Blue Ribbon Bakery Kitchen is a West Village neighborhood favorite and destination restaurant. Restaurateurs Bruce and Eric Bromberg discovered in 1995 a 140 year-old wood burning brick oven and lovingly restored it and built Blue Ribbon Bakery Kitchen around it. We now proudly operate the only existing wood fired brick bread oven in New York City using methods learned from our time at Poilane Bakery in France, including challah, matzoh, and classic french baguettes. Our menu is eclectic and varied. Menu highlights include our award-winning Fried Chicken, Grilled Lamb Chops, Beef Marrow, locally caught fish and whole roasted pasture-to-table animals prepared in our brick oven, as well as a broad offering of lighter fare. At the heart of each Blue Ribbon Bakery experience is the wood-burning oven that sends the smell of freshly baked bread throughout the dining room. Don’t leave without walking downstairs to see the bakers in action.
"Ok, it was Mother's Day, but frankly, everything was deeply mediocre. I take that back, the bread was good. We had the shrimp and chorizo plus the Cajun shrimp cocktail appetizers and the shrimp were exactly the same - big, kinda watery and slightly metallic tasting. There was nothing really Cajun about them either. They were out of fried chicken(which we didn't find out about until we placed the order) so we had the duck, which was underdone but ok, and the bass, which was also ok. Wouldn't go back off this experience, plus the bill was pretty steep."

"I had booked Blue Ribbon bakery kitchen for a mother's day brunch. We got to the restaurant and it wasn't open! I was really surprised that I was able to make a reservation and get a confirmation for a time that the restaurant wasn't open."

"The Blue Ribbon group tout their fried chicken as the best in the city, and in contention for the best in the land. Having grown up in the Midwest, with the likes of Strouds, I can say with confidence that their claim is valid. This was some of the best fried chicken I have had anywhere. They have some great inventive, yet classic dishes, on the menu - think "classic with a twist". We will be going back again soon."

"I had a good time overall on my first visit to Blue Ribbon. The wine we ordered was really good and the server was warm, attentive and friendly. The food however, was below expectations for the price you pay. Not that any of it was bad, just not the gastronomical experience one would hope for when paying a pretty penny! The chocolate chip bread pudding was pretty darn good though :)"

"The breads are out of this world. Overall a good, albeit way too noisy, restaurant. I have to admit it is getting a little hard to find something interesting to eat. One can have fried chicken, steak or red snapper only so many times. Plus, I get annoyed when, as has happened multiple times here, a particular waiter pushes me in not so quiet a voice to buy a more expensive bottle of wine by downplaying the wine I have chosen. Your wines are already on the high side for a local place (a place that advertises its fried chicken is not in my book a high-flying restaurant), and I find the one waiter's insistence annoying. If you don't like the wines you have on your menu, why do you list them?"

"Fantastic service and great food. They accomodated us and put a party of 2 in a booth that could seat 4, even on a Saturday night. They even had extra bread from their bakery downstairs in a basket on our way out! All in all, great."

"It had been over a decade since I was last at Blue Ribbom Bakery for dinner. My last experience was very good, so I had high expectations for this time and was disappointed. Food was okay, good but not great. There are far more restaurants at te same price point with much better effort and taste when it comes to food and service. Our waiter was a bit scattered and did not come back for more drinks, etc."

"The food was amazing, I can't wait to go back! I went with a group of friends and we started with a cheese plate and one of their specials which was a grilled spicy avocado- a really unique taste. The burger was perfection and we finished with the bread pudding with hot fudge which was HUGE. I can't wait to go back and eat again, this will definitely become a regular spot for me."

"About 20 years ago I frequented the Thompson Street location...it was over the top back then, but frankly it be became a bit too long to wait for a table (up to 1 1/2 hours!). Hence, as Yogi Berra once said: "Nobody goes there anymore - it is too crowded!"
The other night I decided to go to the Blue Ribbon Bakery at the last minute ...and one of the original owners is there and he was so accomodating! I had to change my reservation to 3 persons upon my arrival and he made it work! He is a super guy and he runs a tight ship!
The wait staff are real pros - they make it look easy...they work together and their efforts result in a seamless, perfect meal. food is A +, recognizable food with high end character!! Glad I went back !!"

"The cheese selection was very nice, and of course the vegetable sides were magnificent. The bread is a killer and we enjoyed the loaf we took home, a sweet whole wheat. We had theater and was running late and the staff was very accomodating."

"I have been here several times & it never disappoints! A group of us had dinner here on Thursday & the food was delicious. The fried chicken is a must try! The staff was very accommodating, as we had 2 late arrival guests joining for drinks. This is a good neighborhood place - worth checking out if you are in the West Village."

"Food wasnt anything special (particularly the side dishes, no flavour at all) and the service not great (we kept on having to pour our own wine which was on a side table)and the table was really wonky, they tried to mend but it didnt work and was irritating. Liked the bakery inside the restaurant but food and service needs to be a lot better to compete with all the amazing restaurants in this city."

"First time and exceeded expectations. Loved the brick walls and heavy wood design. Had reservation, was sat right away at corner window table. It was only 7pm they were out of one app and one main. The app was marrow which I wanted, the other was bass which they subbed with Cod. The big deal here is outrageous fried chicken which lived up and past all buzz. Be sure you to check out bakery downstairs which was going strong at that hour, and there is free day old bread on the way out!"

"I had read online that Blue Ribbon Bakery was not only kid-friendly but also had a fantastic brunch. And that was right!!! The French toast was phenomenal, perhaps the best I've ever had. The other dishes my friends ordered were awesome as well - you can't go wrong with any of the poached egg dishes. We lingered a tad to celebrate a friend's engagement and our waiter didn't pressure us to leave despite a busy restaurant. I would definitely recommend this place."

"Reliably delicious food paired with a fantastic, helpful and friendly staff always make for a great dinner. My friend's earring fell somewhere between the door and our table and the staff noticed she was looking for something. The host and waiter and another staff brought around a flashlight and found it under the table for her! The foie gras terrine was great and the portions are actually quite large. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd probably spend a good many nights here."

"I took my 8 year old son here on a weeknight before the crowd arrived. We found the staff to be kind, unpretentious , and very attentive. Although known for fried chicken, and other meats, there are plenty vegetarian options which we were happy to find. Loved seeing the old brick oven, but more importantly,LOVED the bread! This place is family friendly, but probably best come early before "the crowd",so as not to bother all the hipsters ."

"This is our favorite restaurant in New York! We make sure to include a visit every time we visit and dream about it from home the rest of the year! We usually can't carry on a conversation when the food arrives because we are entranced by how good it is. Seriously. The ambiance is charming and hip. Service is excellent. But...we hope you don't go so it doesn't get too popular. :-)"

"It was an intimate, friendly, back-to-earth, hip atmosphere at Blue Ribbon Kitchen on Downing Street. Savored our cheese plate with honey on hearth warmed bread for starters. My Southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens was fabulous, as was husbands's crusty and tender trout. We were only sorry to be so stuffed that we just couldn't order any of the very tempting desserts. Can't wait to return!"

"I'm sure this place is great when not dining here on Valentine's Day and when ordering from the regular menu, but the portions size for the $75/person prix fixe Valentine's Day menu was a joke. "Steak for 2" was enough for 2 toddlers...not 2 adults."

"Went for brunch. All dinners were complimentary regarding food. Menu was diverse with brunch and lunch options. Brunch drinks offered at their standard price which pushes up bill fast. Typical brunch drinks - mimosa, bloody mary, etc - contain little alcholol and shoud be offered at a brunch price."

"Everything we ordered was terrific- although the food was mostly "comfort" style..ie Fried Chicken and rich desserts, I like to eat "healthy" so was really pleased with the salad selection and fish choices, while our friends went for the pork special. There is something for everyone to choose from. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. The place had lots of West Village Charm too."
