The Precinct
For Jeff Ruby, this is the steakhouse that started it all. In 1981, The Precinct was born in the former Cincinnati Police Patrol House Number 6. This turn-of-the-century, Romanesque-style structure would hold what is now the longest, continuously running white tablecloth restaurant in the city.
Recently named one of America's Top 10 Steakhouses by USA Today and Gayot.com, The Precinct is frequently recognized as having Cincinnati’s best steaks, seafood and service. "The character of the location is one-of-a-kind, very charming. Wait staff is long-serving, knowledgeabe, pleasant and efficient. Steaks are expertly prepared. Prices are about what you would expect for high-end steak house, so definitely not an ordinary dinner out."

"Took my husband here for Father's Day. Felt like I was stepping back in time a bit. Greeter was mildly pleased to see us. We were seated at a very tiny table near the kitchen. Not the best but the space over all is a bit cramped. There are mirrored wall everywhere trying to give the illusion of a bigger space but it kind of reminded me of a fun house at a carnival. Wait staff was VERY attentive. Food here is mostly steak, seafood and wine. My salmon was very good, my husband's steak was good. Garlic mashed potatoes were fair. The Greek and Freddie salad were good but nothing special. We had a crab cake appetizer with lots of crab meat and it was very tasty. This is a place for special occasions but beware, it is very pricey."

"Amazing steaks. We each had the Porterhouse dry-aged special this time. Huge fillet side on each steak, perfectly prepared. Server was wonderful, let us not our meal at leisure. We sat next to the flambé table so had a show along with our dinner."

"My husband and I decided to try The Precinct to celebrate our anniversary. We have been to Jeff Ruby's downtown and loved it but wanted to try one of his other restaurants. It was absolutely wonderful! The food was spectacular and the service was exceptional. They even surprised us with an anniversary dessert. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and we will be dinning again with them in the future!"

"4 of us enjoyed a truly wonderful experience on June 4, 2013. We were surprised at how busy the restaurant was. Our server, Chris, was knowledgeable, well paced and accomodating. The physical layout of the restaurant required amazing choreography among the waitstaff.
While it is pricey, the food, drinks and wine were, in our opinion, worth the cost. Each of us had a differnet cut of beef and all were outstanding. The only glitch occurred when a steak ordered medium rare was delivered having been cooked to a strong medium. It was replaced immediately and without debate. The others were prepared as ordered. The flavor, texture and seasoning of each steak was terrific. We would return and would not hesitate to recommend it."

"My wife had the Jac Collinsworth while I had the . We are military and have moved about every two years--living and eating in place all over the country. By far, The Precinct has the best steaks we've ever enjoyed! The Freddie Salad is a must and indulge with the Mac & Cheese (not your mama's Kraft) but a different, flavorful experience altogether. I recommend The Precinct--hands down."

"The food is spectacular and this is one of my regular "event" dinner places. I'll focus on the bad, although there was very little to talk about. I would prefer the seating be farther apart or the table size be changed.... I was closer to the person sitting in the adjacent table than I was to my date. Service was excellent, but at one point the waiter offered (we didn't ask) to let us taste a wine... and forgot about it. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but with what we're paying here, it is. Again, I will definitely go there again because the food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is very "Cincinnati". I love it!"

"This was a great experience. Servers ever present without being intrusive. My steak and our meals were cooked perfectly. I'm not quite sure of the seasoning on the steak but it was excellent. The wine suggested to us was perfect. It was Pinot. We enjoyed everything about this meal. The Mac and Cheese was the best we have had. It was a very enjoyable evening and experience. We will definitely go back."

"The steaks are excellent and the wine choices are neverending. The service is spot on. Only complaint is that we were at a small two seater table wedged in a corner. It was so tight I didn't even have room to open the menu. It's ok to leave a little floor space sans tables. Other than that it was a great experience."

"We went to celebrate my birthday. The service was the first thing we noticed. The people were friendly and our server, Chris, was very professional and courteous. We didn't have to ask for practically anything at our table. Someone was always there to refill drinks or remove used plates. There was a group of people in a special room near where were seated. Closing the door helped, but the noise from their group did detract from the overall experience. I don't think the Precinct is conducive to groups. The place is so tight and the atmosphere so delicate that a noisy group is a major distraction."

"We went to the Precinct for our 33rd wedding anniversary. We had been there once before and have also dined at Ruby's steakhouse downtown and at Belterra Casino. The food was very good but the quarters were a little cramped. We were seated at a table for two up against a mirrored wall and there was barely enough room to squeeze between our table and the one next to us. We felt we were eating dinner seated with strangers."

"Food is awesome, slightly over-priced. My biggest recommendation is that the tables are entirely too small. We kept knocking utensils off trying to move menus around. Barely enough room for the bread basket."

"Went to Precinct after seeing the Chef Search on Food network. Actually found out that the Chef that won the job actually didn't take the position. Nevertheless, the current Chef and staff are phenomenal. Food was perfection, steak was cooked perfectly and Collinsworth topping was well worth the price of admission. Tables are close together but you really don't feel cramped at all. I have dined at a variety of upscale steak joints and this is definitely in the running for the best ever!"

"We drive to Cincinnati and spend the weekend every month or so and The Precinct is our favorite dinner destination. Fabulous food, a knowledgable and friendly staff, and all diners seem to enjoy each others company. If you are in the area, well worth the visit. Both my wife and I highly recommend!"

"It had been a while since we'd been to this well known steakhouse, but I was wowed in two ways. Always known as a premium restaurant, the prices were pretty breathtaking, with many entrees at about $50. A $50 gift certificate someone gave us barely paid the bar. A house syrah was listed at $6 / glass, so when I ordered a "glass of syrah" and found it to be $12, I was a bit surprised. Our server appeared to be coached to encourage ala carte items.
The 2nd Wow: The food. No place I've found has such amazing steaks as this place. Oysters & scallops also excellent.
Management seems to have created a staff that is always present and pleasant, if not cheerful.
So, the Precinct remains on my list of places to take someone you want to impress."

"We were in Cincinnati visiting my son and he suggested this restaurant as he has been there several times. It is a place where many celebrities have visited and you see their pictures on the wall. The steaks are very unique and very flavorful."

"The Ruby rub that they put on my 22 oz porterhouse took that steak to another level. It was so soft to begin with. Our server Ticky wa great. Only downfall was that the mashed potatoes were room temp. Loved that it isn't ale carte. The banana fosters looked awesome, just didn't have any more room."

"We had been told for years that The Precinct had the best steak in town so for our 40th anniversary we tried it. We were impressed! Food was excellent and Rob our waiter could not have been more attentive while not being intrusive. I would highly recommend for a special occasion. Most expensive steak I have ever eaten while also being the best steak I have ever eaten."

"5/19/13 was my wife and I's first year anniversary, so we wanted to do it up right, and we chose the Precinct. The food was INCREDIBLE. From the risotto balls to the steaks, scallops, mac & cheese, creamed corn, and finally the passion fruit sorbet. What an outstanding meal in every way. Only thing that was a little disappointing, and the restaurant couldn't help this, but there was a regular there with he and his entire family, being decently loud and delaying our and those around us service of our waiter."

"My wife and I have been meaning to try the Precinct for a few years now, and every time we drive by, we always say, "Oh yeah. We still haven't eaten at the Precinct yet. We should make reservations sometime soon." Well, we finally went for our third anniversary, and it surpassed our expectations. The building has great history, ambience is fantastic, and the food outstanding. Now, we are both meat-eaters, so we each had a fillet. I had the Dusty Baker (best steak I've ever had), and she had the Collinsworth. It is moderately pricey, but you get what you pay for, and then some. The wine list is decent, and the service was attentive but not intrusive. We will definitely go back!"

"The service was exceptional. The ambiance was great. This was my wife and I’s anniversary and our first trip to this trendy restaurant, we had a nice time. I’m not quite sure the $200.00 tab was worth it. I thought the steak was just so so. My expectations were a lot higher and I was a bit disappointed with the steak for the price. Open table did a great job, reminded me of the reservation and was very easy and convenient to use."

"2nd year in a row to celebrate our anniversary here. Wonderful evening with special friends to make an evening to remember. Thank you to all at The Precinct, to our freinds as well. The food was amazing, of course you can never go wrong with a Jeff Ruby steak, especially the porterhouse. Simply wonderful. "Excellent service all around. They were very accommodating with an elderly physically impaired member of our party. They also cooked the steaks the way we wanted them, not charred. We celebrated two birthdays and were treated with some very nice deserts. A nice all around dining experience!"

"I've been going to the Precinct for at least 25 years. I don't expect prices to go unchanged but it seems they've taken a huge leap recently. Much higher prices plus smaller steaks indicates the value proposition is out of whack. It feels as if this is a profit grab, not just keeping up with higher costs. Certainly their right to do so but I won't be back anytime soon."
