"Heading on out to VA on a sunny day? Ashby's food is excellent - from soups to main course deconstructed sandwiches, all delicious. If they have their lamb sandwich or interpretation of a Pork Banh-Mi be sure to get it."

"We have enjoyed eating at the Ashby Inn a number of times. The chef is quite imaginable with combinations that really stand out. The smoked pork shoulder with the black eyed pea polenta and candied pecans was tremendous. Do request to sit outside in warm weather."

"My wife and I had dinner at the Ashby for our wedding anniversary. Chef's Tasting Menu, 6 course paired with the suggested wines (plus some special surprises mixed in). The food was fabulous. We agreed that it was one of the top 5 meals we had ever eaten (and we've eaten at many top resaurants in the Washington, DC area, as well as NY, Vegas, and LA). We were thoroughly impressed with the creativity, flavor development, and presentation of the food. Highlights - Honey Candied Prosciutto; Razor Clam Ceviche with Honey, Buttermilk, and Mint; Mahi with Grits and Sorrel Yogurt; Whipped Cheese with Crustini and Rosemary Jelly; and an Earl Grey Chiffon with Chocolate Sorbet and Grenache. All beautiful. We will definitely return."

"Beautiful location, great drive to get there. Over priced. food was good, but not worth the price paid. Errors were made by servers, food had to be sent back, service was slow."

"Our second visit to Ashby and just as memorable. The food and service were fantastic. Amazing how much thought goes into each and every dish...every combination...every flavor and texture. And what results!"

"Nestled in a scenic Virginia Piedmont valley, the Ashby Inn is a distinctive destination that unpretentiously offers imaginative dishes mostly based on local ingredients, prepared with skill and artistry. The cocktails and wines have similar virtues."

"The menu demonstrates the chef's love of cooking and creating unusual dishes. while my partner embraced this, i felt some of the dishes were contrived. Essentially every menu item required an explanation by the server. The staff is very attentive and the dining rooms very charming. I would recommend the restaurant only to serious foodies."

"This is a lovely restaurant. I wrote "energetic" for noise level as the 4 year old in our party was a contributor to that. But we were in a room with another lively lunch crowd and so it was pleasant and equatable for everyone. The food and service were wonderful - especially patient, kind, and accommodating staff with the little one. They recognized that we were celebrating a special occasion (my mother's 80th birthday) and made many gestures that contributed to the celebration."

"CHARMING bldg & grounds. EXCELLENT, friendly staff. But the food does not match the price. In fact, part of my meal was not edible (& this is not the first time, either!) Where is simple food, cooked w less cream & fat & salt. The one exception was an incredibly delicious salad. Will not return."

"This was a lovely special-occasion brunch. The food, service and ambiance are all superb. We will definitely return; perhaps in better weather to sit outside and enjoy what looked like a lovely outdoor patio and garden.
thanks!"

"I took my girlfriend here for a Valentine's Dinner and I came away very impressed. Although the menu was set up to choose 4 options for the 3 course meal, we both made sure that we tried different things to at least be able to taste half of the Valentine's menu. I had the Swordfish and Prawns for the first course and I could not believe the tastes that came out of this small dish. The second course was the Red Snapper, which was a pretty generous portion and had me stuffed before I got to the final course. This turned out to be a special treat as the Pear Infused ice cream finished off a perfect meal. Honestly, my three choices were better than my girlfriend's, but I must say the Lamb she had was the best I've ever tasted."

"We celebrated our anniversary and my husband's birthday by spending the night at the inn so we could completely enjoy the full tasting menu with wine pairings. It is a relatively expensive venture ($99 per person for just the tasting menu, $159 per person with the wine pairings) - but totally worth it if you are venturing out "to the country" (actually not that far out like other notable inns in our area). The food was mostly delicious with only a couple of the 10 different samplings from snacks(4), appetizers(2), entrees(2) and desserts(2)a little off. The real surprise were the wine pairings - all Virginia wines except one and they were all perfect. Treat yourself. We will be back."

"We've dined at Ashby Inn for lunch many times during the summers and inside a couple of times for dinner, including this year's Valentine dinner. The food is always interesting, a bit eclectic, with fine-dining service...and pricey. My wife and I consider going to Ashby Inn something of an adventure. The menus are not to everyone's taste, (especially to those who are not adventurous,) but they're always memorable and often surprisingly good. Anyway, it's first-rate dining."

"We were met at the door as we entered from the parking lot. We brought a special bottle of wine which needed decanting. Neal, the sommelier, handled everything in a most professional manner."

"Ashby Inn is my go to place for any special occasion. The service is top notch with very knowledgeable staff. The food is beyond compare. You can order something that has an ingrediant you usually don't like and end up loving the item because they are so creative with their dishes. It is not overly expensive, but it is difficult to go regularly due to finances. The Ashby Inn is a wonderful dining experience and Neal, the host and sommelier and Tarver King, the chef, make it exceptional!"

"Everything about the evening was outstanding! The Ashby Inn is a cozy, low-key restaurant that is located in the country, but has a big-city sophisticated charm. The food was perfect and the wine pairings were spot on. The entire staff is very personable and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine selections. You can’t go wrong by dining here, whether for a quiet evening out or celebrate a special occasion with a group of friends."

"Service is solicitous without being over bearing. Wine list is superb! Both international and local wine available. Food is outstanding and unique. Every item full of taste, texture, and complexity. Service is perfectly paced for a luxurious meal. Every aspect of elegant dining out comes together here perfectly. It has been ages since we've had such a grand experience!"

"I was very disappointed with our most recent dinner at Ashby. We always look forward to eating there as a very special place. Last summer we did the tasting menu and were bowled over--really an enjoyable experience.
This time we were underwhelmed and did not feel at all it was worth the price. I was also not pleased with where we were seated--it felt cramped and totally devoid of any charm. Not sure where else seating would have been better. Maybe we need to only go in the summer when we can sit on the terrace. Anyway, I was disappointed.
The menu was also not all that terrific in taste. I enjoyed the fish but found the beef lacking in any flavor at all. It was an "okay" meal--it should have been great."

"The Ashby is one of our favorite places in the entire DC area. You will be hard pressed to find such quality and attention to detail with such warm and genuine service. The proprietors care deeply about the Inn's service and customer satisfaction. A must go!"

"This was the best we have had since moving to Notrth America, more in the vein of a European or Californian restaurant - trying new ways to explore what is possible with food. we had been to the Goodstone only 20 minutes away last month and the Ashby Inn was much more our style, more flavour, modest portions and more adventure. We will be back"
