Matisse Restaurant, located between Chevy Chase and Upper Northwest, provides Contemporary French Fusion cuisine to the neighborhood locals and power players of Washington. In a space designed by Thomas Pheasant, guests dine on the freshest seasonal, organic,and local ingredients in a chic and elegant atmosphere. French Doors, and Sweeping Design lend an airy feel to all four dining rooms. Private Dining Spaces and the Chefs table in the wine cellar are available for special occasions, or simply a special treat. "What a treat! Everything from start to finish was superb.
We will definitely be back next year, and in the meantime can't wait to try out the regular brunch menu.
The staff was professional, attentive yet unobtrusive- and they couldn't have been sweeter to our rambunctious 2 year old that needed "dining breaks."

"We dined for Mother's Day brunch and the food was great. I do not like however, when restaurants raise the price of the menu for a special occasion. I can understand paying a higher price for an adult, and they did provide a decent amount of food. But to charge $28 for children and get scrambled eggs and a desert is outrageous.
We will likely return for dinner at some point and leave the kiddos at home!"

"Sadly our second visit to this restaurant was dismal at best. We were greeted by a very rude woman at the hostess stand and made to feel stupid because we asked for the same server as our last visit. We did not get the same server and unfortunately the poor waiter we had was obviously not trained. He brought the wrong bottle of wine, Aubert is not an easy wine to mistake and we we ultimately had to pour our own wine the rest of the evening. After we placed our order he asked if I wanted to have the side dish as an appetizer, I stated that I wanted my appetizer for my appetizer and the side with my entree..odd question. The fish entree had to be returned twice (it was cold). We won't be back."

"I was a little surprised to get a nastygram from OpenTable the day after eating saying that the restaurant reported me as missing my reservation. That being said, the food was wonderful. The service was lovely. The crowd skews older. It is definitely a place to take mom for a nice dinner."

"We have been going to Matisse for years and have always liked the food and atmosphere. Our last visit wasn't our best. The food wasn't special--not bad--but not terrific. It was a Sunday night and the place was almost empty. Not a good sign usually. We'll keep going there with the hope that we had an off night. The restaurant really is beautifully decorated and the maitre d'/owner is friendly and welcoming. We just llke the place."

"If you are looking for a more upscale venue in Northwest with consistently excellent food, this is a great choice. The clientele is older and the feeling is a bit more formal (but not stuffy or pretentious) -- most of the men on a recent Saturday dinner were in jackets and some in ties. Service was professional and the tables are sufficiently far apart that you can have a conversation. The food is French inspired, but not really different from anything you'd find at another high-end restaurant downtown. The appetizers and fish entrees we had at our dinner were uniformly excellent if unspectacular. I would definitely return, but it wasn't so exceptional that I would make it a "destination restaurant.""

"My tuna tartar and seared scallops were outstanding by my dining companion did not find his snapper quite as good, although it was very good and that is why the rating was not listed as outstanding. I have had the meringue dessert previously and it was excellent but this time I would only rate it as good because it seemed a little less fresh than I would have liked."

"We went to Matisse's for dinner on my wife's birthday. I liked the fact that when we arrived to check in for our reservation, the maitre'd recognized our name immediately and gave us one of the best seats in the house. The food was superb and portions were just right. Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive.The atmosphere was casual. Customer's attire ranged from laid-back to tweedy. People were relaxed, and good humor was evident throughout the restaurant. While Matisse is expensive, the quality of the food, service and ambience is worth it. We highly recommend it and plan to go back many times."

"Tucked away on a quiet section of Wisconsin Avenue in Tenleytown, this is a surprising spot. The restaurant is far larger than one would expect from the exterior. We sat in a cosy section near the fireplace. Most of us ordered the salmon which was good, but the real winner of the evening were the two meat dishes ordered; filet mignon, short ribs. The bread at this restaurant is phenomenal!"

"We went to Matisse for a "girls night out" and had a great time. The atmosphere is perfect for conversation (i.e., you can hear and be heard). The staff was attentive but not annoyingly so. The manager (or perhaps owner) immediately offered off-menu options to me when he learned I am vegetarian (even though there are veg options on the menu). The food was tasty -- all in all, a pleasant experience. Would definitetly go back!"

"This is sophisticated, comfortable (in the back room sofa seating along the wsll), warm atmosphere (candle at each table, open fireplace) expensive special restaurant where the attention from roving manager or owner (not sure which) and from the waiters is professional, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Good size portions exquisitely presented. there is an attractive and not rowdy bar so a pleasant place if you have to wait for your table which seldom happens. This is a place that makes you feel special and welcome and does not hurry you. This is where I go if I need to talk seriously with someone...you can hear without being overheard (in the back room at least) Well worth the money."

"We had a lovely family brunch at Matisse. A great place to gather and the food was outstanding. Fabulous beignets, eggs Chesapeake and french toast. They were flexible about adding more people to my reservation and even changing the time at the last weekend."

"Another delicious dinner at Matisse.
We were 6 and covered all the appetizer and entree specials between us, there wasn't a single dish we didn't like.
We ordered seconds of the Polenta Oysters because they were so good. The restaurant was full so the noise level was pretty "energetic" but we could def still have a comfortable conversation.. I think as long as you're not 100 years old you'll be fine.
Can't wait to go back."

"The special - rockfish - was severely overcooked and didn't seem fresh. Service was cordial but absurdly slow. With a packed restaurant, it makes no sense to turn on loud music at 9 PM. The staff is polite but too pressed to do their jobs well."

"Started out on the wrong foot. We made 5:30 pm reservations purposely because I had as my guests a 93 and a 94 year old. They seated us in a booth and would not move us to a table. Unfortunately, they could have been more conciliatory about the explanation. The food and service made up for the rocky start. And the restaurant did fill up with regulars by the time we left. But they could have explained the seating parameters with much more finesse. My guests are still perplexed about the restaurant's inflexibilty."
