Pig and Khao Reviews List

Pig and Khao

The Fatty Crew Hospitality Group has continued their expansion. The restaurant veterans have partnered with Top Chef contestant Leah Cohen to open Pig and Khao (68 Clinton Street) on the Lower East Side. The Southeast Asian inspired cuisine offers a variety of Thai and Filipino influences on the menu including Crispy Pata and pickled mango salad (pork shank cooked in soy sauce and five spice garnished with coriander, crispy garlic served with a secret family recipe sweet and sour liver dipping sauce), Grilled Pork Jowl and Watermelon Salad (chili lime fish sauce, shallot, chicharron, herbs and toasted rice) and Crispy Quail Adobo (Szechuan peppercorn, coconut vinegar, soy sauce, bay leaves, crispy garlic, scallion and soft boil quail egg). Drinks will range from cheap canned beer to large format beer served Hong Kong style (drink out of small bowls), wine cocktails and a self-serve bottomless tap in the backyard

"I generally dont submit reviews but felt compelled to do so for Pig and Khao. The food was amazing and our waiter was incredibly attentive and charming. The hostess however couldnt have been more rude or unwelcoming. The first time i had a reservation here, there was a mix up in the time. My calendar reminder set by open table listed the reservation under 730pm when in fact it was at 7pm. I appreciate the need to give away tables when parties dont show for their reservation, however, when i explained this situation to the hostess she made no attempt to offer any alternatives or accomodate us in any way. Maybe she had a bad day we told ourselves, yet on our second visit she was equally rude. Not the best first impression for a new restaurant."

"We loved this latest venture from the Fatty Crew crowd. Go with the small plates, we had small plates and then main courses and were stuffed to the gills. The small plates are their strength, especially the pork and watermelon salad. Service could've been better, they forgot our side vegetable, which I hear is a common problem. They need to work out their communication strategy. I asked for the dish after they brought out the main courses, and was assured "it's coming." Well, it wasn't, so I cancelled it. Wasn't a big deal but that's something that needs to be addressed. Everything else was great, though, and my teenage son found it very enjoyable! Good for those hungry teens!"

"Excellent meal, highly recommend the tasting menu. Fried Oysters, Mango Salad, Rib, Steak, all exceptional. This has become a regular place for me now, look forward to going back again. Almost forgot to mention the Coconut rice, YUMMMMMY! the tasting menu was so large that I had to take the final course home with the coconut rice and it was awesome. Best next day lunch ever."

"We visited Pig and Khao on Sunday Mothers Day. My son has recently moved into the neighborhood and has seen crowds trying to get in. With a reservation we were whisked right
in to our table. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. It was great to watch he chefs cooking. The food was GREAT. We were a little hesitant about the menu at first, but decided to jump right in. The Red curry crispy rice salad was actually lettuce wraps. The flavors exploded in our mouth. We also had the Pigs jowl served with a watermelon chutney. Superb! Kudos to the Chef and the staff. We will be back.

"Pig and Khao is an unbelievable spot. It is the only place in a very long time where I always walk out feeling that everything I ate was delicious and perfectly executed. The service can be a bit lacking--they may bring the wrong drink or forget a side of rice--but it is a small price to pay for such delicious food. This place is best enjoyed by at least a small group, as the dishes are perfect for sharing and you'll want to try more than one thing."

"The food was delicious. The hospitality was great. The music level said, "Can you leave now so we can flip these tables". Energetic is a complete misnomer for the music level. It such a disappointment to feel as if you aren't wanted somewhere.
The quail with adobo was a crunchy bit of fried. The quail was slightly overcooked, but it still had a great sauce and was not greasy.
The mussels were sublime. They had a great broth that was good for sopping us with the sweet buns they provided or the coconut rice we ordered. The coconut rice was delish.
The whole fish soup was great, especially since I wasn't that interested in it when we ordered it. The first was cooked well. It was a sort of traditional sour fish soup."

"I'm not a foodie, but the food (mussels, a curry noodle dish and coconut rice) seemed of a high caliber and was very tasty, for a good price. Music was a bit loud but not overwhelming. The place was busy, but we called ahead with a reservation and were able to sit after 10 minutes. The bar offers a wide selection of beers including a bottomless serve-yourself PBR for $15. Our server offered to get me a single draft, even though it is not normally offered.
The Google offer deal we had made it all the more worth it. I would definitely recommend this establishment and would return to eat in the future.

"Went here for brunch. The sirloin in the Steak and Eggs was perfectly cooked, although I wasn't asked how I wanted either my steak or egg done. The longonissa sausage was just ok. The champorado was excellent, although there was a bit too much bacon (something I never thought I'd say). The fresh watermelon juice was very refreshing. Service was attentive."

"probably expected tpo much based on previous reviews, but food was not star -level. cute little restaurant with youngish crowd seemingly more interested in the bar than in the limited food menu. crispy pata ok but a little small for the $28 price. sisig had a bit too much fat. pork jowl had a LOT of watermelon and 4 bites of jowl. waiters are well-meaning and very energetic (water glasses topped off after every sip!)"

"We've eaten at several of Leah Cohen's restaurants and this is hands down the best. Although the restaurant is small it is lively, eclectic and serves delicious food. Our server was friendly, happy and full of great suggestions which all created a great atmosphere for us to have a great meal. The entire staff was friendly and welcoming including the owner/chef and the manager. The corned beef hash and the powdered sugar donuts were both so good we had doubles of each! Mimosas were cheap, bottomless and delicious. We also enjoyed the Bahn Xeo and the side of Garlic Fried Rice was fantastic. We can't wait to visit again when the weather is warmer and we can sit outside. A perfect meal! A++."

"The food was imaginative and tasty, lots of crunch and texture, but everything except the white rice was very highly spiced--nothing contrasting, for a brief respite. We were kind of bummed by the wine list--a total of FIVE wines, and the only one which sort of worked was the Riesling. We finally switched to beer (6 points), NOT the tasteless Pabst which is on serve-yourself tap, as much as you want for $15 (try none for $0). But there was a fabulous fresh watermelon juice, as a non-alc. option. Also they offer no desserts--would have appreciated a cooling sorbet or even just seasonal fresh fruit. The noise level was quite high--too high to comfortably carry on a conversation. A great place for younger people who love spicy food."

"The food is carefully prepared to a high standard, but the fact that they refuse to modulate spiciness to diner request is a problem. Also, the best dish on the menu, the shrimp taco, is only available for brunch. The beer list appears to be chosen for its "cool" factor rather than actual quality."

"I have never felt so rushed out of brunch from a casual eatery, especially when I have taken the time to make a reservation. When you're running out of food and drinks at 3pm, you shouldn't allow a 2:30 brunch seating. I'm willing to give any new place a second chance, but really hope their attitude disappears."

"Good food but small portions. Interesting and eclectic food offerings. I liked the Pork Jowl but it was a little fatty.
They did offer bottomless mimosas at brunch for $15 which was the best deal and the fact that there were 4 different flavors made it more fun. I recommend the watermelon and lychee mimosas.
The atmosphere was lively and energetic. Fun classic hip hop music.
Be sure to make a reservation. The tables were full at brunch time on a Saturday"

"As a Philippine-American, I had been craving some familiar tastes from my mom's kitchen. Though, knowing that Pig & Khao isn't a traditional Filipino restaurant got me curious to try a different spin on the food I craved. A friend visiting from my hometown was the perfect opportunity to go; she's 1/2 Filipino. We got the Prix Fixe of 5 courses, about $40 a person, and from the first bite (still can't stop thinking about the shrimp toast) to the last (we could only take a couple of bites of the 5th course--we were stuffed!) we enjoyed every bite. I love the spin on adobo using quail, and the sisig with an egg cracked on top. Definitely going back to try other menu items."

"Pig & Khao has a person in the kitchen who acts as the interface between the cook and the waiters. This person wears a shirt with the logo: "Pleasure Dispenser." This statement could not be more accurate. The food that comes out of the tiny little kitchen is amazing. Well worth the trip deep into hipsterville. The 5 course tasting menu for $39 a person is absolutely worth it."

"I was caught off guard when I was called to confirm my reservation and had to call back 2 times in order to confirm, only to receive a call the following day from an unhappy hostess saying I had never called them back to confirm. I told her I did and spoke to someone 2 times and expected a reasonable reply yet she was very snippy. That set the tone. We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation and I could see our table waiting. Their policy is to not seat unless the entire party was there. My husband and I would have sat down and at least ordered a few starters and drinks but we had to wait. The portions were small for the price and the noise level was impossible to hold a conversation. We felt rushed through our dinner."

"A nice addition to the neighborhood! We ordered the sisig, and the curry chicken noodles and we loved it. The doughnuts were also pretty amazing. There are also a nice selection of beers. Our waitress was friendly and helpful with recommendations and our glasses were always filled with water - very attentive. If you do not mind being fairly closely seated to your neighbor, you will like this place. We had some friendly people next to us, who told us that the dishes were pretty authentic. Highly recommend this place!"

"This restaurant is not afraid of spicy, which I appreciate, but it may be a bit too much for some. Thus be warned about the red curry dishes. The signature pata dish (fried pork) was delicious as well as the quail adobo. Lots of savory sauces for everything. The large dishes are generous in portion-size. We ordered far too much food for two people with a decent appetite (1 appetizer, 2 small plates, and 1 large plate, and rice). The food was interesting asian comfort food and inventive overall. The space itself is small and can get uncomfortably loud. It's not the place for deep conversations. Overall the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming if a bit too noisy for the likes of me."

"What I didn't like was there is no ventilation so your clothes will surely smell like food afterwards. Other than that the food was delicious, interesting, yet simple on the palette. Simply delicious. I had the pork jowl, quail adobo and market vegetable of the day, a garlic sauteed leafy green. The veggies were a bit spicy, I didn't mind but my partner found it a bit overpowering. Also the veggies came out last, which really was not the point. And my prosecco was a bit flat, didn't mention it. My partners michelada was very tasty. I would go back again and have recommended Pig and Khao to others already."

"Very happy with our meal here!! Everything was delicious and the size of small plates was perfect for sharing.
We had a great mix of flavors within this small menu. The staff was friendly and attentive.
We'll definitely be back and recommend to friends.

"I lived in the Philippines for 2 years and my daughter is 1/2 Filipino, so when we saw the review in the NYT prior to our visit, we decided to check it out. We sampled many things on the menu and indulged in the bottomless mimosas and had a fabulous time. Wait staff was awesome, attentive without being overwhelming, music was very contemporary and pretty loud. The food was really eyeopening and much more sophisticated than anything I ever experienced while living in the PI."

"Fantastic casual feeling restaurant with exceptional food and service. Intimate, personal and yet clearly marking the point of view from the chef. The sirloin and whole fish were both seriously memorable. Would highly recommend, and will, as am a foodie influencer."

"We are relative novices to filipino fare, so we cannot vouch for the authenticity of the recipes, just whether we liked the food. We ordered several small plates (which were none too small) and one large plate for the three of us. The sisig was flavorful and paired beautifully with the coconut rice, but we personally preferred the crispy red curry rice salad. The real star of the evening was the crispy whole fried fish in hot and sour broth which was fantastic. The service was pleasant but we were made to wait ~40 minutes despite having a reservation. To the staff's credit, they did comp us a drink while we waited but it was not the best way to start the evening. Once seated the service was good."

"The two of us ordered three medium plates to share. Red curry rice salad, quail and sizzling sisig are all very tasty. I just wished the portion of quail is bigger. The halo halo dessert is conceptually similar to the one at Talde but is just as good if you're into this kind of quick desserts."

"This was my second time at Pig and Khao and I love it. So far I've had brunch and dinner there, both fantastic experiences. I'm a huge fan of Philippine food and culture and this place is as close as I've come stateside to getting some good sisig. It also helps that the service is awesome - what other place can you show up, change your reservation by an hour and still have a maitre d that looks you in the face? If you don't like hip-hop, you may want to look elsewhere as that's the basis of the soundtrack. Probably my only caveat. Otherwise order yourself a San MIguel and some chicharrons and enjoy a great meal at a very fair price."

"I like Pig and Khao. It has a small menu, which I prefer. We ordered the chef's tasting menu. The Sizzling Sisig, described on the menu as pork head, chili and whole egg didn't disappoint. It was recommended by someone seated next to us. Beware, it's not for tastes that run afraid of fat. In fact, that's pretty much all you get, save the eggs and chili. The quail egg amuse bouche served in a little Japanese spoon was lovely. The ribs were meaty and tasty. The first course of fried Japanese oysters wasn't my dining partner's favorite, although I liked them. The green mango salad was nice, although nothing out of the ordinary. The Halo-Halo desert worth a try. A fun, trendy spot. Highly recommended."

"This is my third visit here in two weeks and I love coming back to try all of the menu offerings but cannot help getting the same things because they are so good (Khao Soi and Sisig). I was 30 minutes late from my reservation but was seated anyway. I ended up chatting with restaurant manager Mike and he was really gracious and friendly. We talked about Filipino food and the restaurant brunch that just started that weekend. The chefs were nice and friendly, the servers were great and energetic and the food is amazing. Mike also hooked me up with my halo halo which was very, very good. Definitely in my regular rotation of restaurants. Thank you!"
