Sur La Place is a cozy, fine dining gem nestled in the renowned Palisades area of Washington D.C. A Product of its' sister restaurant, Mannequin Pis, located in Olney, Maryland, Sur La Places specializes in exquisite Belgian cuisine. With over 20 varieties of Mussels and over 30 varieties of fine Belgian beer, one comes to realize that Sur La Place is not your ordinary restaurant. The menu takes a trip through Belgium, from Grilled Duck Pate or Wild Boar and Cranberry Sausage to a Seafood Bouillabaisse with Gambass, Mussels, Salmon, Sea Scallops, and Lobster. Fantastic desserts and a fully stocked bar put the cap on a great experience. With its exposed brick, deep wood hues, and dark red drapery, Sur La Place is an excellent choice for a romantic date, a business meeting, or simply a fine night out in the city. "We were delighted to discover this local gem for my husband's birthday dinner. We shared a kilo of dijonaise mussels and each of us had an appetizer. Husband loved his sausage as much as I loved my civiche. Mussels were delicious and kilo serving so ample we could barely get to the bottom of them. Then we were too full for dessert, regretfully. Nice ambiance, especially at the table for two at the front window. We'd happily return."

"This offshoot of Mannequin Pis has better service and ambiance than the original, but food quality is maintained. Signature mussel dishes in a dozen variants are complemented by very good entrees (try the Striper), and excellent sides (red cabbage). Neighborhood environment is a plus, but add time to find parking on the street. Great beer menu!"

"Having been to this restaurant several times because of the selection of mussels, the service has been ridiculously slow each and every time, regardless of whether the restaurant was full of patrons or nearly empty. The staff is often surly and seemingly annoyed by the job they're doing. No one is at all friendly nor welcoming."

"It may be my American mindset, but 1 kilo of mussels doesn't sound like much. Until the giant bucket shows up... and two people can't seem to finish one pot! We recently did brunch here with friends and the food was excellent. We mixed our orders with two traditional breakfast items and two mussel pots, and had more than enough food for the table. The bar here is very nice, as well. Several Belgian beers on tap, in addition to a full selection of mixed drinks.
The location is great too, if you're looking for something quiet in NW. And with quick access to the C&O canal and nearby Fletcher's Cove, it's a nice place to start a leisurely Sunday afternoon."

"This is a hidden gem! The baked mussels at $12 could be an entire meal, with delicious garlicky broth, piled with onions and cheese and baked. I couldn't tell any difference in the mussels (baked vs. steamed) or the broth, but the baking melted the cheese and slightly caramelized the onions. Spectacular. The seafood cocktail was also excellent, except that it was advertised as an avocado seafood cocktail and there were no avocados -- well there were two tiny slices, maybe 1/6 of a small avocado, on top of the mounds of seafood! Delicious nonetheless."

"We have been to Sur La Place several times now and always were very happy with the mussels. This time I had the steak frites, another Belgian classic. I was very disappointed when the food came: for some reason the béarnaise sauce was changed to a port wine sauce. If they had asked me I would have gone for another dish. The steak they brought out was too spicy for me to eat. As a Belgian I know that when you serve a steak this spicy it is called steak au poivre, something I would never order. Disappointing indeed, but the mussels my wife had were excellent as always."

"YUM !!! I am a major mussels fan and this resto filled the bill. I am anxious to return to try others ( i had the "snob" and it was great). My friend had steak frites and was impressed with it. We shared the wild boar with cranberry sausage as an appetizer and it was delicious. I loved the atmosphere - felt like Brussels or Paris. Would recommend highly for something a little different."

"The food was as good as always. They seated us upon arrival but it was 20 minutes until Tula, the waitress came over. She did not apologize for the delay and was very abrupt. The only good service was from the bus staff. We will return so long as Tula is not our server"

"The service was great. The waiter and manager took care to make sure we were comfortable with our table. Simple things like- they asked if the lights were to bright over a table and we ended up getting a free desert because the manager kept having to come over to our area to get paper table clothes.
The food was fantastic. Sur La Place really does offer quite a selection of mussels. The selection of beer, Belgian and other, was great. It is truly a gem. Highly recommend it."

"I was VERY disappointed with my most recent visit, having been there once before and was looking forward to coming back specifically for the mussels. This time I was horrified at the size of the mussels.. they were barely the size of a dime, you could not even find them in the shell they were so small. When I queried the waitress about the size she informed me that mussels are seasonal and are typically smaller this time of year. I have been to other establishments who offer mussels year round and have never encountered this. And even if that is so, we should have been informed of this AND/OR your pricing policy should reflect the seasonality. To pay $22 for something so sub par is maddening. I doubt I will return."

"I had a wonderful dinner at Sur La Place! As a longtime fan of Belgian cuisine, I was certain that I would enjoy my ever visit to Sur La Place. I was not disappointed! For appetizer, I ordered the wild boar and cranberry sausage, served on a bed of red cabbage cooked in Corsendonk ale. Fantastic! For the main course, I ordered mussels marienere style. That is mussels cooked in white wine, and cooked with garlic, onions, and celery. Truly excellent! Last but not least, the pommes frites (Belgian fries) were excellent! Crisp and dry, not greasy. I also appreciated the fact that Sur La Place offered Delirium Tremens (one of my favourite Belgian strong golden ales) on draft! And I cannot forget the attentive staff. I definitely will return!"

"We have dined at Sur La Place many times previously. When a friend was coming into town that we had not seen for quite some time we thought immediately of Sur La Place. What we needed was a really good meal, good ambiance and a relatively low level of noise so we could spend quality time and catch up given the very short window we had with him. Sur La Place met all our expectations again. Of course the mussels are a must but there is a lot more to the menu than the mussels and the beer selection is wonderful."

"The restaurant was seriously understaffed both in the kitchen and in the dining room to handle the Friday night crowd in addition to a large party. After placing our order, the waiter disappeared for an hour when we finally had the opportunity to ask about our appetizer. He didn't check back on drinks either so we had to ask the bus boy for service. The food is good but I definitely would not go back on a Friday night."

"Really great food. We had the lobster bisque, salmon, and mussels. Everything had superb flavor, buttery but not an overwhelming amount of butter. I will definitely go back for the desserts, the pot au chocolat and chocolat mousse were delicious.
The only drawback was the service. It's not a place you go if you're in a hurry, and our party of six had to wait for an entree and forgotten cocktails. Otherwise, it was a delicious meal."

"Pheasant sausage appetizer with braised red cabbage was excellent, but things went downhill from there. Cornish hen was good but not memorable. Monkfish and scallops skewered in rosemary was creative but badly overcooked to the point that I cinsidered sending it back. Our server was uninterested -- the busboys were more attentive than she was. Will not return (especially when we can get better Belgian fare right across the street!)."

"It was odd being the only diners in the place though our reservation was at 5:00 on a Monday. No children's menu available and they weren't willing to adjust. They said to order off the adult menu which the mother in our group did for herself and shared with the toddlers. The service wasn't bad enough to prevent me from returning but was not good. Great beer offerings though different than what is listed on their website."

"We went to Sur La Place for an early dinner-- 6 pm. Unfortunately when we arrived, there was a large party which included 2 infants and 2 children. The infants cried and screamed, which made dining somewhat unpleasant until they left. The mussels were terrific--very plump and fresh, cooked to perfection. "I've been to this restaurant several times and I can't tear myself away from the mussels. So, my rating of the food is based solely on that. They are indeed delicious, but I wish they came with something other than just French fries. The French fries are good, but it would be nice to have something green. The mussels are definitely overpriced, so I don't go too often.
Maybe they should have a meal that is half mussels and half a piece of fish....

"The food was rich yet palatable. The atmosphere earthy and comfortable. The beer list a Belgian beer lover's dream. The place was a bustling, but not so loud that I couldn't have a good conversation with my wife. I've read reviews that give Sur La Place poor marks for service, but our waiter was attentive without being overbearing. I was pleasantly surprised by how good Sur La Place was. We will definitely return."

"Great bistro get-away. Good wine and very good food. Price should be about 80% of what they charge though. Service is good. If there was a problem (see other reviews), it's been solved. I encourage the restaurant to stretch a bit and serve the more exotic end of European cooking but realize that this is hard in Wonder Bread Washington."

"The food was a delight, but the service was horrible. We had to wave our waitress over after sitting for 20 mins. After our order was taken, we saw her again 1 time and again when we waved her over for the check. The "food runner" seemed annoyed even when we asked for things like ketchup. I completely understood his position. He was taking care of all the tables while the waitress was socializing.
Even though the food was delightful, the service and parking was so bad that we will not be going back. We can find delightful Belgium food in other restaurants around the city!"

"Sur La Place is goog option for those seeking a casual Belgian experience that focuses its menu on moules frites and Belgian beers. Diners should not expect the same caliber of fare as Brasserie Beck, Belga, or Granville Moores; however, I thought the Bruxelles mussel pot was excellent. Unfortunately, Sur La Place provided such poor service that I cannot return (especially given the other options noted). My family and I were seated and asked to move to another table, our food (moules frites all around) took nearly 1.5 hours to arrive at the table, our side items were never delivered, the fries that arrived were cool. Furthermore, our waiter was not attentive to his tables."

"Meant to go to Voila! across the street for their eggs Benedict, but happy we got our Belgian places confused, bc brunch was even tastier here. The eggs benedict were perfect, and the fresh fruit cup truly was fresh and put together with generous care -- not a haphazard garnish. That said, service was horrible, even though it wasn't crowded when we came. It took nearly an hour to get two simple brunch dishes, and no one checked on us in the meantime. Had to get up and go find someone to ask for orange juice. They need to put more energy into pushing out their food and getting it to the table, and into training their wait staff. The food itself is excellent."

I am Belgian and tell anyone who wants a taste of my country’s food that this is the place to go for “moules frites”, a Belgian classic, and pair it with some excellent Belgian beer(s)
