Gordon and Fiona Hamersley have owned one of Boston's most popular restaurants for 20 years. Hamersley's Bistro serves contemporary, full-flavored French/Mediterranean food in a relaxed environment. Located in the fashionable South End, Hamersley's is adjacent to the Boston Center for the Arts and its' affiliated theaters and galleries. The historic brick building, which originally housed a piano factory, has been transformed into one of Boston's most comfortable dining atmospheres. The dining room has butter yellow walls, exposed beams and a view of the open kitchen so diners can watch the chefs work in their brightly colored baseball caps. There is also a cozy bar, where neighborhood regulars gather for food and drinks, as well as a large patio for casual summer dining.

"I have been dining at Hamersley's for the past 15 years and have yet to have a meal that was anything but perfect. If you a renew to the restaurant, I would highly recommend the following appetizers (pate plate, duck confit), entrees ( Cassoulet or the roasted chicken - which will redefine your perception on what chicken can taste like). No matter what you order, you will not be dissapointed."

"I had the halibut, which never leaves the menu - and for good reason! Absolutely delicious. My husband had the roast chicken, also a continuing item. For a shared starter we had the mushroom and garlic sandwich. The mushrooms were crisp and came with tons of garlic. Wonderful!"

"I had been there many years ago and found the food to be excellent unfortunately we had a pretentious waitress who made the evening less than perfect. It has been many years since I have been there because of this reason. The waiter we had that evening was a great help to my wife who was looking forward to the lobster dish but would have been unable to order because of the cream used in the preperation. The waiter was able to alter the dish so she was able to order the lobster.Happily I found a great improvment in the service and will return and recommend it to friends. Also the appetizers were large enough to have them at the bar with wine and feel satisfied."

"This is a favorite for my husband and me and where we celebrated our anniversary last Saturday. Gordon Hammersley is the antithesis to the "celebrity chef" venues here and elsewhere. He oversees what is happening in the kitchen, greets and thanks his guests and has a good time doing it. The food is wonderful...the service impeccable."

"As always we enjoyed our meal, but it didn't seem as "special" as in previous times. The food was a cut below: the salt cod empanadas were drier than I remembered, and we were also disappointed with the pecan encrusted steelhead trout (again, dry/overcooked). Even our perennial favorite-and the bistro's signature dish--the roast chicken was not up to previous standards: much too salty.

Nor was the service as quietly professional as in previous visits. If this experience represents a trend, Hamersleys will cease to be--as it has long been--our "special occasion" venue."

"Overall, we were disappointed with the food. Duck and lobster dishes were good, but nothing exceptional. Duck Shepherd's Pie featured under-seasoned mashed potatoes and a thin gravy. Veggie sides were excellent, as was the sides of garlic mashed and polenta. The highlight of the evening was an apple crumble with maple cream dessert. Service was excellent and friendly."

"2 things made Valentine's Day not the best. First, after our entrees were delivered, no one ever came to ask us how it was, and if we needed anything else. When I say never, I mean even after dessert was brought, and our plates were cleared, we were still not asked. Second, the prie fixe menu price was $110 per person. I have eaten at 4 seasons, Sorrelina, Excelsior, The Hungry I, and more, and I have never felt that a restaurant charged me so much for so little, until now. The food tasted good, but the portion size and menu offerings did not justify the price by any means. The food is not revolutionary or cutting edge. I have seen the culinary equivalents at other establishments 3-5 years ago."

"Just a wonderful evening overall! We were seated opposite each other at a small table with couples on either side and asked if we could be seated side by side. There was no room where we were sitting to maneuver, so the staff kindly and quickly moved us to a table where we were able to share the same corner. It certainly enhanced our Valentine's Day dinner! Mixed greens with baked goat cheese were fresh, and the roasted polenta was delicious. My lobster was divine. He totally enjoyed his duck and shepherd's pie. The chocolate dessert was sinful. All in all a superlative evening. Thank you, Hamersley's Bistro!"

"My wife and I attended relatively early-6:30-on a Saturday night. Most of the tables were taken but service was still punctual. The waitstaff was excellent--solicitous and polite without being obnoxious.

I had the mushroom sandwich app and my wife had the duck confit. The sandwich was good but perhaps too salty. The duck confit was heavenly. I then had the cassoulet and my wife had the famous roast chicken. The cassoulet was excellent--the meat was good but the flavor in the beans and sauce was superior. The chicken was good but not transcendent. Dessert was very good--we ordered the warm toffee pudding and a chocolate brownie/cake concoction. Probably 4.5 stars"

"Hamersley's has been around forever and yet it manages to turn out creative and superbly executed food. There are always the old favorites on the menu, but you can also rely on new dishes to reflect whatever is in season and completely fresh, new, and delicious.
The service is impeccable. Everyone in the place takes responsibility for making sure you have a perfect evening. If you are vegetarian, they always have creative vegetarian entrees and often a vegetarian prix fixe. (I'm omnivorous, but will often order vegetarian here, because these are sometimes my favorite entrees!) I love the warmth of the glowing pale yellow walls and the view into the incredibly calm and efficient kitchen. Nothing not to love about Hamersley's."

"We went on Valentine's Day for dinner. This was a simply fantastic experience. Although the restaurant was completely full and tables were turning over rapidly for the next seating whenever someone finished, I must say this was a great night out. From the appetizer selections through the main course and dessert, one would be hard-pressed to have had a better meal. My wife loved the polenta with mushrooms and I found the crab refreshing. The lentil soup was out of this world. My wife thought the haddock was perfect and the lobster with maine shrimp got better with each bite. And the dessert, especially the sort of pineapple tart/macroon--whatever it was--perfection! I think the best Valentine's day dinner we've ever had. Bravo!"

"Came for Valentine's Day with my boyfriend and had a delicious meal. My only complaint is that I didn't know that the four course prix-fixe menu was the ONLY menu one could order from. What was served was well-worth the price at $110 each (I had lobster, my boyfriend had beef tenderloin, and all the courses were prepared very well). So, we definitely spent a lot more than we were anticipating, which was initially somewhat startling, but ended up not minding because the dinner was very good. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to enjoy a romantic dinner or to celebrate a special occasion."

"Great dinner. Since moving here two years ago people have been telling us about the roast chicken. They weren't lying - about the best every enjoyed in a restaurant (honey,if you are reading this, yours is still the best). "I am loathe to say that the food was pretty good, but not great. I had higher hopes than what was delivered. We felt the whole experience was overpriced. Our main issue was with the service, which was inattentive. Our waiter was rushed and seemed stretched between tables. He misheard a wine order and brought out the correct glass to our friend ten minutes later, while we all sat and waited for his glass to arrive. In the meantime, the waiter was running around the room, delivering wine to other tables. He never asked if anyone wanted a second glass, and I pretty much had to tackle him to make a request before he dashed away from our table after delivering our main courses."

"First visit with a friend from from Montreal who dines out often. We both LOVED it. Warm ambiance, tasteful decor and most important, outstanding food. The wine list has a helpful section of "good finds", with some excellent, moderately-priced bottles.

"Every aspect of our dinner was just about perfect until we tried to retrive our car from the valet. We were left waiting in the cold (9 degrees) for twenty minutes when no attendant could be found. "Although food was good, we were seated near a register with contant interruptions, maybe because we arrived early. Nonetheless, the waiter was very pushy to get us to order. We had barely opened our $65 bottle of wine and he seemed annoyed that we were not ready to order immediately....we had been there less than 5 minutes!! We dine out at least twice aweek and if you are spending $200 on a meal I think you can expect to have the table for at least an hour and a half....we rarely even stay that long. I will say the waiter picked up as we got closer to tipping time. Don't think we'll be back. Better restaurants to go to Scampo and Aquitaine being two of them."

"Always wanted to dine here and try the "famous" roast chicken. It did not disappoint. We had a table at the widow overlooking Tremont....it was a cold night so it was a tad cold in that spot. A table of six men was nearby and they were using their "playground voices" at times, so the noise level was a bit high. Service was mostly attentive.

I would retun to try the lamb shank, althogh that night they were substituting rack of lamb for the shank."

"We were seated at the first table in the main dining room, which felt like hanging on the edge of the room--not ideal so beware. The cassoulet--tooted as a winter special--was mediocre at best. The beans were large (instead of small) and the whole dish was uninspired, and produced a heavy effect all night. The dressing for the green salad with toasted goat cheese was so bland we tried salt to bring out flavor--but to no avail.

The chicken dish was truly good, one good meal out of the three we ordered. This was sad, considering how excited we were to finally be eating at the famous Hamersley's Bistro.

"Went to Boston on business and Hamersley's came highly recommended. We walked from the Copley, in the bitter cold, and were greeted by a very warm and friendly hostess. The waiter was attentive, and knew when to come by and when to let the time pass. The wine selection was excellent, and we chose an amazing Sancere. For dinner, we chose dishes that were filling and warm, the Cassoulet and a lamb shank... but were too stuffed for desert. I feel that it lived up to it's reputation, and was packed as we left with many large groups. My only negative was that it was very loud, but the food more than made up for it."

"First time at this restaurant for us, it was recommended. Rough night for the wait staff. Our waitress didn't know we were there for 30 minutes. The waiter at the table next to us knocked food off our table. The valet took 15 minutes to get the car. But . . . the food was good and we would try it again. Every place has an off night."

"I like but don't love Hamersley's. The food is always so rich and heavy - I just struggle with that. I have been a number of times since it is a neighborhood place but was really disappointed in my recent visit. I used to love the cassoulet but it was not very good this time. It was watery, had a lot of fat and not much flavor. I also find the "signature" chicken to be incredibly greasy - I think it is really over-rated to be frank. I wish the food were better since I like the bar area and dining room and outdoor seating in the summer - I just can't really stomach the heavy cuisine."

"We have been at Hamersley's bistro last week with my wife and 2 other friends.
The restaurant has very homey feeling.
Most food in the menu are comfort food.
I was the only one who got the lamb shank which was outstanding. All other three had spicy halibut and I was told it was exceptional too. Accompanied are 2 bottles of sothern france wine, a bottle of gigondas and another bottle of cotes du rhone.
Overall, our experience with Hamersle's bistro was strongly positive.
Also, as far as I know, the excecutive chef is Gordon Hamersley the author of "Bistro cooking at home"......"

The kitchen was very gracious and accommodating to substitute/hold certain items for that person, and everyone was very pleased with their food (ranging from a brilliant pate selection to a spicy halibut and clam roast). "Felt menu was narrow in focus...once winnowing the 9 entrees to two possibilities, I tried to pair it with an appetizer. They were all too similar. Couldn't really find something that was 'different, yet complimentary' to go with the our entree choices.
Liked the "Fiona's finds" part of the wine list ($30-40 range), tho the waiter steered us away from it to a petit syrah from a known producer at $55, which was a good, but an unadventuous choice to go with our 3 different entrees. Should have insisted on something chosen from 'finds.'
Everything fine overall, but not one thing memorable, so in no hurry to return."

"It was a birthday dinner and designated as such on our reservation. They ignored this and no cake or recognition of the event occured. The server was cold and rushed. He had good suggestions but was very aloof. The table cloth was covered with paper over the cloth. This was very bothersome and constantly catching our sleeves and lifting itself up into our plates. Very tacky for this type of restaurant. They meal was tasty but I don't think I would recommend this location to freinds. "Visited on a quiet Monday before Thanksgiving, space was about half full. The food was very good, and ambiance very nice. We were really full by the end of our entree, but nice for our waitress to remember the comment I made at the start about my husband's birthday. The candle in a little sorbet was a nice touch!

Just a few little 'niggles': the wine list had changed recently, and we managed to select one that no one in the restaurant had tried or knew anything about. We took a chance (and found a good choice), but that was strange. And the frequent visits from staff asking us if everything was ok is usually always welcome, but not too frequently (or when you have food in your mouth...). Would expect this knowledge..."

"For a restaurant with such a fabulous reputation, the service left something to be desired. Excellent food and not terrible service, I just kind of felt like for the price one could easily expect more attentive and detailed service. For instance when asking the waiter for a wine recommendation based on the entrees that my date and I were ordering he was not neither very specific nor very informative about what selections would compliment the food. After that, I felt not very attended to during the meal. Additionally, had trouble commanding the bartenders attention after the meal when looking to make change to tip the coat check. Again, nothing outright offensive, just left a little something to be desired."

"How do you describe perfection?! The food, always was incredible. You cannot go wrong with the signature cassoulet and/or roast chicken. I could eat both daily and never grow tired. The desserts were KILLER. Hamersley's is a MUST!!!!!"

"Our dinner was fantastic. The food was excellent and wine list very good. Our server was friendly and
attentive. My only complaint was that it was very noisy. We sat next to two large groups and could barely
hear each other. We sat close to the open kitchen which was a bit distracting. Ask for a table in the back
or side area if you want a more peaceful experience."

"We had an excellent meal at Hammersley's on Nov. 18. The autumn salad was terrific - roasted root vegetables, arugula and lentils with a Romesco sauce on the side. It was one of the more unusual (and best) salads I've ever had. The roasted halibut was excellent as well. Good, attentive service and a reasonable wine list added to the enjoyment."
