"Anneke Jans is our favorite restaurant and we dine there often. The waitstaff is outstanding - as is the food. We normally don't like noisy restaurants and Anneke Jans is noisy (European bistro atmosphere), particularly if there is a large group sitting nearby, but the food and friendly people keep us coming back time and again. Anneke Jans is hard to beat ~ a real gem. We rarely dine anywhere else!"

"This is my favorite restaurant on the seacoast. The food is always fantastic, the atmosphere is comfortable, yet unassuming, and the service is impeccable. The mussels are consistently the best I have had anywhere (including Paris), and the wine list is wonderful. Incredible food without all the fuss -- I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough!!"

"We went to Anneke's for our friends birthday dinner. The drinks and food were really great and our server was very nice, but in ordering drinks it took almost 15 minutes (or more) for them to arrive at the table. As well, our server only checked in a few times, when we really needed more attention to refill bread, water, drinks, etc. Again, the server was very polite, but either too busy, or not quite invested enough.
The appetizers were delicious and all the entrees were very well prepared. We will absolutely be dinning there again."

"it was nice but not the great foodie spot that people have raved to us about. The food was lacking a little something we felt there are better options in portsmouth. The service was very good though."

"This was our first time at Anneke Jans since the expansion. We were a little concerned that it would change the ambiance and the service , but we were very pleasantly surprised. The whole experience exceeded our expectations. I would gladly recommend that restaurant and I can't wait to go back again."

"I was there for Restaurant Week and was very impressed. The place was packed, presumably due to Restaurant week, but the service was still attentive and fast. The only downside was that the noise level was quite loud, which also might be an artifact of the timing.
The food was fantastic, especially the braised pork shank. It was melt-in-your-mouth tender. For desert I had the Grapefruit Meringue Tart, which was also very good. The meringue was still a bit chewy, almost like marshmallow, which I really enjoyed.
Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely return again!"

"The only reason for two stars is the excellent appetizer and good service. The menu descriptions just do not match with the execution.
My wife and I had stopped eating at Anneke Jans after a couple of disappointing dinners. We thought we would give it a try for their Easter Brunch - mistake.
The bread that arrived was stale - not stale as in cut that morning and a bit dry, but several days stale.
The appetizer was outstanding, so my wife and I decided to forget the bread issue.
However, both entrees were virtually tasteless. My wife had the rabbit cassoulet and I had the braised shortribs.
We ordered coffee, but skipped dessert figuring that it would be yet another disappointment only to find weak coffee.
Never again."

"Kudos to the chef who offered Rabbit Cassoulet for Easter brunch. It was divine. And the renovation has created a fine, open space. Great ambience. Not many restaurants show as well in daylight, but Anneke Jans does."

"Very disappointed with the service. Waiter forgot to put in our entree order and left off half the dessert order . The new expanded space is great and the host was very gracious.
However, waiting an hour for dinner was frustrating. We had to wait twenty minutes before the waiter even took our drink order. He didn't appear to be busy with other tables.
After many wonderful experiences at Anneke Jans, this was a bummer."

"It was my wife's birthday and we wanted to do something special for dinner. Anneke Jans was fantastic! The food was great, the service was fabulous and the atmosphere was very trendy, despite being a little loud. Ignore the few average reviews this restaurant has! Yes it is expensive and yes it is worth it. A nice change of pace. Have the Duck Breast..."

"While the salad with pancetta, caramelized pear, roasted pumpkin seeds served with a red wine vinaigrette and The P.E.I. Mussels, (bacon, shallot in white wine and cream) served with crusty bread was a SUPREME meal alone, the entree du jour choices were beyond expectations. (Don't forget dessert: French pressed coffee, chocolate cake with raspberry sorbet and a 'Miles Davis' martini. A downtown Kittery location, reminiscent of a side street in Paris where not all views are of St. Michel, is sweet just the same."

"We've eaten at Anneke Jans several times and have been pleased with the food and service every time. There have been some renovations lately which have changed the experience - some good news, some bad news. The new lounge/expanded bar is attractive and lively (good news). However, the dining tables in the area where the old bar was are less than ideal. If you're unlucky enough to have a seat that faces the street, you have to endure constant auto headlights in your eyes. Curtains or shades would alleviate the annoyance. In our case, a comped glass of wine would have made my husband a little bit happier when he paid the bill. Good customer relations - the missing ingredient. We left feeling grumpy."

"The atmosphere at this neighborhood restaurant is pleasant and bistro-like. The food is always somewhere between good and very good. However, the wine list, a bit eclectic, but fun, is seriously overpriced. For example a wine that costs $11.00 is listed for $66.00. This is just one example, but the list is consistently marked at 4 to 6 x the cost of the wine. A mark-up of this magnitude is insulting to the patrons who enjoying drinking wine with their meal."

"I have been hearing great things about this restaurant from friends, so was excited to give it a try. We went in a Friday night and were looking forward to a fabulous cocktail to start our evening. Unfortunately the cocktail menu was limited and when we asked our server if there were any other drink specials, she curtly said "everything is right there". The service was fine after that, but not stellar. The bread was a bit of a disappointment; room temperature bread served with an ice cold chunk of butter (odd). The food was good; I had the short rib special and it was fine, but I'd probably not order it again. The ambiance is great, and the other staff we ran into were fantastic, so maybe it was just an off night."

"Love at Anneke Jans, as always!! The food was fantastic. We brought friends with us who also enjoyed their time and meal. The salads were excellent. The salmon was enjoyed by two of our party. I am vegan and they are able to meet my needs with a yummy dish with tomatoes and green beans. They were also very accommodating to another substitution requested by our party. The server was fun, friendly and knowledgable. A great evening! Highly recommended."

"We went to AJ on a Sunday evening for my birthday. The restaurant was still quite full, but not jammed and the pace was relaxed and quite, just what we were looking for. Service was attentive and prompt, not too rushed but there when we needed a refill or the next course. We started with fresh and crispy salads and fresh cut bread. My wife had the pan seared Salmon and liked it all, especially the potato corn cake. The Salmon was fresh and done just right. I had the Beef Stroganoff in a red wine sauce. it was comfort food on steroids, just great. We skipped desert since we had a birthday cake waiting at home, but the menu looked tasty and the finishing pressed coffee and cappuccino were both great."

"Four Top. Very impressed with the new space. Bar area is much larger and comfortable. Food was solid but a tad shy of the historical quality I remember. My dinner mates were more impressed with the overall quality of their meals and loved the mussels in particular. The steak was a little over priced for the cut but cooked well. My duck was good. Service was efficient but rushed. Solid as always but with dining you are always being ranked against your peers the local dining scene."

"The food was fantastic! Our waiter started out attentive, polite, and very nice, but by the end of the meal his attentiveness had waned. Our seating location left something to be desired....the cozy table for two would have been wonderful, except my husbands back was to the front door and on this very cold winter night it was not very cozy."
