"The bar scene is very lively, attractive environment. The restaurant is very noisy. Fortunately, we found a back room that was quiet. Our salads were more creative than the usual local fare. We are fish eaters and the entrees/appetizer were just ok. Our server was attentive and effecient as were other staff."

"This was our second visit to Char- the first was on New Years Eve of 2012.
The food this time was excellent. Half of our party of 6 ordered steaks and the others ordered the fish special (Halibut). Both offerings were excellent. I am always a little reticent of steaks because often the reality fails to meet the expectations, but Char delivered. Our server did a very nice job- a pleasant and knowledgeable guy. The only lower rating that I give Char is for the "ambiance." I know that this restaurant is the product of a recent (2012) renovation to the former Strathallen Hotel, but it just kind of falls flat in respect to ambiance. However, personally, that's not a big deal to me, as I'd rather have great food and service which I've found here!"

"My husband and i enjoyed a nice dinner at Char before going to a show at The Auditorium theater. It was very nice inside, though the acoustics allowe us to hear every word of the conversation of the women behind me. The food was very good, but overpriced we thought."

"Upon walking into Char, it felt like we entered a chic NYC hot spot. Decor is warm - not stuffy or sterile. It felt intimate, despite the fact that nearly all the tables were full. Food was amazing. Most of our group had steak - outstanding. This does not feel like a restaurant in a hotel - AT ALL.
A bit pricey - but well worth it."

"We had five people in our party and everyone was very happy with their meal. The bone in ribeye was both high quality and quantity. The salads were chilled and crisp and tasty.Dessert was fabulous,as well!! "We were a party of six and everyone found their meal to be delicious. The problem was that the service was quite slow. When we were eventually seated, it had been close to 10 minutes before someone came to pour water--and that was only because we stopped a staff member passing our table. It seemed as though our server was not made aware that he had a new table. Also, when he arrived, we questioned him about the minimal wine list. However, he said we were not given the full list and he brought one over. The slow service was certainly discouraging but the food was very good, with the exception of the oysters--they were not shucked properly and were hard to get out of the ahell."

"The food was delicious, but the ambiance was over-hyped and the prices seemed a tad high for what it was... maybe the prices just didn't match the service. Although I had a nice experience (mostly because of the time spent with my wife), I left saying that I'd try other restaurants before going back there.
The service needs refinement. I've been to other high-end restaurants in the area with both better and lesser food, but their service made you feel like it was much better. My wife and I did not get that feeling at Char. Not to say that they weren't nice or informed, it just lacked something intangible."

"Wine List was good but rather inclined towards the more expensive. Wine by the stem had good selection, however serving size was quite small. Seemed restaurant was trying to get 5-6 glasses per bottle rather than the accepted 4. Service was pleasant and courteous. The steak was very good. Overall the selections were good with a few exceptions where taste was inclined more to the bland side - i.e.: the king crab bisque. The veal entree had a morel brandy sauce that was delivered in such a small portion that it was hard to get the flavour of the sauce. Table for two was more of a cafeteria style which was uncomfortable to place your feet let alone for women to place their purses. It should be a table with four legs. The prices were high."

"What a nice surprise compared to prior restaurants in the Strathallen Hotel. From comp valet to warm greeting but the food is the thing. Could be the best steaks in Rochester! And the sauces! Make sure you try 2-3 to dip in. Most tables had 4 or more but we were just two and had a great time. If you want professional attentive service the wait staff was excellent."

"Our first time here. Service was very attentitive, prompt and knowledgeable. Menu was varied and interesting. Crab salad appetizer which was just ok, for price and restaurant expected more. My husband has octopus pasta to start and a little undedone. Main course was duck -amazing flavor and cooked perfectly but room temperature. When I told manager this his comment was that was how it was served. They should be able to cook it perfectly and have it warm or minimally let you know when you order. Regardless, it was still delicious. Husband had lamb which was excellent quality but little overcooked. His side dish of brocollini was ice cold. . Portions and food quality were good. We will go back and try another time and give it another chance."

"Had an outstanding meal (dinner) and wonderful time on Saturday, March 16. The entire staff clearly shared our enthusiasm for the food and our waiters made excellent recommendations. We shared the beef special, a wagyu (sp?) strip, perfectly cooked medium rare and well seasoned. The entire staff from the valet parking attendant to the waiters, manager and even the chef (who came out to say thank you after we mentioned how much we enjoyed our meal) made us feel very welcome and were all clearly focused on ensuring that we had an excellent meal and experience."

"Restaurant seemed hip & lively. We arrived later @ 9pm so we were seated in a room off to the side away from the lively scene. The ambiance reminded you that you were in a hotel with the drop ceiling tiles & carpeted floors. The tables, utensils, floral decorations were sleek and modern. The waitstaff & food were always just a little slower than preferred. We waited 30 mins for our appetizers. The food made the wait worth it. The beet salad was thoughtful and had many different notes. It was beautiful and a wonderful blend of taste. The entree's beef with foie gras was wonderful. My duck was also perfect and wonderful. The dessert was so different and was a work of art. I thought each dish was really thought out and tasty."

"It was our first time at Char to celebrate my daughter's birthday. We had a very nice time with great service and delicious food. "I had a Luncheon with my Family @ Chars Steak And Lounge. The Hostess was on her Game she meeted and greeted my guest with a smile and what Chars stands for Class. Geat Job Ker Bear. The management was phenomenal speaking for my mother who does not come out much they were Sharp Dressed Men. Now to the talk of the Day the Food Put it like this if I was to call everyone who sat and tasted and ordered their food they have nothing Bad to say but I'm still full from yesterday. So dining at Chars with my family was what I expected. P.S. I did not forget the Server Rick M. (I'm a leave the rest alone) Introduced his self with a smile served his food in a timely fashion. "First off - the place is beautiful. The Strath did an amazing job renovating the entire lobby. An old school ambiance is now replaced with trendy ambient lighting and modern decor.
I'm not a food snob by any stretch of the imagination. Food for me is either bad, good, really good or great - I don't care about reduction sauces any of the other fluff that constitutes the novella sized menu listings that are so common now.
The food here was very good. It would have been great - but not with portions this small. This isn't New York City. Portions are small there because with so many people - they want you in and out.
Overall - not bad, but not the place we'll be frequenting. This is Rochester - not NYC."

"My meal and drinks were excellent!! I had the Filet that I could cut with my fork!!! My husband tried the Fish Special - Serfent; the waiter explained it was a very moist fish and it certainly was; my husband didn't love it but was glad he tried it.
The sides are great to share!!
The bar was hopping and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves!!"

"We enjoyed our meal. Since it was very busy on Valentines Day we ended up sitting in a lounge area transformed which wasn't bad but headlights from cars, pulling up to the front door did shine right in our eyes. We would go again since the service and food were great."

"The first thing I should probably do is mention that CHAR is not a cheap place to eat. Nor is its location particularly obvious. However, the bar is great, with a good selection of beer and drinks and nice ambiance. I spent $14 on a pint of Scotch Ale and an amaretto sour, but the beer was delicious and my fiancee said it was the best amaretto sour she ever had.
Our server, Brandon, was very good as well, and so was the calamari we ordered. The best part of the night was the steaks, though. For me a medium-rare sirloin and for her a medium fillet mignon. Best steaks we've ever had. I highly recommend this place."

"We were very impressed with the newly renovated Strathallan hotel and the new Char restaurant. The bar and lounge area are beautiful with plenty of seating at the bar, tables and lounge with 2-sided fireplace. Our party of 4 started with 2 different types of raw oysters which were fantastic. Our entrees included the filet mignon, Delmonico steak and a nightly special veal ossobuco. The meat was cooked and presented perfectly. A few glasses of chardonnay and pinot noir rounded out the experience. The Strathallan hotel is conveniently located on historic East Avenue in downtown Rochester. Although we live in a suburb of Rochester, we stayed overnight in a beautiful 2-room suite with balcony. The whole experience was very memorable."

"I wish I could give a great review because I was really excited about trying somewhere new and we don't get out as much as we like. Unfortunately, things went sour as soon as we were seated. The manager ripped into the hostess for seating us at that particular table. (Well within earshot of us. Awkward!) We got one waiter. Then another. Then we got an earful from the wait staff complaining about the lack of communication. It was very uncomfortable. The food was fine, but definitely not good enough to go back and listen to all of that again!"

"It was a genuine pleasure to eat there from beginning to end. My salad was clean and light with nice flavors, his shrimp was perfectly done, delicious and beautifully presented. The grill is really where it is at though. We had two steaks, the 8 oz. fillet and the 14 oz NY strip, and both were done beautifully and were nice and tender as they should be. The ambiance is warm, inviting and elegant, the staff was attentive yet unobtrusive during a very busy service, and of course the dessert was delicious."

"I ordered a NOTA martini. The women who took our order had no idea what it was or what it tasted like. It was served in a pint glass, with ice and a stir stick. Wrong drink, wrong glass, wrong everything. Sent it back and was served an entirely different drink now in a martini glass. Not sure who made the first drink but I was left with a bad impression. No lounge service either. Had to get up and walk to bar to order drink. For the price of menu professional service is expected. It was not given. Need to polish staff with better training."

"A busy Friday night with a large bar crowd made it difficult at first to see where the restaurant was. Several problems with service made the evening not the enjoyable one we had hoped for, although the quality of the food shows real potential. At high end steak house prices like Tournedos and Max's, the service needs to be improved to match. Would be worth a visit again sometime in the future. Looks like a lively place for a drink, and the bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable."
