Slate Wine Bar + Bistro is a casual neighborhood wine bar with an emphasis on small production and sustainably produced wines from all over the world, paired with new American cuisine ranging from light snacks to three course meals. By the glass wines and bottle selections are supplemented with a range of changing features as well as house sparkling, white and red wines. Craft and premium beers and classic cocktails are also available. Space is available for private events and Slate regularly hosts its own events including wine tasting seminars, wine dinners, and beer tastings.
"I generally do not write reviews, but feel strongly that Slate deserves some notice for a promising re-start in Glover Park. Evidently Slate is on its second Chef since opening. I missed the first, but the current chef (May 2013) is promising. Menu is nicely varied---ranging from burgers to risottos and nicely done fish. Noise level is, yes, "energetic," but my sense is that most of the patrons like that. Wait staff was charming and devoted. Patrons seemed stylish and discerning. Promising."

"I have been anxious to try Slate Wine Bar for some time now and happy we did! We tried out their hh and sat in the restaurant for dinner. The service was great and the wine selection was extensive. I would say that this place is great for HH and bar food. The best entrees were their appetizers and the rest was okay.
Will be back for hh and small plates!"

"Waitress was very attentive and friendly.Food was not bad, but it was nothing that was too difficult to prepare. Fish came with a whole slab of butter just globbed on top, which was a little strange. Wine was overpriced.
Still, decent experience overall if you are in the neighborhood."

"I have gone twice now - once for dinner and once for brunch with a Gilt coupon. Food and service is mediocre at best. For a "wine" bar, they know very little about wine - the waitress couldn't even tell us if the wine we ordered was a grape or a blend (clearly I am no wine snob since I needed to ask this)."

"My husband and I went to Slate because we had a Gilt City 'Mimosa Brunch for Two' voucher. The voucher deal was worth it, simply because of the full bottle of champagne. We had 'unlimited' donut holes with a trio of dipping sauces (although the server never asked if we wanted more donuts), the Slate Breakfast (pretty standard food--the toast was great (I know that sounds weird) and the bacon was very crispy, which I like!), and the Eggs Benedict (the hollandaise sauce had no flavor and was congealed, but the bordelaise sauce tasted good). Overall, the food was good--nothing great, and the service was okay. I'd go back if I lived in the neighborhood, but wouldn't make a trip back there from Capitol Hill."

"The restaurant was very busy due to everyone - including my husband and I - using a Gilt City voucher on the last day possible. Even with it being busy though, our server was great and if not always attentive, very aware that she wasn't able to be and apologizing for it. The food was delicious. I'd definitely recommend getting the warm doughnut holes with trio of dipping sauces to start. Might not go for brunch again as without the deal it seemed it would be rather expensive, but glad we went with the voucher for sure."

"Food was mediocre. Service was lacking... Was given coffee without creamer or sugar?? The prices were expensive. Maybe I'd come back for just wine? Bourbon next door is more fun with way tastier food and better bang for your buck."

"My mom and one brother each had the chicken dish and they liked it a lot. My other brother enjoyed his BLT. My dad and I didn't enjoy and didn't finish our steak frites - it was ok. It's not a restaurant for that."

"The food was good but the service left much to be desired. Granted the waiter was new, but he should have had more knowledge about the menu, fish of the day, etc. We received more attention from another server than our own. The restaurant was quiet."

"I've been to Slate a few times and always enjoy myself. Most recently a large group of us went for brunch for my birthday. The staff was very attentive, friendly and made us feel at home. The was wonderful and everyone had a good time. I'm looking forward to going back again in the near future!"

"We went to slate wine bar for brunch a few weeks back, it was wonderful! The doughnut holes for appetizers were excellent! Both brunch entrees were delicous. The staff was very friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I will be back again soon!!!"

"The bar is good and we enjoy going there often. They always have a nice beer selection and an interesting list of wines. I think the food still misses the mark, however. It's not bad, it's just average. If they can get this element right(er), this place would be jam packed every night."

"I went to Slate on a Friday after work for an early dinner. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they had happy hour on Fridays which includes a choice of either red, white, or sparkling wine for $6. My finance is vegetarian, and there were a number of options for her to choose from. Above all, the service was fantastic and it made the evening very enjoyable. We will definitely be returning soon."

"The service is particularly good.... even though there was a kitchen glitch that night slowing meals down significantly, the GM and wait staff were attentive and more than apologetic. When it did arrive the food was attractive and VERY tasty. A definite have to return"
