Cat's combination of come-as-you-are sensibilities and straightforward, satisfying, and occasionally irreverent cuisine instantly establish the restaurant as a favorite with New York diners. Bill McDaniel runs the kitchen that's become famous for such whimsical creations as Reuben Wontons with Red Cabbage Slaw and Pan Roasted Cod with Flageolets, Moroccan Olives, Oranges and Basil Oil. Such dishes only add to the restaurant's mystique as a place for all seasons, styles and spirits. As Frank Bruni wrote in the New York Times "The Red Cat feels vaguely colonial and tavern like, except when it feels downtown-gallery cool, and apart from those moments when it feels modestly and eclectically elegant."

"The Red Cat was recommended by a New Yorker I met in Mexico when she knew I would be staying in Chelsea. It was close to our hotel but it is worth making a special trip to. The food was amazing, very interesting and our server was really helpful. I would love to go back."

"Consistently good and equally good at changing up their menu with the seasons. Such a good and well priced wine list, not too complicated with good clear choices."

"The Cat never disappoints. Had a great meal with 2 out of town guests. The cod fish was perfect We orded the tempura green beans- listed as a side dish- as and appetizer and shared them with our salad course Great attentive expert service from the staff. Have been going here for years and NEVER experienced an off night either in the front or back of the house."

"I reserved a table over a month in advance and when we got to the restaurant with our party of 5, the restaurant was empty. We asked to sit at the empty table by the window but was told it was reserved. We then were told to wait while our table was getting ready and when we were finally seated, we were taken to possibly the worst table in the place which was one foot from the huge push thru kitchen doors. I kindly asked if we could sit at any of the dozens of empty tables and were told the tables were reserved and they don't push tables together. We did stay, but the management didn't even have the decency to comp a thing..not even a cup of coffee at the end. The food was ok but certainly not that great that it would be worth returning."

"I'm always pleased when I go to Red Cat. From my many business dinners there to bringing visitors new to NY. The bar is staffed by super-attentive and personable bartenders. They also know their wines, and are generous enough to give you a sample pour before you commit. The food is always fab, and the service just right."

"I knew Red Cat is considered one of the best in the city, but I was not prepared for how fantastic the food was. Everything from the appetizer to melts-in-your-mouth fish entrees to the savory and tart blueberry pie was just superb. And the wine list was quite impressive for its diverse and superior quality wines. Now I see what all the fuss has been about all these years. We'll be back soon!"

"The food is not great, location is nice and service is decent. I would skip it - there are so many other places in the city that are much better for the price. I would have enjoyed a quick stop at Westville better - even when I was looking for something more classy."

"Great place to go after looking at art all aftrnoon. Staff is warm and friendly-food excellent. My husband and I shared the goat cheese souffle-yummy--- and The Red Cat has the best liver entree in town. We are liver-lovers. Dessert was Brooklyn black forest cake. Wonderful meal-will be back again. Lorraine"

"Two people in our party are vegans. They had an ample selection of items to order. In fact, they liked the rapini, a side dish, so much that they ordered a second portion. I intended to order the duck, which was on the restaurant's website. The restaurant had no duck that evening. The waitress apologized profusely, saying that the restaurant tries to change its menu and website seasonally and keep them consistent with each other. As an alternative, I had the kid, which was tasty.
The atmosphere was comfortable and inviting. We were not rushed. I would eat in this restaurant again."

"Food was, as always, divine. This time, however, service was terrible. We waited over 15 minutes for tap water and had to ask 3 times, eventually finding a different waiter to serve us water. Very unusual for Red Cat. But, the food was heavenly."

"I have no complaints about Red Cat. I found nothing to rave about, either. The ambiance was pleasant, the food was good, I didn't leave unhappy. Everything was acceptable. Nothing was extraordinary."

"Went for lunch. Service was very friendly and professional. Food was great. The $25 lunch special is an amazing value. Mushroom risotto, baked polenta, chicken salad were all perfect!! The little banana split for dessert was just the perfect size, too. Just a great place for a Sunday lunch. I can't wait to go back for dinner."

"Second time at Red Cat and it was as good as the first. Very good food; nice choices on the menu and reasonably priced options on the wine list. Waitstaff is excellent--they are familiar with the food and wine, and are attentive and accomodating. We had a reservation for 6 pm and they did not rush us at all. We were able to linger through coffee and dessert."

"The RED CAT never disappoints: excellent and interesting food, courteous and attentive service, good ambiance, and absolutely a "neighborhood gem." Time and again I go back to this restaurant, and have always enjoyed the food and dining experience. Will continue to both recommend RED CAT to others, as well as to return myself."

"The lunch was terrific especially the tempura green beans. I had the mussels which were very tasty and my companion had the shrimp tacos which she liked. The menu is varied and creative. Also food is on the healthy side. Since it was 1:45 pm when we arrived there were not that many people in the restaurant so it was easy to have a conversation. Would definitely go back to try other things on the menu."
